Lots of variety.......2005-02-22
A big book of comfort foods. The first thirty pages of recipes in here are different breads and biscuits. I don't really make these so I haven't tried them but I wanted to mention it since there really is a great selection here. I've been enjoying the soups and chowders the most. They're written for the stove top but I love to use the slow cooker and the recipes have been really great for that too. There are lots of creole derived recipes like the red bean and black bean soups and the eggplant soup. I had never tried these before but both were great. The eggplant soup was particularly unique. I'm usually one to increases the spices in recipes or play with amounts but these were quite to my liking. Beyond this chapter I've tried a few of the salads and the guacamole is delicious in that it has a little green pepper and tomatillo added as well which I hadn't done before. I haven't tried the jambalaya yet but it looks great - using brown rice.
Blackberry winters and summer squash............2001-05-27
GREAT AMERICAN VEGETARIAN by Nava Atlas isn't the most comprehensive or best vegetarian cookbook I've ever used but it is a good cook book, and a good place to start if you're thinking of taking up the vegetarian lifestyle or you've just been read the riot act by your heart specialist. If you're an ovo-lacto kind of vegetarian, you'll apprectiate it more than if your pure vegan. Many of Atlas' receipes include eggs and cheeses.
I find too many of the receipes in VEGETARIAN include peppers (green, yellow, and red) and I am not fond of peppers but if you are then that won't be a negative factor for you. From my perspective, there are not enough receipes with eggplant(2). She has included a number of bean dishes, including a luscious one for Beer-Stewed-Pinto-Beans, which unfortunately for my gastrointestinal problems includes Jalepeno peppers, but I leave out the peppers. She highlights the squash-bean-maize connection and includes a lovely receipe for patty-pan squash.
There are any number of vegetable dishes from the south she might have included, but I suppose they fail the fat test. She includes a coleslaw recipe from North Carolina that must have been imported by a yankee cook after I moved away. The best coleslaw I ever ate was made in North Carolina by my mother-in-law Rachel who served it with barbeque. Rachel's secret ingredient was sugar. If it don't have sugar in it, it ain't Southern.
Though Ms. Atlas has made a heroic attempt to compile a cookbook that reflects traditional Southern and other regional dishes, she has included southern recipes that appeal to New England tastes (if they're Southern at all). That's okay if you have New England tastes, but the real taste test for a Southerner is based on the GASS factor -- Grease, Alcohol, Sugar and Salt. Ms. Atlas has compiled a bunch of healthy recipes. Give me a plate of pinto beans with fatback, collards with fatback, fried okra and cornbread (oh, and add a few slices of sweet onion on the side). Okay, okay, I'm going back on my diet.
Great American Vegetarian: Traditional Regional Recipes for.......2001-05-04
Nava Atlas has updated her original American Harvest cookbook and renamed it The Great American Vegetarian: Traditional Regional Recipes for the Enlightened Cook. She has added more than 50 new recipes and expanded the section of suggested menus.
Each recipe includes a complete nutritional analysis.
Atlas says "the criterion for choosing the recipes in this book was that they fit in with today's emphasis on healthy, lighter eating. . .." She has included regional cuisine from New England, the Pennsylvania Dutch, the South, Creole and Cajun, and the Southwest.
Cooks can spend the day with Atlas, starting with her special breakfast muffins and eggs, lunching on breads and soups, and finishing with salads, rice, beans, corn, or vegetable specialties. She didn't forget to include plenty of mouth-watering deserts.
Atlas's humor shows in the charming illustrations gracing nearly every page. She also sprinkled quotations from old books, such as "the cook who can do without onions has yet to be born," throughout her cookbook.
Married, and the mother of two, Atlas has written and illustrated several other cookbooks, and published numerous healthful food articles, as well as writing humor.
The Great American Vegetarian cookbook is not for vegans, as many recipes include dairy and/or eggs. Others will enjoy Nava Atlas's adaptions of their favorite regional recipes.
A Vegetarian Basic!.......1999-03-18
After checking this book out of our local library, I quickly realized that I would use it more than many other vegetarian cookbooks. Her choice of recipes is very interesting - simple, with different combinations of foods from across the country. This guide covers most of the major brands of collectibles, from Anheuser-Busch steins to Swarovski crystal and Willitts Designs Just the Right Shoe. It lists the original prices, retirement date, edition size, and replacement values for 68,000 items. It is very useful if you are planning to sell on an auction site and need to set your reserve--at least you'll know what it originally cost, and have some idea of what dealers are reselling it for today. Very useful. Good value.

This book covers most of the popular artists who create collectibles, and includes original prices for entire collections, contact info on companies, index of artists. A great reference for updating insurance or for looking up what you have missed, or have inherited!

A good amount of information on the manufacturers and artists responsible for a multitude of collectible lines. Includes a comprehensive listing of who offers member benefits for the increasingly popular Collector Clubs. Page after page offering immediate access to official item numbers, issue year and quantity, original issue price and the all-important current market value. Take one of these with you on your next trip to an antique mall. No longer will you pass on great bargains because, "you just didn't have any idea what it was worth".

This one is an 'oldie'!.......2007-04-05
This book has been on the beading scene for some years. It is NOT wonderfully photographed or filled with lots of color pages. But it is quite inexpensive too! What it is, though,is a simple and understandable approach to making beaded needle woven earrings with a distinctly native American Indian look using the ladder stitch and Cheyenne brick stitch. Seed beads and bugle beads, readily available, will make most of the projects.

