Book Description
A raw foods diet advocates exactly that: raw foods. No cooking, no grilling, no steaming, no application of heat of any kind. Why? Because eating food closest to its natural state engenders a tremendous exchange of energy between food and body. The result, over time, is a feeling of buoyant, radiant health. Tackling head-on the skepticism likely to greet proponents of what the world sees as a "fad" diet, renowned nutritionist and long-time raw-foods adherent Brigitte Mars presents historical data, case studies, and scientific evidence confirming the efficacy of raw foods diets in: Increasing energy levels Boosting immune system function Improving digestive function Dispelling depression Supporting emotional stability Clearing the skin Sustaining overall good health In addition, Mars points out the environmental benefits of the raw foods diet, making a case for eating raw foods as a means of reducing waste, making the most of agricultural practice, and reducing the human footprint on the earth. Whether the reader wants to jump right into an all-raw diet or just wants to introduce more raw foods into the diet, Mars offers gentle encouragement and practical instruction. Readers will find advice on planning a balanced diet to meet their nutritional needs, combining foods for best effect, preserving raw foods, equipping the raw kitchen, sprouting, juicing, and every other technique that makes the raw foods diet simple, delicious, and healthful. In-depth profiles describe the nutritional and health benefits of hundreds of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seasonings. Perhaps most important, Mars provides more than 200 kitchen-tested, real-people-approved raw foods recipes. Under Mars_s instruction, readers will enjoy making everything from juices and shakes to salads, soups, dressings, yogurts, crackers, spreads, dips, vegetable burgers, curries, vegetable pastas, wraps, and more.
Customer Reviews:
really great and well researched book!.......2007-09-04
Out of all the books on Raw Foods I have read and recipes I have implemented, this book by far exceeds the standards of research I was expecting. The book gives decidedly more detailed information on nutritional, vitamin, mineral and green living approaches along with great Tips to hone any raw foodists repertoire. It is very carefully written as well for the newbie to raw food and goes slowly to educate you on the best approaches. I have found the recipes to be delicious and quite easy to create even for the novice. Kudos to Brigitte Mars!
Pick up a blender, a dehydrator, a food processor, and this book!.......2007-05-12
As a fourteen year veteran of vegan living, I recently began the transition into a raw diet. Rawsome! has been very instrumental in my learning process, and recipes that I hadn't dreamed possible are deliciously spread through the pages. From general preparation principles to cakes to almond "cheese", this book is a fundamental 'must have' for vegetarian raw foodists.
*I would recommend picking up sprout bags, a dehydrator (w/sheets), and a blender and/or food processor to help along with general food preparations.
Pretty Good.......2007-05-12
Some of the recipes are great and some of them are terrible. I have not found a recipe for the dehydrater that tastes good and wish I never bought one.
Very good for Raw Beginners.......2007-05-02
This is my first Raw title and I quite enjoyed it! It lays out information in an easy to follow structure and the content was very informative. She gives an account of her personal experience followed by what raw living is and isn't, reasons to go raw, how to equip your raw kitchen, eating with your family and friends etc. A lot of this info is very useful. The encyclopedia would be good for those who don't know a lot about the foods around them. Luckily I have a copy of the Doctor's Book of Food Remedies which is very comprehensive and it also tallies with what I have read in this book although this book adds some that I wasn't familiar with. I have not tried any of the recipes as yet (time constraints) but I HAVE read through all of them. Most of the ingredients seemed very accessible until I got to two of the recipes in the dessert section which called for 'agar flakes'... ??? Needless to say a more experienced raw foodist would know what they are and where to find them. If you have no clue you could just omit them or nix those recipes from your experiment list :)
I like that she gives little tips throughout the book like what to use in place of rice, variations on flax crackers, sandwich ideas etc. I also love that in her recipes she tells you the shelf/fridge life of the products and where the best place is to store some of them.
If the book is so great why did you minus a star?? - 1. Many of the recipes call for tahini and although it may be readily available to a lot of people, I have found some very simple recipes online for it so it would have been useful to include a recipe here in the book for those who would have found this product unable to obtain or who would prefer to make their own at home 2. A LOT of the recipes contain salt (which to be fair can be omitted) and since I haven't used salt since the early 90s, it's something I noticed especially. Instead of salt I flavour my food with fresh minced garlic, onion and chives which salt sensitve individuals can try. (This can possibly be dried and stored but I've never tried it so can't say how that works) 3. A lot of recipes call for Nama Shoyu which again may not be accessible to everyone so an alternative seasoning could be provided.
On the whole I'm glad I purchased the title and would definitely recommend it to anyone who's interested in purchasing.
Great Book!.......2007-04-06
Rawsome is great for beginners because it has tons of nutritional information that is thoroughly researched. The book doesn't feed you all the junk science many other recipe books do and it also has great recipes! This book is a great addition to everyones raw library. The book has a sprout chart for a guide, it also has a seasonal chart for when some vegetables and fruits are in season. This recipe book has references in the back so you can always go check out other books and websites. I found the information to be very beneficial. If you need a book with more than recipes and don't feel like reading tons of testimonials and junk science this book is for you!

