The Bible.......2006-01-29
I refer to this book as the Betty Crocker of Korean Cooking because it reminds me of my mother's Betty Crocker from the 70s. The layout is very glossy with lots of colour photographs and step by step instructions in very dry, matter-of-fact, subject-verb-occassional predicate style. This book is probably not for you if you need it as a complete primer on Korean food or if you are the kind of cook who needs to know everything down to the last 1/8 of a tsp you will find this, and probably most Korean cookbooks, kind of frustrating as Koreans (like many cooks worldwide) are not really known for their exacting measuring in cooking ;-) If, however, you are the kind of cook who is familiar with Korean cuisine and wants guidelines on how to do it, this is THE BOOK for you!
For novices I would recommend Kwak's Dok Suni and for those more experienced cooks interested in a more cultural bent or just more background I would bundle this book with Heppinstall's Growing Up in a Korean Kitchen, which covers a lot of the same recipes but in a completely different format.
As real as it gets...........2005-10-12
Having been stationed in Korea, being taught a few dishes while there, eating at Korea House Restaurants in the US, I found these recipes to yield authentic flavors I initially found in Korea.
Over the years I've consistently stuck with and cooked a few traditional Korean dishes. The recipes in this book are wonderful and the flavor and aromas that have come from my own attempts at new and familiar recipes just splendid!
Highly recommended.
Recipes for the real thing.......2005-04-01
I found the book very easy to use, and the finished Korean dishes tasted just like those at my favorite Korean restaurant. Then one day I discovered the Korean cook in that restaurant had a set of "recipe cards" in Korean, with the exact same photos and same recipes! These recipes are "real."
reminiscent of my mom's cookbooks.......2004-07-23
first of all- if you're going to buy any books by noh chin-hwa- make sure this is the one. i bought traditional side dishes by the author- and it was basically just a chapter cut out of this book. i should have listened to the person who also stated the fact in a review.
i'm twenty something- and this cookbook reminds me of my mom's chinese cookbooks from the 70's. Sure it's photography and dish ware are dated- but the recipes and instructions are fantastic. i'm completely leery of the recipe for raw liver, and it is true the instructions do seem very time consuming... however i read in Korean cuisine by wei-chaun- that a lot of traditional korean cooking techniques are very daunting tasks.
i bought about 6 korean cookbooks after eating at a korean restaurant- they all seem to have the same dishes with very little variation. this book however expands beyond the bulgogi... the chige...and the kimchi. One such item would be the fermented soy bean lumps. now i don't intend to try this recipe- but i found it really interesting that the instructions include- "remove the mold and dust from the fermented soybean lumps two days before using" I'm chinese american- so i'm pretty much used to weird ingredients. the american side of me however is pretty nitpicky about "is this clean? is that mold? is that still good?" i often buy dried wood ears- but because they have a faint white moldy look to them i'm reluctant to actually use them.
anyways this is what i consider to be what a cookbook should be. pictures of every single recipe and photos of instructions as well. i wish it also had photos of the ingredients- with the glossary area- but there are plenty of photos of the ingredients pre cooking- to get an idea of what to look for in the korean grocery stores. fabulous! worth the $$ !!!!
Good if you don't know the difference.......2004-07-12
I bought this book in Korea hoping it would help me get started on learning more recipes, but the ingredients are most often unnecessary and in some cases wrong. Take ¹Ì¿ª ¿ÀÀ̳ñ¹ (Cold Seaweed and Cucumber Soup)... She says to put in soy sauce, which is just plain wierd... and doesn't say anything about putting in garlic powder/minced garlic. Instead of soy sauce just put a lot of coarse salt. I am just grateful that I have friends to help me correct the recipes.
As for the comment that there is no Bibimbap, that is just wrong, you can find that on page 160 although many of the ingredients are unnecessary.
I must say that on the whole this book was a big disappointment.

