"Never again will a burger be just a burger." That's what one reviewer in the World of Cookbooks newsletter wrote about these extraordinary, mouth-ravishing, soul-satisfying, deliciously tempting versions of America's favorite food.
From a Classic Grilled Hamburger on a toasted homemade bun to a fabulous southwestern Chili Grill Burger with spicy Chipotle Mayonnaise to Shrimp Boulette Po' Boy with Creole Sauce, here is the ultimate source for a burger to tempt anyone.
In the words of editor Marcel Desaulniers, award-winning author of Death by Chocolate and chef and co-owner of the Trellis Restaurant, "Contemporary American chefs have staked a claim in culinary history by revitalizing -- not reinventing -- American regional foods." In this lushly illustrated volume, 46 amazing chefs turn their professional imagination to the humble burger. What results is a fabulous collection of more than 130 recipes for delectable burgers and side dishes. Enjoy the luxury of a Salmon Burger served with Fennel and Red Onion Salad and Sweet Potato Fries, or surprise your guests with an Aztec Burger for dessert-assembled with Chocolate Buns and Rubblechuck Fries, and served with Raspberry Relish, it is a chocoholic's dream!
Desaulniers has gathered expert chefs, all graduates of the renowned Culinary Institute of America, from all across the United States -- New York to Charleston, Atlanta to Chicago, Dallas to Phoenix, Las Vegas to Sonoma -- to collaborate on this delicious journey of the imagination and palate. Throughout this beautiful book, his editorial touch is evident in the crystal-clear instructions, helpful tips on preparation, and expert techniques for the home cook.
You will definitely agree that a burger will never again be just a burger.

