Whether Montessori or Merlot, kindergarten or Cabernet, the importance of a good instructor during the formative years is crucial. That's why newcomers to the world of wine could do a lot worse than having a corkscrew in one hand and a copy of Jancis Robinson's How to Taste in the other. A revision of 1983's Masterglass and published in the U.K. under the superior title Jancis Robinson's Wine-Tasting Workbook, How to Taste is a primer by a certified Master of Wine and star of the PBS series Jancis Robinson's Wine Course. From acidity to Australian Shiraz, oak to Oregon Pinot, Robinson delivers chapters of information and theory, intermingled with shaded "Practice" exercises, presented in a style as off-dry as one of the author's beloved Rieslings (the tannin in a lesser vintage Barolo is "like sucking on a matchstick"). Sometimes tuition at Jancis U. runs high: the lesson on sugar/acid balance culminates with expensive Sauterne "Practice." And even if Robinson risks, by dropping words like "charred" and "umami" early in the book, sending novices back to tear open a fresh box of Franzia, vinous virgins are encouraged to stick with it. By the time they get to the glossary at book's end, they'll be identifying wines at blind tastings with professional accuracy--which, Robinson encouragingly reveals, and she ought to know, is about 50 percent. --Tony Mason

Book Description

Hailed by Paul Levy in The Wall Street Journal as "our cleverest, most thoughtful wine writer," Jancis Robinson makes learning about wine almost as enjoyable as drinking it. With How to Taste, she's put together a unique wine-tasting course based on practical exercises that appeal to wine connoisseurs of all levels.

Robinson explains first how we taste wine and food, and then about the grapes and wines themselves. In separate sections on theory and practice, she offers basic technical information about wine appreciation, then shows us how to apply it in sipping exercises -- all of which are based on readily available and, in most cases, inexpensive bottles. And how better to learn about wine than by actually drinking it?

By the time you finish this book, you'll know how to recognize the most popular grape varieties from Chardonnay to Riesling, to Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, and why you should choose a good sparkling wine over a cheap champagne. You will know how to judge sweetness, acidity, and fruitiness as well as the difference between the length and weight of a wine, and you will be able to distinguish wines from around the world. Robinson also arms you with practical advice about dealing with wine in the real world: choosing from a wine list; setting up and recording your own wine tastings; spitting out your sample mouthful correctly; and complementing food flavors with wine.

Innovative, informative, and above all fun, How to Taste is designed to be taken with you everywhere, from the armchair to the vineyard to the wine shop and back to the table.

5 out of 5 stars Throw A Wine Tasting Party.......2007-05-14

Janice Robinson's books are wine gospels. This book is for anyone who wants to taste and enjoy more wine. Don't be intimidated. She is not a wine snob and writes her books for everyone. I threw a wine party after reading this book and passed along some of my new knowledge with my friends. I feel much more confident giving wine as a host/hostess gift now.

4 out of 5 stars Greg's Review!!!.......2007-01-04

I am using the book as a reference guide because I am already reasonably proficient in tasting wine, however from what I have read so far it is very informative and an excellent learning medium for the novice and the experienced wine taster alike.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing quite like it.......2006-11-10

There are dozens upon dozens of reference books that explain wine in very technical terms. The Oxford Companion to wine has in depth entries on everything from the making of sparkling wines to polyphenols such as resveratrol. The World Atlas of Wine contains remarkable maps and explanations of all of the mapped regions. These are, of course, essential to anyone wanting to learn about wine.

But this transcends all reference guides. This book tells you how to truly enjoy this enchanting beverage *and* teaches you about wine along the way.

If you go through this book, and not only read but actually work with the practical tastings, you can not help but come out of it comfortable enough in your own understanding and convictions to "rap" with experienced oenophiles.

4 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Tasting.......2004-10-05

I bought the book a year or so ago so this review benefits from the added perspective of time. At about that time, I was becoming more and more interested in wine, but at wine festivals and the like I found that I knew what I liked, but not why I liked it, and where I could go to explore the favored elements in more detail. I remember going through this book doing some of the exercises like trying different glass shapes, trying wines blindfolded, tasting wines made from the same grape but from different regions, etc. I occasionally had friends over to do some of the exercises in a party environment, and the exercises proved to be a great date idea as well! I remember her exercises were quite flexible as well suggesting cheaper alternatives to the classic examples. Other reviewers have pointed to the omissions of their favorite wine regions or varietals, but this book is very much focused on exciting the novice, and might be overstepping its goal by presenting the limited reference section at all. Not everything can be covered here, but it's a fun springboard into the world of wine by one of the true experts in the field.

