WHAT A DELICIOUS FEAST!!.......2004-11-20
Sustenance and Desire is a wonderful book to savor by yourself and to give as a gift. Bascove's paintings are luminous, haunting, sensual, and fascinating. Nick and Cinnamon, p 208, is an incredible portrait of a boy with a bird, and the paintings of tomatoes, artichokes and peaches are lush, inspired and yes, erotic! Bascove also gathered a rich variety of poems and prose pieces that range from Jhumpa Lahiri on spices to Nabokov on mushrooms to Proust on madeleines and memory (how many of us have actually read that passage?). There are articles about aphrodisiacs and vegetarianism and cannibalism (!) as well as Barbara Ehrenreich's take on waitressing for tiny tips. Basho, Woolf, Kimic, Milosz, Kingsolver, Oates, Langston Hughes... It's as if Bascove threw a dinner party for the ages, and everyone came dressed in different styles and offering different treats. It's a smorgasbord you'll love and I offer you this taste, a short poem by Les Murray (p 9):
"A fact the gourmet euphemism can't silence:
vegetarians eat sex, carnivores eat violence."

This new 288 page book is packed with over 500 black and white photos (16 page color section). It provides over 2,200 realistic prices for the items. Major topics range from Arby's, Burger Chef, Hardees to McDonald's, Wendy's, White Castle and many more. Interesting and useful text is included with each major topic. You'll want to add this book to your collectibles library if fast food collectibles are in your collection.

Great for people with interest in fast food toy collecting........1997-11-21
This was my first book that got me started with fast food toy collecting. Its got hundreds of full-color pictures of many of the entire series of fast food collectibles from all the major restaurants, as well as plush toys, a foreign toy section, and index. It comes complete with price ranges, manufacturer markings, restaurant, name, and year (from the late 70s to some of 1996) as well as a spot to annotate the toys you own. Keep an eye out next time you're rooting around in your attic.
If you come across one of those old toys you'd get with a Happy Meal, it could be a collector's item.
So says "Fast Food Toys," by Gail Pope and Keith Hammond.
This is an interesting and unique book that is sure to send college students across the nation into fits of nostalgia.
Remember the McDonald's mainstay food offerings that would transform into robots? Or, better yet, the ones that would turn into dinosaurs?
I haven't thought of Quarter Pounder Cheese O-Saur or Mac-O-Saurus Rex in years. And now collectors are offering three to five dollars for them.
My younger brother, Steven, obtained these six toy aliens from Wendy's years ago, in 1990, that he carried around with him forever. We never knew one of the characters' names, but finally, after a decade of wondering, we know the answer:
Crimson-oid. Yello-boid. Spotta-zoid. Lime-oid. Blu-zoid. Purpa-poid.
They're all in the book. Just not where we put them. But if they ever turn up, and Steven's willing to part with them, he can get three to five dollars for each one.
But even if you're not interested in selling, the book is worth it just to see some old friends again.
"Fast Food Toys" is like a trip back into time, as movie and television promotions abound. Shows like "Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers," "Kisseyfur,""Dinosaurs" ("Not the momma!"), "Tiny Toons" and so much more will suddenly re-enter your consciousness like a bolt of lightning.
These are the toys that were worth hassling your parents into going and getting a Happy Meal for, not the unsophisticated items being offered today.
Best of all, they have pictures of the plush Noid I got from Domino's.
Remember the Noid? Aside from a brief cameo appearance on an episode of "The Simpsons" last season, he doesn't seem to be doing too much. Here's hoping the Noid turns up next to ALF and Terry Bradshaw on the next 10-10-220 phone commercial.
Ah, ALF. It really is a good time to be a child of the '80s.
This probably sounds really nerdy, but it's exciting to see color photos of each and everything you ever got by going through the drive-thru window.
Turns out only the food was fast.

Nearly every toy listed in "Fast Food Toys" has a photo with it! I find this to be a necessity that other toy collecting books lack. There is a great selection of modern McDonald's toys as well as toys from other fast food franchises. My only wish is that Pope and Keith would have included pre-1980s toys.

I have enjoyed most of Jean's quilting books, especially her garden inspired ones. This book is no exception. I love the idea of these little quils to make bigger wall hangings, and wall art. Her directions are wonderful as always. These little art quilts make wonderful great gifts. I am finishing one for a wedding present. Can't wait to make the tree quilt for my home. I could not put this book down from the moment it arrived!!

Great for beginners!.......2006-09-09
For someone that knows absolutely nothing about putting together a room this book has my highest approval. This is like a crash course in design because he gives you all of the design basics like how to choose color, what kind of furniture to use, how to place your pictures, where to place the furniture, how to make a room look smaller or bigger with all of the above. Plus there's a lot of information on the basics of window treatments, lighting, upholstery. This book was titled very well and I very much recommend it for someone that doesn't have a clue about decorating.
This Book is Worth $40 Because...........2006-07-01
...it gets you thinking about where to spend your precious decorating dollars. (Bilhuber advises against dumping your budget in kitchens and bathrooms in favor of making bigger statements in foyers and living rooms, for example.) I cook almost all my family's meals so I was EXTREMELY tempted to replace the white appliances in a home I recently purchased with stainless steel ones. I have instead decided to spend that money having the home's interior professionally painted and perhaps purchase a new oriental rug for my living room. When I think about which will make a bigger impact (freshly painted walls and a lovely rug in the first room people see or silver GE Profile appliances versus white ones in the rear of the house) it's pretty much a no brainer. I suppose it's fine to throw a wad of dough at a kitchen remodel if you're filthy rich and can also afford to decorate the rest of your house to the hilt. Bilhuber seems to recognize that that's not the case for the bulk of us, however. The book has also inspired me in smaller ways like decorating with ferns and pinpointing paint colors based on my favorite possessions such as the oat-colored cashmere cardigan I always turn to. Now if I could only decide whether to paint my ceilings Benjamin Moore's Atrium White as he suggests or Swiss Coffee, which is my favorite!
Give It A Browse.......2006-06-21
Bilhuber is obviously a talented designer and the lovely rooms in the book demonstrate this. Getting the basic concepts of design across to his readers somehow didn't gel. He includes some information that seems obvious:
*Color is the quickest, most powerful, and most economical way to transform your house.
Add to this, some high-flown statements that really don't help:
*Even the humblest of materials can be ennobled by design.
*Design obstacles are nothing more than opportunities.
I did find helpful ideas like these:
*Look at favorite items (suede gloves, a Chinese bowl) and let that inspire your room treatment (not pages torn from a magazine).
*When you feature something, then repeat that design element (maybe through color) elsewhere in the room, so it isn't isolated.
There is useful information here but maybe too much work to pull it out of the text and picture captions.
Basic Design Concepts Explained.......2006-05-07
This book is far more than just a picture book. The instruction in basic design concepts allows you to apply what you learn to novel situations without having to simply copy an idea you see in a picture. I picked up skills from this book, not just ideas.

I think most people don't quite understand this book and what it has to offer. (Interior designers included.) If you're looking for "French Country at home" this book it ain't. But if you want to understand and create your unique style, Bilhuber will definitely teach you how to.
