Great for experts or beginners........1999-09-05
Moving to the south I was confronted with many different problems. This book not only helps to solve them but prevent them. The monthly tips are the best, so you can keep up with any projects or plan ahead. From correct pruning proceedures to sooty mold treatment that even a beginner can do. Also identifying all the different pests and the result of their infestations. Great little guide without alot of unnecessary information. Complete guide from bushes to trees to vines, growing seasons and mature sizes.

Florida Butterflys.......2007-05-13
This is the best book I have purchased for butterfys. It has great pictures of the butterflys as well as the caterpillars.
It gives you all the information needed to get your own butterfly garden set up.
When they say complete they mean it.......2005-09-19
I am just starting butterfly gardening and I found so much helpful information. On the other hand, my sister has been butterfly gardening for years, and still found the book helpful. It makes identification of butterflies and caterpillars easy and has many lavish illustrations of both the butterflies and the plants that attract them.
Great Book!.......2001-03-16
I have had this book for a year and I am always pulling it back out to help purchase butterfly plants and to ID catipillers and butterflys. Lots of excellent pictures of every stage of each Florida butterfly. Excellent lists of plants, both host and nectar. Great pictures of the plants. The only thing I have found missing is any info on when to expect the butterfly's in your garden.
Flordia Butterfly Gardening.......2000-04-18
This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in buuterfly gardening. Lots of helpful practical information. This book was recommended to me by Zane Greathouse who owns Greathouse Butterfly Farm.

Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money.......2006-09-02
This has to be the worst price guide I have ever seen. Forget about the values not even being close, the Ertl listing has so many errors its pathetic. Several of the cars listed are 1/43, Not 1/18, and are listed as 1/18, colors listed that were never made it goes on and on.
Sorry but it just don't cut it.
Standard guide to 1:18 Scale die-cast cars.......2004-02-25
After waiting for more than 9 months to get this book I was very disappointed after using Cast-car publication by Dan Boyd. The descriptions were very short and in most cases uninformative. I looked up 20 cars immediately from Ertl, Exact detail for Lane, Carousel, and Burago and Supercars (NO AutoArt) only to find 6 out of 20 and these are older than 2001 and could not be found. Very disappointing. All models did not have photos as Cast-Car Publications and the descriptions and details are sketchy or non existent, which is one of the values of the Cast-Car Publication. It does have more 1:18 scale models than any other Manual at this time and the $ VALUES that were assigned I found to be from a little low to extremely low even for an eBay auction. Some of the values assigned to very limited edition cars that even by todays standards are rare or hard to find are lower than what they sold new for and are bringing more than the values given to them in this publication. For example 1969 Grumpy's Toy Camaro SSC, 1969 Yenko Nova #1 Issue, Yenko Camaros #'s 1 & #2 are all listed at a ridiculous $60.00, the GMP Grumpys Toy Nova is also listed at $60.00, and Lanes 1967 Grumpy's Toy is listed as a $60.00 value. I WOULD BUY ANY OF THESE AT THE VALUE STATED IN THIS GUIDE AS MANY AS I COULD GET MY HANDS ON AND MAKE GREAT MARK-UP. WHERE DID THEY GET THESE VALUES??? These are only a few of the many glaring errors I found in an initial 30 minute review. Except for photos in the guide I found it exteremely lacking in why I made the purchase. I'm patiently waiting for the next issue of Cast-car which will include many more manufacturers than just Ertl.

Customer Reviews:
I wish I hadn't bought this!.......2000-02-03
I must say that I really regret buying this book. After waiting anxiously to receive it I was, upon opening it, almost immediately disappointed. It turned out to be an alphabetical listing of companies which produced die-cast models, with a brief (1 paragraph in some cases) description of company history. While it does list each model produced by the various companies and offer a valuation, it fails to describe the models in any detail. Therefore, a prospective collector has virtually no useful information to go on. It doesn't even tell you the various colours the models have been released in, or any details which might differenciate one model from another.
As for photos. This is another area where this book falls down. Very few graphics; once again - a real let down.
All in all, a very poor showing. Save your money and buy a different book!
Excellent overview of ALL diecast cars ever made.......1998-12-04
This book is not a complete listing of any single make of diecast car (although it does come close for a few makes) but rather a list of all diecast manufacturers that have ever existed with a representative sampling of prices and photos.

