Writing for children is serious work. Thankfully, there are writers up to the task. In these essays, which originated as Children's Literature New England talks, "notable writers for children consider how literature, memory, and moral passion serve the writer." Gillian Cross (The Great American Elephant Chase) uses the story of Jack and the Beanstalk to explore the import--for author, reader, and sometimes protagonist--of entering a fictional world. Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) illuminates a current running through his books having to do with survival. "How do children survive under the best conditions with loving parents," he wonders, "or worse, with unloving parents--how do kids make out?" Susan Cooper (The Grey King) explores our motives for reading, as children and as adults. "More often than not," she determines, "[the child] is on a voyage of discovery, seeking out new worlds. Not us; we tend to look for the familiar." And Pat O'Shea (The Hounds of the Morrigan) tells us what children get from books. "As children read," she says, "they learn about the dangers of the world, but ultimately in a safe and strengthening way, a way that tells them that weak and vulnerable as they may be... they and their own lives are of value, have importance, that they make a difference to the world and to the life around them." Other contributors include Ursula K. Le Guin, Gregory Maguire, Sarah Ellis, and Madeleine L'Engle. --Jane Steinberg

Book Description

In Origins of Story, notable writers for children consider how literature, memory, and moral passion serve the writers. Among the seventeen authors represented here are Tom Feelings, Ursula K. Le Guin, Maurice Sendak, Susan Cooper, Sarah Ellis, Katherine Paterson, Jill Paton Walsh, and Virginia Hamilton. These contributing authors reach beyond themselves and their work to discuss vitally important subjects such as home and homelessness, violence and nonviolence, and the nature of heroism. Implicit in their essays is the realization that we have much to learn from literature that mirrors the lives of children.

Story is as new for children as experience itself. And when children's writers are wise, they anticipate the freshness of their audience and reserve for children the choicest of material -- what Walter de la Mare called "the rarest kind of best."

Under the sponsorship of Children's Literature New England (CLNE), a nonprofit educational organization founded in 1987, individuals have met annually on university campuses on both sides of the Atlantic to discuss books and their insight into children's lives. The essays in Origins of Story represent some of the themes of the annual programs. This collection is a treasure trove, an affirmation of the vital connection between children's books and the imagination.

5 out of 5 stars So many authors in one place!.......2001-07-15

If you are interested in reading many successful authors' thoughts on the power of story and reading, this book is a must. The essays in this collection are inspiring, diverse, and unified in their passion for writing and storytelling. I found myself returning to passages over and over, savoring the passions for children's literature that are similar to my own. A stellar collection of authors are presented including Susan Cooper, Madeleine L'Engle, Maurice Sendak and many more that appear on most required reading lists. (They are listed entirely in the professional reviews above.) This is a great book for librarians, teachers, students, and anyone who loves one or all of the many authors represented.

4 out of 5 stars Only Grade A Beef.......2002-03-21

Unlike many coffee table books on pop culture phenomena, The American Drive-in Restaurant supplements its generous use of photos with material from regional archives and 1950s restaurant trade industry journals, resulting in a pop history with a strong seasoning of well-researched facts. Interviews with former carhops also provide an interesting slice of life effect.

Witzel's copywriting background intrudes most in the brief portraits of major drive-in chains, which read like corporate marketing pieces. The serious researcher needs to handle this book with care: not only are there numerous typesetting errors (including mislabeled dates and places), but some corporate biography facts don't match those presented by the same corporations' official Web sites (though it wouldn't be surprising if the corporations were the ones who had it wrong).

All in all, a good read packed with interesting material.

Once upon a time in the United States, before the ubiquitous yellow arches of a certain hamburger chain spread like chicken pox, eating on the go was an occasion. Those long-gone days when customer service was number one--and meals were dished up by enthusiastic young women costumed to resemble drum majorettes--are captured in this compilation of vintage photographs and memorabilia, crammed to overflowing with nostalgia.

Book Description

Travel back to the heyday of the American drive-in restaurant --complete with swinging ponytails, shiny new automobiles, and the aroma of French fries drifting through unrolled car windows. Beginning with the original Texas Pig Stand of 1921, this evocative compendium cruises through 40 years of drive in culture, tracing the history of roadside restaurant architecture and the people who created it. Engagingly illustrated with historical photographs and a rich assortment of related ?ephemera, from menus to matchbox covers, Car Hops and Curb Service chronicles a unique chapter of popular culture for anyone who sipped a malt, hung a tray, or cruised a drive in parking lot -- or wished they had.

