Best cookbook I've ever bought.......2006-10-22
Simple ingredients, unlike others that send you scurrying to specialty markets for rare and expensive ingredients. Most recipes are fairly quick and un-complicated, but there are also a few doozies that take a couple of days to make.
Actually makes me look forward to cooking at the end of the day and every meal has tasted like fine restaurant fare.
GRRRREAT!.......2004-01-27
This book has some of the best recipes I have ever tried. People ask for copies of recipes I've cooked for dinners and I just give the book as a gift. There are quick easy recipes and more complex that take a little more time, but I have NEVER had a bad result. The cookbook is very southern and contains recipes submitted by Savannians and, I believe, the proceeds go to benefit St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah, GA. If you're questioning buying this book... GET IT! It's Fantastic!
Book Description
The stylish little books in our new Compact Design Portfolio series put great classic and contemporary design within everyone's grasp. Launching with four leading designers of the twentieth century--Richard Sapper, Michael Graves, Eileen Gray, and Jean Prouve--these exciting new books defy the idea that design is inaccessible. Each book contains an introductory essay addressing the designer's life and work, penned by a distinguished design writer with real knowledge of and fresh enthusiasm for the designer at hand. Subsequent pages dynamically illustrate numerous key works in photographs and sketches--from Sapper's famous Tizio lamp to Graves's Target line, Prouve's pioneering metal furniture to Gray's Rioli desk. This series will extend into future seasons with more titles featuring an eclectic mix of international design heroes. In an irresistible small format packed with images and useful information, the Compact Design Portfolio books are affordable enough to collect the entire series. At long last, here's the perfect introduction to the influential designers who changed the face of contemporary design.
Customer Reviews:
cute, litte, charming.... disservice to Sapper.......2004-06-17
Ever wondered what the equivalent of CliffsNotes would be for design(ers)? Wander no more for this book may be just that. Michael Webb, the author of text portion does an excellent job in capturing the essence of Sapper as a creative designer; one is only left wanting more. The photos are disconnected from the text, on purpose, and too small.
Not sure about the rationale for why the editors announce this book as part in a series. Other than illustrating the concept of unsustainable design, (i.e. sloppy marketing) which Sapper himself shuns, I find the whole concept lacking. I wish these installments were all pulled together in a single release.

Great book!.......2007-08-14
Easy instructions - beautiful pictures - pieced & appliqued blocks - good tips - great value
Thimbleberries Essential.......2005-11-28
If you love Thimbleberries, you'll find this book to be an essential component in your quilting library. Although several of the patterns are of the traditional design we all love about Thimbleberries, Lynette explores diverse ways to make these quilts uniquely yours.
Very nice designs, with a caveat.......2005-10-13
When I can, I take a book out of the library before I commit my hard-earned money to a quilting book. Some books, after all, are great for read-once inspiration. Other books simply demand that you get your own copy, because it's earned a spot on your shelf.
I've been working with The Thimbleberries Guide for Weekend Quilters for the last couple of weeks, courtesy of the Scottsdale Library, and I'm just finishing up one of the quilt projects. I'm probably going to order my own copy of the book; but the key word is "probably" (as opposed to "definitely, I'm doing it now!"). It has some compelling features... though it's not perfect, either.
Let's start with the good stuff. The 25 projects in this book are mostly full size (double and queen-sized) quilts, though there are several smaller quilts (such as the one I chose, a table runner). Most have an accompanying project, such as pillowcases to go with the quilt, or a fabric-trimmed rug.
Not all of them are gorgeous, but none of them are lame. The designs are primarily using traditional blocks, such as flying geese, though a few projects also incorporate applique. While the quilts aren't labeled for expected skill, they all seemed pretty straightforward to this still-a-beginner.
One thing I *love* about the book -- and which earned it a star all on its own -- is that each project is shown with a color photo and matching quilt diagram, _plus_ another picture showing the same quilt done in different colors. That works wonders, when you're trying to visualize how this quilt will look with the fabrics you already have in your stash.
Each project is laid out in sections, to accomodate the premise of the busy weekend quilter who can grab time in small chunks. That's a strengh of the book, but it also contributes to its weakness. (At least for me; it may work exactly the way you prefer.)
