I WAS THERE.......2005-09-25
I was lucky enough to be a finalist in the 2003 Build A Better Burger Contest in the potato contest. The book features my name.
There are lots of wonderful recipes in the book. I am sure you can adapt them for indoor cooking. And, you can mix and match---a burger from one recipe with the toppings from another recipe. As a plus, Chef Star (the head chef at Sutter Home Wine) gives a wine paring for each burger.
You will get a year's worth of burgers from this book.
Great Burger cookbook!.......2005-09-06
Interesting burger recipes. most are not that difficult. Great ideas to spice up your bbq!
INTERESTING RECIPES BUT WILL YOU MAKE THEM?.......2005-07-20
Build a Better Burger presents the winning recipes from the annual Build a Better Burger National Cook-off held annually and sponsored by Sutter Home. Recipes begin trickling in during the Summer and the best are invited to compete in early Fall in the beautiful Napa Valley where the grand prize is a whopping $50,000. With that kind of money on the line, you know that these are people who take their burgers seriously. The book begins with a brief but breezy history of the burger as well as some of the notable fast food burger chains such as McDonald's and White Castle.
The book presents the winning recipes by year beginning with 1990. These are no everyday burgers, however. These creative recipes use just about any ingredient you can think of. Not limited to just beef, these recipes call for ground turkey, chicken, pork, buffalo, lamb, tuna, Salmon, even Italian sausage and shrimp! Among the exotic burger recipes contained in the book are such gems as: Three nut turkey Burgers with tropical fruit salsa, Peppered Lamb Burgers with hot tomato jam, Salmon Burgers with Lemon cilantro mayonnaise, Samurai Burgers made with tuna, plum jam, and fish broth, and Chipolte Honey BBQ Bacon Burgers with Gorgonzola cheese. No...these are not your everyday backyard burgers.
That's its appeal and maybe a bit of its weakness as well. First, many of the recipes contain some rather unusual ingredients. Items such as Moscato, South African peppadew, and dried Guajillo chiles are things you probably won't find in the average grocery store. The recipes are well presented with gorgeous color photography of the finished creations. They're certainly mouth-watering to view but I wonder if they will have broad appeal. Honestly looking through the dozens of recipes I could only pick a handful that I'd really want to try out. Perhaps others are more adventurous than me. If you are, then this is certainly a great place to start for some new and exciting recipes.

Book has cards... That's about it........2004-01-15
This book has cards and that's about it. The cards in this book are way overpriced. For example I have a Barry Sanders/Jerry Rice card. In the book it goes for one hundred dollars. In Beckett it goes for twenty five bucks. I have a Chad Pennington card. In the book it goes for one hundred dollars. In Beckett it goes for a measly twenty dollars. I can give many more reasons not to buy this book but I am limited to only a thousand words. Buyers Beware... DO NOT BUY!!! Buy Beckett!

