Not Worth Nine Bucks.......2003-09-07
Yes, a sweet book, as others have described it. But, I was a tad disappointed that it was so thin when I received it. I would not have paid nine bucks for this book if I had seen it first. This is the type of book I would pick up at a gift shop for three or four dollars, max. Still contemplating returning this one; I wouldn't even have to box it up - just stick it in an envelope and mail it back.
Delightful!.......2000-08-06
This delightful book was given to me by my daughter who knows I love tea parties. The ideas are great and adaptable for private parties (for one) or for a group. There is something about giving a tea that soothes the soul.
"One Is Like The Other".......2000-07-09
If you own or have read Emilie Barnes' lovely book, If Teacup's Could Talk, you will find it very similar to this book. It contains the same basic recipes and tea information. This book does give a little more detailed information, however if you want nicer pictures and easier reading, the other book would be my choice. Emilie Barnes is a great author with a delightful way of inspiring people, so it is no sin to own both books, however if you are on a budget, you may want to just buy one of the books, you would not be missing anything that way.
Very useful for planning.......2000-03-25
A very sweet book. Lots of ideas and recipes for tea parties.
What a WONDERFUL way to spend the afternoon.......1998-02-24
Emilie has written this book with the same wonderful outlook on life as she has all of her other books.

What a joy this book is........2007-05-26
This book was given to me as a gift. It is such a joy. I've now purchased numerous copies myself to give as gifts also. We all need to learn the lessons written in this beautiful little book of taking time to enjoy life, whether it be with tea or even coffee.
Time for Tea.......2006-05-06
I own a copy of this given to me by a friend who loves to drop by and share a cup of tea. I purchased a copy for my cousing for her birthday, also. The illustrations are wonderful and the lines of prose about tea and time spent with our friends make this the perfect little book to enjoy if you are having a quiet cup of tea alone.
If Teacups Could Talk.......2006-02-01
This is a book mothers should give to their daughters. I regret all the years of my daughters' childhoods that I did not use the good china and teapots. We did share over a cup of tea but how much nicer to have used the teacups instead of the everyday mugs. I will definitely be having more teas with my granddaughters and using the recipes in this book.
If Teacups Could Talk.......2005-10-06
This quick read is one for a woman to linger over. Wonderful thoughts and suggestions for "special times". Helps to establish tradions and customs for family and friends.
This book is my absolute favorite! It inspires & delights me.......2005-01-16
I have been collecting books about tea time for a number of years. This book is my favorite of all of them. The illustrations are gorgeous, the entire book is a visual joy. It inspires us to put some ritual into our lives, to slow down, take time, enjoy beauty & calm, serenity, and one another. Another book that inspires in the same way is by Alexandra Stoddard, Living a Beautiful Life. Emilie Barnes encourages us to put the tea kettle on the stove to boil the water, which gives time to set a lovely tray, cut a fresh flower, do the things that delight the senses. The same goes for making fresh scones - there is time to do so while waiting for a friend to drive over. I love her idea of collecting a variety of tea cups & saucers, displaying them, and inviting guests to look over them all and select the one that delights them to use while enjoying the tea. The narrative simply adds to the pleasure of the book. There is something for everyone & all ages, for one or a crowd. If you can only get one book about tea, this is the one!

Afternoon Tea!.......2007-05-12
what a great book! my idea of luxury is to attend afternoon tea in a great hotel-and now I can recreate some of the recipes (but not the harpist) at home. If you like tea, good food, and learning about creating a mood or an atmosphere for your guests, this little book is just great!
Nice book on English Tea.......2007-01-19
I enjoyed reading this book. It is a good starter book for those who would like to understand the ritual of English Tea and basic recipes of this time of day.
Good things do come in small packages.......2006-10-18
Lots of easy, great recipes. If for no other reason, you should buy this book just for the basic english muffin recipe and scone recipes.
The Best Resource for Tradition as well as Recipes!.......2006-08-09
A friend and I have recently begun taking tea and we love the true British and Victorian style of tea houses. I wanted to find a book for her that was a great resource on the history of afternoon and high tea as well as providing some recipes to go along with the information. This was the best book I found. No other goes into as much detail about the history of tea that this book does. The only downfall is that the only illustrations in the book are line drawings. There are no photos. Still, that didn't keep me from picking this book over several others that did have nice pictures, because in the end, the content of this book superceded any other.
Best of 4.......2005-01-05
I've recently bought 4 different tea books and this is the best one I have so far. There are a lot of the expected recipes for traditional tea time fare, with some minor omissions I felt. The print left something to be desired, some of it was blurred, but if you just want to buy 1 English tea book, this is it.

