Polymer Clay Creative Traditions: Techniques and Projects Inspired by the Fine and Decorative Arts.......2007-08-03
This is the perfect and complete polymer clay book. Step by step are so clear and Judy Belcher is a talented and generous clay artist. Must buy.
Right Up There With the Best of Them!.......2007-06-13
This is a wonderfully inspirational polymer clay book, with a fresh approach and new ideas. The photos, diagrams, and written instructions are detailed enough to actually be useful and the projects are enticing enough to make readers want to actually try them, rather than just view the pictures. This is a fine addition to my polymer clay library and a book I'll refer to often.
A real inspiration!!.......2007-04-11
Polymer clay artists are frequently inspired by other art forms
-from fibre and metalwork to painting and sculpture.
Judy shows how to turn inspiration into reality and just how versatile
polymer clay is for this purpose.
Each chapter starts from a material-based art tradition, eg. glass, metal,
wood, and develops the techniques associated with these crafts in concise,
clearly explained projects. Each technique has a gallery of beautiful
examples of both the source artforms, such as exquisite pieces of
wood furniture, and several works in polymer clay inspired by the material
and sometimes combined with it in mixed media objects.
Judy has selected her gallery artists with care -the best work by the best artists-dazzling!
By illustrating high standards of design and execution, she places polymer clay
on an equal footing with older art material traditions and demands that we keep aiming higher.
For me this is the real inspirational effect of a great book.
Well done, Judy Belcher.

"Preschoolers, art teachers, adventurous parents, and most anyone who likes to play in mud, peanut butter, playdough, papier-mache, and similar mediums will be ecstatic over Kohl's book. There are more than 100 recipes for dough, plaster, clay and other modeling mixtures that can be used for just plain fun or serious art."--ALA Booklist. Oldie and Goodie.......2005-04-26
I guess this book has been around since the late 80's, but it's new to me! My kids and I are on #12 of the 30 playdough possibilities. Cinnamon Dough has been my daughter's favorite, while Shampoo Dough is my son's. I like plain old salt/flour playdough with color added. This book has all the recipies you will ever need for doughs, and other squishy modeling compounds. We haven't tried any plaster of Paris projects yet, but we will! I think we will try the one that you do at the beach -- making some kind of sand casting.
So wonderful it's coming out in Spanish too!.......2001-06-27
I have loved this book for a long time - TONS of great activities and kids really love getting squishy. The Peanut Butter Playdough recipe is worth it alone! Now I heard that Bright Ring Publishing is putting this book out in a Bilingual Spanish Edition! I can't wait to use it in the classroom! What a wonderful resource and bold move! Bravo! And thank you from all of my Spanish-speaking students! They will love to see projects in their own language!
Great fun! Who knew there were this many doughs to play with.......2001-06-10
This book is far better organized than some activity books by other authors. Every activity has a symbol in the corner of the page indicating the age range for each project. Additional symbols for cooking, no cooking, air dry, bake dry, edible, caution, and "adult supervision always necessary" are used when applicable. These symbols make it very easy to flip through the book to find a good project for your child(ren). It is especially useful when trying to find projects for children of mixed ages. The layout of the directions is excellent with one project per page, materials clearly listed, mixture process easily explained, and then many optional variations and ideas to further change or expand on the basic project.
Lots of dough's, modeling compounds, homemade beads, plaster and papier mache projects. A section with edible items such as dog biscuits, pie crust, gingerbread and pretzels. At 150 pages you can imagine there is a lot here to keep you busy for a long time. Many of the projects can be made with ingredients most people have on hand at home. Some projects are fast and easy and others are more complex.
I would highly recommend this for every parent, teachers of young children, and even babysitters. This would make a great birthday gift as an alternative to toys, for 2 year-olds and up. I have found this very helpful on days when my children seem bored with our usual daily routine and on rainy days. As a homeschooling mother I have a lot of projects to do with my children, many of which I know are usually done in preschool or kindergarten.
WONDERFUL!
31 playdoughs?.......2000-06-09
Yep, 31 playdough recipes alone in chapter one ... some bake, some air dry, some handmix, some cook on the stove. Where to begin? Anything squishy and clay-like is found in these pages, from plaster of Paris, to papier-mache, to mud, to flour and salt clay, and more. This book is a basic for any home with kids, and that includes grandparents!
Book Description
Kids will happily dig into the soft, malleable medium, exploring its possibilities. They’ll break the clay apart, rejoin it with water, try to model it into recognizable shapes, and cut out great big slabs to design. Pictures of professional sculptures, as well as objects created by kids, fill the book. Children will think it’s playtime—you don’t have to tell them they’re learning, too.

