2 out of 5 stars Not what it seems........2000-08-02

This book is actually a 31 page pamphlet rather than a paperback book. The information on making mustard is woefully short, the bulk of the book being rather pedestrian recipes for using mustard.

The recipies remind me of the ones on that back of store packages. Most of them seem to have mustard included simply so the recipies can be included in this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An End To My Confusion.......2004-11-29

I have solved many mysteries of Depression Era Glass patterns on unmarked pieces through the use of this wonderful, well documented guide. Although this guide presents a small insert of colored pictures the bulk of the pages provide "drawings" in black and white which are actually quite helpful in determining the pattern you are matching. In addition, pattern names, manufacturers and years of manufacturing are provided.

As a dealer I find the value guides helpful and they are separated by item category, color and value range. The author is honest enough in the introduction to advise you to depend on other references for value accuracy in the ever changing market, particularly with the advent of internet auctions. This book has been extremely helpful as a reference guide and is a welcome addition to my glassware book library.

4 out of 5 stars Values are clear, need more examples........2004-02-24

I found that the values were very helpful, but since mostly all that was shown pattern-wise was the plate, it was a bit difficult for me to identify some other pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book for Identification.......2003-11-05

As a new collector of depression era glass, I found this book to be incredibly helpful with identification. The line drawings are clear - the reader has no doubt of the pattern (sometimes photos can be unclear due to the nature of glass). I also appreciate the value ranges given and, of special value to me, each pattern has info on what pieces have been reproduced or reissued.

5 out of 5 stars A variety of patterns from the era in unmistakable relief.......2002-06-06

Now in an expanded and fully updated fourth edition, Depression Era Glassware Identification And Value Guide, glassware specialist Carl F. Luckey is a straightforward guide enabling the reader to competently and confidently recognize and fairly price classic works of 1930s glassware artifacts. While most of the glassware illustrations are in simple black and white, Depression Era Glassware is impressively enhanced with an insert section of superb color photography, all combine to present a variety of patterns from the era in unmistakable relief. The price guide is extensive and lists price ranges for individual pieces of varying sizes. Depression Era Glassware is an excellent, indispensable, authoritative resource for dealers and collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Line drawings to end my confusion........2000-08-14

I have many other books that show depression glass and all of them are great. But this book shows the patterns in line drawings. Sometimes pictures of glass patterns are not as clear as they could be. This book shows a drawing of each pattern and lets you really study it. I found it very helpful in sorting out the initial confusion that new comers sometimes have. Now that I am an 'old pro', I still find myself using this book just to be on the 'safe' side.

The shipment arrived very very fast, the book stinks but that is not the shippers problem.

5 out of 5 stars This book has already paid for its self........2005-03-08

This book is a little large to be carrying around, however I still do carry it to places that I already know will have the pattern I am looking for.
The forward describes "Elegant" glassware as handmade and acid etched glassware that was sold by department and jewelry stores during the Depression era through the 1950's, differentiating it from the dime store and giveaway glass that has become known as Depression glass. The word "Elegant" has become "official" nomenclature among today's dealers for designating handmade glass.
It is well organized with the glass patterns in alphabetical order and the prices in columns by color of glass. Most of the pictures are color and have good enough definition to identify what you are looking at. There are a contents by pattern and a contents by company.

Book Description

The Florences have compiled this second volume to once again help identify the candlestick patterns made from the Depression era to modern day. With no repeated shots from the authors first volume, more than 500 different candlesticks are shown in full color, dozens never before seen in any other book. For simplicity of use this book is arranged according to color: amber, black, blue, crystal, green, iridescent, multicolor, pink, purple, red, smoke, white, and yellow. Many famous glassmakers are represented, such as Heisey, Indiana, Cambridge, Fostoria, Westmoreland, and Tiffin. The descriptive text for each candleholder includes pattern, maker, color, height, and current collector value. A helpful index and bibliography are also provided.

5 out of 5 stars A pick any owner of Volume 1 needs.......2006-08-06

Gene & Cathy Florence's Glass Candlesticks Of The Depression Era, Volume 2: Identification And Value provides a secondary volume of addition candles collected since the author's first volume, presenting the same easy organization by maker and the fine color photos which lend to quick identification. From patterns and color notes to sizes and valuation, Glass Candlesticks, Volume 2 is a pick any owner of Volume 1 needs.

3 out of 5 stars Glass Candlesticks.......2001-11-05

Very beautiful pictures, but limited. Wish Florence has used a different format instead of listing by color. It would have been helpful if he had stated the colors and etchings available for each candlestick.

