SOUPED UP.......2007-01-09
GREAT SOUP RECIPES FOR YOU SOUP COOKS. I LOVE TO MAKE UP MY OWN SOUPS WITH WHATEVER I CAN FIND. THIS BOOK WILL HELP YOU TO RISE TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH THE RECIPES AND IDEAS. GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR COOKS' WAREHOUSE OF BOOKS.
Soup's On!.......2006-06-01
I am a huge fan of soup...it can be a simple, stand-alone dish or an elegant addition to a 5 course meal. I picked up this book to find some new ideas to make soup, and I have come away with some great offerings.
Some of my favorites include: Cream of Broccoli (it never tastes good unless homemade!), Potato and Celeriac, Creamy Vegetable, Mushroom, Barley & Leek, Hunter's Soup, Spicy Black Bean, Pasta e Fagioli, Three Bean, Beef Chili with Beer, Curried Chicken Stew, and Cocoa Cookies. The book includes sections on salad dressings, breads, and sweets to go along with your homemade soup.
The only improvements that could be made with this book would be to add color photographs of the dishes, and a spiral binding so that it could lay flat. Otherwise, the recipes are delicious and offer a great variety. Enjoy!
Terrific, easy soups.......2005-10-10
I love this book, and have started making at least one soup recipe a week from it. It's tough deciding which one to cook, in fact. What I love about it: The recipes are not complicated, and do not call for obscure, hard to find ingredients. She explains things very well and offers helpful tips. Many of the recipes are very inexpensive, too. In addition, most of the recipes don't have big long ingredient lists, which is a big plus in my opinion. And they're not loaded with fat, either. Yet they still taste wonderful. My two favorites are the parsnip soup (which I never would've expected to like!) and the butternut squash with lime, garlic and ginger. I can't praise this book enough.

Colored Gemstones--The Antoinette Matlins Buying Guide : How to Select, Buy, Care for & Enjoy Sapphires, Emeralds, Rubies and Other Colored Gems with Confidence and Knowledge
All the Information You Need to Buy, Collect, Sell--or Simply Enjoy--Sapphires, Emeralds, Rubies and Other Colored Gemstones with Confidence and Knowledge
With more varieties than ever before to choose from, including altogether new gems, revolutionary new cuts, and new ways to buy gems--such as internet auctions and TV shopping--there has never been a more exciting time to buy or collect colored gemstones. But there are also new high-tech treatments and sophisticated frauds to look out for. Lack of information, error, or misrepresentation can make the thrill of buying a gem or piece of jewelry confusing, intimidating, overwhelming, and costly. Buyers need a source of expert guidance. This practical, comprehensive, easy-to-understand guide provides all the information you need in order to know what to look for, and what to look out for, including:
* What qualifies as a "gemstone"?
* How to evaluate color--and its impact on price.
* Deciding between a natural gem and an enhanced gem.
* Colored gemstone synthesis and treatment.
* What to ask when buying the stone.
* What to get in writing.
* How to get what you want within your budget.
* Price guides for popular gems, opals, and synthetic stones.
And much, much more! Written by an "insider," this easy-to-read guide is the "unofficial colored gemstone bible" for anyone who wants to get the most for their money and enjoy what they have purchased.
Customer Reviews:
Useful, but redundant and reprises other sources.......2006-04-21
Antoinette Matlins is a gemstone authority, teacher, and author who has made a large educational contribution to the appreciation of gemstones and jewelry. This book attempts to summarize and synthesize the growing world of colored gems, so that readers and buyers can make informed choices.
She introduces readers to the traditions of zodiac gems & birthstones; addresses the use of the loupe; talks about evaluation of cuts and color. She includes price tables and tables about treatments by gem family; and finally addresses each gem by chapter section. A pleasing color plate section sets off the center of the book.
A problem is that much of the information is repeated constantly throughout the book, while other potentially useful information is missing. Information about her favorites -- emerald, ruby, sapphire -- shows up in the early chapters, to be repeated later in the chapters specifically about these gems. Meanwhile, other information is lacking. Personally, I would like to know the differences between "Swiss blue Topaz," "sky blue Topaz," and "London blue Topaz." Are they different treatments, or are they different names for the same thing? You won't find it here. What about buying gems on Ebay? Could Ebay be a good place for the beginner to explore inexpensive colored gemstones and learn to use tools? Or do the risks outweigh the potential rewards? Do high-roller gem buyers ever use Ebay? In what sorts of cases?
All this said, you will glean useful information that may not be available in other sources about recent changes in certain gems -- e.g., that Aquamarine is now entering the "expensive" classification, and sizes over 10 carats with good color and clarity are becoming hard to find. But overall -- and I regret if this seems hypercritical, but readers need to know -- this feels like a rehash. Although there will be tidbits you will glean here, this book seems to repeat the information in Matlins' other books, without adding much new.
The REAL book to use for gemstone buying is Matlins' EXCELLENT "Gem identification made easy," where she hits on all cylinders. The information in that book -- on stones, tools, and inclusions -- has almost everything here and much more, including a TERRIFIC color plate section on inclusions.
Same Book as Jewelry & Gems Buying Guide.......2005-09-20
The content in this book is almost identical (page for page) to certain sections of Jewelry & Gems: The Buying Guide--How to Buy Diamonds, Pearls, Colored Gemstones, Gold & Jewelry With Confidence and Knowledge (5th Edition). While the content was good, I was looking for something more in-depth. This was not it.
So, if you have Jewelry and Gems, don't buy this book. If you do not, this is a good introduction to colored gemstones.
Consumer Protection Advocate.......2004-03-14
One would not think that competing gemstones titles could generate the passionate allegiances found in the various on-line reviews of those titles. However those allegiances are there and I think I know why - have you ever noticed how people committed to exposing the truth are often reviled? In an industry where deception, rephrased as "enhancements" abound; where too many jewelers justify pawning off on unsuspecting customers something less-than-genuine as, "simply acknowledging reality" or "giving the customer what he wants", Antoinette Matlins stands out as an oracle of truth. This, I'm sure, makes her somthing less than heroic to those who enjoy the easy mark-ups in less-than-genuine articles. (Apparently Antoinette Matlins's father was something of a pioneer in stepping forward and informing the public about what really goes on behind the scenes in the world of gems.)
If you have a passion for truth; are a dedicated and tireless advocate for consumers and consumer rights, and wish to protect yourself or someone you love from unscrupulous sharks in the gem trade, than obtain and read this compact, easy-to-read volume. While there may be other volumes on the market with more breadth and scope, and more abundant pictures, I felt very satisified, after reading this book, that I had gained a solid understanding with which I could begin the perilous navigation of the gem trade.

