Lots of Reading! .......2007-05-29
This book has great suggestions for cooking healthier, however there is a lot of reading!
Loved it for years.......2006-04-01
I have been using this book for several years now. The lasagna recipe and oven baked fried chicken are wonderful. I have made so many of the recipes and they are all very good. Highly recommend.
The best.......2005-11-21
I own quite a bit of cookbooks, and already this is tattered from kitchen use. My husband and daughter love the desserts in this book. It takes a little extra time but the carrot cake is excellent. So is the Italian pot roast. I'm a tweaker when it comes to receipes, but I didn't with this book!
yet another glowing review.......2003-08-09
OK, I couldn't help it. I was browsing for another of Sandra Woodruff's books and decided to add my two cents. I have used this book for 8 years. While dieting I have fended off ravenous family members who swore they would not touch "diet food" with a ten foot pole, yet devour the fat free pizza, calzones, chicken enchiladas, and sticky buns like they were in heaven. My son is now almost 19 and still loves this food. Sandra Woodruff has a gift for making healthy food everyone's preferred choice.
Awesome recipes!.......2003-01-30
I've had this book for nearly ten years. The reason I'm looking at it again online is because I've used it to pieces, literally! I need a new one because mine is faded and falling apart. My family loves the recipes. Many are traditional like lasagne and chicken enchiladas and many are newer, more creative ideas. Honestly, we don't cook the recipes as fat-free. We live in Germany and fat-free food doesn't exist here so we cook with normal cheese, sour cream, tomato sauce, etc. and they taste wonderful. I use this book more than any of the others. There's a vegetarian section, side dishes, etc. They all taste great. You can't go wrong with this cookbook because it has a nice twist from the traditional Betty Crocker recipes.

Buy this book!.......2007-03-31
I just bought this book. I have made 2 receipes already. They got very high remarks from everyone. People commented that they could not believe it was fat free. They were not sugary sweet either. I put too much coffee in the Mocha Cake so it turned into some very decadent brownies that people are going crazy over! I love how she breaks out for each receipe how many calories and fat grams, etc are in each serving. This book comes very highly recommended from one who loves to bake.
FAT FREE BAKING.......2007-02-08
Love the book- bought 8 more similar titles. Replaced all the cholesterol-laden, fat-dripping, high calorie cookbooks I used for years. Great CookBook. Easy - Tasty - Healthy, oh my! LISTEN TO THE TIPS ABOUT LESS TIME! BUT HEY, YOU CAN EAT YOUR MISTAKES.
Taste-Free Baking.......2006-02-24
Unfortunately the recipes I tried from this book did not taste good and turned out rubbery. I do not recommend it.
Good for those starting out in a low fat diet.......2005-06-23
The book gives some good ideas of what you can do for low fat for those starting out. Advanced? It is handy to have the hints in hard copy but most of them I can find on the net.
I got it for husband who has a sweet tooth and a bad heart. He didn't like the recipes from it and he has loved other low fat baking goods that either he [the real baker in the family] or I have made. It had a large number of muffin recipes until I felt as if I was reading a muffin cookbook. That would be nice if either of us liked muffins.
The pie recipes sounded interesting but called for a crust made of fat free graham crackers which is not available in our area. The same with fat free buttermilk. You can't find it here and are not easy to make however the book provides no alternative such as a recipe for fat free graham cracker. That would have been really nice.
It has been stuck on the back self simply because the hints are handy to review otherwise I was very disappointed with the source.
Excellent recipes, although her larger cookbook is better.......2003-10-14
This is an excellent cook book for those who need to cut out as much fat as possible (I make many of the dishes for those in my office who have had heart attacks) and with care the baked goods are great. For those who can afford a bit of fat I prefer the recipes in Sandra Woodruff's larger all-purpose Secrets of a Healthy Kitchen cookbook, which use a little bit of oil in the baked goods. Her quick breads are excellent and the muffins really hearty; a great way to start the morning. I own both this book and the larger green cookbook and bounce back and forth between the two, often combining recipe elements and experimenting.

