All cooks should master sautéing, a time- and flavor-saving technique. How to Sauté provides a succinct but comprehensive tutorial. In fewer than 100 pages it offers illustrated, step-by-step instructions for meat, poultry, and seafood sautéing--recipes, tips, and information that all cooks can use.
Beginning with a particularly good section on sauté basics, the book then offers chapters that explore sautéing methods for chicken, turkey, and veal cutlets; pork medallions; steak; fish fillets and steaks; shrimp and scallops. For each of these, core recipes are presented with variations or suggestions for sauce or composed butter accompaniments. Thus, for example, readers learn to sauté steak perfectly, then how to prepare it with red wine and brandy peppercorn sauces for steak Diane, or with Roquefort butter, among other approaches. Throughout, underlying techniques are explored and illustrated (how to slice veal cutlets is a good one), and sensible tips abound (keep the pan moving when sautéing prone-to-stick fish fillets, for example).
A true primer, the book is part of the Cook's Illustrated Library series. Like the magazine, the books are dedicated to presenting tried-and-perfected recipes and cooking techniques in a concise, approachable way. --Arthur Boehm

Collecting Victorian Jewelry: Identification And Price Guide
ASIN: 0887401201 |
Book Description
The identification and dating of American jewelry heretofore has been difficult because few pieces bear standard markings and the references have been diverse, hard to find, and incomplete. Using old trade journals and their related directories as her primary sources, the eminent silver historian Dorothy Rainwater has exhaustively compiled here for the first time a comprehensive reference of jewelry trademarks and manufacturers in alphabetical order. She has also written a history of jewelry making in the United States which explains the framework upon which this enormous industry was built. The large scale manufacturers which began in the 1840s form a major portion of this directory. it is surprising to learn that only in 1961, after years of effort by the Jeweler's Vigilance Committee and the backing of trade journals, did American law require makers' marks on new jewelry. Therefore, this reference should become an important sourcebook for every jeweler, collector, antique jewelry dealer and manufacturing historian for the foreseeable future.
Customer Reviews:
Good book but missing info!!!!!!!.......2007-06-13
This is a great ref book for Jewelry Companies that are long gone, their marks and company background. However it is missing some well known companies from the 50's and 60's but to it's credit there are also marks that ARE included that belong to little known companies. The layout could be improved as sometimes companies marked with a logo, and not the name, finding the logo means you have to search the whole book if you don't know who it was made by. That being said the book is a must have for all jewelry collectors as the info contained within is NOT the opinion of the author, it is taken from actual historical books, and vintage Trade guides etc.
An Essential for the Jewelry Collector.......2005-11-21
If you collect jewelery fine or costume this book is a must. Those little marks that you need your 10X loupe for are deciphered! This is not an exhaustive list because there are new treasures found every day but it will really help the collector figure out just who made that lovely item! Get this one now.........

Customer Reviews:
Modern Scandinavian architecture at its best.......2006-06-12
I love Scandinavian architecture, both traditional and modern. This book has well done photographs of some of the most simply eloquent modern Scandinavian homes. It makes you want to live in one of these most appealing dwellings. Every so often I look through the book once more and enjoy the beautifully photographed exteriors and interiors of the homes all over again.
200+ Pictures of Functional and Beautiful Interiors........2004-07-26
The first time I went to Scandinavia, I arrived in Helsinki late in the evening. I went to my hotel, and in the first few minutes I understood what was so special about Scandinavian design. The otherwise ordinary hotel room stood out as one of the best I have ever seen. It was not a tremendously expensive hotel, rather middle of the road. But simple things: the door, the faucets in the bathroom, the furniture, all were so much more elegant looking than what we find in the United States.
Now I'm in the process of designing a house. I went looking for a book on interior design that would reflect what I had seen there. I found several, but this one shows more elements of design that reflect what I like. Simple things, like an office table. Easy enough to find, once I knew what I was looking for. A bed: simple, elegant, and better looking than anything I've seen in other publications.
If you're looking for something for yourself or if you're doing a Scandinavian home for a customer I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
This book focuses on the art and craft of Scandinavian style, and details in depth the creation of an exquisitely crafted Wisconsin family compound in the style of Swedens great colorist and artist, Carl Larsson. Offering a wealth of ideas and inspiration for anyone with an urge to redecorate, renovate, remodel, or build, Country Living Scandinavias hundreds of photos-taken over the two years it took to create and furnish this family retreat- show people how to replicate this marvelous design style themselves.
Customer Reviews:
A Special House.......2006-09-02
What a visual treat this book was. For anyone that has seen a painting of Carl Larsson's home and fallen in love with the clean lines and colors of Scandinavian interiors, this book carries that love to the next level. Wisconsin native Loran Nordgren created a home using the traditional elements like built-in beds, carving, colors, but added some contemporary conveniences. The books chronicles the planning and construction of the house, but the wealth of photos and design ideas have wide appeal.
Scandinavian Delights.......2004-12-15
I give Mr. Nordgren the owner high credit for the obvious mega $$$ he spent to have his Carl Larsson dream home come to life. However I concur with a prior reviewer that the interior decorating is sub-par with oversized furniture & decorator pieces that evoke a Non-Scandinavian feel that appears to conflict with its authetic Scandinavian backdrop of the houses interior details. If it was my money $$$ I would have sought out correct period Scandinavian antiques or had authentic pieces recreated from scratch with a 100% effort to create the Nordic "look". Would recommend the book as a strong buy with great design ideas throughout.
Fantastic read.......2004-09-21
As a lover of the traditional Scandinavian home style, and the owner of four such homes, I found this book truly helpful in decorating all of them. The authors, including Ms. Sears have such an passionate eye for this unique and gorgeous style.
An American Take on the Swedish Style Home.......2003-06-22
This is an excellent pictoral review of a lovely home recently built in the Wisconsin countryside. The book is full of great ideas for both interior and especially exterior architectural details. As an interior and architectural designer, I have stolen ideas extensively for a Scandinavian style home I am working on which is currently under construction. The house featured in the book is beautifully done, but not for those seeking a subtle take on the Swedish/Scandinavian home. Disneyesque could aptly describe the overall look and feel of the home. This is not to say it does not have a great charm, but it slams its design concepts home with no punches pulled. It is an American interpretation and distillation of Scandinavia.
There are a lot of great ideas for color and design for the built interiors, but I found the interior furnishings and accessories to be ameteurish and do not live up to the professional standard of the architecture that contains it. The furnishings are rather middle of the road contemporary country style and do not suit the carefully orchestrated design concepts of the architectural designer. For instance the sofas are large and clunky, and are upholstered in a bland fabric - none of which would ever been found in a house of this type of traditional Swedish home.
With that caveat I highly recommend the book to those who admire the Scandinavian style and especially to anyone planning to design and build a home in this style.
Scandinavian Interior Design.......2001-12-18
As a folk artist, I am interested in European interior design. My interest in Swedish design lies in the magnificient use of color. This book provided what I needed.