Beautifully distinctive stencils.......2000-10-31
Paul has taken Egyptian motifs and produced them in glossy plastic stencils. There are six individual design motifs, from a mummy case to an ankh. There's also a nice stencils of the Egyptian god Anubis. These designs are perfect for school or home use. I would recommend this stencil booklet to anyone who loves all thing Egyptian. The price here is beautiful...I paid more than what it is here. Still it's well worth it.

Full Figured Women Must Have.......2007-08-15
Down the Aisle...is an incredible guide for full figured women. It is an absolute page turner...Ms. Canton has certainly done a lot of research and has made our lives so easy. The most amazing fact is this book can be used for everyday styles as well...If I could change the title, I would re-move "wedding"...it is for all women and not limited to the "bride 2 Be". Kudos to Ms. Canton...Job Well Done!

BIG BEAUTIFUL BRIDES .......2007-05-19
What can I say about this book that wasn't included between the pages? IT's wonderful. Finally a book that lets big girls strut their stuff on their special day. Ms. Canton covers everything that a bride may need and then some from make up tips to dress'es that flatter all shapes and sizes. There are dress makers listed in the book to follow up with and locate to see what they may offer. There is even a section on brides who may have a disability and how to handle this when planning a wedding! This book has been a long time coming for us big girls and as a soon to be bride myself I will certainly be praising this book for years to come and to all brides everywhere.

