5 out of 5 stars Delicious family recipes and beautiful photos!.......2006-09-27

I love the Taste of Home cookbooks and magazines! Grandma's Favorites is filled with wonderful recipes. They are "real" recipes....ones that are not hard to make and can be made often. The recipes were submitted by real people who tell about their recipe. They don't have exotic ingredients that are hard to find. Some people will not agree that these are truly "Grandma's" recipes depending on one's idea of the definition; but this book includes 350 great classic family recipes you will want to try and that your family will love! They are easy to read and call for common ingredients and many of the recipes have photos. It is a wonderful addition to any cook's collection!

2 out of 5 stars Whose Grandma cooks like this?.......2006-09-19

I guess I expected more of a "comfort food" book and this is not it. There are a few recipes that would make me think of Grandma's cooking but most are a hodgepodge of standard recipes that probably only bring raves from fellow family members. I was looking forward to getting cozy and having a good read (I read cookbooks for entertainment as much as I cook from them) and I was let down. Do yourself a favor and spend the money and your time gathering your own family recipes and skip this book. Normally I love Taste of Home but this was a let down.

Betty Crocker provides more than 250 scrumptious recipe ideas for filling up your cookie jar with chewy cookies, crunchy shortbreads, chocolate brownies--and just about any sweet little number you can sink your teeth into. In true Crocker style, this sugary gem is laid out simply, with basic cooking instructions, giving plenty of tips and hints for creating that perfect recipe. Mouthwatering photographs of Luscious Lemon-Raspberry Bars, Almond Bonbons, Butterscotch Shortbreads, and many more make you want to get that rolling pin out now!

For quick reference, recipes are divided into eight chapters--there are cookies for kids, brownie and bar recipes, hand-shaped and -pressed cookies, rolled cookies, drop cookies, and cookies for special occasions. Happily for cooks in a real hurry, a whole chapter is devoted solely to store-bought mix recipes (Betty Crocker brand, of course). In a few simple steps, ready-made cake mixes can be adapted into delicious cookies. A carrot-cake mix transforms itself into Carrot-Molasses Cookies by simply adding margarine, light molasses, eggs, and nuts, if desired, which is then chilled and baked for eight minutes. Here are fabulous Caramel Fudge Bars, astounding Almond Bars, and perky Peanut Butter-Brickle Chip Bars, all brought to you via the wonder of mix!

Crocker and Co. doesn't forget special diets, either. There is a wonderful selection of wheat-free and egg-free cookies that still manage to taste fabulous. Particularly handsome are the Frosted Banana Bars--containing less fat and cholesterol than regular cookies.

Whatever your forte, Betty Crocker's Cookie Book has a sweet treat in store for you. --Naomi Gesinger

It seems natural that the originators of the Toll House cookie, including Ruth Wakefield, would create a great cookie book. The recipes are the kind that you can make for friends, family or just because. My favorite recipes are too numerous to name, but I have found this book to be inspirational and one of the easiest to follow. What's great is it has pictures of each cookie so that you can make sure you made it just right. This will be one of your favorites on your shelf definitely!

I bought this book for my daughter and when my husband saw it, he bought one for me. Another daughter wanted a different book (we don't need to all have the same one) but we can't find one we like nearly as well, so...I'm buying three now for my other children so I don't have to make this search again! There is a color photo of almost every cookie and bar and the recipes include some old favorites so we don't have to keep the old books and recipe cards. Every cookie we have tried is excellent and not difficult to make. We love using these recipes because we attend many potluck meals and need the selection. It's the best collection of cookie recipes I've ever had.

5 out of 5 stars A VINTAGE LOOK AT HALLOWEEN.......2005-06-07

We Americans tend to be somewhat near-sighted in our view of Halloween in thinking that our celebration of the day is relatively a modern fascination. And, in truth, Halloween has boomed in the past twenty years to become second only to Christmas in decorating and celebrating the season. As Diane C. Arkins shows in this wonderful book, however, Halloween has been widely celebrated for well over one hundred years and this book concentrates on what Arkins calls Halloween's golden age from the 1870's to the 1930's. The book is filled with hundreds of vintage photographs, illustrations, and magazine reprints from the period.