The original slot car guide is still the defining book........2001-06-23
While the book has not been substantially updated, it covers cars that were primarily made over twenty years ago. This guide, as far as I know, was the very first of it's kind. To date, the book is still current as the subject HO scale Aurora cars were last produced over two decades ago. Many other people have compiled "me too" listings of the slot cars covered in this book, but none of the other books have the level of professional photography or copy as is found in this book. In fact, some of the other publications are nothing more than computer printed color copies retailing for the same price or more. The author of this book attends numerous trade shows and swap meets, he is truly a wealth of knowledge for the so called experts and begginers to the collecting scene alike. Forget Mr. Aurora, Slot Car Johnny (The Author) has a well composed, concise pictorial guide that is unbiased and informative. It is the definitive guide for the HO scale Aurora slot car collector / enthusiast. You will enjoy this book for many years to come.
basics only.......2000-12-08
I thought the book did not give a good guide to pricing or to condision. The book seemed to basic with not enough information to really be useful.Does not cover enough of the cars made and colors. This is just a quick look at some cars someone owns in my view. It is OK if you can not get anything else or can not afford a better book. The book is worth looking through for the fun of it. OK not great

Book Description
A New York Times Notable Book of the YearA Publishers Weekly Best Book of 1995Harriet Rose, twenty-six, is an American photographer just winning recognition for her work. A travel fellowship brings her to visit her best friend and former roommate, Anne Gordon, in Switzerland. In an ongoing letter to her boyfriend, Harriet reports on strange developments in Anne's life, most notably her affair with a much older married man, which seems to be leading to a disastrous conclusion. Before she can rescue Anne, events take a series of unexpected turns, and Harriet must reexamine her own life and past, and come to terms with the difficulties and possibilities of human relationships.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2005-08-20
I liked the beginning of the book; Harriet's observations about Geneva, the journal writing, fun to read. But at some point I thought the protagonist speaking in the first person might say, 'Oh Benedict, I saw the meaning of life reflected in a lily,' and then , 'Oops, I farted.' I exaggerate, but there was a weird sort of prosaic self indulgence displayed in this novel.
Anne was mysterious--I wanted to know her, but I never got to know Anne, the only character who might be interesting. Victor was okay but very icky and it is not used to full affect. There is too much boring flashback to the US suburbs and dead mothers ('pity us!')--I felt compelled to see Anne but the first person narrator takes all the attention for herself, even when written in the third person, and it becomes intolerable. Even when Anne hangs herself in Geneva the narrtor makes it all about herself. 'Harriet the brave,' her boyfriend says to her. Um, what about a few words for the recently deceased, who was only 26?
Anne's bereaved father is also (and unbelievably!!!) more concerned about Harriet, as the author notes, and even sends her tons of dough for a lovely Italian holiday, with no grieving!
I felt sad reading it. Sad for such insensitivity. And disappointed becasue there was potential in the beginning. No wonder Anne kills herself, I thought. Who wouldn't, with people like this in their life?
Maybe not spectacular, but a good read nonetheless.......2004-07-10
Harriet Rose is in Geneva, combining a travel fellowship with visiting her best friend Anne, who had rather recently moved to Geneva to be with her married, much older lover, Victor. What Harriet finds is an Anne unrecognizable from her best friend and former roommate. . . an Anne so dominated by Victor and his subtle (and some not so subtle) controls that she ceases to have an identity of her own and exists merely as Victor's mistress.
Harriet desperately wants to rescue Anne from what she perceives as a harmful relationship. Anne is uncertain as to her to own desires and motives. Victor, the forceful former-Auschwitz survivor, has his own agenda. This odd triangle reaches the point-of-no-return as the reader waits to see just what will happen.
The novel is written in three parts. Book One is a journal of sorts, in which Harriet records her concerns for Anne, along with her observations of Anne and Victor. She writes this journal in letters addressed to her boyfriend, Benedict, and uses it as a sounding board for her concerns and frustrations. This is by far the best part of the book. Harriet's observations are witty and scintillating, and at the same time piercing, as she tries to penetrate through Anne's "strange new mistress/person".
Books Two and Three are told in third person. Book Two fleshes out Harriet's personality by giving her family background and childhood stories, cumulating in a situation not dissimilar from the one she faces now. Book Three picks up where Harriet's journal leaves off and follows Anne and Victor and Harriet to the conclusion.
I was disappointed by Anne's character. Even knowing that her true personality was being overshadowed by Victor, I never caught so much as a glimpse of "her". She appeared two-dimensional and I did not find myself as concerned for her as I should. Harriet, on the other hand, was a delightful character, full of life and enthusiasm and spirit. I enjoyed her journal immensely.
Despite my complaints, this is a solidly good book and worth a read.
Don't believe the naysayers: this is a great book.......2004-06-20
Photographer Harriet Rose, in Geneva for a month on a travel fellowship, is staying with her former roommate Anne, who had left their Greenwich Village apartment to follow her recently acquired married lover to Switzerland. Harriet finds Anne, this "strange new mistress-person" she's become, wholly changed from the woman she knew in New York, smothering under the demands of an oppressive relationship with her Victor, a fastidious, subtly abusive, toeless Auschwitz survivor. In a journal addressed to--but not necessarily intended to be read by--her new boyfriend Benedict, Harriet chronicles the absurd and dark relationship she is forced to witness at close quarters. Happily, she is an excellent observer of minutiae and a witty reporter. Of a dinner out with the unhappy couple, for example, Harriet writes:
"'I will take the steak,' Victor said to the waiter--rather imperiously, I thought. Why did it bother me so? I will take the steak. I have no toes, so I will not merely have, as others do, but I will take. I survived Auschwitz, so I can cheat on my wife and I will take the steak."
The first part of Katharine Weber's Objects in Mirror are Closer than they Appear, then, is epistolary, the stories of Anne and Harriet told by the latter in a series of lengthy, nicely written letters. In the remaining two-thirds of the book, related in third-person prose, Harriet's back story is fleshed out--her privileged but profoundly sad childhood, with its parallels to her current situation. Finally, the story returned to the present day, Anne's relationship with the enigmatic Victor meets its greatest challenge.
Objects in Mirror are Closer than they Appear is a wonderful book, layered, poignant, and beautifully written, and it comes highly recommended.

