    Book Description

Gottlieb Biedermeier, a teasing middle-class papa best known for his appearances in a Munich satirical weekly, came to fame in the 1840s. A "god-loving everyman," he represented the typical German citizen, more interested in a comfortable home and a convivial family than political activism. The poets who created him, needling the bourgeoisie and signing their own work "Biedermeier," weren't thinking about the elegant housewares that now bear their pseudonym, varied by a letter. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, their alter ego had retroactively given his name to the aesthetics and philosophies of the period his attitudes suited so well, from 1815 to 1835. Biedermeier arts and crafts were orderly, frugal and simplistic. They tended to pare forms to their essentials, merging the useful with the beautiful. Eighteenth-century gilding and frills were stripped away in favor of the natural beauty of materials and shapes. What began as an intellectual critique soon developed into a new model for living. Biedermeier examines Biedermeier painting, furniture and decorative arts as a style and a cultural attitude. Visual arts of the period, which are still largely unstudied as distinct from Romanticism or the Nazarenes, are highlighted here in the work of Georg Friedrich Kersting and Eduard Gaertner. With nearly 300 outstanding examples of German, Austrian and Czechoslovakian paintings, furniture, related decorative arts and works on paper, this is a superb document of the innovative character of the period and its importance as a precursor to modernism.

    Book Description

Biedermeier furniture and interior design are recognized today as the first great flowering of haute bourgeois taste in interior design. Biedermeier is a style with great range, from austere to sumptuous, but it is never ostentatious in its celebration of comfort, domestic intimacy, and practicality. Beginning in the early nineteenth century, these bourgeois ideals in design were pursued by a wide range of society from the Hapsburgs and Hohenzollern to the middle class, from Middle Europe to Italy, yet Biedermeier's innate classicism, its lyrical yet elegant forms, have made it an influential inspiration in our own time. The World of Biedermeier celebrates the elements of a wonderfully appealing style—the furniture, decorative elements, paintings, crystal, porcelain, fabrics—as no other recent book on furniture and design. Created out of an enraptured obsession with Biedermeier—shared by Karl Kemp, the renowned antiques dealer, and Linda Chase, the noted interior designer and writer—this book is an extraordinary paean to an irresistible style. The hundreds of brilliant color photographs by Lois Lammerhuber set a new standard for design and furniture photography, and the book has been opulently designed and produced. To experience the story of Biedermeier, we explore enchanting castles, royal residences, a Roman-inspired bathhouse, museum attics, and storage annexes in Vienna, Berlin, and elsewhere. Lammerhuber was the first photographer granted free access to the extraordinary holdings of the Hofmobiliendepot, the Imperial Furniture Collection in Vienna. Here too are the treasures of the Hofburg Silberkammer museum, plus features on the work of the great Biedermeier designers Joseph Danhauser and Karl Friedrich Schinkel. A chapter on current uses of Biedermeier illustrates the timeless quality of this style, from full traditional settings to the way that Biedermeier furniture looks fresh and alive in contemporary settings. An illustrated reference section will prove an indispensable guide to anyone interested in this rich homage to Middle European culture. 200 color illustrations.

      Book Description

This book examines the impact of the daily life, political climate, and artistic institutions of Vienna on its musicians and musical tastes between 1815 and 1830. Emphasis is given to Beethoven, Schubert, Paganini, and Johann Strauss where their careers reflect typically Viennese musical life and when Viennese conventions may explain important turns in their lives. An entire chapter is devoted to the regulation of music by the Austrian government, secret police, and censors. Schubert’s near-arrest for his association with radical students and the dispersal of the Ludlamsh6hle artistic group for suspected revolutionary tendencies are two examples of police intervention into artists’ lives, suggesting that political considerations may have had a bearing on the choice of works to be performed or published and on which artists received the support of the state. Succeeding chapters discuss the conventions of Vienna’s musical institutions: the theatre, public concerts, salons, the church and the military, as well as popular music (dance hall, tavern).

        Book Description

After many years of undeserved neglect, Biedermeier furniture, painting, textiles, and decorative arts are enjoying renewed popularity. The Biedermeier era (1815—48) was a period of tranquility following the devastation of the Napoleonic Wars and a fertile time for the design and production of household furniture and accessories. The furniture of the Biedermeier period is characterized by architectural simplicity and the use of light-colored fruitwoods offset by contrasting bands of ebony and maple inlay. It is this timeless sophistication that has once again brought Biedermeier to the attention of collectors and designers around the world.

Biedermeier, with its newly revised introduction, serves as an unrivaled sourcebook for the furniture and décor of this period. Angus Wilkie traces the era's complex history, giving a broad cultural and social background to the work itself. Providing an overview of the astonishing variety of furniture produced by local cabinetmakers from Germany to Scandinavia, this text showcases candlesticks, secretaries, and spittoons crafted in rich fruitwoods and decorated with inlays and sunburst veneers. With the aid of photographs of actual pieces and previously unpublished drawings, the regional designs are compared to one another, giving a rare view of the world of the nineteenth-century craftsman and of the design philosophy underlying the elegant aesthetics of the Biedermeier style. Wilkie's pioneering research is accompanied by over 160 specially commissioned color photographs, as well as watercolors of Biedermeier interiors, sketches, original textile designs, and original drawings of furniture and draperies reproduced from the Imperial Archives in Vienna. With its display of entire rooms as well as individual pieces, Biedermeier has garnered a wide audience among decorators, homeowners, collectors, dealers, and historians.

