A great classic - somewhat dated.......2001-08-14
I have had Dione's book for 15 years on my shelves, and have consulted it many times. The recipes are all very classical, and require, in most cases, long, intricate, preparations. There was a time when I would look up her recipe first before composing my own in the kitchen (mine would be faster and easier...), just to make sure that I would not miss an essential part.
In the end, over the past 6 or 7 years I have progressively dropped that habit and now refer to newer compendia. In most cases, Dione' recipes are too complex, often for no reason (my simplifications did not seem to make them any worse). In addition, there are many original ingredients that could not be obtained in Dione's time, but are now quite common: her substitutions don't make as much sense as they used to. I think that this book is most useful for someone who would want a reference text on how people used to cook French in the US.
Ordinary French recipes with real flair.......1997-12-09
A cookbook that gives exceptional treatment to ordinary recipes, French or American. Dishes are mostly from the 19th century, using tricks that originated in the country and found their way to the city for authentic French style. Dione Lucas adds a special flair to the recipes that is sure to delight your guests. The book also includes instructions in many techniques that make brilliant French chefs out of all of us.

Product Description
Any on-screen schmuck can take down a wolfman with a silver bullet. It takes a certain kind of hero to hoist that wolfman overhead into an airplane spin, follow with a body slam, drop an atomic elbow across his mangy neck, leg-lock him until he howls, and pin his furry back to the mat for a three-count. It takes a Mexican masked wrestler. Add a few half-naked vampire women, Aztec mummies, mad scientists, evil midgets from space, and a goateed Frankenstein monster, and you have just some of the elements of Mexican masked wrestler and monster movies, certainly among the most bizarre, surreal and imaginative films ever produced. This filmography features some of the oddest cinematic showdowns ever concoctedMexican masked wrestlers battling monsters, evil geniuses and other neer-do-wells, be it in caves, cobwebbed castles or in the ring. From the 1950s to the 1970s, these movies were staples of Mexican cinema, combining action, horror, sex, science fiction and comedy into a bizarre amalgam aimed to please the whole family. Chapters examine the roots of the phenomenon, including the hugely popular masked wrestling scene and the classic Universal horror films from which Mexican filmmakers stole without compunction. Subsequent chapters focus on El Santo, Blue Demon, and Mil Mascaras, the three most prominent masked wrestlers; wrestling women; other less prominent masked wrestlers; and the insane mish-mash of monsters pitted against the heroes. Each chapter includes background information and a full filmography, and a wide assortment of striking illustrations-posters, lobby cards and other graphic material, some better than the movies they advertised-accompany the text.
Customer Reviews:
Bobb Cutter Cuts Through The Lucha Crap .......2006-08-25
This book is the bible for fans of masked wrestling films! "Bobb" Cotter's writing style is informal and fun to read yet highly informative. His book is literally crammed with every possible tidbit of information on the wrestlers, directors, producers, actors, and actresses that made the golden age of Mexican psychotronicness possible. He also seems to have a genuine fondness for the personalities behind the cameras; with the possible exception of Doyle Green's for more difficult Mexploitation Cinema, this book is your average fan's only chance to catch a glimpse at what went on behind the scenes at an El Santo film.
Filmography is also an invaluable tool in figuring out what Lucha Libre film's NOT to buy. There are after all over 100 of them! As a fan of the genre who (for the most part) enjoys watching the films, this book has helped me to spend my hard earned pesos on fun films like El Castillo de las Momias de Guanajuato and avoid turkeys like El Aguila Real. Consider this book an investment if you're going to collect some of the films.
If you're only going to buy a single book on the topic, make it this one.
This guy sees them, so you won't have to..........2005-09-20
My first exposure to Mexican wrestling movies came from seeing a still in a magazine that showed a match in which one wrestler had a spider for a hand. Any genre that can go that far is worth exploring, and this book does a great job of providing an overview of Mexican wrestling and monster movies. The author has spent a lot of time studying these films, and it shows in the detail. In addition, the subject matter is treated affectionately, rather than as something to be derided. Unfortunately, actually watching these movies can be a chore. They are a lot like Japanese monster films: the buildup is a lot better than the payoff, the acting is atrocious, and you find yourself marking time until the next wrestling match. That this author was able to watch so many films and write about them so entertainingly is laudable. Whether they'd compel me to watch some again...I'm not so sure. I'm content in knowing that I have the best sourcebook available if I ever engaged in a late night debate on Mexican wrestling movies.