Well-presented, complete menus.......2007-01-18
This is a good reference for non-typical burgers; some recipes (the Wahoo Burger, the Mansion Roadhouse Burger, Sweet Potato Fries to name a few) are superb, others are only marginal. The photos are great, full of color and detail that correctly highlights the food. One aspect I enjoyed is the way the recipes are grouped and presented in complete menus.
Not Your Conventional Burger!.......2001-12-06
Death By Chocolate author, Marcel Desaulniers outdoes himself with this compendium of the world's most tempting and simple meal--the burger. In this 100+ page volume, 47 Culinary Institute of America chefs collaborate to provide burgers and accoutrements for whatever suits your personal fancy. Want a tuna burger?--no problem--and boy, is it tasty and easy to create! A regional specialty? Choose between such savories as a Mediterreanean Lamb Burger or a Wisconsin Camp-fire Burger. Creativity spans the food spectrum from the conventional Bistro Burger to the more flamboyant Duck Burger. Full color pages make your selections easier to make. You really cannot go wrong with this book!
Mouth Watering Bugers to Meister.......2001-07-09
Marcel turns out just fantastic cookbooks. Having enjoyed each of his immensely, I couldn't wait to try these out. Had trouble securing the book, but let me tell you, it was worth it.
This is an incredible selection of creative burgers plus all the accompaniaments from renown CIA grads. The burgers are made from not only beef or pork or veal, but also shrimp and fish and crab and mushrooms and chocolate.
The fixin's include all kinds of fries: potato and onion, and slaws and salads, and sauces and desserts, etc.
This is as all Marcels well illustrated with photos and hints on purchase of exotic supplies, suggested accompanying drinks, sources, techniques, etc.
Not enough time yet to try all, but the Duck Burger with Wild Rice Buns, Carmelized Sliced Onions and Tarragon Mushrooms was soooo good!
You'll enjoy this one with all your friends around the grill!
Burger Meisters.......2000-06-20
If you want to experiment with some delicious and even very unique burger recipes this is a worthwhile purchase. All the recipes are listed with the chef that created them and what restaurant that chef is from which makes for some interesting reading. There are quite a few pictures but not every recipe has one. These are not all beef burgers either, I would say about half of them are made from fish, pork, veal or chicken. The only thing I don't like is that for many of the "non-beef" recipes they tell you to grind up the meat using this or that kind of grinding attachment - I personally do not own a meat grinder so I am hoping chopping it up fine by another method will be comparable. There are some more exotic ingredients called for too, but at least they tell you where you can find it (a lot of items found at Asian markets are used). They also make a lot of side notes for you regarding the recipes. Another neat aspect of the book is that they give you the recipes for the bread/buns used for each burger if you want to make them from scratch to get the whole "flavor effect". Each burger recipe includes recipes for side dishes that go well with it whether they are salads, potatoes or vegetables. This is a great book to add to your collection if you enjoy burgers and want to be a little adventerous!
Fabulous Burgers.......2000-05-08
This cookbook has been awarded the James Beard Foundation award for best cookbook on a single subject. It is very clear why it has been given this honor! After enjoying other cookbooks by Marcel Desaulniers and wanting to find a new twist on the burger I decided to purchase this book. I am not sorry! It is fantastic! It is a compilation of recipes gathered from gradutes of the CIA. Loaded with photos and tips boxes that provide helpful hints for substitutions and preparation. It includes recipes for several salads (marinated caluiflower, creamy mustard dill potato), relishes, variations on potato sides (shoestring, cheese fries, grilled yukon golds), spreads, pastes, mayos, breads and buns. All for the burger-- of which there are many to choose from! Including, bistro sytle stuffed with goat cheese, the good ol' american burger, turkey and pork based burgers as well as fish (tuna, cod and salmon) burgers. All look fantastic! I have tried the blues burger stuffed with blue cheese and basted in BBQ sauce. Both my husband and I enjoyed it. If you have been looking to spice up your burgers- this is the cookbook for you!
Book Description
This is the first major comprehensive book on the history and evolution of antique glass bottles, flasks and jars between 1500 and 1850. Lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned colour photography, it depicts 773 bottles and seals carefully chosen from private collections, with only three examples being from museums.
Whilst the collecting of antique drinking glasses is very popular throughout Europe, the collecting of utility bottles, flasks and jars has until recently very much neglected on the Continent in spite of the wide variety of shapes and colours. This book has been written for all collectors, archeologists, museums, libraries, historians, researchers, writers, institutions, bottlemakers, wine and beer enthusiasts, pharmacists and anyone interested in the collecting of antiques and the social history they reflect. It includes the most comprehensive world-wide bibliograpy on glass bottles ever produced, listing 1,150 titles,an extensive glossary and a separate 16-page price guide booklet.
The history and evolution of glass bottles is chronologically (1500-1850, the pre-industrial period) described in a general chapter.
Bottles illustrated in the book are systematically classified in separate chapters by country :Great Britain, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Scandinavia, Alpine Countries, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and America.

At Last, a True Guide for European-Bottle Collectors.......2001-10-27
The publication of Willy's book marks a major milestone in the field of black-glass collecting. It is the first real effort at a comprehensive and authoritative guide on European bottles aimed at a broad English-reading audience worldwide. For years, collectors and others have waited for just such a book to appear. The numerous colour photos are outstanding. The text is clear, to the point, and easy to read. Any collector, no matter where he lives or what he collects, will, after reading the book, be able to pursue his passion in a much more informed way. I highly recommend the book, which should be on the book shelf of every serious bottle collector and student of historical glass containers.

