5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!.......2001-06-13

I got mine bargin elsewhere for $... but it was worth every penny! The first part of the book features 10 different themed menus which is great cuz I always get tired of just making mashed potatoes and rice for side dishes. The menus come complete with entrees and 1st courses, etc.....

The rest of the book features pictures and is dividing into the standard sections that most cookbooks have: chicken, meat, poultry, starters/1st courses, deserts, etc.....

I love this book because the recipes are gourmet but indgredients are not rare and they are not as complicated to make.

This book is great if you are not into "comfort foods" and want to really cook something that tastes divine and pleases your husband/significant other :)

5 out of 5 stars A must in your cookbook library........1999-07-06

All the recipes are easy to make and delicious!! If I come home late and need to put something together, I go right for this book. The Oriental Spaghetti with Shredded Vegetables and Spicy Peanut Sauce is great and to make it easier, I just have all carrots. The Grilled Flank Steak is a snap with white rice on the side. All the recipes are simple and tasty with stuff you can easily find at your local grocery store. I highly recommend it, especially if you don't have a lot of time to put a meal together.

5 out of 5 stars Truly easy recipes. Great photos. You'll love it!.......1999-01-04

I've cooked at least a dozen recipes from this cookbook. Each one is easy. All of them turn out great! The recipes use standard ingredients and spices found in most kitchens. The photos are mouth-watering. Get this book! Also makes a great gift.

Book Description

You know you're hooked when you get that feeling in the pit of your stomach. Is it a shortness of breath or a flush that comes to your face when you see it in a case at an antique mall, or on someone's arm as you stroll down the aisle shopping at an antiques show? Has someone caught you staring intently at their wrist or lapel and mistaken your focused gaze for some sign of familiarity? If any or all of the above symptoms or scenarios seem familiar to you, it's possible you may have it! Yes, it's all too true, you may indeed be suffering from...BAKELITE FEVER! The Bakelite Collection describes some of the many differing collecting preferences of some of the nation's most prolific appreciators of fine Bakelite jewelry. Men and women, doctors and lawyers, modernists and traditionalists alike have fallen prey to Bakelite fever. Their stories, experiences, lovingly assembled collections will delight every Bakelite collector. The Bakelite Collection showcases these fantastic jewelry arrays in luscious detail, using full color photography. A price guide makes it a truly valuable book for all sufferers of Bakelite Fever.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Too much jewelry not enough prices.......2005-03-02

I bought this book to learn about Bakelite, to get an idea of prices and for bakelite other than jewelry. If you are looking for a book with a lot of pretty color pictures of jewelry, this book is for you. For my needs, there was only 4 pages that I found useful.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2001-02-06

This book will take your breath away. If you're a Bakelite aficionado, you'll want this book to show others why you are. If you're a novice collector, as I am, you'll see how wrong you were if you thought Bakelite consisted of jewelry, radios, napkin rings and salt and pepper shakers (though those are here, too, and probably as you've never seen them). And if you (perhaps most enviously of all) have no idea what Bakelite is, this book is the best possible introduction. Color photographs spaciously and copiously displayed throughout tell the story, with just enough text to supplement without being invasive.

Much of the book's power derives from the ways in which different collectors display and combine their Bakelite. Sometimes it's the sheer volume that makes the impact, and sometimes it's the unexpected and witty use of Bakelite where you'd expect to see real fruit or flowers. And sometimes, when a piece is just extraordinary, it'll be shown on a jacket lapel or on a wrist -- and that's all you'd want.

Categories include things like "Patriotic," "Carved," "Reverse Carved," "Nautical," "School Days," "European," "Tropicale," "The Bakelite Table," but these are merely organizational devices that don't in any way make the presentation monotonous or predictable. The colors of Bakelite are as varied as the pieces in which they're found. With this much variety, there's nothing monotonous about the Bakelite on display.

I bought this book on a whim and without benefit of being able to page through it; seldom have I had a whim so handsomely and expensively rewarded. I say "expensively," because the book sends me to ebay, where I'll begin adding to those napkin rings and s/p shakers immediately.

5 out of 5 stars a must for any bakelite colector.......1999-04-04

Beautifully photograped bakelite jewelry and objects. A must for any beginning or advanced collector. Great guide for a "wish list". Highly reccommended.

5 out of 5 stars It is the cream of the crop of Bakelite books........1998-08-31

The pictures are excellent. There are more pictures in this book than in any other Bakelite book I bought. The book has a tremendous variety of bakelite that I have ever seen (pins, bracelets, crib toys). I rate it an A++++.