Halloween was not the ghoulish, gory holiday that it is today, but rather a day of revelry when people would hold parties for adults as well as children. Throughout the book writers of the times dispense advice, squarely aimed at women, on how to throw a successful Halloween party. We begin with invitations with some classic examples of period artwork depicting pumpkins, witches or black cats. Showing far more thought, as well as sophistication, magazines even gave advice on what to write, often favoring catchy little rhymes.

Halloween decorations became widely available during the 1910's and Halloween Merrymaking presents hundreds of photographs depicting these vintage decorations. Illustrations and photos show various themes of the times. Interestingly, many of these decorations are being recaptured these days by modern crafters. The fantastic crepe` paper and paper Mache decorations are a collectors dream!

Party favors presented to children or adults were staples of Halloween get-togethers in the golden age. A popular idea of the 20's and 30's was "Jack Horner Pies" in which a centerpiece stood in the middle of the table with ribbons pulled to the end of the table, separating it into wedges, one for each guest. Within each wedge the hostess places small gifts or party favors such as fortunes, written in milk on paper so they would be invisible until held under a light, The fortune would hen be placed inside a walnut shell.

The magazines of the era also offered advice on what to serve for your party and included such forgotten delicacies as Little Goblin Stuffed Eggs and Moon Sandwiches. The book even provides sample menus for different types of parties such as formal, informal, or children's. Next up is the entertainment with suggestions on music and dances and games, as well as advice on costumes. During the 20's and 30's occultism was extremely popular and the book offers numerous fortune-telling and divination games that people could play at their parties.

Finally Arkins reprints several full, vintage articles on Halloween from magazines such as Woman's Home Companion, Woman's World, and Ladies Home Journal. You really get a sense after reading the book just how much Halloween was enjoyed back then without the rampant commercialism of today. This is a nostalgic walk back in time to an era of simplicity and fun. It's fun and educational to see how our grandparents and great-grandparents may have celebrated Halloween decades ago. Highly recommended!

Halloween Merrymaking: An Illustrated Celebration Of Fun, Food, And Frolics From Halloweens Past
by Diane Arkins is a very fine year-round family or community library acquisition illustrating the Halloween celebration of fun, food and holiday partying. This is no repeat history: material from a range of the vintage party guides and magazines that guided hostesses in their party-giving endeavors is presented and showcased in a lively survey of festivities and small color photos.

            5 out of 5 stars A delightful journey into Halloween's past.......2004-10-21

A most thoroughly enjoyable book about Halloween. Wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated it takes you back to a bygone era of Halloween celebratons. A must have book for anyone who is interested in vintage Halloween.

            3 out of 5 stars A mostly-charming treat...just one trick........2004-10-06

I awaited the release of this book with keen anticipation, and overall, find it a delightful retrospective of Halloween celebrations of days gone by. The excerpts from vintage magazines and party guides are charming. My chief complaint lies with the design and treatment of the visuals in the book - they are painfully small. At such a reduced size, they don't allow the reader to fully appreciate the charm of the vintage advertisements, postcards, invitations and photos of costumed revelers.

4 out of 5 stars Good Day To You, Sweet Autumn: So Gently You Appear .......2004-09-29

Diane C. Arkins' Halloween Merrymaking: An Illustrated Celebration of Fun, Food, and Frolics from Halloweens Past (2004) offers a poignant but hopeful glimpse back into American high culture and the "Golden Age of American Halloween," which the author locates between 1870 and the early 1930s. Today, many deny that such a high culture ever existed in this country, or, if willing to make such an admission, will tar that culture as "elitist" and "oppressive."
Yet, at present, Americans everywhere crave a richer, more substantial, and refined existence than the mediocre model that the current popular culture promotes and sustains. Halloween Merrymaking looks back on a time when neighborhood and community, good manners and retail integrity, decorum and propriety, dress and composure, breeding and ingenuity, were all essential and unavoidable aspects of daily American life. Such cultural elements certainly represented strictures in some cases, but the rewards for such discipline was enormous: a thriving, evolving, positivistic, and multi - tiered society that strove to refine and improve itself in any number of ways.