Down That Aisle in Style!: A Wedding Guide for the Full-figured Woman covers EVERYTHING a "curvy" brides needs to know to look her best on her special day. The book is absolutely beautiful and makes a great engagement gift.
Chamein covers everything from head-to-toe, including choosing the proper undergarments to hold you together for that special day. I now have a book that I can refer to my e-newsletter readers who are getting married and do not know where to start.
You WILL NOT be disappointed with this beautiful book which currently hold a prominent space on my coffee table (smile).
"Down That Aisle In Style" should be considered `must' reading for full-figured brides-to-be.......2006-12-10
The average clothing manufacturer sells to a size six, but the average American woman is a size sixteen. When it comes to that very specialized area of clothing designs called the wedding dress, the bride needs to look her very best within traditional gown parameters and doesn't need the stress of going through the usual guess work associated with choosing clothing that will be stylish and appropriate for full-figured women. In "Down That Aisle In Style: A Wedding Guide For Full-Figured Women", Chamein Canton draws upon her many years of experience and expertise in the wedding industry to provide sound advice and moral-boosting encouragement on how to use the fundamentals of design and style to acquire the perfect gown for that perfect day. Profusely illustrated and with a truly "user friendly" text that is both informed and informative (and occasionally inspiring!), "Down That Aisle In Style" should be considered `must' reading for full-figured brides-to-be. It will save them aggravation and anxiety when searching for - and finding - that ideal wedding gown.
Plus Size Brides Will LOVE This Book!.......2006-11-22
Have you found the love of your life and are ready to say, "I do?" If so, Chamein Canton, author of the new book, Down That Aisle in Style: A Wedding Guide For the Full-Figured Woman, can help you have the wedding day of your dreams!

Customer Reviews:
Bought this book on sale.......2007-06-04
I bought this book "on sale" for a dollar ,or such, and for that price, this book was worth it. I still have it in my library.
But, (in my opinion) don't pay full price for this book or you may regret it. However, if paying for this boook at a low$ , then do go for it!
There are some good ideas in this book. However, don't expect the authors to give you hints on where to buy their "stuff", because they wont.
Disappointing.......2007-01-08
Well, I thought this would be a clever book showing how to take the ubiquitous goods available to everyone at every local big box, and turn them into a stylish home. It's not what I expected... it's a few pages on several styles (salon style, bohemian, school house, swedish lite, island, new traditional... that's about half) and for each style there's a few photos showing what's available in mass retailers that suits that style. Not a bad notion, but executionally the concept is a little weak... many of the items in the photos don't ring especially true to the styles they're supposed to exemplify, and many of the tips could easily be gleaned from a (free) IKEA catalog. Sometimes I find that the pictures in a decorating book make it worth the price... not so here. The resources section in the back includes a selective listing of items shown... of the 4 things I was interested it, 3 weren't included in the listing. Wish I'd looked at it in person before I asked for it for Christmas!
Unique concept, well done! .......2006-02-22
Nice theme - take readers through the standard sections of the average department store, whether it be modest to moderately priced (Target) or higher end (Barneys).
Then show them how to adapt the standard lamps, sofas, etc...to the rooms of their choice, creating a unique style and vision. A great starting point for those who aren't sure of their decorating expertise!
Lots of Ideas.......2006-02-22
I like this book because it has all different styles briefly shown in this book. They also give color schemes to creating that particular style. This book is full of bright colors and good ideas but it should not be thought of as a how to guide. I would recomend this book if you don't know what your style is or if you want a variety of different styles.
Book Description
It's the most creative how-to book to come along in years! 100 great ideas and projects will change the way you look at your local home improvement center. With a layout inspired by the store's floor plan, this abundantly photographed guide leads a tour through the different departments, from plumbing to hardware, electrical to lawn and garden, suggesting a whole host of imaginative ways to use what's on the shelves. Many of the projects take advantage of the latest decorating trend: repurposing, where items conceived for one function are used in an entirely different and original way. Craft curtain tiebacks from welded chain, transform glass or metal screens into coasters, turn copper plumping pipe into candleholders. With almost no effort at all, a tool holder becomes a bud vase, a grill tray takes new life as a cool retro TV tray, and standard millwork lumber becomes a Post Coatrack. Only basic do-it-yourself techniques are needed at most.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of Fun Ideas.......2004-07-05
I mistakenly picked this up thinking it would show samples of cabinet knobs for my new house. Instead it takes utilitarian objects like steel pipes or locknuts to make unique home decorations.
Some look arty while others look just makeshift. Some are easy while others require some handyman skills. This really will get you to thinking outside the usual decorating, store bought stuff. I particularly liked the back-to-back fence caps turned into candleholders. The towel bar plus "S" hooks makes a great mug rack, while the upright can light teamed with a radiator grill makes a dramatic light stand for an end table.
Give it a try, for some unique projects.