5 out of 5 stars A huge, gorgeous and comprehensive book on Bakelite jewelry!.......1998-07-22

Matthew L. Burkholz is one of the premiere dealers of Bakelitejewelry. When he was writing and compiling this book, he had accessto the collections of today's leading collectors . Because of this, his book showcases the greatest assortment of high end Bakelite jewelry I've ever seen. Everything is in here, from Celluloid and Lucite to the most wonderful Bakelite available. There's even a section on Bakelite barware and salt and pepper shakers. Matthew's informative comments, and John Hylton's beautiful photographs, give the reader a delicious and delightful education. Published in 1997, the price guide seems accurate. Probably the most unique and fun feature of this book is that Matthew includes a chapter on the collectors themselves. With several pages devoted to each, we learn about the people and their collections. The reader also gets a glimpse into the homes of some collectors and sees how they display and live with their collections. Guaranteed to make you drool, this book is great!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book .......2007-01-04

This is a beautifully photographed book. Shows many wonderful pieces of vintage bakelite jewelry. I can't fault it except to say, I wish it had even more examples of bakelite to look at.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous pictures of rare pieces.......2005-02-07

This was the first book on Bakelite jewelry that I ever bought, and the mouthwatering pictures wheted my appetite to start collecting Bakelite jewelry. However, after this luscious introduction, I was in for a big disappointment out in the real world. Most of the stunning pieces in this book have long since been snapped up by collectors, and in the years since I got this book I have rarely found a piece of Bakelite that appears in it. In terms of seeing some of the best of the best, Davidov shows Bakelite jewelry at it's finest. She also does much to enlighten collectors about the Bakelite jewelry industry. Although there is a rudimentary pricing guide, it is completely out of date and is of little use to today's collector. None the less, Bakelite collectors will enjoy this book. It's not a collector's guide. Instead, this beautiful book is a glorious celebration of top of the line vintage Bakelite jewelry, and a guilty pleasure to just thumb through and savor....

5 out of 5 stars Still the premiere book on Bakelite jewelry!.......1998-07-22

The Bakelite Jewelry Book by Davidov and Dawes was publishedin 1988 and it was the first book I bought when I started collectingBakelite jewelry several years ago. Big and beautiful, with wonderful pictures, this book does a great job of showing the variety and personality of this fun jewelry while also educating the reader about the history of Bakelite. Unfortunately, the price guide in the back is now outdated. This book is a visual feast and even though I now have a shelf full of books on bakelite it is still the first book I grab when I want to check on a piece!

Book Description

From plastic use by early astronauts to its broad application by today's art curators and experts in museums and galleries for everything from storage to high-tech crating, this authoritative publication serves the needs for the professional and layperson alike as a reference.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clear and consise.......2001-05-03

This book is ideal for anyone interested in the conservation of plastics, and you don't need a scientific background to understand it. It begins with simple and easy to follow information on the basics of plastics (putting science into a accessable format brilliantly). It then covers the types of degradation that can occur with pictures, and the conservation steps that can be taken both in a private collection and on the larger museum scale. The book is in the format of several individual papers for each topic, thus utilising the experience of a range of experts and giving the reader a well rounded view of the topic. For example, the chapter on caring for plastics takes you through caring for plastics in the home, caring for plastics in museums, galleries and archives, plastics for storage and display, and conservation research in the 1990's. Like the other chapters it caters for the range of interest levels, from the home collector to those considering further study. The last chapter of the book is devoted to references and a well-appointed glossary. It provides website addresses as well as the usual journal and book refernces. It's definately the most wothwhile book I've read on the subject.

    Book Description

Composites. We hardly ever think about them, but we use them everyday. We play, work, fly, ride, eat, wear and build with them. We find them literally everywhere, in skis, surfboards, motor helmets, bicycles, canoes, and silverware. Formula 1 couldn't do without them. In fact, the car and motor industry, the space industry, the aeronautics industry, the building industry, the army, and the medical world can't make much without their material magic. Despite their indispensability, the creation and development of composites is hardly known. From Bakelite to Composite aims to correct this oversight by presenting the history of composites and their various types, processing techiniques and applications in the design and styling of masses of consumer goods. More than 200 illustrations reveal the strength, durability, and lightness of composites as found in furniture, lighting, sporting equipment, cars, and also artworks by Panamarenko, Tony Cragg, Niki de Saint-Phalle, and others. Published in cooperation with the Design Museum, Ghent.

It takes only a drive through any typical American subdivision to confirm that in recent decades the average house has grown in size, narrowed in style, and shrunk in vision. Jim Tolpin's The New Cottage Home represents a return to a previous school of thought about living space: that it should be no larger than is needed, conservative of resources, rich in detail-- in short, that it should pay homage to honest architecture and fine craftsmanship, not to conspicuous consumption. The 30 cottage homes pictured, all recently built, have the slightly unfair advantage of almost magically beautiful locations, but each has a unique character and many cottage-style nooks and crannies: the converted island pump house with sod roof, the 600-square-foot woodland temple, the salvage-built house on the Kansas prairie, the off-the-grid shingled hilltop house built to take advantage of natural light. Tolpin does an excellent job of pulling together the elements of each that make it a cottage and make it appealing. In his own words, "These houses seem to call as much to the heart as to the head, enriching us more with the highs of nature than with the highs of technology. These are the new American cottages that embody the ancient storybook dream, and the kind of homes that many of us have always dreamed of living in."