              5 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS needlepoint resource!.......2002-02-22

I bought this book in order to make a truly unique seat cover for a vintage chair. The photos are great, the charts easy to follow and there is even a list of colors needed in both wool and DMC floss, depending on your preference. The results were fabulous. And this is only the second needlepoint project I've done in my life. I've bought a second book by Ms. Serena called Berlin Work and I'm looking forward to a third with Animal designs. If you're looking for some truly historical designs, this is the book for you. If you can find my website, there are pictures of my chair there. m. LAIUPPA

              5 out of 5 stars A must-have source of original needlework designs.......1999-07-15

This book is the best source I have found for original designs. Anyone looking for extremely detailed and diverse designs would enjoy this book. Most of the designs could be used directly from the photos of the charts. This book is magnificent! Truly different than any other needlepoint book I have seen, well worth purchasing. There is enough material to last a lifetime of stiching!

5 out of 5 stars The finest collection of patterns and examples available........1999-02-17

This is the finest collection of charted historical embroidery patterns I have ever encountered. The illustration articles and patterns are of exceptional quality and extremely well reproduced - many of the original painted patterns appear in a size one can work from as easily as the selection of black and white patterns produced for the book. We can only hope that Raffaella Serena will produce more works of this calibre.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on classical needlework designs.......1998-10-20

The book displays part of the unique collection world-wide of classical needlepoint designs of the Biedermeier period (early 19th century). The editor is a professional researcher and well-known for her "beautiful" publications. The exquisite colour charts in this book, representing flowers, landscapes, borders etc. were hand-painted by specialized artists, similar to early Victorian needlework designs. In addition to 37 black & white embroidery designs, also pictured in colour, most of the excellent illustrations could serve, if magnified, as colour patterns for embroiderers. The almost 200 colour pictures are delightful for anyone interested in needlework, either for just looking or for using the designs for petit point, gros point or cross-stitches. It is one of the "richest" books for classical designs I have seen, including American and English publications.

                Book Description

Looking at a broad spectrum of writers--English, French, German, Italian, Russian and other East Europeans--Virgil Nemoianu offers here a coherent characterization of the period 1815-1848. This he calls the era of the domestication of romanticism.

The explosive, visionary core of romanticism is seen to give way--after the defeat of Napoleon--to an expanded and softer version reflecting middle-class values. This later form of romanticism is characterized by moralizing efforts to reform society, a sentimental yearning for the tranquility of home and hearth, and persistent faith in the individual, alongside a new skepticism, shattered ideals, and consequent irony. Expanding the application of the term Biedermeier, which has been useful in describing this period in German literature, Nemoianu provides a new framework for understanding these years in a wider European context.

                    Book Description

With almost 200,000 copies sold, The Color Book has proven itself the must-have color manual for the home decorator. Now completely revised and updated, and featuring all-new colors in fresh and contemporary palettes, this new edition invigorates the best-selling classic. Professional designers and decorators know what effect a change in color will have, but for many of us, choosing paint still feels like a bit of a gamble. We may love that deep rose color on the paint chip, but what will it actually look like on the wall, against oak flooring and a cream ceiling? With The New Color Book, anyone can instantly see what colors will work, and what colors won't. Ninety-six pages, each cut horizontally into three sections -- floor, walls, and ceiling -- can be flipped separately to instantly mix-and-match a vast array of colors. Covering the bathroom, bedroom, living room, and kitchen, The New Color Book visually demonstrates 45,000 different color combinations, offering near endless inspiration and tangible assistance in selecting the perfect color scheme for every room. The accompanying text presents an accessible guide to choosing and mixing colors, while a color key and practical directory offer additional resources. Decorators will like using the unique mix-and-match method to help clients make smart choices, while the do-it-yourself crowd can use it to identify the best color combinations for every room, without resorting to the expense and frustration of trial and error.

                    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting to flip through, but not very useful.......2007-03-09

This is a fun book. Kind of like the flip books where you make funny cartoon characters. But this is colors for walls, ceilings, and floors.
It's neat to see how different a room (same furniture) looks with pink walls and yellow ceiling as opposed to blue walls, green ceiling.

But while it's kind of neat to play with, I don't see how it is very useful. There are sections for living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. Each section has two different rooms - one more country-style decorated, the other a little more modern.

The furniture pieces in the living rooms and bedrooms are very neutral. Both bedrooms and both living rooms however feature light colored furniture, I would have prefered one option to show darker woods since that is mainly what I have in my house.

The floor color choices are not that great either. Not enough neutrals for the floor choices, since most people would be working with what they already have on the floor, and using this mainly to choose a wall color.

One of the bathrooms features a grayish-green counter and tilework. One kitchen has white cabinets, one kitchen has yellow cabinets. Those colors really affect how you see the other colors in the room. Great if you have that color already in your house and are trying to work around it, but not so great if you are trying to actually choose colors for your house.

So if you can get a used copy for not much, it is fun to look through. Not worth full price, unless you have a houseful of very light colored furniture or are completely starting from scratch.

                    1 out of 5 stars Not Wha I Expected.......2005-09-19

This book may be good for looking at changing your paint color, but was not helpful in picking out a new color pallet for a newly constructed home.

5 out of 5 stars How color affects space and existing conditions!.......2005-05-14

I love how this book shows how different colors can change a layout without having to change major items (i.e. your furniture). They say paint is the cheapest way to change a room and this book shows how. It definantely pays for itself, trust me. I had a darker colored room and flipped through this book and saw all the possibilities for making it a warmer more spacious place. I chose an orange-peach color (close to one of the colors I saw in the book) and I got a whole new room! It feels much more like home. I'm so glad I found this book, otherwise I may have never been bold enough to paint it that color. Excellent buy, well worth the price, it's a steal!!!

                    1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2005-03-01

I really expected more versatility out of this book with the title. I suggest reviewing it in person before purchase, to see if this is what you're looking for. The color combinations I found to be very muted.
