Fabulous cookbook - withstands the test of time!.......2006-04-27
I've had my copy of Seasoned with Sun since 1978 and am purchasing this version for my 3 grown daughters. This cookbook has grown up with our family (I was raised in El Paso but moved away in 1979) and am thrilled that two family "must-haves" are still in - Jim's Carrot Cake and Sour Cream Banana Pecan Cake.
This book has made me look good for years - now it's my daughters' turn!
Terrific Southwestern Cookbook, also great general recipes.......1999-08-31
This must be the BEST Junior League Cookbook around. It is beautiful, with wonderful Southwestern illustrations. It's layout is unique and easy to use with great tips and hints. All the recipes were thoroughly tested by local families. But the best part of all is the great Southwestern (Mexican) recipes that are easy to follow - no weird ingredients unless reasonable substitutes are listed. And they are absolutely delicious. This is a cut above. It sounds like I'm in Junior League, but I'm not - I just LOVE the cookbook. I found it here because I want to send one to a friend in another part of the country. It's a real favorite of mine.
Book Description
The automaton is the playful collaboration of the artist and the artisan, with sculpture, painting, music, costume, and mechanics all playing a part in its creation. In Automata: The Golden Age, Christian Bailly opens with a depiction of mid-19th-century Paris, where French automaton-makers lived and worked. There follow the little-known histories of the seven leading makers, from their establishment mid-century to the decline of production after the First World War. Here, for the first time, names, dates, and chronologies are accurately established to present a reference of inestimable value. In addition, more than 150 automata are photographed in color, with many more depicted in facsimile pages from vintage catalogs.

Back in print! THE seminal work on automata!.......2004-12-17
If you have a true passion for Victorian automata, this is a must-have book... in fact, this may be the only book you need. Bailly covers all the major manufacturers of the era, including Vichy, Roullet, Decamps, Phalibois, and more in this hefty oversize tome. Each chapter details everything about the master automaton makers, including the company history and ephemera, diagrams of the inner workings and mechanisms, what the original keys look like for that company, dates of manufacture for various models, and what set the companies apart from each other.
Perhaps even more fascinating is section 3, "Inside the Magic", which offers photographs of more internal mechanisms, explains how they work complete with movement diagrams, shows how an automaton is properly restored, provides information about musical movements, and much more.
Copiously illustrated throughout with loads of fantastic full color images of period automata, most of which are in beautiful original condition or superbly restored. There are also perhaps hundreds of black & white photos and illustrations, including copies of period catalog pages from three of the larger companies (Vichy, Roullet & Decamps, and Lambert).
Prior to its re-release, the original printing of this book was approaching the $1000 mark on the used market, and if you take a look inside you'll understand why. Nothing else like it has ever been produced or likely ever will -- this glorious celebration of the golden age of automata will have you spellbound for many years to come. Leave it on your coffee table and watch your guests become entranced!

Jackson outlines the simple tools and techniques needed and even offers encouragement and tips on how to create one-of-a-kind revolutionary designs from craft-store patterns with subversive sentiments all your own.
Customer Reviews:
Best cross-stitch book ever.......2007-10-10
I've been an embroiderer since I was 7. In all that time, it never occurred to me to even try counted cross-stitching. It just looked, for lack of a better phrase, like "baby stuff".
Not this. Julie Jackson has cured me, I think. Her cross stitching kits and charts mix pretty boring, traditional stuff with some eye-scorching language. I love them. I don't think I'd put any of these up until my little one is older - she's 5 1/2 now - but I'd make 'em. Oh yes. I would.
Ms. Jackson even gives charts for a few different alphabet styles, to allow you to make up your own in case these don't go quite far enough for you. If you're like me and haven't even bothered with counted cross-stitch, you owe it to yourself to at least give this book a try.
Cross Stitch: Not Just for Old Ladies Anymore.......2007-09-23
When I started cross stitching to assist with my quitting smoking, my husband didn't really make fun of me because he knew it would help. When I continued to do it, he told me I was a 65-year old woman trapped in a 25 year old's body . . . . until this book came and I started stitching the patterns in it.
One of the downfalls is that lettering is all more or less the same "font" throughout the various sayings or patterns with little variation. However, the patterns are simple enough for a beginner, but fun enough that a seasoned pro would have the desire to revert back.
The best part of the book overrides all of it's (few) faults: Julie Jackson encourages you to go beyond the patterns. As a still relatively new stitcher, I bought the little packs at the craft store and was terrified to change or deviate from them for fear of being "wrong." This book encourages you to not only stitch the words you think or say when you make a mistake, but to personalize the craft and make the project your own.
Subversive Cross Stich has changed my husband's mind about cross stitch being just for old ladies, because if any old lady stitched any of the patterns in here, she'd be pretty damn cool in my book. And if she were appalled at the patterns, I'm sure Julie Jackson would tell her to "Kiss My Grits."
Rocked my cross stitchin' world.......2007-09-14
I've loved the Subversive Cross Stitch since I stumbled across the page awhile back, but I hadn't gotten the chance in my crafting schedule to give a second thought to actually creating such lovalicious signs. Until a coworker told me how easy cross stitch is and the memories of my childhood cross stitching days flooded back. This is one of the easiest and fastest ways to start out your crafting career. Most craft shops have the canvas and thread that are required and the only other thing you need is this nifty little book, which contained all of my favourite sayings from the website including beeyotch with the little bees. I'm making my mom the Bitch in Kitchen for her Xmas present. Everyone looks at a completed cross stitch project like it's the hardest thing in the world, but this book makes it so easy and simple! Plus, who wouldn't get a good chuckle from some of these great sayings!
Really where would you put this?.......2007-09-08
Im sorry I wouldn't want these words in my home, in front of my kids or any other kids. I guess if you want to live with this under a curtain go ahead and put your time and display it under a sheet. Sorry, the world is ugly enough, why spread it! And I would never tell someone to go F-themselves and greet them at the door with this picture in my hall.
Definitely a great purchase........2007-08-29
This book is great. I laughed so hard when I looked at all the designs. Usually when I buy a craft book there are a few things I won't make in it. Not this book! I'll definitely be stitching them all. Definitely worth my money.