                Book Description

The New Cottage Home taps into today's move toward lifestyle simplicity and the idea that living space should be rich in details, conservative of resources, and no larger than necessary. Jim Tolpin celebrates the diversity and charm of 30 sample cottages, from a Pacific Northwest cottage modeled after a French hunting lodge to a "salvage yard vernacular cottage" built with junkyard materials. Each featured home reflects individual personality, priorities, and lifestyle. Whether by the water, on a mountain, or in a forest, field, or town, these homes emphasize quality of place over quantity of space.

This book is great if you want gables and a structure with more character but more expensive. I am looking for simple structures. I do like the book a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price...........2006-02-23

As an avid cottage fan, and living in one while designing a new one to build for myself which is even more zen and simple, I found this book to be one of the best books on cottages around. Although I also admit what was considered a cottage when my place was built someone hundred years ago and what is considered a cottage in 2006 is around five square feet more in size.

Of course I am a purest and go by what my dictionary says a cottage is which is 1 : the dwelling of a farm laborer or small farmer 2 : a usually small frame one-family house. Small being reduced in size. So I was surprised that on page 112 they show a French Hunting Lodge from the Pacific Northwest. Not a cottage at all.

What does make this good sized book useful for anyone looking for ideas on cottage styles is the vast array of examples given. From the coastline of Maine to the San Juan Island of Washington State, to rural Kansas to Massachusetts to favorite areas here in California.

And wonderful examples of simple to elaborate. One of my favorites because of its really simple zen style is the Pumphouse on pages 52-59 on San Juan Island in Washington State that was made into a smooth lined, all in one cottage which I and other minimalists would love to own. Or the wonderful Salvage Yard cottage in Franklin County, Kansas on page 156-161 that would fit in just about anywhere where clean lines and environmental desires are important.

There is even an off the grid cottage and some communities of nothing but cottages like those on Lopez Island in Washington State beginning on page 196, where the cottages are part of a land trust that was set up to allow people on moderate incomes to build small abodes with common greenbelt areas in and area where expensive homes were/are the norm. Heck, this made the book worth the price in itself.

Each cottage is shown inside and out complete with basic blueprints of each cottage so one can see how the space sits and works. The photography and text meld well and makes this a book that is hard to put down.

5 out of 5 stars The Tasha Tudor Cookbook.......2007-07-23

This book is so charming. The artwork is lovely and the recipes are good too. It's a book to use and treasure for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2007-06-26

I bought this more for nostalgia, so in that case it gets 5 stars for pictures and memories. Most of the recipes are modern, yet impractical. There are a few that I would say are great heirloom recipes, but that's all.

                5 out of 5 stars Tasha Tudor's World -- a birdseye view!.......2007-06-03

Anything by Tasha Tudor is a work of art! Her illustrations, and down to earth practicality, is revealed -- upclose -- in this delightful book! This is the kind of book you can give a little girl of any age -- even 99!

                5 out of 5 stars Return to Grandmother's kitchen.......2007-05-07

Tasha Tudor's cookbook makes you long for the past when your grandmother taught you how to make the perfect pie crust. Ms. Tudor's own illustrations add to the charm of a book that reminds you of happy times spent in the kitchen. Her recipes and personal stories encourage you recreate that time with your own children and grandchildren.

                5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-09

The recipes are great, but what I loved more are the beautiful illustrations.... This is a book I will keep for my grandchildren.

5 out of 5 stars new cottage style.......2006-11-24

I loved this book, and keep going back to it again and again, for comfy and yet clean looks for a more modern interpretation of cottage. I'm not that much into white, and like a spare but not modern look, and this book had enough examples of ways to do that to be really helpful. yarrow_m

3 out of 5 stars Great Design, No Help.......2006-11-14

I truely enjoy this book. The photography and ideas are very current and create a mix of style, comfort & ideas I personally delight in. However, I was so disappointed there was no resource guide...at all. :(
I have spent days trying resource the botanical prints and have come up empty.
                oh, well.

                3 out of 5 stars Just ok.......2006-05-18

Not my favorite cottage book, and I own many. There was just nothing special about it. It didn't inspire me as I had expected. I didn't enjoy the reading - didn't hold my interest. It does have some nice pictures.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry to say............2006-02-25

This was just an O.K. book. I love decorating books, this is my least favorite. Usually decorating books inspire me and I can't put them down or at least have to fill the book with post-it notes to mark great ideas. This book I looked at,once maybe twice... it didn't give me the inspiration to do anything. Pictuers are nice... but the context, the way its split up ,then and now is just boring . There are much better books on cottage decor out there. just have to say sorry but not my fav.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Beautiful Book.......2005-08-13

Finally, a Cottage Decor book with pure class. I rarely leave reviews but felt a overwhelming need to share my thoughts. My first thought just looking at the pictures, WOW! This book is packed with many inspirational ideas that is very doable for anyone interested in creating a home in beautifully updated Cottage Style. If you like Cottage home style, this book will give you a fresh new approach to all types of Cottage Decorating. As a Interior Decorator, I highly recommend that you get this book. You will not be disappointed!

Mr. Trulove captures the spirit and vitality of cutting edge cottage and second home designs. Beautiful writing and photographs. This hard cover book is a vast improvement from his earlier series on Architecture. Also the smaller size is easier to carry and read away from the office. Very inspiring to read as a Landscape Architect!