4 out of 5 stars Drive Inns.......2007-01-23

Talk about filled with information-this book has all of the pictures and the details behind the car hops. I thought the uniqueness behind the Tam O Shanter was cool. Also, the celebrities that went to the drive inns and what they ordered. The book explains some of the history behind the word "car hop." Just a fun, light read!!! Highly recommended for those people who remember going to the A&W or other drive inn, especially in California.

5 out of 5 stars 20th Century American Culture.......2006-07-28

A wonderfully nostalgic look at pop culture of the 20th century, this is as much a social history book of the 1930's through the early 1970's as it is a history of Drive In restaurants. Jammed pack in this 187 page "psuedo tome" is the history of fast food and how it evolved into what it's become today, as well as teen culture of the era, and how the automobile turned America into a mobile society and society's response.
Car hops (sometimes on roller skates), neon signs, original menus, advertisements...the author gives the reader the sense of being there, back in the 1940's, 50's, or 60's, cruising along in your car to the local hang out, and there were plenty throughout our great country: Sal's Hotdog Heaven, Blackie's Drive In, Pig Stand, Steak and Shake, Igloo, Chicken In The Rough, The Varsity, and so many more.
Mr. Witzel also gives us the histories of the many well-known fast food restaurants still in existance today, all who had their beginnings as Drive Ins: A & W, McDonalds, Bob's Big Boy, White Castle, and even the infamous Mel's Drive in from American Grafitti.
The photographs alone are worth the money, and there are hundreds of pictures throughout.
I guess if I had one complaint it would be that every time I look at this book I end up dragging the family out to our local drive in (Eddy's Drive In located in Harrison Township, Michigan - girls on roller skates, classic cars, and all!).

5 out of 5 stars Great nostalgia trip.......2004-04-07

This book blends words and photography to take readers back to more relaxed days of the early to late 20th Century. The pictures alone are worth the price. It is apparent how much time, research, and effort Michael Karl Witzel contributed into the making of this book. I highly recommend it- especially for baby boomers and older, or someone who just wishes to visit a regrettably lost era of American history.

In hardcover REMODEL was titled HOUSE TRANSFORMED: this paperback edition represents the fourth in a series of books produced in conjunction with the American Institute of Architects and Taunton, and provides homeowners with over two hundred color photos to accompany seven basic tips on successfully remodeling, from understanding regional and property site pros and cons to designing with compatibility and safety in mind, and budgeting. From lifestyle assessments to picking the optimum remodel plans, REMODEL is for any who would undertake a project, and selects 18 houses across the country that have been remodeled by America's leading residential architects.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough information.......2007-03-16

While this book does provide a glimpse of many remodeling projects in different corners of the country, I was hoping for more detail than the small amount of copy and tiny floorplans offered. The book did do a nice job of zooming in on some key features that the designers had added, but at the expense of detailed descriptions of the projects.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Recipes, but just a bit less than Pepin and Richard.......2007-09-10