Having a sweet tooth is penalty enough in life. But that sweets are usually accompanied by enough fat grams to patch Hoover Dam makes dessert time hazardous to your health. Dietitian Sandra Woodruff ventures where few fat-free cooks have gone before by creating more than 150 fat-free and low-fat desserts that are tasty (we do not live by tofu alone) and easy to make. Granted, these recipes are not sugar free, but the calories listed on many of the goodies are less than 150, and on most, under 200 per serving. Full-color pictures accompany several of the more sophisticated presentations. Secrets of Fat-Free Desserts shows you how to have your cake, eat it, and enjoy it, too!

Save your money!.......2002-03-05
I bought this book because it sounded like it would have good receipes. Once I got the book, I didn't find any of them appetizing. A good rule of thumb is if a recipe calls for oil, substitute apple sauce and you'll be cutting the fat..
Fabulous ideas to cut fat out of your diet.......2000-03-22
I know that some fat is good in our diets and I don't advocate eliminating all of it; however I know I personally can eat WAY too much in my desserts. This book has given me tremendous insight into how to reduce and/or cut out the fat in my desserts. The recipes are tasty, moist when they're supposed to be, chewy when they're supposed to be, crisp when they're supposed to be (you get the idea - these are not gooey, nasty fat replacements). I especially like the Prune Puree and have used it in other recipes very successfully. I highly recommend this book as a sensible addition to your healthy living cookbooks.
I HOPE EVERYONE BUYS HERE BOOKS.......1999-01-05
Well let's just say that I have been on a whole lot of diets and of course not lot the weight. I have felt bad about eating and used to think the only way to be slim was to starve myself, and I did. Then I was so sick of being hungry and I went to the library in search of a cookbook on low fat foods and found this book. I copied down some recipies and went home and tried them. WELL I was so impressed that I bought the book and read the whole thing and found out that I could eat 2000 calories a day and loose weight. I have bought 2 of her books and going out tonight to buy her fat free baking book. To this day I have lost 35 pounds in 4 monthes with out depriving myself, wy co-workers are always comenting on my snacking, cause I am always eating, and not just veggies either, I am a chocoholic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Recipes.......2006-02-24
Every recipe I've tried from this book I've liked. Especially the chewy chocolate chip cookies. The recipe turned out surprisingly well for cookies made w/ no butter! I'm watching my weight, but even my family members who are used to the full-fat stuff enjoyed them!! The one problem with this book is that the recipes often call for numerous ingredients or ingredients that are somewhat uncommon, but not impossible to find (oat flour, soy lecithin, etc...). I do recommend it for the person who loves to bake, but who is also trying to watch their weight.