Book Description
In the years between the world wars, a pioneer group of designers, architects, and artists-including Norman Bel Geddes, Donald Deskey, Paul Frankl, Raymond Loewy, Gilbert Rohde, Eliel Saarinen, Walter Dorwin Teague, and Russel Wright-forged a new design aesthetic that was unmistakably American and undeniably modern.
This book, the companion volume to an exhibition organized by the American Federation of Arts and opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, showcases more than 125 of the most influential works by these and other legendary designers. From chairs, dinnerware, and textiles to lamps, cocktail sets, and clocks, these strikingly innovative objects made stylish modern design accessible to a broad audience-and are much sought after by collectors today.
The introductory essay ranges from the role of museums and department stores in promoting modern design to the obsession with streamlining to the origins of planned obsolescence. This extraordinary book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in American design.
170 illustrations, 140 in full color, 9 3/4 x 9 3/4"
J. STEWART JOHNSON, the consultant for design and architecture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of Modern Art, has curated exhibitions on Alvar Aalto, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Marcel Breuer, among many others.

America's own design style........2002-05-26
This is a beautifully designed and printed book based on the exhibition `American Modern' at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The 172 illustrations (142 are large color photos mostly one to a page) focus on objects rather than the wider visual aspects of streamline design such as architecture, transport, engineering. I like the idea of everyday items being used, here you can study, for instance, Lurelle Guild's 1937 Electrolux vacuum cleaner, Norman Bel Geddes' 1940 Patriot radio, Russel Wright's 1937 American Modern dinnerware or the stunning candleholders Wilbert Orme designed in 1938, there are four shown in four separate arrangements and I would really like to have a set!
Author Stewart Johnson explains, in an essay at the start of the book, how a small group of American designers, several of them emigres from Europe, abandoned the ornamentation of Art Deco in favor of simple clean lines, using new materials and manufacturing techniques. Furniture designer Paul Frankl was one of this group and he became an active promoter of the new style. He tied it all down to six characteristics
1 Simplicity.
2 Plain surfaces.
3 Unbroken lines.
4 Accentuation of structural necessity.
5 Dramatisation of the intrinsic beauty of materials.
6 Elimination of meaningless and distracting motives of the past.
Johnson adds one other point that Frankl would not have mentioned at the time: Streamlining. This was the idea that made the style American.
The back of the book has several pages of designer biographies, a useful glossary (Aluminum to Vitrolite and I now know what Monel Metal is) bibliography and index. Joe Coscia Jr, of the Metropolitan's photo studio, should be congratulated on his wonderful photography of the exhibits, they leap right off the page.
As this book only covers objects you might want to read about other areas of Streamline design, have a look at `The Machine Age in America' by Richard Guy Wilson, Dianne Pilgrim and Dickran Tashjian. I think this can be considered the standard work on the subject. Another book that I like is Martin Greif's `Depression Modern: Thirties Style in America', it has some excellent architectural (especially interior) photos that I have not seen in other books. Wonderful book!.......2001-07-07
I saw the exhibition at The Met and this book captures the objects perfectly! It also serves as a great reference to the greatest period in American industrial design: 1925 to 1940.
A COFFEE TABLE BOOK--With CONTENT!.......2000-05-16
This is a great book for anyone interested in or appreciative of modern design and aesthetics. The book itself is beautiful, and all the color reproductions inside are sleek, clean, and inspiring. The author has the works divided by interesting categories such as "Streamlined," "Geometries," and "Penthouse," groupings that really help illuminate different design tendencies during this period. A beautiful publication!

A Must Buy for Ribbon Embroidery Enthusiasts!.......2000-04-28
Whether you already know how to do ribbon embroidery or not, this book is for you. The books starts with the basics from choosing fabrics to setting up your sewing machine to do ribbon embroidery. This is followed by step-by-step, easily understandable instructions on how to do the various stiches. From there, you are shown how to join those stiches to make everything from flowers to bugs and birds and monograms. It finishes with a number of projects that showcase the techniques shown in the book. Best yet, there are brilliant colored photographs throughout the book to show you how ribbon embroidery can be used in any number of ways. They even feature a section on using ribbon embroidery to embellish crazy quilts. I found this book not only helpful, but very inspiring.

If you love the look of ribbon embroidery but want to speed up the process, try creating it by machine. It takes only a straight stitch and no special techniques, so with any sewing machine you can master the chain, lazy daisy, French knot, blanket, and many other stitches, then whip up projects for year-round use: spring dresses, summer hats, an autumn vest, a winter scarf, plus seasonally appropriate wall hangings, pillows, ornaments, note cards, and more. Or, combine any of the three dozen stitches explained in the illustrated stitch guide to design your own embroidered pieces. --Amy Handy

easy to follow instructions.......2000-12-28
This book takes a difficult time consuming art form and makes it seem simple. You can achieve the same delicate look of hand embroidered silk flowers much more quickly and easily using any sewing machine. The step by step instructions are supplemented with color photographs of the author performing each step. This book is excellent for the beginning sewer as well as the most advanced.