This is the book from which I taught myself to bead earrings. The instructions and illustrations are excellent. I bless the clerk in the beading store in Seattle who steered me to this book, over all the others in the store, many years ago. Some of the others I have looked at for "beginners" I think I would have found very frusterating. If you want to try your hand at beading, this is a good, basic book and much cheaper than most.

Not for seed bead starters.......2003-04-09
This is not a starter book even though bead stitch techniques are shown much-enlarged in photographs. Jeanette's book provides an excellent springboard for the intermediate to advanced beader. The projects use seed beads and you will be required to be as competent with thread tension as you are with netting, brick stitch and peyote stitch. Are you bored with too-simple projects? Try some of Jeanette's ideas.
Turning seed beads into jewelry art.......2002-09-29
This is a jewelry making book for those who love to work with seed beads. Each chapter teaches a beading method and then follows with several projects utilizing that method.
The first method is the Back Stitch Technique in which beads are sewn onto a surface into a design, or sewn around the edge of a cabochon (a stone that is rounded and polished on one side, and flat on the other). These designs are then made into necklaces, earrings and pins. Using the Netting Technique, Brick Stitch, and Peyote Stitch, beads are sewn together with needle and thread into lacy designs, or to encase a cabochon, or fringed pouch amulets, or fringed tube-style necklaces. Last is a chapter on using a loom to weave beads into amulets and earrings.
Everything in this book is beautiful and classy, but will appeal to a certain taste. To me they suggest a Native American look. I envision seeing such pieces sold in boutiques at fairly high prices, being that they require closely detailed work and a lot of time.
The instructions are clearly explained and illustrated, and are necessarily very detailed. One needs to be prepared to take the time to follow them closely. However, there is an assumption that you already are familiar with regular jewelry finishing techniques, such as how to end with crimps and clasps. The typical instructions for finishing only say something like: "String a crimping bead....close the crimping bead with crimping pliers and trim off the excess tiger tail" or "use round-nose pliers to make a loop in the head pin. Attach ear wires."
I think this is an excellent book for those with patience and a taste for this kind of look.
Very Disappointed.......2001-08-13
I was extremely disappointed with this book. I was expecting patterns that were more up to date with the times and jewelry that I could wear to work and out to dinner. These patterns weren't difficult to understand but like I said, who would want to wear it out of the house. Possibly little children would wear while playing house or something. Extremely disappointed. Don't waste your money.
A beading banquet........2001-06-14
I'm on my third copy of this book. I've worn one out, loaned one to my daughter and, in order to keep one in hand, am ordering a back-up copy. Basic techniques, simple projects, excellent illustrations and step-by-step instructions in netting, peyote, loom and split loom, and techniques for beading around and incorporating cabouchons into the work are all here. Best of all, every project leads into innovation and creativity for the reader. For me, he simple peyote project has evolved into true life colored butterflies in beads. I heartily recommend this book to beginners and those who know the basics but want to jump ahead into creating their own designs.

As a former student of Mrs. Shanigan's (she teaches a jewelry class at the high school), I found this book very well demonstrated, and easy to follow. A must have!

Good Combination of Feng Shui and Interior Design.......2006-02-09
I liked the this book's integration of feng shui and interior design. Set up more like a decorating book with lots of pictures, it gives you many interesting, specific ideas on what you can do to improve your interior spaces as it relates to feng shui. I didn't agree with all of the ideas, like naming your plants after your relatives, which I found a bit odd, but at least they were creative ideas. This book would be a good addition to anyone's feng shui library as it explores the subject from a different angle than most of the books on the market.
Good book but needs more detail.......2005-10-23
Feng Shui is about room decor that makes you feel good and the more detailed the book the better you'll arrange each room in you home. This book could use more detail and I do recommend that if you like it you get a Lo Pan and this other book to go with your Feng Shui collection, The Western Guide to Feng Shui: Room by Room (Feng Shui) (Paperback)

Lots of beautiful color pictures, but not much else.......2005-08-06
For each of the 9 ba gua sectors, she lists what to do with each type of room. I excitedly opened the book and began thumbing through it. Let's see, Self-knowledge, my office ... wait - there's no office listed. Ok, let's try Intimate Relationship, Dining Room ... "have fun with it." I wonder what she means? Ok - Creative Offspring, kitchen ... "use all four burners on your stove, even if it is only to boil water." Huh? Ok then - Health, bathroom ... "large mirror and upward sconce lighting above the sink." Ok, the bathroom advice is a little weak, but at least it means something. Hopefully you get the idea. I really wanted to like it, but bottom line is that it's not all that helpful.
Cream of the Crop.......2003-09-10
I attended a lecture from the author a few years ago. Ms. Stasney was engaging and informative- her book is equally so. It is the best book I've ever read on decorating with Feng Shui; it clearly states the fundamentals, uses easy to read diagrams, and features many stylish, modern concepts to fulfill the ancient principals. The pictures are gorgeous and not intimidating, and Ms. Stasney makes it practical to incorporate a little bit of Eastern wisdom into your home, or a full Feng Shui makeover. Buy this book first if you are starting out!
Easy-to-follow resource.......2002-02-09
Feng Shui Chic is a great resource for people who want to apply ancient principles of feng shui to modern-day living and individual tastes. This is one of the most clear and organized feng shui books I have read, and I have read many. The room-by-room guide is especially helpful, and the photos are fantastic!