Book Description
Masks of Mexico is a state-by-state guide for collectors and general folk art enthusiasts to learn about the types of masked dances still carried out in Mexico's Indian and mestizo communities today. Close to one-hundred color photos of authenticated masks from the collection of the Museum of International Folk\ Art are presented, including finely carved pieces from the 19th century to simple face coverings made in the past ten years. The masked ceremonies are brought to life with documentary photos showing masqueraders acting out their roles.
Customer Reviews:
An attractive and valuable new reference on Mexican masks........1999-04-27
The author assigned herself the task of publishing a representative sample of masks from the many Mexican states with strong traditions of mask use, drawing from the previously underdisplayed collections of the Museum of International Folk Art, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The book brings together a number of interesting photographs of masked dancers, to augment the excellent mask photos. Some of these have appeared in other books on Mexican masking, accessible or inaccessible, others are fresh and new, to the reviewer at least.
In terms of the actual masks, a number of these are rather old, attractive or uncommon, rarely seen or described in books or exhibits; some others are not so old or rare, but nevertheless very interesting. A minority of others are familiar from other standard reference works, and add little to this volume. Their inclusion follows from the goal to present the broad spectrum of Mexican masking.
On the other hand, there appear to be virtually no decorative masks among all those illustrated, which is a credit to the excellent scholarship of the author. Indeed, she has taken great care to identify the carvers, the towns, the estimated age, and the indigenous traditions of each mask, to the extent that this could be documented. The estimated ages are refreshing in their modesty, in contrast to the florid attribution of great age to any demonstrable wear, that one so commonly encounters in books about masks.
In the end, a book about Mexican dance masks must rise or fall on the strength of the material and the quality of the photographs; from this perspective the book is a must buy for any Mexican mask collector or aficionado.

Customer Reviews:
When is a mask a skinning?.......2006-08-05
During his lifetime, Donald Cordry was a respected collector, a veritable walking encyclopedia on the folk arts of Mexico. His research on Indian costumes is highly respected. Unfortnately, Cordry's mask book, published postumously,is a testament to how even a knowledgible collector can be duped by unscrupulous dealers. Many of the masks represented in the book doubtless are genuine. But many are not. It's a pity, but some of the most skillfully carved and creative masks are, in essence, fake. The state museum of Arizona bought more than 500 of Cordry's masks shortly before his death -- again proving that even the experts can be fooled. This is a gorgeous book. The pictures are great, and the "masks" simply breath-taking. Buy and marvel -- but don't believe too much of what you read.
A Good Source on Mexican Material Culture.......2000-06-24
In designing a lesson plan on Mexican masks for the Mathers Museum of World Cultures at Indiana University, I found the Donald Cordry Exhibit Catalogue to be one of the most informative sources. Griffith's introduction to the book is clearly written, and well organized. But Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the book is the great number of color plates that accompany the text. It is precisely these illustrations that give this book its flavor. The plates feature masks from different regions of Mexico, especially from the state of Guerrero. Other mask-making traditions represented in this collection are those of the Mayo and Yaqui tribes from Sonora. Their famous "pascola" masks, for example, are among the most strikingly wonderful pieces that one can admire and read about in this book. The catalogue is only sixty-four pages long. But in spite of its short length, it serves well as an introductory source to the mysterious world of masks and masked performances. The high-quality photos alone (thirty-four total) make it well worth it.

Book Description
In rural Mexico, folk festivals and the dances that accompany them mark the high point of life. In preparation for these festivities, local artisans combine Old and New World traditions to forge an awe-inspiring array of masks, many of which are acclaimed and sought after by international collectors. This strikingly illustrated volume celebrates these wonderfully inventive masks and their creators in a rich display of artistry, vitality, beauty, and whimsy. Including a spectacular gallery of 130 full-color photographs and a fascinating text, Mask Arts of Mexico will inspire and inform anyone with an interest in folk art, photography, or anthropology.

Occimorronikkalli.......2007-02-19
Such a tremendous endevor could only be undertaken by Lechuga (Ms Lettuce), Sayer, and Lavender. I mean "Wow"! This book takes the mindbending and esoteric subject masks and extracts information on levels unseen in either science or the arts. Reading the book changed myself and my wife inexplicably.
Pleasant Overview of Masks from Mexico.......2004-10-28
I'm not sure why the other reviewer left only three stars (after praising the book). Anyhow, Ruth Lechuga's book will compliment any book on the genre. It is a superb overview of masks you will find from the various cultures within Mexico. The pictures are nice and crisp with excellent detail (nice photography).
Mask Arts of Mexico.......2000-06-23
I found it revealing to see so many and varied kinds of masks all on the pages of one book. It alowed me to compare the masks with others from I have seen around the world. I am surprized at the simalarities.