Believing that wonderful paint effects need not entail the many complications of oil-based materials, acclaimed painted-finishes expert Debbie Travis has developed easy step-by-step methods for terrific-looking treatments, all achieved with water-based supplies. With large, beautiful photos, clear instructions, and well-chosen colors, she demonstrates 35 different finishes for walls and floors (textured, patterned, and stone types) and for furniture, trim, and accessories (antique and specialty, metallic, and stenciling methods), plus four "master techniques" (colorwashing, ragging, sponging, and dragging). Travis also gives careful attention to getting started, which she believes intimidates people even more than learning the actual techniques. She explains how to find inspiration, choose a style appropriate to your own tastes, and select colors. Even the most timid of amateur decorators should be able to handle most of the techniques presented in Debbie Travis's Painted House.
Book Description
Debbie Travis' Painted House
Paint has long been valued as a fast and creative way to give your home a fresh new look, and for the first time, the host of the popular television series Debbie Travis' Painted House shares the well-kept trade secrets that have made her one of today's hottest painted- finishes experts. Based on her groundbreaking philosophy that spectacular paint effects need not be the product of messy oil paints and complicated techniques, Debbie Travis' Painted House offers complete instructions for more than thirty-five incredible finishes, all created using worry-free water-based paints and glazes.
In the first section, "Getting Started," you'll learn all you need to know about materials, tools, surfaces, and preparation, including the pros and cons of different types of paint and how to make your own inexpensive alternatives to costly professional brushes and tools. You'll also find inspiration for choosing colors and working around a specific theme, such as a Southwestern or English Country style. The next section covers finishes for walls and floors, offering patterned and textured looks. The final section demonstrates finishes that work best with the smaller surfaces of furniture and decorative accessories, such as gilding and faux tortoiseshell. Each project--from a simple colorwashed wall to an elegant faux marble mantel, from a time-worn antiqued sideboard to a contemporary looking "sheet metal" table--is accompanied by detailed photography and step-by-step instructions, as well as suggestions for alternative looks and valuable tips to ensure truly professional results.
Lavishly illustrated and packed with important information, precise recipes for creating unique paint effects, and a complete source list, Debbie Travis' Painted House enables you to (almost) effortlessly achieve today's most sought-after decorative looks.
Barbara Dingle has written and edited extensively for the design and decorating market for fifteen years. She shares Travis' passion for painted finishes, and when not writing about them can be found transforming her own walls "with a bit of paint."

terrible.......2005-10-15
That book was expected AUG 25 tHIS IS Oct.14 I still can not get satisfaction I can not find e-mail addreaa for bestbookdealers I do NOT hve the book And Someone has my Money Terrible! Merry Margaret merry2b1@vom.com
I expected more..........2004-06-21
I was looking for a design idea for my house and I got a quick overview of detailed techniques. I didn't get a good idea of all of the techniques to use on a floor, what I'd need for vinyl..It is alright to look through.
Where to put the lamp? Paint it on the wall..........2003-09-30
OK to be fair this book teaches different painting techniques successfully. But throughout the examples it seems like they HAVE to paint everything possible. Rather than put a real plant in a room, they paint one onto a wall. Rather than install a tile floor or brick wall, they paint fake ones in. It all just has sort of a comical feel when finished. If you flip through a Pottery Barn catalog and consider that tasteful, then these designs leave alot to be desired. Buy this book for technique, but consider others for inspiration.
Great book, easy read........2002-11-06
You don't need to know anything about decoration to enjoy this book. I bought it as a gift for my wife and I ended up enjoying it as much as she did.
Most of the techniques used by Debbie on her show are illustrated here in full color. There is an interesting section about the materials used also, with lots of information I didn't know.
Use the book how it was intended..........2002-03-19
This book wasn't intended to make everyone happy with Debbie's color choices or furniture selections, it's intended to teach you painting techniques and preparation, which it does, beautifully. Debbie is fearless and very adventurous when it comes to painting and re-decorating, her colors don't have to suit you, but all of us decorating fanatics can definitely glean some helpful hints from her trial and error in technique.