Penetrating and Unusual.......2004-06-09
It is a sign of the quiet brilliance of Ms. Weber's narrative skills that the people of of this book entered my heart through the reflections they created, passing through different periods of time. Unusually structured to draw its readers into deeper perceptions and feelings, this novel is a luminously lit journey. I can think of few other writers working today who can approximate the depth Ms. Weber plunges through and still sustain such warmth, humanness, and wit. I knew these people as if, at the end, I was looking in the mirror at myself. I can think of no higher value for literature than the achievement of this kind of empathy and engagement from a reader. It is a beautiful and ingenious book.
A wonderful first novel from a talented author.......2003-08-22
Katharine Weber's first novel set the stage for what is becoming a superb literary career. From Objects in the Mirror and The Music Lesson to her thoughtful and comprehensive book reviews for the New York Times, I've learned to trust Ms. Weber's writing. She never lets me down. In this novel, she takes one character, connects this character to the lives of absolutely dissimilar individuals, and weaves a story that pulls it all together into one dramatic conclusion. She's not teaching in one of the country's finest writing programs for nothing!
Book Description
Comprehensive, clear, well-illustrated, and concise! This outstanding volume provides a systematic overview of the process of costume design for the stage, presenting beginning designers with the fundamentals upon which to build their costume skills. Readers are exposed to a broad range of theatrical literature through illustrations, references in the text, and pertinent quotes from plays. They are also taught how to analyze plays from the costume designer's perspective. In addition, readers learn how to draw and render costume sketches and how to apply different design principles to specific types of costumes. The costume designer's art lies in effective interpretation, collaboration, and execution. The Magic Garment makes this process accessible and, with lively detail and a wealth of illustrations, brings the exciting world of costume design to life.
Customer Reviews:
It's a great beginning.......2001-03-17
Having taught costume design for a number of years, the one thing I can say with certainty is that no book can do everything. I've used the text for a number of years and find it helpful...especially her approach to analyzing the text (I still use her checklists myself). However, a lot of my students are intimidated by some of the illustrations/examples of work. They don't know how to approach sketching for themselves and there are a couple of other texts that are more helpful in aiding in that particular process. Possibly there could be more graphic illustrations of getting from A to D (show us B & C) instead of just the beginning and the end result. The historical research sources and the historical costume outline are good - again some of my students think that she provides a finite list of resources and as with any historical survey the attention is to avoid variations and or anything beyond high fashion. Generally, a strong introductory text but needs supplementary materials (as does any book). No one has complained about the text; that's a good sign.
Key to the World of Costume Design.......2000-08-17
As a college student I was first introduced to the book The Magic Garment: Principles of Costume Design by Rebecca Cunningham. The book is simple and consise while providing a wealth of valuable information for the novice or professional. I enjoyed this book so much that I have choosen to use it as the text book for my costume design class. This will be my first teaching experience; however, I feel confident that this book will enable me to help my class understand the art of costume design.