`A Great American Cook' by the `legendary' chef and restaurateur, Jonathan Waxman has been long awaited, at least by me, for about as long as I have been familiar with cookery books and more specifically the background of celebrity chef, Bobby Flay, who provides a blurb on the well-known fact that Waxman was `My number one mentor'. I call Waxman `legendary' because he comes from that pre-Emeril, pre-Food Network, pre-celebrity chef era of a scant 20 years ago, when the only chef one ever heard of was Wolfgang Puck, and the great culinary writer and editor, Ruth Reichl was predicting the end of celebrity chefs. Well, we all make mistakes! He is also `legendary' in that all the other members of this pre-Emeril club have produced at one or more important cookbooks. Wolfgang has numerous pedestrian efforts, and contemporary Jeremiah Tower (another Chez Panisse graduate) has produced at least two, one of which I consider one of the best chef cookbooks going.
Therefore, my expectations for Waxman's book were very, very high, as I would compare him to the best books from Tower, Zuni Café founder, Judy Rodgers, fellow Chez Panisse alum, Paul Bertoli, and especially the recent excellent works by Jacques Pepin (Chez Pepin) and Michel Richard (Happy in the Kitchen). It is most appropriate to compare it to `Chez Pepin' as both are written from the point of view of recipes the cooks make at home. At least that's what both of them say, and Jacques has a much easier time of sticking to that principle, as he has not headed a professional kitchen for many decades. When I opened Richard's and Pepin's books, I could tell this was something special almost immediately, as I can do with virtually all exceptional cookbooks. These excellent books simply don't mince words and get right down to talking about both facts and inspirations we have simply never seen elsewhere. I did not get that impression on reading through Waxman's 12 introductory pages, or even when I started reading the recipes. Virtually all the tips in `Edicts on Selecting Ingredients and Techniques' was old stuff we have all read in virtually every better cookbook written in the last 20 years.
But then, by the time I got to the third chapter, I started to appreciate two things about the recipes. First, although some originated in one of Waxman's commercial kitchens, virtually all of the recipes were relatively simple. Maybe not as simple as Jacques (who seems to be the master of effortless home cooking), but simple AND special, nonetheless. Second, I noticed that there were virtually no fancy ingredients being used, unless you count Waxman's strictures about not using frozen seafood, especially squid, for the recipes. Instead, Waxman draws from a relatively simple palate, where lots of popular ingredients find their way into many different recipes. The obvious ones are sweet peppers, asparagus, tuna, onion, tomatoes, mushrooms, corn, and shellfish. If one is a fan of any of these ingredients, then Waxman's book is a must, as he gives you enough to keep you happy for several seasons.
One can also see what it is about Waxman's style which may have had a big influence on Flay. While Waxman's primary influences were the California pantry and French cooking techniques, seen through the eyes of Alice Waters, he is clearly in love with southwestern ingredients and cooking styles. And yet, there is very little real grilling going on here. And, if you were adverse to southwestern cuisine, you would probably find these recipes may even change your mind.
Waxman's recipe writing style is very easy on the eyes and the mind (easy to follow, without being overly pedagogical). As dearly as I love Julia Child's recipes, Waxman's writing is far more fun to read and to execute for the experienced chef. He doesn't leave anything out. You will even find his imagery illuminating, as when he tells you to open a slit in a cooked chicken breast as if you were squeezing open a slit baked potato. Similarly, when he tells you how to prepare the perfect roast chicken, the instructions are far simpler than Jeremiah Tower's similar recipe. Finally, while the layout of the procedures is not overly fussy, it is very nicely organized with simple typesetting to distinguish one part of the recipe from another.
This book is worthy for any experienced cook who is not always pressed for time, and while just a bit light on the insights, it's a worthy book for those especially fond of the best chef's books cited above.

                  Book Description

Paderewski at Paso Robles: A Great Pianist's Home Away From Home in California. Overland Books, 2004. Cover and text designed by 1106 Design, Phoenix, Arizona. 96 pp with 20 black and white illustrations.

Paderewski at Paso Robles is the story of a twenty-five-year-long love affair between a great man and a little town in central California.

The Polish pianist, composer, and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941) was an international celebrity of already legendary proportions when he came to Paso Robles in 1914, seeking relief from the debilitating neuritis that had forced him to suspend his latest American concert tour. Paderewski found a "cure" in the mud baths and sulphur springs of Paso Robles, but not before he began to buy up large tracts of land west of the town.

Between his wildly popular concert tours of Europe and America, and his epochal service as premier of Poland at the end of World War I, Paderewski sojourned regularly at Paso Robles, which became his American home away from home. His Paso Robles properties eventually included 2,864 acres, on which he grew almonds and choice wine grapes. He never built a house in the town, however, preferring to make his headquarters in the grand old Paso Robles Hot Springs Hotel, built between 1889 and 1891.

Paderewski was planning a return to Paso Robles when the Hot Springs Hotel burned to the ground in December 1940 (its site is now occupied by the Paso Robles Inn), and he died six months later in New York. But the people of the town never forgot him--nor did the music lovers, wine enthusiasts, and Polish and American patriots who remembered his enduring contributions to music, wine, and international friendship.