Out of 212 diets - this one worked........2007-09-29
This is the only diet that has worked for me. I have sent this book to a number of my friends, I weighed 365 when I got the book. I have lost 76 pounds. I lose one pound per week. I am at 289 and shooting for 225. I was morbidly obese. I learned a lot. I scorned spuds - now I eat them every day. I thought fish was a diet food. I no longer eat avocadoes or peanuts. A Mickey D double cheezeburger costs me 2 pounds each. It puts on a pound and I dont't lose a pound that week. Same with BK's Whopper JR. I used to buy a double cheeze burger on the way to food shopping -- so I wouldn't be hungery while shopping. I don't do that any more. I am now in the habit of driving straight home after a trip to town and not stopping in for a burger on the way home -- like I used to. I tried all the other diets--and none of them worked. When I go to an all you can eat buffett, I fill up with fruits and vegetables. I am just as full as I used to be eating the non VEGAN food. The first few months on the diet, the VEGAN food would not sustain me for more than about three hours. Now that I have been a VEGAN for some time, the VEGAN diet sustains me as long as the meat diet used to. I went to my friends Bar
A lot of common sense .......2007-03-27
Didn't really learn anything from this or any of the other 50 diet books that I have bought over the years.
Easy ready, full of information........2007-02-22
I found this book easy to read with some great ideas on how foods affect us and how they can promote weight loss. Recipes are easy and tasty!!
THIS IS A VEGETARIAN BOOK.......2006-12-06
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK unless you are a vegetarian or willing to change to one! I bought this book along with "Fat-Burning Foods and Other Weight-Loss Secrets." The title is very deceiving. While it does give you information on the fat and calorie content on certain foods, it does not give you advice on how to balance your meals if you eat meat; this book is just telling you not to eat any animal product or saturated fats. That's it!!! If you are thinking about either of these books, I would definitely prefer "Fat-Burning Foods and Other Weight-Loss Secrets." It has more information, and it doesn't stop you from eating meat!!!
An excellent PART of losing weight.......2006-07-05
I was initially very excited about the concept of the negative calorie diet, as it gave me the impression that I'd be able to shed pounds while eating as much as I wanted. But the truth is I still felt hungry even when eating tons of vegetables. For anyone that uses this technique, I also suggest listening the the program at mc2method.com/LoseWeight which is really what I needed to get past the constant hunger that was causing my weight problem.

Through a series of major reviews by influential scientists from Britain and elsewhere, this book details the contribution nutrition research has made and continues to make to the health of humans and animals. The volume has been prepared on the Golden Jubilee of the Nutrition Society and celebrates fifty years of nutrition research. Here the reader will find state-of-the-art chapters on energy and the major nutrients, including vitamins and trace minerals, and their influence on reproduction, lactation, growth, and development. Research on malnutrition in the developing world and in Germany in the 1940s together with successful feeding of the British people during the Second World War are discussed. The volume also surveys the impact of diet on human health today and the opportunities for further reducing the risk of major chronic disease.

Not a waste of money, but nor worth $30.......2004-04-10
some good ideas, but not worth the original price.
Living on Lesssss- Less is more with this book Don't buy It........2003-04-08
Don't waste your money! Buy the first book its great...
Some good stuff, but nothing new.......2002-04-10
If you subscribe to the Mother Earth News, Countryside Magazine, or Backwoods Home -- don't bother buying this book. If you've read your magazines, you know all this stuff already.
Otherwise, it is a great compilation of material that a beginner might not know. It's a heavy read, but great if you have a pressing interest in the subject material. It's heavy on the "getting there" and lighter on the "when you've gotten there" info. I've read better books on the subject -- but I've read worse, too.
A good book for those stating the process of self sufficency.......1999-01-18
This is a very good book for pointing people twords the path of self-sufficence. It is a general guide book that will allow people to get an idea of the trials and joys to be found in the back to the land movement. It is a starter book. The topics are general, and specic information is left to more specialized manuals. But for those who are beginng to think about taking an alternative to the "rat race" this book should give a good jump start.

Customer Reviews:
Great design charts, but too cutesy.......2007-08-14
This book was somewhat of a disappointment for me. On the positive side, the design charts were clear and easy to follow, and I appreciated the publication of the actual stitch count by each chart. However, that said, the patterns were too small and overly cutesy - almost to the point of being in bad taste.
Best "Small Designs" Book.......2001-12-21
This book has been around for some time now and since I'm not partial to small designs because I prefer big projects,I never got around to buying this book, but since Amazon has introduced its new and wonderful "Look Inside" feature I got the chance to look through some of its pages and found that the designs though small are rich with color and detail. The designs are original they range from playful and fun to sophisticated and fancy. The charts are of good size,in black and white but very clear to follow. The photographs of all the end results are included. Some of the designs can be done in as little as 15 minutes, the most complicated in two hours.I'm glad I bought this book,I've already finished a simple project with one of its designs which only took me an hour and a half. With 501 designs I'm sure to find a couple of hundred more to work on.
