5 out of 5 stars Get your goat (cheese).......2001-02-24

One of the nicest culinary trends to happen in the 90's was the introduction of goat cheese (much of it made in small American dairies) to the general public.

Goat milk is different from cows milk in flavor (more rich and herby) and in the fact that the fat or cream is distributed in small droplets. Goats milk is naturally homogenized.

There are countless kinds of goat cheeses, but the most common kinds found in American grocery stores and specialty markets are excellent for many purposes. But since goats milk cheese (chevre) is different than cows milk cheese, this cookbook is a great idea to know how to use it. The Brennans are a mother-daughter team with experience raising goats, making cheese and writing for culinary publications.

Some of the great recipes in this book are Peppered Ribeye steak with goat cheese, Grilled Eggplant and Goat Cheese Rolls, and Poached Winter Pears with Sweet Goat Cheese--which is my personal favorite along with warm goat cheese salad. The book also has a short history of the cheese and a guide to the types of goat cheeses. Although a specialty book, I turn to it often for dinner parties because goat cheese adds such elegance to a menu and because it can substitute for a meat course if you are entertaining vegetarians who eat dairy products.

        Book Description

Carlo Scarpa was a virtuoso of light, a master of detail, and a connoisseur of materials. Today he is known as a 20th-century master of architecture. To mark the first centenary of Scarpa's birth, all his works are presented here for the first time. The 250 illustrations cover all 58 of his structures, including the Castelvecchio Museum (Verona), the Olivetti showroom (Venice), and the Brion Tomb in San Vito d'Altivole (Treviso), as well as his important glass designs. The book includes essays by leading architects and architecture critics, offering an extensive overview of Scarpa's life as well as interpretations of his architecture. Known as the "Frank Lloyd Wright of Italy," Scarpa's decorative style has become a model for architects wishing to revive craft and luscious materials in the contemporary manner.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book. Period........2007-03-12

Excellent coverage of Scarpa's work. There are great shots of Scarpa's intricate detailing as well as shots expressing his space making abilities. Scarpa combined the spirit of the international style, the warmth of Finish modernist materiality, and the passion of Italian arts and crafts tradition. He was a modernist with heart. One of the men listed in the acknowledgements gave my studio group a tour of some if his best works in northern Italy including the Brion tomb. The man cried during his lecture. Scarpa brought heart to a building aesthetic that seems largely sterile when comparing his contemporaries on the other side of the Alps. I hope this book popularizes this truely skilled architect and draws greater attention to what he accomplished during his career. This book is pertinent to anyone interested in architecture, interior design, or decorative arts. His genious was as much in the process of design as it was in the completed product. He developed decades long relationships with builders and craftsmen. Buy this book and spend hours studying every detail in the photos. You are going to learn something. You might even shed a tear after leaning how he passed away.

5 out of 5 stars Filling the gaps.......2007-02-16

This book fulfills the promise that "Carlo Scarpa: The Complete Works" did not deliver in that it is a very complete survey of Scarpa's built work. Among the things the book does very well includes the photography, which even of works as well documented as the Brion Cemetery and the Castlevecchio, shows very different angles than what has typically been seen elsewhere. I also really appreciate the inclusion of diagrams indicating from where the images are taken.
The book is structured as a chronological survey of Scapra's work, with accompanying text explaining the brief history of the project, Scarpa's involvement (often done as a collaboration or in the case of posthumously completed buildings, the people involved), as well as the structure's current condition (to the extent of showing the Venezuela Pavilion's shocking dilapidation in hopes of spurring a restoration).
I only hope that this book provokes enough interest in Scarpa's work that a comprehensive book on his drawings is produced.

A massive book mainly covering the Brion Family Cemetery located near Venice. One of Scarpa's largest projects, this also happens to be the place where he was buried. The overview includes ten other Scarpa creations in Italy such as the Canova Museum and various Biennale pavilions. Hundreds of colour photos of interiors and exteriors, surface details, and surroundings. Colour drawings and photos all printed on thick grainy paper, sturdily bound in a linen hardback, and wrapped in a paper jacket. Similar in concept to Toto's earlier books on Barragan, Candela, and Shinohara.

I just finished perusing a copy of this book (owned by a friend) and came to a few conclusions. Scarpa is an amazing designer. His works are worthy of study and it would be nice if this book were in print so I could enjoy his work in the comfort of my own home.

            5 out of 5 stars A Great man.......2001-08-27

What a mind this man had. Carlo scarpa would without doubt be in anyone's top class list (those who know of him anyway) a truely inspiring book, fabuolous designs and the text to-boot. It contains a reasonable overview of the projects contained (some over several pages -which is always nice to see)great photo's, both of the building its interior and details to inspire. Talent oozing out of every design. A Great man and a sad loss.

i have not yet seen a definitive book which really communicates the art of this architects work. this book is a good value but lacks enough detail drawings or plan drawings although is has some. photography is good and again we need more on this architect.

              Book Description

Italian art glass of the 20th century represents a high point in the history of the medium. In this century, such legendary Muranese factories as Venini, Seguso and Barovier & Toso, among others, joined forces with major artists, architects, designers, and skilled glassworkers to renovate and expand the traditions of excellence that had been the hallmarks of Venetian glass for centuries. From experiments in new forms, colors, and techniques in the first decades of the century, through the golden years of Italian preeminence in the field at mid-century, to the influx of talented artists from other countries today, Venetian glasswork of the 20th century is a testament to creative spirit and artistic innovation. Presented at the American Craft Museum from fall 2000 through winter 2001, Venetian Glass: 20th Century Italian Glass from the Olnick Spanu Collection is one of the first comprehensive overviews of 20th century Italian glass art in the United States, and the first in this country to present a heretofore unknown private collection of Italian glass masterworks. The extraordinary design by Massimo Vignelli coupled with the stunning photographs by Luca Vignelli give life and texture to each piece. Responding to the dearth of publications about 20th century Italian glass art available in the US, this accompanying catalogue--featuring over 200 works--is certain to occupy a significant place in the current revival of interest in glasswork as an art form.

                Book Description

For almost 30 years, the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa collaborated with the well-known Venetian cabinetmaker Saverio Anfodillo to construct his designs. The Craft of Architecture documents their work together and gives a survey of Scarpa's oeuvre, one of the most outstanding of the 20th century. This publication is informed and instigated by the MAK's 1999 acquisition of a number of design drawings from the cabinetmaker's archives. These include architectural illustrations for the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona, built 1956-1964, the Galleria Querini Stampalia in Venice, built in 1961-1963, and the Tomba Brion in San Vito di Altivole, built in 1970-1978; as well as furniture design sketches and wooden models of design details, some for a table for composer Luigi Nono. The Craft of Architecture presents for the first time plans, sketches, blueprints, and models from this collection, complemented by photographs of Scarpa's most important built projects.

                    Book Description

In "The Big Christmas Giveaway Giveaway," Duckburg offers a fat prize to whoever does the most generous Christmas deed. Scrooge and Donald battle their usual tight-fisted ways in an effort to win the prize, but meet with unexpected competition from... the Beagle Boys! Next, in "Snow Duster," it's Gyro Gearloose's duty to thaw out a sports field fast. "Return of the Terror" brings back Tachyon Farflung, the master thief from outer space. And "Operation Vesuvius" tells of Scrooge's and Donald's efforts to neutralize sorceress Magica De Spell at Christmastime.