!.......2007-01-18
A good resource for the newly diagnosed but if you are an old hat at this stuff, read something else. It is nice to have on hand though when OTHER people start having problems and they come to you for info. because they know you have problems. You can hand them this to borrow.
Good overview, if a bit outdated.......2004-05-30
This is a very good general introduction to the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis, for the family, friends, or patient that has been recently diagnosed with one of these diseases. It covers the details of the disease and also current treatment IBD (circa 1983). However, please understand that this book has not been updated since 1983. There have been many, many developments in the treatment of these diseases and the prognosis is much better than when this book was written. (They essentially only had Prednisone and Sulfasalizine for treatment at the time). They now have Remicade and other drugs used to treat IBD that are not addressed.
Overall not a bad book, but you can probably find all of this information, plus information on newer developments, in some of the other books on IBD. Needless to say, if you buy this book, don't make it your only book on IBD.
Great information on Crohn's Disease.......2003-12-27
As a Crohn's Disease patient, I used this book as a source for a research project. Although, currently there are more up-to-date sources, this book provided me with a vast amount of background information regarding the disease.
A must have book for anyone suffering from these diseases.......2001-06-02
Six months ago I was faced with the reality that I had Crohn's Disease. At that point I wanted to get my hands on as much reading material as I could on the subject (because when you are sick about all you can do is sit and read anyway). Out of all the books I have read on the subject I can honestly say that this book is one of the best overall books on the subject.
This book is devided in three major sections. The first part is about The Nature of the disease. In this section the book discusses basic definitions, who gets the diseases, what causes them, how it is diagnosed, and systemic manifestations.
The next section is about Treating the Diseases. This section covers medications and their side effects, nutritional complications, surgery, and the threat of cancer.
The last section covers Living with the Diseases. This talks about diseases in children, pregnancy, older people, emotions, hospitalization, life insurance and medical insurance, what to do if you become disabled.
I recommend this book for anyone who suffers with either of these diseases. This book is a fantastic handbook/reference book for people who are sick with these illnesses. It has helped me unterstand my Crohn's disease better then I ever thought possible. I wish you all the best!!
If you have IBD you need this book........2000-10-14
It used to be that this was the only 'laypersons' book out there for people suffering from IBD. Newly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 10 years ago, I found this book to be enlightening and informative. It helped me to get a handle on things when I felt my life spiraling out of control due to a disease I had never even heard of before. Today those suffering from ulcerative colitis and Chrohn's Disease have more reading material at their disposal, but this book remains as the staple for any person suffering from IBD. It can also serve as an invaluable resource to friends and family of IBD survivors who also feel confused and helpless. Anyone who has ever taken prednisone for IBD knows the symptoms and treatments for these diseases can make articulate and unemotional explanations almost impossible to formulate. Handing over a copy of this to your siblings, parents, spouse, or even your roommate is the best thing you can do for them, and for yourself.
Book Description
A virtual treasury, this book has more than 1,670 still banks beautifully presented in color and many more black and white illustrations. Focusing on American and English banks, there are many lovely examples of still banks from other countries as well, all rated in terms of their scarcity. Pages from manufacturer's catalogues are reproduced, and the text relates the histories of the manufacturers, specific details about the banks, and information for collectors about clubs and publications where more information can be obtained. The Moores also include a series of conversion tables which correlate the numbering system used in his book with that of all the other major works on still banks. The Penny Bank Book makes its predecessors obsolete. No enthusiast should be without this entertaining, magnificently organized masterwork.

Cast Iron Banks.......2007-07-22
Great book for the collector. Better than the earlier editions in that it has the prices listed with the pictures instead of in the back of the book.
Still the same banks that were in the earlier editions though.
It's paid for itself.......2000-03-06
I was at an auction and five out of the six banks there were listed in the book.
This book is a necessity if you are going bank shopping.......1999-02-15
The Penny Bank Book is a pictorial and value guide to collecting banks. Containing both good pictures and approximate values, it is the most comprehensive bank collecting book available at this time. It is a must for any serious collector. This is the guide I keep in my car to advise me.

Woven of ribbon, layered of sheers, ruffled with silks, ruched with lace--these are elegant pillows that will lend an expensive look to any room without costing much. With novice to intermediate sewing skills and some pretty scraps of fabric and interesting trims, you can create surface-designed, tailored, heirloom, or freeform pillows that are surprisingly varied and extremely handsome, as evidenced by the many lush color photos. The designs are not all traditional brocades, damasks, linens, and organzas: there's also reverse-appliquéd wool, machine-embroidered horsehair braid, patchwork composed of neckties, and a marvelous novelty pillow that's actually a soft sculpture in the form of a faux-suede grocery bag filled with velvet fruit and vegetables. --Amy Handy

