4 out of 5 stars Authentic Recipes.......2006-08-28

In my opinion, the only thing this book is lacking are photos. Otherwise, I probably would have given it 5 stars. The recipes are pretty simple yet very tasty. I've enjoyed everything I've made from this book so far!

5 out of 5 stars simple, easy, wonderful!.......2006-04-20

I have spent the last 3 and a half years living in northeastern Italy. I'll be going home to the US this year and I have to say, I'm a thrilled to have this book in my collection. Almost everything in this book (or some variation) has been served by my Italian friends at dinner parties or gatherings, or even on the menu of local eateries. This book allows me to take one of the things I love most about Italy home with me. I even picked up a few copies to give as gifts!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Flavors, Easy To Prepare, Clear Directions.......2004-10-20

I also bought this cookbook as an impulse, and am glad I did.
This book is chock full of wonderful receipes, that are easy to prepare, usually with what you have on hand. I just wish it had more pictures. My family loves everything I have fixed so far, and I appreciate the clear directions and simplicity of ingredients. The risottos are marvelous, as are the seafood dishes and soups. A must have for anyone who loves good Family Style Italian Country cooking......

5 out of 5 stars Brava Viana!.......2003-12-19

This is the 3rd of Viana La Place's cookbooks I have bought; all of them are superb. She has a gift for evoking the sights and smells of luscious fresh produce, artisan cheeses and crusty breads with her lively, obviously loving, descriptions. This is the way the Italians eat: simply, with love and gusto.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soups.......2003-11-10

I bought this book about 10 years ago after reading it in a library. The soup recipes alone are worth buying this book. I still make the Broccoli, Bean, and Pasta soup on a regular basis. A great cookbook for vegetarians who are tired of the same old, same old...

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing To Eating There.......2003-11-11

Like another reviewer, I spent a few weeks this past summer in Italy. In a small town near Rome I had one of the most memorable meals of my life. In Naples I had a plate of spaghetti with fresh tomato sauce and basil so good if I'd dropped dead right then and there, I would have died a contented man. When I got home, I wanted to recreate the food I had in Italy. This book, and all the others La Place has written, showed me how. I have other Italian cookbooks and I love them all. What distinguishes LaPlace's books is that she makes cooking a simple, quick undertaking so you don't feel like every meal's the final exam at Cordon Bleu. Along with speed and simplicity, she captures the improvisational, unpretentious essence of the best Italian cooking. Flavors are allowed to speak for themselves, they get amplified, not sauced over or cooked out of existence. The results of her recipes are dishes so fresh, easy, and authentic if I sit back afterwards over a cup of authentic Italian coffee (made according to La Place's directions in the excellent La Bella Cucina), I can almost hear Vesuvius rumble, almost hear the waves in the Bay of Naples. No one who buys any of La Place's books will regret it.

5 out of 5 stars very authentic.......1999-06-04

Having just spent a month in Italy, Cucina Rustica takes me back every time I use it. The recipes are simple to make and delicious. Especially wonderful is the Ribollita, zuppa di ceci and all the fagioli. The Spaghetti al Pomodoro Arrostito is the easiest to make and best tasting sauce ever. It's the only one my teenage son will eat (and he "hates" tomatoes)! Be sure to use fresh ingredients and shop at an Italian grocery store if possible.

5 out of 5 stars A staple cookbook.......1999-03-11

Given to me as a gift a few years ago, this cookbook has become my most used. Recipes are simple to follow and raves at the table are guarenteed. Recommended recipes: Goat Cheese with Sun Dried Tomatoes, Light Minestrone, Shrimp with Rosemary... and so many more. I have since given this book as a gift to many, MANY friends!

    Book Description

The Treadway Gallery, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, has been established for more than two decades and is known for its expertise in twentieth century American and European decorative art. The gallery serves as headquarters for an internationally-attended auction series focused on twentieth century art, including a specialized annual Rookwood auction. Collector Books is pleased to bring you this gallery's compilation of over 10 years of Rookwood auction results, from 1990 - 2002. This colorful book, filled with large detailed photographs of virtually hundreds of pieces of Rookwood pottery, gives collectors an idea of what their piece is worth. Not only are the dates and final bids for each item listed, but an estimated value range is given for the piece. Other important facts stated are approximate height, glaze, number, and condition of the piece. You will be astounded to learn what these pieces sold for at auction and how truly valuable these works of art have become. The front part of the book gives the gallery's conditions of sale and guidelines governing their results. Collectors will love this 10-year study of Rookwood Pottery by leading auctioneers in the field of ceramic art. REVIEW: This book highlights the years 1990 - 2002, ten years of Rookwood Pottery auction results from the Treadway Gallery, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio. Hundreds of pieces in full-color are presented, with information on glaze, design, date, height, number, and actual auction price realized.