Every project gives a complete list of fabric you'll need (1/2 yard gold print, 5/8 yard red print, etc.); that's standard. However, most quilt books have you cut all the fabric in one fell swoop, so you can get done with that task and put away the rotary cutter. Instead, this book treats each part of the project (cutting the blocks, making the border, etc.) as a separate project. You cut out the fabric for the blocks, then piece them. THEN you cut out the fabric for the quilt center, and piece that. Then you cut for the border, etc.
If you're really working on the weekend-quilter schedule -- just a little bit at a time -- maybe this works for you. In my case, I found it irritating. I had to leave my entire setup spread up (on the dining room table, as it happens) over the course of most of a week, as I wanted to get this silly little table runner done (in addition to working 60 hours a week). I'd rather have done ALL the cutting, then tackled the piecing. Which, of course, I could certainly have done, if I had realized the non-standard way the book presents the project. Instead, I kept being surprised that I had to cut stuff AGAIN! If you know this ahead of time, it may be less annoying; you'll expect it.
Overall, however, this is a very good book. The author is cognizant that you have limited time, and has designed a book full of attractive, do-able quilts that you can be proud of.
Wonderful Projects!.......2005-06-15
This book is full of fast and easy and well as advanced projects which are all absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend this book to beginning quilters as well as advanced.
Dangerous book! It changed my life!.......2003-01-15
For years I had toyed with the idea of making quilts but I was always deterred by the huge amount of work it would involve. I bought many quilting books and drooled over the photos, thinking that one day I would take the plunge.
After setting eyes on The Guide For Weekend Quilters, I knew I could go from wishing to be a quilter to being one. It wasn't just the simple instructions and the lush, rich palette of colours that Lynette uses. It was the snippets of advice and insights into the quilting lives that crop up in short sections written by the people who work with her. It made me realise that quilters weren't superwomen - they all had busy lives, but they fitted their hobby in because they loved it.
Since reading this book in early 2000, I have made 10 quilts and just keep going! The instructions are well illustrated and undaunting. Lynette relies on use of layout and colour rather than complicated patterns so they can be put together quickly. Also, although definately "country", they avoid that "twee" feel of so many county style designs.
This book changed my life - you should let it change yours!
Book Description
Inspired by the natural patterns of the countryside in all seasons, five expert quilt makers bring you 26 glorious quilts, including bed quilts, quilted throws, and wall hangings. Most of them can be made in a weekend; a few require two.
Customer Reviews:
The Weekend Quilter.......2006-08-16
I think this is a great book. I am a real get-it-done-quickly quilter as I don't have the amount of spare time I would like to make quilts, so this book is excellent for me. Very good for beginners but also great ideas for experienced quilters. Clear instructions take the brain-work out of construction. I have one other of her books and am keen to increase my library with more that she has edited. AAA+++
Quick Quilting Ideas.......2005-10-18
This is a lovely book of ideas for small (often about 60" square), easily made quilts. The instructions and illustrations are clear and thorough. Some of the patterns are unusual with an oriental character and feature sashiko quilting, others are very traditional. Also included is information on dying your own fabric for a truly personal touch. While this may not be the book for everyone, it is probably a good investment for the quilter who is looking for inspiration and help. The projects can be done with a reasonable amount of time and effort. They are not the one-a-year, competition-style large quilt.
New ideas from British quilters.......2004-03-21
This book is a collection of relatively easy quilting projects from five different British quilters. I liked it a lot because the ideas and methods are somewhat different fromr those found in many U.S. quilting books. I'm not sure if I would make any of the quilts exactly as shown in the book (the directions are very good, so you could if you wanted to!), but I did get a lot of great new ideas for projects.
Not What I Had In Mind.......2001-07-14
I found this book very disappointing. Nowhere in the description does it state that a large number of the designs are ethnic-inspired (Asian and American-Indian). The designs are easy to understand if this is what you are looking for, but the description of the book implied that the designs are more traditional and this is not the case. All of the patterns are simple - too simple. There is nothing to them. And the color schemes chosen are not attractive. If this were the only quilting book I owned, I would probably not be quilting for long!
Exceptional Quilting Book.......2000-11-10
This is an exceptional quilting book because it features a number of beautiful quilts, AND the directions for the quilts are easy to understand and follow. Instructions are clear enough that even a beginner could tackle most projects, and the beautiful photographs make you want to! Great book.