4 out of 5 stars Candlesticks.......2000-06-08

This book is a very colorful and well written book. However, I expected to see many more pictures of candlesticks than are offered in this book. There is 165 pages of candlesticks with 2 - 3 examples per page, which is probably around the amount made during the Depression Era. Florence gives the company name, the pattern, color, size and mint value. The photos are great and I believe this book is valuable to those just getting into collecting candlesticks from this era.

gene florence , any of his books are concise and show the items in a clear picture . he presents the items along with the current prices . all of genes books as is this one , are lovely to look at and very informative, giving a lot of joy.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2002-08-18

Orginally purchased for my mother, I purchased it also after looking through it. The original reason for the book was to attempt to id some etched glass, the glass was not in the book, but it was worth it anyway. Beautiful photos, good writing, I saw pieces I had not known exsited. Who knew that such elegant depression glass was out there! I would not recommend it for the "flea market" or "yard sale" groupie, one of his Collectors Encyclopedias may work better, but it is still a very nice book and well worth it if you collect or deal in higher end depression glass.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to inform and direct you !.......2002-04-05

This is another fave of mine from Gene Florence! He sure knows what he is writing about!!!This book is loaded with color photos of many different types of depression glass.I never realized how many patterns, and companies, there were out there!!!He also is very thorough about listing what pieces were in what colors and the values for each color.
Overall a fantastic book!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2001-08-11

I have a number of collector books, including Elegant Glassware of the Depression Era : Identification and Value Guide (8th Ed)by Gene Florence. Gene Florence books are my favorite by far. This book is very well formatted. It is loaded with clear pictures that are helpful in pattern identification, informative text, and has easy-to-use pricing guides. The book indexes the glassware by pattern name and by manufacturer.

Whether you are a novice collector or "expert", I am sure you will find this book to be very helpful. Gene Florence's down-to-earth presentation of glassware is refreshing and practical!

1 out of 5 stars Why is this book being reprinted?.......2007-03-20

I bought this book expecting to set up a homemade gun bluing operation in my home and was disappointed.

The chemical formulari were archaic and unusable (most of the chemical names used went out of vogue 50-60 years ago).

The book does not include plans to build bluing tanks of drying rooms; book only offers a brief description.

It left me, "the advanced do it yourselfer" lacking and I do not undertand why so many people rave about this book.

I do not think it should have been reprinted.

It did not help me at all

3 out of 5 stars 'Must read' for the gun enthusiast........2007-01-25

Good information on many recipes for do it yourself blueing and browning that is hard to find.

2 out of 5 stars Old and out of date.......2005-09-21

The print is very small for older eyes and the book was written many years ago. The blueing and browning techniques of today are far easier and simpler to use.
I would not recomend this book for reblueing modern firearms.

4 out of 5 stars Good info for home blueing.......2001-12-11

Very good info but very technical. This is more of a cookbook then a novel. It does explain everything including measurments and chemical names but is very dry reading. Please keep in mind that this title is 90 years old and the style reflects it. The fact that it is still around after so many years tells all you really need to know in regard to it's value as a reference.

              Book Description

Design a bedroom that's just made for sweet dreaming and relaxation! Whether it's your own personal retreat; the master suite; a comfy nursery; teen hideout, or guest room, here's how to make it great. Take advantage of fabrics applications; focus on unexpected pleasures that delight the eye (like a grouping of antique frames); and express your individual taste, from airily romantic to richly dramatic. You'll even learn tricks for transforming unusually shaped spaces--like sloping attic bedrooms-into something special!

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2007-04-20

I am reading through this book, and find it relaxing, cozy, and inspiring.
It includes many full-page, color photos, and descriptions to inspire. I love the antique accents and creamy colors that dot many of the rooms. There is even a bed frame made from twigs! One chapter extols hospitality, with examples on how to make your guests feel welcome, another chapter explores children's rooms. It's fun to look through and read, and I'm sure I will revisit it in the future.

              4 out of 5 stars retreat.......2000-08-31

This book was truly very inspiring in the art of bedroom decoration. The whole concept of the book is to teach one how to design his/her own bedroom into more than just a sleeping area. It allows ideas to come forth in creating a true retreat, a place of refuge, a place to re-energize, a place for the perfect dream...

The ideas in the book do not stop just at the bed decoration, but also that of the entire room. From furniture to fabric to even the scent. A complete guide in creating the perfect warm bedroom aura in the romantic sense.
