Brazil is full of surprises. Surprising things such as having the largest Japanese community outside Japan (it's in São Paulo), a population and land mass on a par with the U.S., and a fusion population of native Indians, Portuguese, diaspora Africans, Italians, Spanish, Poles, Lebanese, and of course, Japanese. All these peoples have brought favorite foods to Brazil, adding to the pot. British food writer Michael Bateman's Café Brazil celebrates all this in a slim, colorful volume chock full of taste treats. Angels' Cheeks (Papos de Anjo), for example--this is a simple, egg-rich pastry baked in a muffin tin. Then, a vanilla-flavored sugar syrup is poured over each pastry. The origins are Moorish, but the dessert was brought to Brazil as early as the 15th century by Portuguese nuns who had learned the skills of egg and almond sweets from the Moors. Or for a more African spin, try Students' Cakes (Bolinho de Estudante). This dessert calls for tapioca (a by-product of the cassava brought to Brazil by Africans) sugar, and grated coconut (also brought to Brazil by Africans). The little cakes, cut like biscuits, are deep-fried and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon.

Among the main dishes in Café Brazil, you'll find the national dish, Feijoada Completa, a combination of black beans, beef and pork cuts, tomatoes, and chilies. Typically, this dish is accompanied by Stir-Fried Kale, Toasted Golden Casava Meal, and a Malaguetta Chili Sauce. There are seafood dishes such as Fish in Coconut Sauce or Shrimp Stew. Okra and Peanut Stew is a near-direct translation from West Africa and includes a pound of shrimp and a healthy dose of chopped ginger served on Coconut Rice. On the side, try Stewed Green Papayas, a Shrimp and Yam Puree, or Banana Bread with nutmeg, raisings, and Brazil nuts. A Passion Fruit Cocktail (powered by cachaca, a white sugar cane rum) or a White Rum Sour should do well to prepare the way to the table. --Schuyler Ingle

Nice and easy to follow instructhions.......2001-11-24

I recently received this book. I wanted it because I have recently returned from Brazil. I do enjoy this book, but I find that the majority of the foods come from the northern part of the country, which is heavily influenced by the sea and past African herritage. I spent the majority of time in the South and Western part, therefore many of the dishes are not known to me. It does have instructions as how to prepare the every popular Kale and beans..which seem to be the staple food of Brazil. I like the photos, but the book could have used a lot more...it is nice to see what the dish is supposed to look like. It provided a nice list of ingrediends and substitutions if the native ingredients weren't available in your area. Instructions are easy to understand. I am anxious to try the foods, including those I know nothing of...I like the book, but I wouldn't pay more than 15 dollars for it. Luckily, I bought it used for much less.

Cafe Brazil is packed with photos of not only finished dishes, but the countryside as well, from land to sea. Most dishes require little in the way of exotic ingredients, though many require fresh ingredients such as first coconut milk pressings which may consume time.

It Was The Original Nancy Ann Book.......2003-08-26

The author (who is now deceased) wrote this book with the information she had collected. Since then, it has been further researched, new facts were collected, new pictures taken, and now Elaine Pardee's "Encyclopedia of Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls" is the result of this research. This book was wonderful when it was published, and I still love it.

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK ON NANCY ANN DOLLS. IT HAS A LOT OF PICTURES. THE ONLY THING IS THE PICTURES ARE IN BLACK AND WHITE. IT WOULD BE A LOT BETTER IF THE PICTURES WERE IN COLOR. IT WOULD BE EASIER TO FIND THE DOLL YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. WOULD BE GREAT IF SOMEONE WOULD WRITE AND UPDATE THIS BOOK ON NANCY ANNY STORYBOOK DOLLS WITH COLOR PICTURES. SEEMS A SHAME THAT THE TOY COMPANIES CAN'T BRING THESE DOLLS BACK FOR US TO BUY. THE LITTLE GIRLS MIGHT NOT LIKE THEM, BUT I AM SURE US ADULTS WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SOME NEW NANCY ANN'S. Considering how long ago the dolls were produced this is a helpful book for those trying to identify their dolls. It is true that 95% of the pictures are in black & white which makes it much more difficult to recognize but it is better then no picture. Also there are several mistakes in the discriptions of some dolls and wrong accessories on some of the dolls. Lets just hope that a new and improved version (with color photos) will soon be available.

I agree with the reviewer who said this book was a disappointment. The editors should be smacked for including all of those horrid b&w photos. As someone who was looking for help identifying Nancy Ann dolls and could have really used this book, it was a great disappointment because of the photos.

Anybody interested in collecting Nancy Ann dolls must have this book which chronicles the history of these beautiful dolls and is chock full of photos and helpful information.

Excellent book!.......2007-05-20

This is a wonderful book, especially for the beginning collector. It is mainly a catalog of color photographs of dolls by style number, sometimes showing as many as ten variations of one doll in different costumes. There also is historical information on the evolution of the dolls and ways to identify the various body molds.

This is a true ''encyclopedia'' of every Nancy Ann doll know to exist. I found it an excellent source for identifying dolls from the 1940s which I had found in the attic.

I purchased another Nancy Ann book which is far inferior and which I never use. If you want to buy just one Nancy Ann book, this is it. If you have others, this would be a fine addition to your library and probably the only one you'll ever need for reference.