Excellent depictions of Cincinnati Rookwood vases, plus listings of sale prices and estimated values.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book filled with beautiful pictures.......2003-07-12

Any person interested in Rookwood Pottery will find this book entrancing, both as a price guide and as an opportunity to admire great examples of Art Pottery. Of course price guides are obsolete the moment they start rolling off the presses, but the auction prices in this book will give you ballpark estimates for any similar piece you may have. Each piece of artist-produced art pottery is unique, so assigning values is difficult simply by using price guides and auction results. I bought the book because, after owning a few pieces of Rookwood throughout the years, you can't get enough. This book is great for admiring pieces of art you may never come upon in person.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Useless as a price guide.......2004-07-14

I picked this book up shortly after it first came out but was ultimately disappointed with it. Yeah, there were illustrations of some pretty pieces, but the values listed didn't seem to have much relation to the real prices Rookwood was being sold for at the time. One normally expects a certain amount of inaccuracy in a price guide when compared to actual market values. But the differences here were just so large that the book was useless. The pictures were nice, but you can find other books on Rookwood with more substance and equally nice pictures. Take a pass on this one.

1 out of 5 stars Be prepared to search alot and have faith in the prices.......1999-01-03

This book is not organized, except loosely by types. Pieces are organized poorly or not at all by shapes, not year or number. The authors are not named and their bases for prices are unstated. Its best quality is the quantity of photos. Someone should now take this "first draft" and make it into a book.

4 out of 5 stars Good but be careful.......2003-07-17

This is a good book for the beginning Rookwood collector. But for those more interested in the earlier, artist produced pieces, this book will be no help as it focuses more on the later mass production wares.

5 out of 5 stars Scholarship adds to book value!.......2002-03-15

This book is an absolute must for the Rookwood collector. The most complete survey of Rookwood figurals and paperweights available in the book marketplace today. The book gives very accurate market value estimates for each item and ranks each item's rarity from "never seen" to "common". The authors, however, deserve great praise for the scholarship which allowed them to identify the Finisher's responsible for the "Finisher's marks" occasionally impressed into the bottom of some Rookwood pieces. Having potter's names associated with these marks insures additional valuation increases for many examples of Rookwood pottery both artist signed and production. A terrific book and a great addition to any collector's library!

                                    5 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2007-04-01

I was given Quilt-Lovers' Favorites Vol. 3 as a gift and loved that book so much I decided to buy Vol. 1. I am so glad I did; this was a great purchase. There are so many quilts I want to make from this book I can't decide which one to start first. What I like about this book are the different color options, the various sizing options (especially crib sizes which I like to give as gifts), and the actual quilting pattern that you can copy at the end of the book (if the pattern isn't provided the description of the quilting pattern is explained instead of the standard "quilt as desired" phrase.)

If you aren't familiar with Quilt-Lovers' Favorites, I recommend trying Vol. 1 & 3. The pictures are great, the instructions are straight forward, and the results are excellent. I'm sure I will try Vol. 2 and 4 in the near future.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2004-05-25

If you enjoy Better Homes and Gardens' other books and magazines you will really like this book! Each of the many designs in this book has a large color picture of the quilt, clear directions, and each quilt has a diagram of 'optional sizes' so that you can make the quilt any size. The end of the book has 14 pages of information for the beginner quilter. Along with complete and concise directions and the basic directions in the back, this book would be a good choice for beginners. There is also a wonderful variety of designs including the tradional Log Cabin and Nine Patch blocks along with more challenging designs like Robbing Peter to Pay Paul and Storm at Sea. This book also contains patterns for Red Work and Applique lovers.

Another great feature of this book, something that as a quilter I look for, is that each design has 3 or 4 variations. For instance the Robbing Peter to Pay Paul quilt is first represented in the classic red and white, but there is also a pillow in stripes and plaids and also a tablerunner made in a floral yellow patterned fabric--all of the same design! Laura Boehnke, quilt tester of American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine, does what she does best by designing the alternate choices in color and design for the patterns.

For individuals looking for a book that has a great number and variety of patterns and for individuals needing inspiration to see patterns worked in different color schemes, this is a great book! I am very glad I purchased this!