“A welcome companion...The first two chapters—on space and color and on inspiration—set the stage perfectly as motivational tools....Most appealing are the brilliant, illustrative color photgraphs. Twenty projects demonstrate the range of Carter’s artisty....Enjoy this for ideas and inspiration.”—Booklist.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and informative.......2006-11-24
Carter's book gives a wide-ranging look at many aspects of decorative painting. He starts with a brief introduction, followed by a gallery covering just about every room in the house in his bold, dramatic painted treatments - the cover give just of his interior examples. Take that as an inspriation or warning, as you see fit.
Next, he gives brief descriptions of many basic techniques, including multilayered washes of color, spattering, dragging, marbling, woodgrain finishes and others. This could have been a great resource, but lacks the detail and clarity needed for a do-it-yourselfer to have much chance of success. The project section includes two samples of furniture decoration, but the large majority describe room decorations. Again, I found the directions improvable, especially because I already had reservations about the wisdom or practicality of a beginner tackling such large projects with unfamiliar materials and techniques. I really had to wonder, too, about whether I'd like to live in a room decorated in faux leopard fur by means of stamps cut from potatos.
The last sections present primers on paints, solvents, media, and surface preparation (primers included, if you'll pardon the pun). This is epsecially helpful for special problems, including metallic and masonry surfaces. In most other ways, though, other books are better for the fussy bits of technique, materials, and suggestions for approachable projects.

Skip This One if you are a Beginner.......2005-12-03
I checked this book out of the library to determine if it was one I would like to add to my collection.
The first half of the book "Inspirations" showed different rooms with various faux finishes and paint, none of which were detailed. The second half of the book was divided into "Technique and Effects", "Projects" and "Directory of paints and surfaces".
"Technique and Effects" addresses the various techniques, i.e. sponging, splattering, combing, strie and others. Generally there were 1-2 small (about 2" x 4-5") close-up photos of the specific technique. The instructions for the technique followed with a few illustrations, not photographs. Some sections did not have illustrations, just text instruction of the technique (antiquing, aging wood and trompe l'oeil).
"Projects" included things like:
- Crackle-glazed headboard (basic and brief)
- Opulent hallway (some weird star-like spots that seemed more appropriate for a child's room or maybe a celestial theme)
- Faux Fur Interior (walls painted in a leopard-print using potatos)
- Theatrical Drawing Room (very amateurish looking).
There WERE several nice projects such as the:
- Empire Style Salon which used Trompe l'oeil panels (no detailed instructions)
- Townhouse Suite with Blue and white striped walls (again just brief steps)
- Silhouetted Salon - very unusual technique and kind of a stylized art painting of a figure done in a navy color
- Stone Blocked Bathroom - brief instructions but think I could follow this one without too much trouble
"Directory" discusses different type of finishes and how they are used; exterior and how to paint various objects (gutters, brick, doors); tiles/ceramic/glass and plastic. I found this section very informative, even though it did not go into a great amount of detail on each component but it was helpful information.
This book may be great for someone who already does faux-finishing, but I felt it lacked details for the beginner. I do think there are much better books out there for learning paint techniques which go into more detail. You might want to try Fresh Paint by Glenwood Sherry, Walls that Wow from Country Sampler Decorating Ideas (even though many of their techniques are not country) and Great Paint Finishes for a Gorgeous Home by Gary Lord
Excellent Idea Book!.......1999-12-15
I have been a professional faux painter for over 5 years. This is the book I turn to when a client is looking for something unusual. The photos provide endless, timeless finishes and designs. I have spent countless hours poured over Mr. Carter's book and I always find a little something in the pictures that I can turn into a 'new' look. The current 'in-style' colors may change, but that is the beauty of paint! Change the colors and you have a new look. As I always say, the best ideas usually begin as someone else's!

Not a must have.......2002-02-26
I'm not a professional painter so I need a lot of details on how to do something and this book was short on details. Most of the pictures of the effects are very close up, so I have no idea what they look when viewed a few feet away. I was disappointed with this book.

Great ideas for modern paint designs.......2001-12-30
I am a professional decorative painter, and this is without a doubt my favorite idea book. This doesn't have any of the frilly country stencils or flowers - this is all very stylized and modern, with clean lines and bright colors and metallics. It is definately something different from the normal decorative painting fodder. It is a great addition to a collection of idea/reference books. I use this book all the time.
