Book Description

From 1997-1999 Donovan Kelly wrote a column for the Washington Post called "Crummy But Good" in which he reviewed local eateries that looked dubious from the outside, but that offered something beyond the ordinary on the inside. His popular column, the ongoing radio series (WAMU-FM) and the never-ending suggestions from his legion of "crummy-but-good" scouts are brought together for this first compilation of reviews of the 50 best establishments meeting the highly technical crummy-but-good criteria. "Crummy" means a place that looks so bad from the outside that you would hesitate to take your mother inside, especially if she were wearing her good dress. "But Good" means that, once inside, you find some combination of a good menu, good food, relaxing atmosphere, friendly people, and reasonable prices that makes you want to come back. And maybe bring your smart aleck brother from New Jersey who thinks he’s seen everything.

The restaurants are located in DC, and nearby and not so nearby Maryland and Virginia, and West Virginia. Included is a completely unbiased (?) list of the ten best places as well as a chronicle of the ongoing, ever-controversial Crummy but Good Crabcake War.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Humorous and informative.......2005-08-21

After having visited one of the establishments reviewed, I thought it would be interesting to read of all such eateries listed in the book. Crummy can also serve up wonderful meals. I enjoyed Donovan Kelly's writing style and humor along with the pertinent information.

5 out of 5 stars Great Travel, Food Book.......2002-10-29

Written by a restaurant expert, "Quest for the Holy Grill" is one of the funniest, most well-written travel guide/ restaurant review books I've read in a long time.

If you live in Maryland, Washington DC, or Virginia, you will find this book to be an invaluable tool to find great restaurants you may have overlooked in the past.

3 out of 5 stars Great For General/Basic Intro. to Sniper Rifles.......2000-06-03

This book is a good intro. to sniper rifles; although it doesn't go into enough detail to make it anything remotely like a field/training manual, it does give the reader a little info. on many different rifles in many different cals. etc. If you'd like to purchase an accurate rifle with sniping accuracy (.5 MOA) and you don't want to spend the big bucks to do it, give this book a read. It will also give you a brief history lesson on various rifles. It's an easy read, and well worth buying.

The usual puff by Smith for one of her coterie, as though she were the only one that could see and write. Gawd but she is pretentious. At least in book-form Smith is not scathing, destroying some artist that did not bow and scrape to her most powerful stature. How many Bartlett works do you figure her family and friends own? Great reproductions of a much over-rated work, though it is a very fine serial effort.

        Product Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on artists’ colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries in China face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying artists’ colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries to China? How important is China compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of artists’ colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries vary from one country of origin to another in China? On the supply side, China also exports artists’ colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries. Which countries receive the most exports from China? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for artists’ colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries in China. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for artists’ colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries for those countries serving China via exports, or supplying from China via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where China fits into the world market for imported and exported artists’ colors, paint driers and mastics, and coloring preparations used in the ceramic, enameling, and glass industries. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for China in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that China is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize China compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for glass frit, powder, granules, flake, and prepared pigments, opacifiers, colors, and vitrifiable enamel used in ceramic, enameling, and glass industry in China. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for glass frit, powder, granules, flake, and prepared pigments, opacifiers, colors, and vitrifiable enamel used in ceramic, enameling, and glass industry for those countries serving China via exports, or supplying from China via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where China fits into the world market for imported and exported glass frit, powder, granules, flake, and prepared pigments, opacifiers, colors, and vitrifiable enamel used in ceramic, enameling, and glass industry.

                  Product Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on glass frit, powder, granules, flake, and prepared pigments, opacifiers, colors, and vitrifiable enamel used in ceramic, enameling, and glass industry in India face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying glass frit, powder, granules, flake, and prepared pigments, opacifiers, colors, and vitrifiable enamel used in ceramic, enameling, and glass industry to India? How important is India compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of glass frit, powder, granules, flake, and prepared pigments, opacifiers, colors, and vitrifiable enamel used in ceramic, enameling, and glass industry vary from one country of origin to another in India? On the supply side, India also exports glass frit, powder, granules, flake, and prepared pigments, opacifiers, colors, and vitrifiable enamel used in ceramic, enameling, and glass industry. Which countries receive the most exports from India? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? 4 out of 5 stars Finding the Keys to Your Personal Decorating Style.......2007-02-17

The book is not only beautiful, it's good as resource or reference material for the many people I assist in decorating their homes.

                  1 out of 5 stars Old news.......2004-06-28

There is nothing new here, and what is here is a mess when it comes to how the book is organized. The author (and I admit I don't know who she is) doesn't seem to know what she's talking about because her style categories are ill defined, so the book comes off as an anything-but-helpful mishmash of pretty rooms. If you want real decorating help, keep looking.

3 out of 5 stars Good for true beginning decorators.......2004-06-16

Many people are familiar with Chris Madden's work by now, particularly if they are Oprah fans or pay any attention to the style world. If so, this book won't be much help in refining or defining their personal decorating style. However, if the thought of decorating your home space is overwhelming, if your rooms look like a mish-mash of things that likely shouldn't be there, this will help you sort through what you are drawn to, and make better long-range decisions in purchasing furniture, paint, and the trickiest part for most people, what to include (and edit out) in accessories to "make a mood" in your home.

My biggest gripe about this book is that each category she defines--Romantic, Adventurous, and Serene--have more overlap than not. Her "Adventurous" bedroom is more romantic than not, and many of the "Romantic" rooms fit into the Serene category, based on her definitions of color and texture. This is fine for those of us who don't like labels, and who shift between categories without getting all worked up over decorating principles. Yet, if you're not confident in your skills and are looking for solid advice, this will be completely confusing. All the more reason to not take this, nor any book of decorating tips, too seriously. Homes are meant to be lived in, and the best advice anyone can give--which Ms. Madden has always done--is to go with what you love, edit out what you don't, and keep looking at pictures and products to keep your ideas fresh and away from looking like a set period piece or junkyard!

                  5 out of 5 stars I haven't read this book yet.... but.......2004-05-21

I can't wait to read it!!! I think she is just FAB... and I'm sure I'll get tons out of it!