hands-down the best.......2005-05-11
This book is extremely useful for classroom teachers and homeschooling families alike. It slowly and thoroughly works through the progression of skills from first using clay to creating finished sculpture. The chapters include information for teaching the skills, multiple examples of professional artwork that can be studied to view the technique at hand, tons of pictures of student work with the age of the student identified (very helpful for knowing how to set your expectations at a realistic level) and every chapter includes free exploration ideas as well as specific exercises.
Chapters:
Before You Begin
Explorations
Making Sculpture
Sculpting in Relief
Animals
Heads and Faces
Figures
Improving Sculptures
Finishing and Displaying Sculpture
I have taken classes with Cathy Topal; she teaches in the Education department at Smith College, helping prospective teachers learn how to teach art. The care and attention she has taken to laying out the exercises in this book clearly reflect this experience - she can think both like an experienced teacher of art and like a mentor to new teachers. This book is a valuable purchase for any art teacher or homeschool family and can be used with students from age 4 to high school level. It will grow with your child and can be used over and over to explore topics in more depth in subsequent years. I give it my very highest recommendation.

The old classic Mudworks is now available in a bilingual edition... Spanish project on the left page, same English project on the right page. Like a butterfly, mirror image. I imagine this art book of clays and doughs breaking through the barriers of language. Afterall, art is a language we ALL speak. I imagine a Spanish speaking gramma and her little English speaking grandchild making playdough together in the kitchen, each reading their own language recipes. I see kids in bilingual classrooms using the translations to check themselves on their command of whatever language is their second language, I dream of Spanish immersion classes using this book to enhance their learning, I hope for mommies and daddies who are speaking English as a second language using this book to help them get through making clays, doughs, and modeling recipes with their kids. And for ME, I just like seeing if I can use the Spanish recipe and make stuff! (with the English back up)
Easy, 160 pages, no expertise necessary.

Book Description
The gun, like the axe and the plow, was an essential tool in the exploration and settlement of the trans-Mississippi West. It provided food for the cooking pot as well as protection against two- or four-legged marauders. As the century progressed, firearms also provided various forms of recreation for both men and women, primarily target and competition shooting.
Of course the employment of the gun, whether for good or evil, depended upon the user. The men and women who lived the nineteenth-century western experience sometimes described in detail the role firearms played in their lives. Such accounts included a trapper in the 1830s, a woman crossing the plains by wagon in the 1850s, a drover (cowboy in modern terminology) enduring the dangers of a long cattle drive, a professional hunter engaged in the slaughter of the once seemingly endless herds of bison, or a soldier campaigning against American Indians.
Each account adds to our knowledge of firearms and our awareness of the struggle faced by those who were a part of the western experience. Gunsmoke and Saddle Leather describes the gun's impact on the lives of those in the Westmen and women, whites and American Indiansusing their own words to tell that story wherever possible.
The many roles played by guns in the old West with personal accounts by many early settlers and hundreds of photos.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read - A must for fans of the American West !!!!.......2006-09-14
I received a copy of this book while recovering from major surgery and despite its bulk (500 plus pages), I couldn't put it down. I especially enjoyed the photos and detailed coverage of firearms use in frontier life in the 1800s, a topic I've not seen covered so well elsewhere. I also liked the chapters on women as shootist, the presence of foreign-made guns in the west, Indian Guns and frontier use of artillery by civilians and the army. I am not a student of antique firearms but have always been fascinated by the history of the American West. The first person accounts the author used added to my understanding of the topic and made the book even more facinating. This book is a great gift for someone who is a fan of the American West as well as firearms.
Extensive book, lot of information yet not lots of detail.......2006-03-14
I've just started in on reading it but I found the book to have a lot of information about various firearms used in the West, including pre-Civil war days.
It's a big book with several chapters divided between the different types of firearms, the periods in which they were used, and the people who used them.
I especially remember chapters on Buffalo hunting, several on gun brands, and one on the women who used these weapons. Each chapter has several photographs, some of these are period originals and some are of the guns as they are now found in a variety of private and public collections (the photos could stand to be a little larger and clearer to make them easier to examine). There is a very long footnoted bibliography at the back of the book, and much of the text is quoted material from these older (often period) works.
The book is better suited to reading in several sittings, a chapter at a time. I think I'll learn a lot while reading it but I wish there was more information on how the guns were used, not just that this person used that gun or some certain gun was more favored for one thing or another. I remember very little "saddleleather" information, that might be a little bit misleading in the title.