3 out of 5 stars Fun and interesting, but sometimes lacking.......2004-03-05

The topic of wine can intimidate many people and Jancis goes out of her way to diminish the fear factor. Many of her explanations are excellent, her exercises are fun and she is always encouraging and positive. The best part is that she really does help the reader identify and isolate the different building blocks of taste: for example, what does acidity feel like on your tongue, and what does it taste like in a yoghurt versus lemon, and finally in a young pinot noir versus and aged cabernet? However, at times I found that Jancis did not give enough information and left me confused. For instance, she says that Riesling wines fall into the semi-sweet category, but neglects to mention that this is only for German Rieslings; Rieslings from Alsace are very dry. Buy this book if you are willing to spend homework time in the wine store and reading other books, supplementing what Jancis tells you herself. Also, since most of these exercises are based on blind tastings, buy the book only if you have someone with whom to do them.

    Book Description

The art of wine tasting invites you to get to know a supreme pleasure of the world of the senses and the realm of the spirit. It's partly about value--identifying the quality of a wine so you never overpay at a restaurant or in stocking your own cellar. But, wine tasting is also about learning the difference between a good wine and a great one. Most important is the pleasure of taking a sip and knowing the story of where a wine came from, how its grapes were grown, the techniques used to make it, and how it can promise to provide an unforgettable evening. The quick course comes with instructions and exercises that train you in what to look for. Vocabulary tips are accompanied by "Tasting Briefs"--practical advice on everything from choosing wines with food to using all your senses of smell, taste, touch, sight, and even hearing.

4 out of 5 stars A detailed and informative book........2001-09-04

I like the book and am glad to have it. The information is thorough. We had it with us when we went on an outing, and it made the stay even more pleasurable. I wish the drawings were detailed and colored rather than just outlines of the plants. The color plates are too dark. Aside those two things, the book is worth having.

4 out of 5 stars There is more then survival in the desert........2000-07-26

This is a wonderful concise book on edible and nonedible plants of the desert. She includes the Latin name for each plant making it easy to find out more about any one plant. Has good color plates, although I would have liked larger pictures of some of the plants.I am very glad I purchased it and I think anyone who likes seeing more in a plant then something to step on or over will enjoy it.I know I do.

Ever dream of living off the land? A Taste of Nature is a guide to edible plants. This book tells you how to identify edible plants, and gives you a recipe for each plant. In addition, it is beautifully illustrated and reader-friendly.

      Product Description

Where as the 'Old World' cultivated blended wines, the wines of the New World are mostly made from a single variety of grape. There is no better way to prevent being caught out on the subject of blended wines than by learning to recognize the grape varieties that make up the blends. This is the very original aim of this easy-to-understand tasting guide. A wise book, written by a journalist specializing in viticultural issues, which also contains a detachable card showing which grape varieties best accompany which dish.

      1 out of 5 stars A Carelessly Constructed Book.......2006-11-13

I think the fact that the title of the book is misspelled on the spine ("Single Grape Vines") is a good indication of the overall care that went into this. The writing is sloppy, the ideas are poorly conveyed, and the same photographs are repeated over and over. There was no attempt to make a serious or useful book; it's just schlock to make a few bucks off of hurried Christmas shoppers.

Although its true that some of the coins included in this guide may be popularly collected, I think that their inclusion in this book is a waste of space. Rather than including the State Quarters; Ike, SBA, and Sacagewea dollars; and the Kennedy Halves, which are all too modern to justify inclusion - a better choice would have been the Draped Bust coinage (cents, quarters, halves, dollars), Shield Nickels, and Seated Quarters and Halves. As far as the photos go, they are a hundred times better than those miniature ancient black and white blobs from in the ANA guide. The images of the copper coinages are beautiful, but they could have done a better job which the nickel and silver issues - a bit more contrast and less brightness would have made the details stand out much better. Also, I noticed a few instances where the image of a lower grade coin shows a coin with more detail that the next grade up. A steep cover price, but the best book currently on the market.

                4 out of 5 stars Informative Summary.......2007-07-04

A nice reference book for helping novice collectors review and grade coins. I will be taking it with me the next set I start working on. Has lots of photos as examples for what to look for in classifying each grade for a coin, which makes interpreting the words easier.

I totally agree with the last reviewer. This book is an extension of "It's Okay if You Sit on My Quilt" book, which is, by far, my most favorite quilt book out there. The reason why I like this book so much is because Mary Ellen shows you how to look at blocks and patterns differently. Her creative approach and imagination is impressive. Her books, however, are not your average quilting books. You won't find an area about binding or quilting, or how to use a rotary cutter. I like the section about making stars without flying geese. Instead, you take rectangles and sew squares to the ends and then flip them open. This book is good for seasoned quilters who would like to see designs in a new way.

                2 out of 5 stars a review.......2004-10-23

I am very disappointed with this book, I have not gotten her "sitting on my quilt" book yet, and it seems that almost all of the quilts in this book are an extension of that book. I frequently don't know about what she is talking.. Hopefully, when I get her "sitting on my quilt" book, this book will make more sense to me...it can't stand by itself