Book Description
The nine turquoise mosaics from Mexico are some the most striking pieces in the collections of the British Museum. Among the few surviving such artifacts, these exquisite objects include two masks, a shield, a knife, a helmet, a double-headed serpent, a mosaic on a human skull, a jaguar, and an animal head. They all originate from the Mixtec and Aztec civilizations first encountered by Europeans during the Spanish conquest in the early sixteenth century. The mosaics have long excited admiration for their masterful blend of technical skill and artistry and fascination regarding their association with ritual and ceremony. Only recently though, have scientific investigations undertaken by the British Museum dramatically advanced knowledge of the mosaics by characterizing, for the first time, the variety of natural materials that were used to create them.
Illustrated with more than 160 color images, this book describes the recent scientific findings about the mosaics in detail, revealing them to be rich repositories of information about ancient Mexico. The materials used to construct the mosaics demonstrate their makers’ deep knowledge of the natural world and its resources. The effort that would have been involved in procuring the materials testifies to the mosaics’ value and significance in a society imbued with myths and religious beliefs. The British Museum’s analyses have provided evidence of the way that the materials were prepared and assembled, the tools used, and the choices that were made by artisans. In addition, by drawing on historical accounts including early codices, as well as recent archaeological discoveries, specialists have learned more about the place of the mosaics in ancient Mexican culture.
Filled with information about the religion, art, and natural and cultural history as well as the extraordinary ability of modern science to enable detailed insight into past eras, Turquoise Mosaics from Mexico offers an overview of the production, utilization, and eventual fate of these beautiful and mysterious objects.

applique in your spare time.......2007-09-26
This hawaiian quilt applique book provides pictures and patterns for making interesting, nature oriented hawaiian quilts. You can adapt the patterns to basic applique, make different size quilts and use the motifs for specialized projects. Don't be surprised, there are few pictures of cats. I can't wait to make a few myself.
Cats Rule!.......2007-08-23
This is another wonderful book by Elizabeth Root with excellent Hawaiian quilt patterns. The designs can be made in any size from pillow to large wall size with enlarging. The cats are not part of the patterns but fabric photos or applique of cats on top of the Hawaiian designs would be really special.
Also look at her books on Menehune(little designs) and Patchwork Pillows.

Customer Reviews:
A perfect paper piecing book for cat and dog lovers :).......2003-10-24
This book has detailed colored pictures of all projects, and patterns that INCLUDE the seam allowance (my 2 most important factors in buying a paper piecing book).
Each project lists all the pertinent information you might require (i.e. quilt size, block size, fabric requirements, fabric cutting sizes). There are lots of tips and how-to's throughout the book, and "personalization" ideas are included for a number of the projects. The projects themselves are absolutely adorable.
Only one project in the book looked like it might be on the difficult side (Hanging BasKats) - the rest looked like they would be doable by most people with a little bit of sewing experience.
The color project pictures are all at the front, separate from the pattern/instruction pages, so it's sometimes necessary to go to the front of the book when working. Each project does clearly state where the colored photo is, but it would have been nice to have the color project photo WITH the project.
I certainly look forward to buying more books from this author and fellow cat lover :).
Must for a Pet Lover.......2003-02-08
This is a must for any cat or dog lover. I don't usually paper piece but I couldn't resist some of these designs for my animal loving family. 2 Cats on the fence sharing the moonlight made a great anniversary gift for my parents - was easy to do and turned out perfectly. The dachshunds are next on my list for my neice.
Whimsical but not "cutesy"!.......1999-07-02
I loved the way Janet Klime came up with cat quilts that are not cutesy or countrified, but rather some that are funky and even, in the case of the Siamese, sophisticated. The dog designs are great, too, but some of them do lean a little to the cute side. There are lots of different styles to choose from, so everyone is bound to find something that they like in this book. The designs are simple, unlike some paper pieced patterns with 33 pieces to a block. I completed a two-cat design called "tryst" (two cats with entwined tails) in about two hours with NO ripping out! I know that I will actually USE this book many times over, rather than just keeping it on my quilt book shelf. Have already purchased the fabric for the gorgeous Siamese!
Quick, easy, whimsical designs!.......1999-01-09
This book is one of the better ones that I own and will definitely be one of my 'favorites'. The designs have a lot of eye appeal and are refreshing. The patterns are easy to trace and because of its simplicity, very easy to enlarge or decrease in size. Because of this, customizing your project is a breeze. I just received it and have 'shared' it (but haven't let it out of my sight yet. :-) ) with my sister and couple of friends. They too have gotten excited over the fun, whimsical designs. Get the book...you won't be disappointed! Am look'g fwd to purchasing more books by Janet Kime in the near future. Aloha!

nice designs easy to make.......2006-07-21
Only thing I ever made out of this was an appliqued sweatshirt--fuzzy side out.
Easy. It looked good after I finished. I wore it for years.
Fortunately it didn't look anything like her samples.
And that is why I only gave it 4 stars. I loved her cats, I hated her fabric choices.
Not the first time this has happened. And that's better than the other way around, where the pictures are dazzling, but not really usable.