Stressing above all that Halloween in the Golden Age was "hardly a monster's ball by any stretch of the imagination," Arkins focuses on the holiday as it was celebrated in magazines and periodicals of the era, which subtly dictated the civilized manner in which this most anarchic of American holidays was enjoyed by parents and children alike, whether at family gatherings, church socials, classroom frolics, bridge parties, or comparatively chic adult soirees. While children's party treats include the expected cakes, donuts, and candies brightly wrapped in autumn colors, a typical adult menu unselfconsciously suggests Oyster Canapes, Lobster Bisque, Waldorf Salad, and Broiled Squab.

Though the preface states that Halloween Merrymaking is not a "how - to manual" in the traditional sense, the book has sections lovingly devoted to "old fashioned" invitations, interior and exterior decoration, party favors, preparation of the party table, menus, costuming, appropriate music, and suitable games such as apple bobbing, nutshell auguries, tea leaf divination, and other forms of fun and fortune telling that have long roots in British history and folklore.

Though the finest commercial Halloween decorations, party favors, and costumes of the period are featured and emphasized, there are also numerous suggestions for making comparable items from orange, black, and white crepe paper and cardboard, standard kitchen vegetables, and other readily available materials. Ingenuity, enthusiasm, and a happy "can do" attitude are underscored throughout. America was largely an agricultural society at this time, a fact the book reflects in a number of meaningful and practical ways.

Halloween Merrymaking includes period photographs of parties and costumed partygoers, magazine covers and entire magazine articles (such as 1906's "A Jolly Forest Halloween" and 1909's "Under The Pumpkin Vine At Halloween"), and a wide variety of imaginatively depicted period reproductions of witches, jack o' lanterns, black cats, ghosts, harvest moons, owls, and fairies.

Highly recommended to those seeking inspiration and a cure for cynicism, apathy, and the present third - rate norm.

It is hard to believe that so much useful information is packed into these 160 pages! The book is well organized and full of illustrations and photographs that make every stitch, every point made about crochet so clear. I think I found this jewel (copyright 1986 version) at a book sale or yard sale, and am so glad I did. I learned to crochet at my grandmother's knee (when I was about five years old); after being away from crocheting for a couple of decades, I found this book a very comprehensive refresher, and believe it is a great resource for beginning and experienced crocheters alike. Tools and accessories, yarns, vocabulary, and other basics are covered, as well as the basic stitches, and later on, in a well-organized section, pattern stitches. Fur stitches, hairpin crochet, broomstick crochet, and much, much more... even how to convert knit patterns to crochet patterns... is all contained in this book that also includes a detailed index. A delight!

This is one of the better books I've found for the novice builder. The plans are simple with materials list for different sizes. Nothing fancy with this book just downright practical. You won't get lost in lingo. If you've built items in the past and are intermediate in skill, this may be too simple. This is a great first book on construction.

            5 out of 5 stars Wordless Cartoons.......2005-03-06

I had seen this book in the stores when it was first published. When I went to buy one it could not be found an so a couple of years went by an I would think about it when I would see one of the cartoons in the back of a woodworking magazine. Finely decided to look on the internet to see if I could fine one. Got this one an just love it. I have already used a couple of the projects from the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Well "Written" Work with a Wealth of Ideas.......2001-10-09

Doty divides his subject matter into five categories: 1. Cabinents, Closets, & Shelves; 2. Around the House; 3. The Workshop; 4. Sports, Toys, and Entertainment; and 5. The Great Outdoors. Each section contains from six to seventeen individual projects, 60 some odd projects in all.

The projects are set forth in a series of wordless cartoon panels. The first panels state the problem, and the final panels present a simple, easily "engineered" solution to the problem.

The cartoons are well drawn and amusing. The step-by-step directions are understandable and within the capacities of the most inept hammer-mechanic. You can follow the directions exactly, or you can let your imagination soar as you adapt the projects to your specific needs.

5 out of 5 stars It really IS wordless.......2001-02-04

What a cool book! The problem is presented in a cartoon. For instance.. (I have six kids, this is my favorite)... a woman sorting through laundry to wash, trying to separate the colors. Laundry is all over the floor in front of the machine.