Book Description
The bestselling guide to sewing gets a freshening up!
And it’s from Vogue®: the most respected name in needlework.
A trusted classic since 1975, Vogue® Sewing has remained a consistent bestseller and sewer’s favorite. Now it’s been fully revised and updated, with the latest information and all-new photographs and illustrations, introduction, and page layout. From choosing a machine to mastering couture techniques, it covers everything stitchers need to know to make professional and fashionable garments. It’s certain to remain the premier sourcebook for sewers everywhere.
This technique-rich Vogue’® manual contains comprehensive instructions for understanding pattern markings, selecting fabrics and notions, hand-stitching and mending, pressing, and measuring to fit. Everything’s beautifully laid out, with charts and detailed explanations. And as it teaches, it also steers you to the right project for your sewing level, with a plethora of photos that showcase different options for both beginners and those more expert with a needle.
Customer Reviews:
This is the sewing book that you're looking for!.......2007-06-26
IF, that is, you're looking for a book that goes into further detail than the standard beginner's sewing book. My mother, who taught Beginner's and Advanced sewing for decades (after earning a full four year scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago for her sewing skills out of high school), told me that this was a book that she recommended to her advanced (high school) sewing classes, so it may not be the easiest book to just flip through and use off the cuff, but it definitely is an extensive book that brings in not just the craft of sewing, but the actual art of it - something that I, as an artist and art teacher, find to be very important. And my mom just couldn't say enough about what an excellent sewing resource this book is.
My first sewing book was The Complete Book of Sewing New Edition, which IS great for visual references on what the tasks you're undertaking should look like throughout the process, but I found it to be very bare bones when it came to answering my "okay, sooo, WHY am I doing this again, instead of doing that???" type questions. "Vogue Sewing" answers all of those questions for me, as well as offering very helpful hints on how to properly tailor a garment to your specific figural requirements, how to remove specific stains, why to use one fabric over another, what the differences are between a variety of fabrics.... and I got all of this from simply skimming through the book! Yes, this book may guide you towards using Vogue patterns, but considering that that company's name figures VERY prominently in the title, it should be pretty obvious that this book isn't necessarily going to steer you towards using Simplicity or Butterick patterns, especially since I doubt that they have easy access to the copyrights that would allow them to reference those companies' patterns. If that doesn't bother you (it sure doesn't bother me), this book isn't just worth a look, it's worth the full cover price, let alone the discounted price you'll find it for here on Amazon!
Again, if you want a book that's going to ease you into the world of sewing by holding your hand and helping you take baby steps (something we ALL can use at the beginning of anything new), you're probably better off with The Complete Book of Sewing New Edition, as a starting point. BUT, if you're looking for a book that will take about as much deciphering as a standard pattern's guide sheet, but offer a great wealth more information about why you're doing what you're doing, and everything you could think of in between, this is DEFINITELY the book you want to buy! Heck, you could just do what I did, and buy 'em both! If, however, you only intend to buy one sewing book in the near future, and you want something that will take a little more investment (of time and thought), and give you a MUCH bigger return in knowledge and experience, buy this one first!
Great book!.......2007-06-21
I bought this book when I began sewing and it became quite useful when I ran into little hiccups on technique. Yes, it does push more of a couture apporoach to sewing, but I found the information to be quite informative.
So sneaky.......2006-12-27
One thing I really didn't like about this book is that it tries to get the reader to buy Vogue patterns, and talks only about how to alter them, but does NOT mention how to make patterns from scratch yourself. Just another marketing trick to increase sales of their patterns. Although it does have some other practical info on sewing.
Not Stiff Enough.......2006-12-16
Most books on the how-to of sewing are content to show the reader how to sew a seam, insert a zipper, set a sleeve, fix a rip, use iron-on interfacing, and tack a hem. This work persuades the reader to look beyond the mechanics of sewing and think in terms of fashion. For example, fabric textures, ease in wear, the overall silouette of the wearer, and color can make a garment so-so or totally unique. Better still, the home sewer is encouraged to pursue the fantastic opportunity to create one-of-a-kind clothing item to make heads turn.
The reviewer has assigned a three-star rating because this is a fairly big 450 page softbound manual that becomes a bit unwieldy in use.
I love this book.......2006-11-19
I really like this book because it goes into advanced alterations which is what a lot of other sewing books lack. I was surprised to find out that it has that as a section, being that this is a general sewing book. But it's more than that, there's also couture sewing techniques and a section on how important color is, and guidance on choosing the right colors. That's also something I have a hard time with.
Book Description
Experts have hailed it as the definitive publication on fashion sewing—now this classic has been revised and updated to include the most comprehensive, up-to-date techniques and sewing machine technology. “Whether you’re a novice learning the basics of home sewing or an expert seamstress, this is the book for you. Very Helpful.......2000-05-25
My sister (a Professional) recommened I purchase this book. I am glad I waited for the newly revised edition of this book. It's very good. It touches on all aspect's of sewing. Pattern adjustment's, style, color, construction, ect. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a beginner or has not atteneded any formal instruction classes for sewing. The only thing I didn't like was that the illustration's were drawn and not actual photographs. But the drawings were still adequate. They were understandable. Buy it. You'll be glad you did. I also bought The Complete Photo Guide to Sewing by Singer. Together they work very well.

Vogue/Butterick Step-By-Guide to Sewing Techniques.......2004-03-20
This has been a great resource for me returning to sewing after 25 yr. hiatus. I have gone back to it over and over again the past few years to see how they explain something I'm not clear on. It may not please very experienced sewers, but as the title says,"Step-by-Step Guide to Sewing Techniques", not Couture techniques.
Good - but not great.......2003-03-20
Will certainly help the beginner, but don't expect it to get you through a pattern for a very complicated designer garment. A good reference, but it shouldn't be your only one.
Good for Beginner.......2001-11-29
Like the previous reader said, this is like a dictionary. It does help me when I am not sure how to do a certain type of stitch. However, some intructions are not much clearer than the ones that come with the patterns.
This book is great for filling in the instructions that come with patterns. You may need a second source for other things though.
Very helpful!.......2000-03-15
I found this book very helpful. It is like a dictionary for sewing--every time I am not sure how to do something, I just flip through the book (it's arranged alphabetically) and look it up! There are simple illustrations to show me how.

Amateur window dressing.......2000-08-18
Not knowing how to make your own curtains ? This is an excellent book for those of us not knowing were to start or what to do. The book has step by step instructions and all the need to know and tips of the trade. It has wonderful ideas and creative ways to make your home look modern and the pictures are a greate source of ideas. Congrats to Vogue and Butterick!
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Information.......2006-01-05
This book has great comprehensive sewing information for both construction and couture. Also included is men's wear, tailor fitting, and body size guide. This book covers more then what modern sewing books do, but the biggest drawback is the old 70's pictures, however, as the information does not change, and styles are constructed similarly from fashion period to fashion period, this is merely an aesthetic annoyance. Valuable information for a fraction of the cost it would take to purchase the many volumes this one contains.
Book Description
Nature and décor become one with traditional floral chintz and silverware hammered into fruit and vegetable shapes. Delphinium blue, lemon yellow, lavender, and rich earth tones can inspire a truly organic decorating scheme. Three-dimensional textiles have insect and leaf patterns “trapped” in their weave. It’s a celebration of outdoor shapes and forms.

what happened.......2003-02-12
I have every victoria book ever published and this is the only one I did not like. Where were the flowers. I have a passion for anything with flowers on it, especially roses on fabric.I ordered this as part of an introductory offer to a book club and boy was I disappointed. There were hardly any flowers in the book. If you like the rest of victorias book you will not like this one. It was almost as if it were published by someone else.
Enchanting book filled with floral themes for the home........2002-10-29
This book is beautifully presented and allows the reader to journey through an indoor garden without the maintenance and care of living plants. There's useful information on china patterns that feature floral motifs and large photographs of colorful interiors utilizing various wall coverings.
