Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Essentially boring.......2006-09-12

A very 'pretty' book but nothing very new in terms of recipes. And I didn't find the recipes very exciting or innovative. Almost more a 'coffee table' book than a cookbook.

4 out of 5 stars I wholly disagree..........2001-04-17

I found the book's recipes sound (some I would make, others not in a million years--much like any cookbook), but the author really outdoes herself on presentation. You could buy the book strictly for aesthetic tips and get your money's worth.

1 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2001-01-26

I made five "recipes" from the book for a party, and not one was remotely fabulous. I will look through the book one more time to see if there's anything that looks interesting, and if not, take it to the resale shop (probably with a note that I wasn't impressed).

      Book Description

The table saw is the cornerstone of any woodworking shop, and this book in its first edition quickly became the standard reference. Written by the recognized authority on the subject, the book explains how to choose the proper saw and use it safely, and covers all basic operations including ripping, crosscutting, and handling large stock. Included are discussions of innovations in table saw design and new accessories. With almost 300 color photos, this totally revised version of The Table Saw Book is the top reference on the subject.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Table Saw Book.......2007-07-05

While the box covers the basics of a table saw, I was expecting a broader section on the design of jigs for use with a table saw. The jigs provided, however, are the basic ones commonly used.

3 out of 5 stars Ups and Downs.......2007-06-19

After reading all of the positive reviews, I was a bit disappointed after securing my copy of Mehler's Table Saw Book. Maybe my expectations were a little high, but I was left wanting more. I was hoping for something similar to Hylton's Woodworking with the Router.

The first two chapters (Introduction to and Buying a Table Saw) can be completely skipped by anybody who already owns or is familiar with a table saw. I felt Mehler spent WAY too much time touting European saws. These pages would've been much more useful on topics more relevant to most of us. I also wasn't particularly impressed with the Crosscutting chapter.

On the bright side, the book does contain some valuable information. The chapter on Safety is excellent. Mehler also consists of some good tips on maintaining your table saw. I liked the chapter on cutting various joints. Lastly, the book includes very good color photos and black-and-white diagrams.

Pros: Cheap, good newbie information, alignment and maintenance tips
Cons: Too much pre-buying info, infatuation with Euro saws

Recommendation: If new to table saws, this book is great. However, for experienced woodworkers, I'd look elsewhere.

      5 out of 5 stars Getting Started...........2006-11-26

The Table Saw Book was a great book to read as I began to get into doing some basic woodworking. It was extremely clear and an easy read. However, I found the information very good and on a level that I could understand. I would recommend to anyone who is just getting started in woodworking to read this book first. You will find that you refer back to it time and again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever.......2006-03-19

This book is simply excellent. I can't say enough about it. The one slight negative thing I could say is that the last chapter does not read as well as the rest of the book. Reading the last chapter you almost get the impression that it is written by a different person or that they felt they were rushed and didn't do as good as the rest of the book.

Overall though I just cannot believe how this book reads so well, easy, straight forward, no nonsense. I wish more books were like this.

1 out of 5 stars What More Could You Want.......2006-03-15

I'm another one of those that took shop in school and until been unable to assemble a home shop. This is a great reference and brush up on safety. I find it helpful as I enter the market for a table saw.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars I read this..........2006-12-30

This book is one of the best for beginners. It goes into detail on choosing a saw, accessories, and teaching you some basic and advanced techniques, maintaining and troubleshooting. The last 30 pages are seven projects you can work on. Almost 90% of the book goes into the major topics, and the most information is regarding saw techniques and making jigs and fixtures.

But keep in mind this is a beginner's book, nothing too fancy. There are other books for that. I also like Jim Toplin's Table Saw Magic too.

        4 out of 5 stars informative book.......2005-10-20

This book takes you thru the basics of using a scroll saw. It has a great section of blade anatomy, types of saws. Good reference book for people who are new to the scroll saw. Written in plain english so everybody can understand.

My experiences with this book are great.
After reading it my skills with the table saw improved a great deal, specially because I was looking for accuracy tips.
No jigs in the whole book are dimensioned but at least for me were enough information to solve almost all my problems making big pieces of furniture
I strongly recommend this book if you want to learn table saw usage, jig making, and safety practices.
        Good Reading!!! , best practice!!!

I can't put this book down. I also bought "The Table Saw Book : Completely Revised and Updated" by Kelly Mehler. Mehler's book is visually appealing but this book is "Meat and Potatoes" and gives the novice a firm foundation to effective table saw use.

4 out of 5 stars The Table Saw Book observations.......2005-09-10

The Table Saw Book is an excellent book for experienced woodworkers as well as beginners. I was pleased that the author did not assume that the reader knew all of the buzz words and described the points clearly. It was written in a manner that was most interesting and a difficult book to put down.

It would have been helpful if the pictures relating to the articles could have been kept more near; sometimes they did get separated pretty far. On the other hand, the pictures and diagrams were very large and clear which was a welcome feature. Clearly, it was impossible to have it both ways, and I think he made the better choice.