how to teach creativity.......2005-03-28
Of books that teach (or purport to teach) creativity, I like this the best. Using a few simple blocks, and applying a few simple techniques to them, Doreen Speckman opens the door to limitless creativity. Helping us linear souls get the feeling we are, in fact, capable of flights of fancy is liberating.
I could never get my points to match until I read this book!.......1997-11-01
Doreen Speckman has a wonderful sense of humor about making quilts: "How many of us actually need the quilts we make? Ya got central heat?" This sense of fun, combined with her clear explanations and original approach to quilt design, raise "Pattern Play" a cut above most other quilt books. The hints on accurate piecing alone are worth the cost of the book. Beautiful color photos of many of Doreen's quilts make you want to run to the fabric store to start your next project.

Customer Reviews:
Geared to contemporary kitchen lovers.......2007-08-16
I do not often write reviews on books but I was just so disappointed with this one. First off I found the kitchens in this book uninspired and many of them just impractical. For example there are more then a couple kitchens in this book with either no upper cabinets or just 2 or 3. What is that about? I will say that if and only if you are really into super contemporary kitchens, I mean some of them looked like they were out of some futuristic movie, you may be able to justify the pricetag to yourself, otherwise pass this one up.
Pictures for inspiration........2007-05-14
The title is the very reason I wanted the book. As I decorate/design different rooms of my house, I've found that I love to look through pictures to serve as inspiration pieces. My latest venture is a 700 sq. ft. addition, part of which is an eating area. I was able to use Joan Kohn's kitchens to really pull together something to strive for!
not MY kitchen.......2005-11-24
Advice is ok, but the photographed kitchens easily cost $200,000 or more. Not everyone has 25 foot vaulted ceilings with views or $15k Viking stoves.
If your planning on designing a masterpiece and live in Malibu or Manhatten, then this is your book. If your like me, and will end up at Lowes, you may find "Kitchens That Work" by Edic more interesting.
Suitable for modern Asian kitchens too!.......2005-10-13
Good coverage of various aspects in a kitchen that needs to be considered when renovating a new house. Lots of pictures of beautiful kitchens and it applies to modern Asian-style cooking as well.... except the wooden floors used in most of the examples. Wooden timber floors are a no-no to an Asian kitchen. I would recommend this book if you're renovating or remodelling.
The guide to creating your dream kitchen.......2004-10-26
Joan Koh, the hostess/writer/associate producer of "Kitchen Design" and "Bed & Bath Design" evokes a domestic goddess comfort zone, so that the reader wants to step into the cover illustration, sit down at the granite kitchen island/breakfast station with a cup of java and pick Kohn's brain about how we can stop being afraid of having a kitchen that we (a) enjoy being in, (b) enjoy cooking in, (c) don't mind showing the in-laws, and (d) can create without breaking the bank.
Sitting in your own kitchen while reading this book is a great first step to overcoming "kitchen anxiety". Whether Kohn guides you through the various stages with checklists galore, questions to ask yourself (do you want a kitchen for show, or will you cook Thanksgiving dinner? Do you want the kids to feel welcome?), and over 230 stunning photos of real-life kitchens, as well as the inside scoop from designers, architects and decorators. Yes, you can have a good relationship with your contractor!
In part one, Kohn gives the overall broad picture, the blueprint if you will, with seven chapters on design essentials: vision (first and foremost), essential kitchen design elements, working with what you have, budget, ideas, style, and the design team. In part two, she delves into your vital tools: the function, the raw space, your floor plan, your personal style, and your personality.
Kohn's inviting photographs, easy to understand user-friendly format, and expertise take the nightmare out of creating the recipe for your dream kitchen.