Too busy bitchin' to do some stitchin'?.......2007-01-28
This is the perfect calendar for those of us who love the idea of the subversive cross stitch kits but can't seem to find the time to actually make one.
And, yes, it's true-- there's no patterns included. Then again, my Food for Thought calendar from last year didn't have any instructions on how to make poodles out of cauliflower, but I still loved it. Go figure.
Perfect for those of us who enjoy bichin stichin in our decors.......2006-08-05
but don't have the time or dexterity to stich it ourselves.
Calendar only; not patterns.......2006-08-01
I don't know why, but I expected this to be a true cross stitch calendar with the patterns for the designs included. There was only a single pattern. This calendar is all about pictures of the designs only. I'm disappointed because it wasn't what I expected. If you're looking for the subversive patterns, this calendar isn't the way to go.

Smart, Saucy, Sarcastic and Sassy! All My Favorite Things.......2006-08-19
Well packaged, high quality greeting cards that are unlike anything you can pick up at your local grocery or drug store. ADORABLY cheesy "needlepointed" envelopes serve as the icing for the cake inside. Brilliantly funny, especially for those, like me, with a slanted sense of humor. Don't have enough time to stitch up all the little messages yourself? (See the book by the same author). Until you are ready to undertake that (which I will be), I cannot imagine a better way to express and share your sweet sentiments with others. A great deal and a great find! Looking forward to many gleeful moments of mailing fun! Hip-hip-hooray!
When Hallmark just won't do ..........2006-04-03
... send something Subversive instead!
If you're all serious and sentimental and not the least bit cynical, move on. In fact, move on IMMEDIATELY! This stuff is not for you!
But if you're cynical and sarcastic and, well, just a smart-ass, you need this box of cards. Seriously! Know someone who's not too keen on getting older? Perfect opportunity to send a "Happy F@#%&ing Birthday" card. Or if a friend is going through a tough romance, commiserate with a "Love Stinks" card.
See? So useful for modern living! You really ought to have a box handy - I do!
When you want to send the very best..........2006-04-02
...These are the cards that you're looking for. Who needs fluffy bunny cards to beat around the bush when Julie Jackson's Subversive Cross Stitch notecards tell it like it is.
The Anti-Hallmark.......2006-04-02
Great for so many occasions. I hope this is the start of a revolution. Surely the next set will have my favorite design from the Subversive Cross Stitch book, which is "Have a Nice Life." There are so many people i'd like to send THAT to.

Would not recommend.......2007-07-05
I was very disappointed in this book. I love decorating books for home decorating projects. There is not one thing in this book I would use to decorate. They show a lot of painting with stencils and other projects that I would never put in my house. Im glad I bought this used.
Fun, creative ideas.......2006-05-19
I love books that offer decorating ideas for those on a budget. Even if I don't follow the projects and suggestions exactly, I usually use them as a springboard for other ideas. Many of the projects and ideas in this book I will definitely try. Great resource.
Under $100 and worth a million.......2003-08-09
This is a really excellent do-it-yourself decorating book. Here are some of the projects I found appealing:
1. A faux china hutch for a bare kitchen wall. Using moldings from the lumber yard, paint and wallpaper, you can create a hutch-like decoration for the wall and put decorative plates or platters on it, held by plate rails. The wallpaper gives the effect of depth.
2. Curtains with a sheer top and panel below. Solves the problem of how to curtain a window with a set of window panes above (like a transom.)
3. A swag made with Roman Shade tape to gather it. The designer employs two fabrics and some piping to give the swag some detail and interest.
4. A quilt rack on the wall, using a curtain rod and two finials.
5. A headboard made of two Euro square pillows and two flanged shams, hanging on a section of curtain rod capped with finials.
6. Chair covers with ties, to cover straight-backed chairs or folding chairs.
There are a lot more ideas in here, for inside and even the garden. All are do-able with a sewing machine and average sewing skill, and average carpentry skills like nailing, cutting, painting. If you have no table saw to rip 1x6 poplar to 1x4, you can always have the lumberyard do this and other cuts for you.
A very excellent book with lots and lots of useful ideas. Highly recommended.

This is one of the few decorating books that would make everyone happy, because it has a section on such a range of styles. But, it's short and sweet. Giving you several key ideas that you could implement in your own bathroom for under $100 for each of the various styles.