It is easy to tell that a lot went into this beautifully illustrated book. I didn't realize until I went through this book how many dolls of this type there were. I was disappointed that I was only able to identify one of my storybook dolls. Still recommend this book for the avid Nancy Ann Storybook doll collector.

Wonderful informative book.......2005-11-06

Ever since the early fifties I have had Nancy Ann Storybook dolls and this book is a must own for anyone interested in these dolls, if for no other reason than it boggles the mind to see how many of these dolls were made, and for all ethnic groups which is interesting when one considers black and Asian dolls were almost unheard of in the pre-60's days. Today I must have about twenty five of the dolls including a Nun doll but haven't been able to find the black doll that had the blue and white plaid dress which I had as a child. My dolls are heirlooms that will be passed down to family members who appreciate the workmanship. The book has so much information on the start of the company and how even during WW2 they were big sellers. And the photos are awesome.

I have enjoyed learning about new and innovate ways to wrap both simple boxes and unusually shaped gifts. This book makes it easy to learn the creative techniques by showing simple diagrams along with step by step instruction. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in beautifully wrapped gifts. This book reminds us that the art of presentation should be as important as the gift itself.

Very creative!.......2006-08-08

I like the fact that the ideas are so creative. Lots of unique ideas and plenty of suggestions and tips. Most ideas are accompanied by great pictures, so you'll know what the finished product is supposed to look like! As an amateur with no creative flair, this book is exactly what I need!

Progress beyond mere giftwrap and create unique boxes and other containers for your gifts, be it food, clothes, jewelry, whatever. Small items and money really benefit from containers that don't immediately give away their contents like those velvet clamshells jewelry boxes or dollar shaped greeting cards do. Some of my favorite projects are:
-a trangular pyramid formed by folding a triangle shaped piece of paper.
-2 different colored heart shaped boxes that fit together to form a square with an 'S' curve between 2 opposite corners (think a diamond shaped yin-yang symbol).
-a flower box where folded paper forms a triangular cone on the bottom and a flower design on the top (a pink and white one are in the lower middle of the cover photo).
-a hexagonal box made of six individual triangular boxes.
-boxes specifically for food items, many with handles.
-boxes for floral items, some with handles.

These are just a few of many, many projects in this book. The first section of the book contains color photos of the finished projects and the rest of the book contains the instructions (with photos,diagrams and measurements) to make them. The diagrams can be photocopied to scale a project up to a required size.

AN IMPORTANT WARNING: The bulk of the projects don't contain step by step instructions. Immediately following the color photo section are step by step instructions for 5 boxes that are represenative of all of the projects in the book. A legend is given for what the thick or thin solid lines and dashed lines mean in the diagrams. All projects thereafter assume that you know to cut thick lines, but to fold thin lines like a valley withought being explicitly directed to do so.

Confused? Well, if a project required you to fold a piece of paper so that it opens like a book read from left to right, you would be shown a drawing of a square or rectangle with a thin line in the middle. There would also be a black and white photo of a piece of folded paper with the folded portion on the left side. If you didn't remember that thin lines mean you fold paper to open in a 'V' shape, you would have trouble. It's crucial that you do the step by step projects and learn the legend if you haven't done origami or similar crafts. If you think you'd need more guidance, this probably isn't the book for you.

Uninspired.......2006-06-14

This book was what I like to call a "quick fire" book. Someone gathered some great vingtage photos together and spent all of 20 minutes writing he content and then zipped it off to the publisher for a quick buck. There is very little content but the picures are nostalgic. I would only recommend this to someone building a library on this type of subject matter. There are far better books, see other reviews on this book for recommnedations.

Nuclear custard........2004-06-11

I saw this title on the publisher's website and it seemed just my kind of book, a strong visual history/nostalgia survey of the white middle-class suburbs in the fifties.

Now, having looked through it several times I find it rather disappointing, it is a very superficial look at the Fifties home. Each room in the house has a chapter plus one each for, Outdoors maintenance and Backyard recreation. The chapters start with a few hundred words introduction then the following pages are ad illustrations and short bits of text that strangely don't really relate to the images on the page. A lot of the illustrations have been cropped from ads and in many cases could have been a lot bigger than they appear.

This publisher's books generally have colored backgrounds to the pages and in this title the background motif are colored strips, on many pages these get as much space as the illustrations which I feel is rather unnecessary, especially where an ad has been reduced too much in size and the text is not readable.

I recently bought a similar book, 'Going Home to the Fifties' by Bill Yenne (IBN 0867195657) which also used illustrations from ads for each room in the house. Like 'Atomic Home' it was a rather generalised view of the times but of the two books I think it is the better one and it certainly has a lot more text. For a better look at homes of the period I can really recommend 'Inspiring 1950 Interiors' by Eugene Moore (ISBN 0764304585), this has hundreds of photos of room sets, created for Armstrong Flooring ads that ran in the big consumer magazines of the period. These rooms reflected a middle-class life style and nicely, the flooring in the photos does not overpower the rest of the room. The other book that covers the period beautifully is 'All-American Ads 50s' by Jim Heimann (ISBN 3822811580) an amazing 960 pages of ads, all beautifully reproduced, and the chapters on the home (Consumer Products and Interiors) have 218 ad pages.

'Atomic Home' is sort of a fun book but unfortunately doesn't come up to expectations so I am still waiting for the coffee-table title about life in the fifties suburbs.