This book is really beautiful! Easy for the beginner........1998-10-08
This book is easier to follow than other books on silk ribbon embroidery by machine. The drawings are clear and the projects are nice. I enjoyed using the silk ribbon on the bobbin for reverse work - and it's not hard! Pretty photos help a lot.

A nice overview of the homes of top women interior designers.......2002-08-25
VICTORIA magazine's "Designers in Residence" is a nice overview of the homes of top women interior designers who are based everywhere from several big American cities to Belgium and France and everywhere in between. It's always fascinating to see how interior designers decorate their own homes, instead of those they do for their clients. You get the sense that while their homes represent sanctuary for them--as home rightly should--they also use their homes as design labs, testing this or that fabric or paint finish or furniture placement to see how it might work elsewhere.
The names are ones design mavens will recognize: Sheila Bridges, Rachel Ashwell, Theodora van Runkle (who also did the costumes for several movies, including "Bonnie & Clyde" in 1967), Isabelle de Borchgrave, Charlotte Moss, and more. There is solid, if sometimes unsurprising, information here on aging fabrics, using different decorative and trompe-l'oeil paint techniques, placing pictures on the wall, and so on. The layout of the book is attractive and uncluttered, the focus being solidly on the interiors--as it should be. This would be a nice little addition to the library of any design or interiors fan.
skip this one - buy "designing women" instead.......2001-08-28
okay, i admit it, i am a design book junkie. this book, however, definitely does not do justice to the designers or their homes. in fact, the photos are adequate, not nearly on the same level of sophistication of "designing women" by russell - which is a terrific book on some really terrific interior designers. "designers in residence" mirrors the editorial content of the magazine which produced it - "victoria" - of which i am not a fan. if you want an inside tour of some very talented designers - buy "designing women" instead.
Designers in Residence.......2001-07-04
This book is a great tool for introducing featured designers. It should be send out to their potential clients with their resumes. However, as a design book it lacks on every front. I do not recommend it as book on desing, or even design styles.
Well worth the purchase price.......2001-04-18
A very enjoyable read. I enjoyed being invited into the private homes of designers whose work I've read/seen to see how they live. I found their designs interesting and pleasing. I'd like to see a follow-up volume with other designers, such as Joe Ruggiero, Kevin McCloud, Christopher Lowell, etc.

Beautiful Book with Lovely Photos.......2007-07-22
This is another lovely book by Victoria. It's filled with page after page of beautiful photographs in a range of styles including shabby-chic, vintage flea market, traditional, Victorian, country, European and my favorite, decorating with whites & creams. This is not a how-to book, but a wonderful one to enjoy with a cup of tea, curled up on your favorite chair. You will not find contemporary design in this book. Although I am not partial to bright colors, every designer showcased in this book has a lovely home with warmth and inviting comfort. I would have given this book a 5 star rating if all of the designs were in a soft dreamy color palette. For those of you who enjoy the same, there are 5 designers and plenty of pages filled with lovely photographs, including the queen of shabby chic, Rachel Ashwell.
Victoria Magazine's book on various Designer's Homes.......2007-06-14
When "Victoria Magazine" first came out in the very early 1990's (or late 1980s) , it was the first of it's kind. I just loved it, and subscribed to it until it stopped being marketed. (By the way, this was before magazines such as ROMANTIC HOMES became popular in the late 1990's).
If you are familiar with the typical format of VICTORIA MAGAZINE, then you can envision what this book is like.
The photos are of the highest quality, just like in the magazine.
The format is the same as the magazine, in that there are many WONDERFUL photos, but note that this is NOT a decorating "how-to" book.
I would categorize this book as a lovely coffee table book. A feast for the eyes, especially if you love romantic homes.
However, if you are drawn to the more typical "modern" homes, or the bright colors of the current retro homes, then this book is not for you.
As I said, this book is for those that like "romantic style" homes of the 1990's & early 2000's, (with the more muted colors).