Making Life Easier.......2006-10-12
What an impressive book - you get 400+ pages of ways to make life more comfortable for someone with Alzheimers. These also help the caregiver in a variety of situations.
The advice covers things like how to deal with wandering and gives four types of this behavior. It tells how to eliminate places to hide and rummage, coping with fears (of bathing, of strangers, of abandonment), and managing incontinence.
The book helps with mobility issues, addresses safety and how to manage daily living. It includes a valuable section (38 pages) lists where to find special products from stair lifts to bathing aids to ramps to bedwetting alarms.
I'm so glad to see a book this comprehensive to assist with Alzheimer's needs.
A caregiver's bible.......2000-10-02
Since first reading this book over 14 months ago, I've found it a constant source for information and resources. It addresses the problems I encounter on a daily basis AND gives sources for products that I can use to provide better care for my loved one.
Beverly Bigtree Murphy, author, "He Used to be Somebody,".......2000-02-09
This book is a must for caregivers and professionals facing the challenges of Alzheimer's. It is the first book I've read devoted to Alzheimer's care that offers something more than reasons to institutionalize our people. Caregivers need information, options and where to access tools and resources before they can make informed decisions about their choices or their role as caregiver. As someone who spent 25 years designing rehabilitations plans for handicapped people and another 10 years facing the care of my husband, Tom, who died of this disease in our home, this is the first volume I've picked up that speaks of caregiving in positive, life-giving, do-able terms and not the drudgery that we are all led to believe consumes the process. While it offers pragmatic, workable, affordable solutions to caregivers, it never loses sight of the continued humanity and needs of our family members for love and regard in spite of their loss of cognitive skills. My experience as a caregiver was met with nothing but obsticles in my quest to keep my husband home, a journey I relate in my book, "He Used to be Somebody." I found Tom's care problems were 75% attitude and 25% tools, resources and help. This book offers both to families. I highly recommend it.
Much more than a how to book..........1999-07-19
Mark Warner's book on Alzheimer's proofing your home is more than a how to book. Mr. Warner gives an in-depth description of the ways in which Alzheimer's disease affects a person's life, and the life of the extended family. By understanding the disease in depth and the changes that take place in a person physical and emotional need, there is a context to understanding why modifications and alterations are needed. He explains what to do and why to do it. His approach is that of a loving caregiver who not only wants to make the home safe and secure, but also wants to raise the quality of life. . Modifications are practical, but also designed to bring comfort. Even after over two decades of working professionally with people with memory loss, many of his suggestions caught me by surprise. I kept saying to myself, "why didn't I think of that?" He addresses all the behaviors associated with the disease, from wandering to agitation, and suggests environment solutions that could ease the situation. Not only will this bring a higher level of comfort to the person with the disease, but many of the suggestions are a benefit for anyone who wishes to have a safe and barrier free home. I recommend this book to anyone caring for someone with Alzheimer's, anyone involved in home care, and anyone who is interested in altering environments to meet specific needs of unique individuals. Like any thoughtful book, his ideas about adapting environments to the needs of people with Alzheimer's disease also stretches one's thinking about changing environments for anyone with specific needs, or who wants to think about the highest level of safety for family members.
...THE BEST OF THE BEST!.......1999-07-01
"...Alzheimer's Proofing Your Home" is the most complete, most helpful, and most insightful volume I have read on the subject of AD care. With incredible attention to detail, every issue one could encounter is addressed individually. It isn't enough to have a how-to-do-it manual with AD - Mark confronts matters like behavior, wandering, mobility, safety and comfort with deep sensitivity and compassion. A rich, in-depth source of information, Mark explains in detail how to transform any home into a safe haven in a manner that the patient will find warm and welcoming. Cognitive, spatial, and emotional deficits can be compensated for using Mark's well thought out guidelines, and I wish his book had been around when I began caregiving many years ago. There are many books on the subject, all filling a need; but Mark's is far and away superior to anything I've read, which is considerable. Hundreds of situations and their remedies are explored. Concerns encountered as AD progresses are addressed one by one, with a wealth of hints, tips, and shortcuts that are the lifesaver of harried caregivers. Easy to accomplish safety and comfort measures are provided - how needed! Emphasis is placed on concerns all CGs share - how to keep loved ones protected and content, AD being the antithesis of both. Mark has given us an instructional book, made warm and personal because it's about individuals and their needs. There is a comprehensive listing of product and service providers for caregivers, and most of the numbers are toll free. The title of this book does not begin to do it justice, it's so much more. Plus, it's very attractively bound - a beautiful volume of superior quality. Among my treasured books on the subject of dementia caregiving, this is my bible. ..........Sue B.