Book Description
Cat lovers, quilt collectors, and crafts enthusiasts alike will enjoy this delightful book devoted to images of fascinating felines adorning beautifully made quilts dating from 1840 to the mid-20th century.
Sandi Fox discusses the changing styles and techniques of quiltmaking over the past 100 years, identifying the origins of various designs. Cats and kittens are shown sitting erect, moving among boughs of berries, tumbling on a table with a ball of yarn, or peeping from a basket. Each beautifully photographed quilt is paired with poetry or prose drawn from works by Emily Dickinson, T. S. Eliot, W. B. Yeats, Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling, Beatrix Potter, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and other wonderful writers-adding further appeal to a charming gift book.
SANDI FOX, a quiltmaker and quilt scholar, has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Council. She is former curator of quilts at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and has authored numerous books and exhibition catalogues. Her own work is in many private and corporate collections. She lives in Los Angeles.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful creativity on show.......2002-06-01
Having decided from the beginning that each quilt should have a cat on it somewhere, I ordered this book to see examples of how people in the past have represented cats on quilts. The liveliness of representation of cats is quite amazing, with many of the quilts managing to capture the way a cat looks and behaves - no mean feat, you only have to look at available cat fabrics to see how rare this is.
This is a small book, with each page containing detail from one quilt and I'd recommend it strongly to anyone interested in seeing in close-up detail how cats have been pictured on old quilts. I think it's a wonderful book.
Smart, funny & beautiful.......2001-06-26
This is a FANTASTIC book. The quilts that the author chose to include are unique, one-of-a-kind pieces and often display a wonderful sense of humor. (Take, for instance, the quilt which features blocks with the head and front paws of a kitty, and the disappearing hind end of a mouse escaping from the kitty.) The excerpts from different writings about cats are understated and thoughtful, and the author provides a great mini-history of textiles in America. This book moved me into high gear in my own quilting and is an ongoing source of keen pleasure. If you don't quilt, if you just like cats, you'll love the book because of its folk-art depictions of cats; if you like cats AND quilting, this book will make you feel like someone let you loose in the catnip patch.
For lovers of both cats and quilts.......2000-10-11
This sweet book would make a nice gift - it is full of whimsical and unusual examples of cat motifs on American country quilts. Many cat-related books are a bit saccharine for my taste but this is a refreshing and delightful change of pace

Inspiring.......2006-04-03
Ms. Rauen's deeply felt ideas about creativity are inspiring. Her warmth and romance with art and life are evident. I especially enjoyed her thoughts on getting rid of negativity, and "filling up". The well organized projects are a lot of fun. I look forward to more of her titles.
Fresh, creative and user-friendly instructions!.......2005-07-09
I have both this book and "Cats in Hats" book and they are both invaluable resources for painting on wood, fabric, umbrellas, tile, as well as quilting, free-motion machine embroidery...well, you get the picture! A variety of approaches to fundamentally adorable designs add to the value of this book.
Clear and helpful directions and a sense of relaxed playfulness make this book a welcome addition to my art room library.

Comments from the author.......2003-06-12
"Sassy Cats" was not intended to be just a quilt book. The title is "Sassy Cats - Purrfect Crafts Projects". It has 15 projects for everything from silk painting, painting on wood, canvas, glass, and ceramics to applique, quilting, and free motion embroidery. As the author, I have been very pleased with the response and the feedback. In the book, I recommend that people play around with the designs, enlarging and reducing them for their specific project ideas. One fan even hooked one of the designs as a wool purse. Most of the designs lend themselves very well to be used as applique projects for quilting. Many of the painted projects were created in applique for HGTV's "Simply Quilts" television show with Alex Anderson. I'm sorry that the reviewer Lamkay thought it was just a quilt book. I do feel that based on her misunderstanding, her review is unfair and damaging to me. Thank you. Sheila Rauen
Disappointing!.......2002-05-14
I expected a quilt book and received a paint on silk book. If you like to paint on silk, buy it. If you expect patterns for quilting, forget it!
Sassy Cats.......2001-02-01
Anyone who crafts and loves cats will love this book! I first saw the author on Carol Duvall and knew that I had to try what she was demonstrating that day - a painted cat looking in a fishbowl. And when I found out she had written this book, I immediately went looking for it. You will NOT be disappointed. All of her projects have easy to follow instructions and they can also be used for any medium you want to try, be it painting, quilting, applique, etc. Her cat pictures are darling and my two (Mad Max and Maisie) already have their requests in to me! The only problem you'll have is trying to decide which one to do first!