Product Description
Great weekend quilting projects that will make you feel like you have accomplished something!
Customer Reviews:
Quick & easy & one of the best quilting books I have!.......2004-10-24
I started quilting two years ago and since that time I have made quite a few quilts. Easy ones, hard ones and I have wanted to do more complex quilts. At least I thought I did until now. I don't remember how I found this particular quilt book but I love it! The quilts are easy, especially using the "big" blocks in the projects. The directions are easy, step by step in simple terms. The color options are limitless and I am having a ball making these quilts. I have just started one for my father for Christmas in plaids and it is beautiful. I know I wil get another one done, just in time!
I also love scrappy quilts and there are plenty of options for wonderful projects.
I just can't say enough about this book.
If you like "simple" but beautiful, then this book is for you!
Fantastic book.......2004-04-29
This book is helping me sew my first quilt. It is a wonderful guide, and has great diagrams, explanations, and quilt designs. I'm thrilled with how easy it is to use, and with the way the quilt is turning out. I highly, highly recommend the book.

Book Description
Natural stone is one of the most expressive materials on earth. No two slabs are alike, yet every piece is unrivaled for warmth, strength, and resilience. Today, natural stone is the hottest trend for interiors-whether as a stylish tiled floor, a dramatic fireplace surround, or a kitchen counter that will last a lifetime.
Hundreds of photographs provide inspiration for the myriad ways to use this oldest of building materials, be it granite, marble, limestone, slate, or travertine. And the wide variety of designs featured in Stone prove that it is easy to use it anywhere in your own home, even on a tight budget.
Stone is a comprehensive and easy-to-use guide to bringing natural stone into the home. Color charts reveal the wide range of tones available. A buyer's guide matches rooms and lifestyles with the right stone. Other tips help with budgeting and finding the right installer-or doing it yourself.

Covers every aspect of stone .......2006-11-17
This is a great book. it will give you detailed information about the stone types that you can use in your house and great photos. i'm in the stone flooring business and this book helps my customers to visualize the final look of the stone they choose from my showroom floor. it also has a section with patterns so you dont have to figure out how to lay stones in different sizes to make a pattern.
Fantastic, Helpful, Informative Book about using Stone in your Home.......2006-06-09
We are considering having our kitchen remodeled and definitely want to replace the current Corian with some type of stone. This book covers stone used in kitchens and baths. Besides the gorgeous photographs, the book includes lots of helpful tips in helping you chose the right stone for your project. Each photo is described with caption of what the stone is, including the pattern or color. The chapters include the stone kitchen, bath, floor and architectural stone. What is really nice is that it addresses various possible focal points, such as the stone vent hood in the kitchen or a beautiful stone fireplace.
The book encompasses multiple styles, designs and patterns for counters, floors, backsplashes and walls. For the photography and ideas alone, this book is worth the price but it has so much more. It includes tips and pointers for using stone in various places. For example, on page 66, there is a side bar that has Ideas for the Shower. It includes tips like "When chosing a polished granite for the shower walls, keep in mind that water spots are magnified on a polished surface."
This books covers all kinds of natural stone: limestone, granite, travertine, marble, slate. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
I love this book!!.......2005-10-13
This book describes the nature of various types of stones and the recommended usage inside and outside the home. I've used this book as a guide to show my local stone dealer what type of stones I'm looking for. And also used it to illustrate the concept of my dream home to my Interior Designer, she understood immediately without us having to go through many rounds of interview to get it right. As a result, my dream home is now almost complete with stones from all over the world, marbles from Spain, Italy, Iran.... granite from Norway and Indonesia... coral stones, tumblestones, slates, and many more.... Wonderful pictures and illustrations, I'd recommend this book to anyone! Suitable for modern Asian homes too!
Excellent Stone Resource & Nice Pictures.......2005-08-29
I work for a natural stone retailer in Texas, and this book gives me ideas for customers. Many of my store's clients want to take this book home or buy it. I don't let them take it home of course; I suggest that they buy one on Amazon.com.
In my opinion, I think it makes a good coffee table book as well, since when people are waiting in my showroom, I see them browsing through this book. I wish there were more books like this one.
honed or tumbled?.......2005-05-17
This book is not only a great resource guide for those new to designing with stones, but also fun to look at and inspirational. I found ideas for the bathroom, kitchen, and even for a staircase.