Good designs but a disappointment.......2001-07-07
This book would be a great addition to my collection if I didn't have a collection. The designs themselves are great but these designs have been used in other books or are so similaar to other patterns in several other books that I regret buying. The carts are in black and white. They are small designs and easy to finish in a couple of hours. Quite a few of these small designs change colors over 10 times. If you have few cross stitch books, this one would be a great addition to your beginning collection. But if you have a large collection, examine this before buying.
Great Hamster Cross Stitch!.......2000-08-24
I loved the variety of the designs in all catagories, but loved the pet patterns the most. The three hamster designs were especially adorable and very appreciated since designs of life-like rodents (especially hamsters, guinea pigs, rats etc.) are impossible to find.:-) I hope that there will be ferret cross stitch patterns soon!
A very enjoyable, rich Design Book.......1999-05-26
The book is my most tresured and used possessions. I also do my own designs but often use 501 Cross Stich Designs for a refrence.Recently I found an other use for the instructions , Iam using the designs as audioscope paterns for WebTv and have had many complinents on the finished pictures, just to bad thatPC's can not read them, they are missing out. The book is definitely my most used craftbook, with the many designs for all occassions.
Book Description
Whether you want to learn tricks of the trade or just the basics, Grand Finishes for Carpentry can help make your home carpentry project a fun, simple, and rewarding experience. In this easy-to-understand instruction manual, Matt Nikitas takes both the unskilled beginner and the seasoned pro through molding installation, with emphasis on each step of the process and the tools it takes to give you the home you've always wanted.Beginning with the five joints--butt joint, outside miter, coped joint, scarf joint, and mitered return--Nikitas lets uninitiated readers and do-it-yourselfers understand what they'll be constructing, and where and why. But even the seasoned home carpenter will find valuable tips, entertaining on-the-job stories and important advice (should you invest in a chop saw? a pneumatic nail gun?) that can help anyone make all the right decisions about molding installation.Grand Finishes for Carpentry also offers an in-depth description of the various items that make up the carpenter's toolbox for molding installation, including chisels, planes, the hammer, nail set, the saws, files and rasps, T-bevel, and try square.Just a few of the topics this guide covers: * how to assess and purchase the molding stock * base moldings in your home: both single-piece and multiple-piece * quick and easy picture molding installation * wainscotting design * did moldings appear first as ornament or necessity? * wood and its durability * multiple-piece crown moldings * the three carpenters: the Framer, the Millworker, and the Interior Finisher * various window header configurations * MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) * installing base and crown moldings on uneven surfaces * cutting odd inside and outside corners (other than forty-five degrees) * "greasing" the nail * finishing with paint or stain and polyurethane
Customer Reviews:
not very good.......2006-03-03
I actually must have checked this book by accident, but I read it anyway. Im a professional carpenter, so I would say, If you know what a hammer and saw are then you dont need to read this book.I guess Im being a little cruel. If you dont have a single clue about carpentry then this book is ok for you. we make better drawings on the job.
Thorough and Easy to Follow.......2005-02-01
This book had thorough and very straight-forward instructions for basics like crown and base molding and more complicated things like wainscoting and windows and doors. We used it to put in a wainscoting trim in our dining room: there was no bull or misleading steps. We followed the author's instructions exactly and had no surprises! It all went in great! Our neighbors think I should become a carpenter now! It's a wonderful book for a beginner.
inspiring project.......2002-03-15
I know very little about working with wood or the tools needed and GRAND FINISHES FOR CARPENTRY was a perfect choice for me. It didn't insult my intelligence and was never condescending yet explained everything so clearly. I have two other molding books but this one pointed out several of the problems I might have encountered, whereas the others glossed over them. Though not a lot of pictures I thought there were just enough for me to accomplish creating and installing my own wainscoting in our diningroom. My wife even helped, and we both enjoyed the whole process.
basic info - little else.......2002-03-11
I was disappointed in "Grand Finishes". A great review in the L.A. Times led me to purchase it sight-unseen. It arrived and I was surprised to see very few photos and prety much no ideas for design. Far from grand... There is some good basic info on tools and terminology, to be sure, but "step-by-step" seems a stretch. The installation of wainscoating, a large and potentially complicated project, is covered in just a few pages with mostly sketches and small black and white photos. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone looking for a guide on an upcoming molding project.
Grand Finishes For Moldings.......2001-12-08
I was surprised to read the earlier negative reviews. I found the instruction thorough and very clear: I've put in base molding before but got a lot out of the crown installation step-by-steps. The book's VOICE OF EXPERIENCES had many helpful hints that added a little levity to my projects but also pointed out several pitfalls I might not have ordinarilly known about. This is the third book of Nikitas's that I've purchased and I use them ("GRAND FINISHES FOR WALLS AND FLOORS" and "GRAND FINISHES FOR TILE") religiously as reference books. Definitely a keeper.