The solution: A frame is built which holds six little trash bins, stacked up one on top of the other, so clothes can be sorted into them by color, without taking up much floor space at all. Then the woman is shown, emptying the whites into the washer - no mess!

No words are used but the methods of creating these little organizational solutions are very simple to understand.

I am not a handyman (or handywoman) at all, but I really felt these concepts were clear, and we have used several of the solutions presented.

Other little gems in this book are: drawing paper dispenser, making a 2-pole closet, creating a nice organizer for rakes, shovels and the like, a neat little stand for roller blades, a ball stacker that goes on the back of a door, and even a baby bottle rack.

Every project is simple to do and easy to understand.

I recommend this book for any large family! Some of us just need to have every organizational tool we can get our hands on!!

Many of these items are very useful around the home;they are easy to do, especially for a person like myself who is mechanically declined. There is a nice variety for people of all ages and skill levels.

4 out of 5 stars A book full of pretty pictures.......2004-04-19

[Note: The title on the book is "Storage Space". There is no "s" at the end.]

"Storage Space" is one of a number of books in a series titled "simpleSolutions". Coleen Cahill has written a bunch of these, but her work load isn't as heavy as you might expect. Except for a few pages at the beginning and end this book has at most two paragraphs of text per page; most pages have one picture and a one-paragraph description of the storage shown in that picture. So this isn't a book that will TELL you about storage solutions so much as SHOW you some sample solutions. It's a shame that the photographs don't have credits, because they're the real meat of this book.

"Storage Space" is full of glossy color photos with excellent contrast and color fidelity. These are all from fully-built homes; while the composition may not be ideally focused on the storage elements displayed, the context of a furnished home helps communicate storage ideas better than any close-up of empty cabinetry ever could. The pictures don't show "lived in" homes, though; every room is dressed by a decorator for its photo opportunity. It gets pretty monotonous looking at desk after desk with potted plants but no paper (except for the obligatory single notebook, open, with a pen laid across it at the exact same angle in every picture).

The built-in storage that's the main feature of this book is custom cabinetry, mostly in blond wood, for the 3% of homes that are designed by architects. Because of this emphasis there's no discussion of how the storage is built, whether it can be added easily to existing homes, or what it will cost. The level of detail doesn't get into things like fitting niches between wall studs, designing for expandability, or whether open storage units will collect dust. But the pictures are gorgeous!

Summary: Very pretty picture book, which will give you some ideas about adding built-in storage if you're planning a new custom home or a major remodel job.

                        Description:
At present there exist unsolved questions, whether endotoxin measurements on PM filters show valid measurements after long-term storage of loaded PM filters. As part of the TRAPCA study we collected particles with a 50% aerodynamic cut-off diameter of 2.5 @mm (PM"2"."5) at 40 outdoor sites and particles less than 10 @mm in size (PM"1"0) at a subset of these sites (N=12) in Munich. The PM filters were cut in halves and endotoxin was measured in the extract of one filter half 2-3 years after PM collection. Here we present the results of repeated endotoxin measurements, where the association between previously measured endotoxin concentrations, measurements from stored eluates, and measurements in extracts of the second filter halves were determined. No statistically significant changes were seen between our old measurements and those from the stored eluates. Additionally, no change was observed between previously measured endotoxin concentrations and those from the stored set of filter halves. We found an average increase of 5% between our old measurements and those from the stored eluates and of 19% between the old measurements and those from the stored set of filter halves. The correlations between the previously measured endotoxin concentrations and the repeated measurements from the stored eluates were high (r=0.789) for EU/m^3 PM"2"."5. Since endotoxin was evaluated from the same set of filter halves, it is obvious that storage over three years did not substantially effect the correlation of the endotoxin content. Regarding the outliers from previous measurements unsymmetric endotoxin spots on one out of 48 filter halves could be determined. Apart from this we conclude that the endotoxin is homogenously distributed on the filter halves and that endotoxin levels, which were repeatedly measured from filters stored over three years, could be determined validly.