I was also pleased that the author did not seem to favor one brand of table saw over another, but did point out the advantages and shortcomings of many. He even included tips on using the ShopSmith unit that so many of us small home shops have. The extensive information regarding saw blades and equipment care was most valuable as was the information regarding fine tuning table saws.

The book contained many tips, clear and complete diagrams, many safety precautions and reminders, and a large number of home-made accessories that one could build for themselves. This value in itself was worth many times over the small cost of the book. I will be keeping this book and using it often for a reference.

        4 out of 5 stars Solid book..........2005-07-07

Though dated, this provides good solid information on the basics of table saws and their usage.

        4 out of 5 stars Excellent--especially when combined with Mehler's book.......2005-04-07

This is an excellent, very detailed introduction to the table saw. B&W photos are sharp and clear, and the explations are tightly written. You can tell that the author clearly enjoys not only working in the shop but helping others to share in that enjoyment.

While the book is almost 20 years older than Kelly Mehler's book of the same name, it's still current and valuable. Mehler's book is visually more engaging but just doesn't have the level of detail included in De Christoforo's book.

I bought both Mehler's and De Christoforo's books. I find myself referring to both of them--Mehler for high-level information and De Christoforo's for more in-depth explanations.

                  Book Description

An acclaimed interior designer and author of the Los Angeles Times bestseller Modern Glamour, Kelly Wearstler presents sumptuous photographs of one of her most incredible design achievements yet -- her family home, the Hillcrest Estate

With her impeccable taste, fearless technique, and discerning eye for color, shape, pattern, and texture, Kelly Wearstler's status as an internationally acclaimed interior designed is unparalleled. With buoyant ease, she will confidently cover walls in iconic graphics, select a captivating animal figure as a focal point, or add a lush expanse of contrasting color to an otherwise monochromatic space. Combining grace and flawless skill, she can change a simple room into a work of art. Her home is no exception. Domicilium Decoratus reveals the most private and challenging undertaking of her career: her family's timeless, astonishingly designed residence.

Domicilium Decoratus is a limited-edition book, each copy hand signed by the author, and features breathtaking photography of Wearstler's most treasured design achievement. Readers' imaginations can wander through this personal haven -- from its fourteen-foot ceilings and windows, walls of glass and layers of warm, opulent color, to its witty details, sophisticated materials and finishes, and ornate collection of artifacts gathered from five continents over many years of travel. Hillcrest Estate is a tour de force, confirming Wearstler's place as an interior designer of consummate skill and singular flair. Domicilium Decoratus discloses her personal masterpiece -- a private and enchanting domestic hideaway.

Kelly Wearstler is the author of Modern Glamour and the founder of the Los Angeles architectural interior design firm kwid (Kelly Wearstler Interior Design). Her designs for the trendsetting Viceroy resorts from California to the Caribbean; such taste-making hotels as Maison 140 and Avalon; unique office, retail, and leisure spaces, including BG restaurant and lounge in Manhattan's Bergdorf Goodman; and upscale residences such as the Trousdale Estate have been profiled in House and Garden, House Beautiful, Interior Design, Elle Décor, Vogue, and W. Wearstler is also designer of her own kwid line of furnishings and accessories. She lives in Beverly Hills with her husband, hotelier Brad Korzen, and their sons.

                  5 out of 5 stars absolutely delicious.......2007-08-04

i loved modern glamour but domicilium decoratus is my favorite. physically, the book is well made, the photos are simply beautiful. every single page is a pleasure - the colors, the details, the objects...are just mouthwatering and they were all put together in a thoughtful way with taste, style, design sensibility, intelligence and humor. i have to disagree with reviewers who dislike kelly's ball gowns and prentending to be domestic.... i especially love those photos as they inject great humor and great joy of life into this book(whether it was intended or not). with almost no text, the pictures in this book worths a million words.

Brilliant display of Kelly Wearstler's style and aesthetic put to work in her own personal space. I am always fascinated to see inside designers'(that I like) homes. This one is really interesting and fanciful. Wearstler also enjoys shoving herself into the pictures which I think is fun. She is beautiful and obviously loves to dress up and glam it on. How can you not love her?

I loved her first book and was excited to receive the second but I was very disappointed. I quickly sold it. When the first book had various ideas, this one only shows a few rooms from her own estate. The house is set up to sell her as a decorator and she poses in various gowns on every 10th page. Sort of blah.

                  2 out of 5 stars don't waste your money!!.......2006-03-25

While I very much enjoyed Miss Wearstler's first book, I found Domicilium Decoratus to be borderline obnoxious. Rather than show great decorating, the book focused mainly on close up shots of objects in her house that took up the whole page.In addition, I feel that as the viewer of the book I do not need to see fifteen entire pages of Miss Wearstler dressed in ball gowns pretending to be domestic.

5 out of 5 stars delicious eye candy.......2006-03-11

                  I loved modern glamour.
Kelly Wearstler's sleek design is truly inspirational,
but this new book takes you to places one can only dream of-
bold, dramatic, luxurious, and exotic is the only way to
describe her ever evolving style. At first I was a little shocked
because it wasn't the glamourous 3 color minimalism I was expecting,- but after studying the pages over and over for the past few weeks I see how brilliant she truly is, and why she is one of the most progressive, sought after designers today.