slim pickings for Swedish conversational tapes/CDs.......2006-08-04
Last year I was able to quickly learn a handful of polite and useful phrases in French with Teach Yourself One-Day French. For my trip to Sweden, I looked for the same series in Swedish -- but no luck.
In-Flight Swedish was all I could find and it really falls short. My biggest complaint is that you only hear/say each phrase once, so there's no way for you to reinforce it by saying, hearing or using it again (as you would with Pimsleur). They also try to cram in too many phrases, most of which you'll never use, let alone remember.
eh..........2003-03-22
I had already started learning the language before I got this, do not make the same mistake. If you are just starting to learn, this might help you... I guess it's kind of obvious now that I think about it.

Great book.......2007-01-25
I read both the original (Swedish) and English translations. The book is compelling and thought provoking. At the same time the English translation manages to be a light and easy read. All will enjoy this book, from the sci-fi reader to the existentialist to the causal "I just read the latest New York Times best seller" reader. There is something here for everyone.
An extended short story, but well worth reading.......1999-11-09
A unique novel (as far as I know), concerning the "life" of Epsilon, a brain saved from a dead person sustained in an experimental tank - all written in the first "person".
It goes on bit, but if you like books which make you a bit uneasy and make you think, read this one.

The first volume by Tomas Transtromer in almost a decade, For the Living and the Dead includes an unusual bonus: a prose memoir about the poet's childhood, which goes some distance to explain why he became an adolescent psychologist. In other respects, however, the collection is of a piece with Transtromer's earlier work. Why, he seems to ask, are words so sadly inadequate to convey our meaning to others? His solution in the face of this inadequacy is to merge the intimate lyric--as familiar in its tone as a personal letter--with the most stringent economies of language.
It has been said that Transtromer's work comes across well in translation because of its striking imagery. This is partly true, but he has no less firm a grasp on musical structure, cadence, and pacing. All these qualities are present in "Grief Gondola No. 2," translated by Robert Bly. An homage to Liszt, the poem resembles a musical composition, complete with theme, variations, and coda: "The heavily loaded gondola carries their lives, two return tickets and a one-way.... The heavily loaded gondola carries life, it is simple and black."
Transtromer is not a poet of the everyday, but one who needs a rupture of routine to steal his glimpse into another world. The poems are urgent encounters in which Transtromer seems to be in constant transit. Most often he depicts himself as a passenger, and an invisible one: "The carp in the pond are always moving, they swim while they sleep, / they are an example for the faithful: always in motion." But when the poet can enter into a communion with his subject--including, ultimately, the fellow-traveling carp in "Streets in Shanghai"--he persuades the reader that along with seeing, he has been seen as well. --Mark Rudman
Book Description
With this new volume of poetry, Tomas Transtromer once again demonstrates his gift for capturing and grounding the elusive, luminous details of our modern world. As its title suggests, For the Living and the Dead works to bridge the space between those real and unreal elements of life, suggesting that a surprising, redemptive cohesion can exist within a universe of opposing forces.
Transtromer has referred to his poems as "meeting places," with "their intent to make a sudden connection between aspects of reality that conventional languages and outlooks ordinarily keep apart. Large and small details of the landscape meet, divided cultures and people flow together in a work of art. . ." People and objects alike are given a certain weightiness, their presence filled with a potential carefully measured by the poet's eye and quietly attested to by his language. In "Vermeer," "The airy sky has taken its place leaning against the wall. /It is like a prayer to what is empty./ And what is empty turns its face to us/ and whispers/ 'I am not empty, I am open.'"
This volume combines Transtromer's recent poetry with a prose memoir of his childhood in Sweden, written in the same careful, unsentimental voice for which he is so beloved. Through this memoir the author reveals himself as a curious, sensitive child, interested in archeology and insects, terrified of school and his authoritarian teachers.
Characterized by the insight and integrity we have come to expect from his work, For the Living and the Dead confirms Tomas Transtromer as one of the most significant living poets writing in any language.