Book Description
Afternoon tea is one of the fastest-growing trends in America. Hotels, country inns, and tearooms are reviving this most relaxing repast. The customs and courtesies associated with serving tea are new to many Americans eager to use tea as an alternative to the business lunch or dinner, or as a social event. This book, written by one of America's foremost authorities on etiquette and protocol, is a fanciful, but correct, guide to the pleasures of tea -- at home and for business purposes. Filled with tea facts, history and etiquette, the book provides the simple rules that will help all readers glide through the most formal or casual tea, with aplomb. Tea rooms and shops, hotels and inns, tea importers, and Ms. Johnson's own licensed protocol consultants will be promoting this book outside bookstores.
Customer Reviews:
Tea and Etiquette by Johnson.......2007-05-09
This is a wonderful little book. If you enjoy "all things tea" then this is the book for you. Easily read, with details about proper etiquette for every type of social and business situation. It truly would be a nicer world if people (including children) were more often taught these things. Mrs. Johnson intersperses the chapters with interesting personal stories and recipes. I highly recommend it.
Great For A Hostess.......2007-03-22
I bought this book because I was never a tea drinker, but always felt left out as the popularity of now drinking tea started. I knew nothing about different types, how to serve it, what to serve with it, and just the simple things everyone knows. This book helped me with all of that and now I even like tea. After a few hours of reading, I know more about tea etiquette than anyone I know.
Taking Tea for Business and Pleasure.......2005-07-19
This is a very informative and enjoyable book. A pleasure to read, it gets right to the point and does not waste time. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in Tea for Business and Pleasure!
Finally a book with everything..........2004-01-26
I am starting a small catering business doing tea parties! This book is perfect! It has everything you always wanted to know about preparing, enjoying and serving tea. From the different types of tea from Cream Tea to High Tea and what to do with the tea bag after you've taken it out of your tea cup. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to serve and to enjoy a proper afternoon of tea. Thank you for being so thorough.
Good Reference on tea entertainment.......1999-12-01
I find this book very useful and informative. The author presents the material in a concise and down to earth manner. The etiquette portion of this book contains do's and do not's that leaves no questions. The tone of the book is conversational just like the topic it explains. If you are thinking about having a tea party for the first time or attending to one, this book is a must read!

Over Bridges Across Tables.......2006-04-28
This is a wonderful, intimate book that transports the reader to another time a place full of romance and wonder, but grounded in the human condition common to humanity. The experience of growing up in Murano and Venice is vividly and sensitively communicated in a way that makes the reader feel that he has lived the experience, but at the same time motivates one to travel there to see it, hear it, and feel it. But, of course, if you are from Murano, you already knew what I was going to say about the book anyway. An unforgettable read... highly recommended.

Kids' Rooms is a mixed bag: it contains some good design and safety tips, and it is one of the most attractive books in print on decorating kids' rooms. But it also contains tips like this: "If you prefer to use blankets on your child's bed, layer them for added warmth, adjusting the number according to the season." So although one might be tempted to regard this book as symptomatic of a slew of irritating trends (parents' urge to control and systematize children's lives, publishers' urge to stretch what could have been a very good magazine article to the breaking point of a costly full-length book), let's instead take a look at what it offers.
Jennifer Lévy's gorgeous photographs of gorgeous rooms, for one thing. If these beautifully lit, enthusiastically gotten-up bedrooms don't inspire you to cross the threshold into the most forbidden room in the house--ignoring the "DO NOT ENTER. THIS MEANS YOU, MOM" sign on the door--then nothing will. You'll be going at it with stencils and chalkboard paint in no time. The Bon Jovi posters in your 13-year-old's purple-and-pink room won't stand a chance.
The book also features several easy, step-by-step projects like lacy lampshades (spray-painted with a doily stencil), a harlequin-design floor (although the instructions specify using polyurethane varnish, which is expressly banned from use in kids' rooms by the "safety tip" four pages later), a folding screen room-divider (canvas stretchers form the frame, and handy patch pockets are sewn onto each panel), an easy-wipe-up vinyl "play tablecloth" with pinked edges and decorative weights at the corners, a dreamy organza pillow sham, and a handprint-decorated light-switch plate. --Liana Fredley
Book Description
It's an age-old dilemma--how to create a stylish room that still allows a kid to be a kid. Kids' Rooms solves the problem by presenting fresh, original ideas for creating fun yet functional spaces. Aimed at parents of 4- to 13-year-olds, this essential guide to pint-sized d cor offers practical counsel on the necessities of room layout--everything from furniture and fixtures to lighting and window treatments is covered. Color choices, fabrics, and themes are explored along with kid-friendly storage systems (a Folding Screen with Pockets!). In addition, Kids' Rooms showcases 15 fabulous and innovative rooms, that will pique the imagination. These featured rooms, such as the Log Cabin Retreat, the Purple Power Room, and Sheer Heaven, all blend form and function with charm and creativity. Best of all, Kids' Rooms includes numerous projects with easy-to-follow directions, demonstrating that redecorating need not be difficult or expensive. A must-have for anyone who's ever faced the challenge of decorating a kid's room.
Customer Reviews:
Not horrible, but there are better out there.......2006-01-26
The first 2/3 of the book deals with decorating elements -- light, color, furniture, and so on. If you are looking primarily for room after room of pictures to inspire you, this is not the one for you. There are only 9 projects in the 156 pages, and very little instruction on how to acheive a look, so if you are looking for a primer on mimicing a picture in the book -- its not for you. And as one reader noted, this manual is heavily girl-room centric. There are only 11 rooms profiled -- 8 of which are for girls only (highly reliant on pinks and purples, lace and sheers). The few "boy" rooms are nearer to gender neutral and are underdressed compared to the rest.
A Waste Of Money.......2005-10-08
Basically I found this book showing pictures of what not to do. When I am looking to decorate my child's room, I would not want it to look like most of the pictures in the book. Also most of the pictures were geared towards little girls and not boys. The book was just empty. I read/skimmed it in ten minutes and then threw it aside, thinking to myself, what a waste. If you want something special for your children's rooms don't waste your time and money on this one!
Simply the best book on this topic out there!.......2001-04-30
Jennifer Levy's book on kid's rooms is a much needed breath of fresh air in the home decorating book world. Looking for a book to inspire and teach me how to decorate my kid's room, I was shocked to find so many books with strange, difficult and outright unattractive ideas. This book is NOT one of those.
My favorite idea in the book is the folding screen with pockets...living in New York City, where space is a real premium, I found that I could slip books, toys and other items in the pockets while use the screen as a natural divider. Jennifer's instructions were simple, easy and the photographs were gorgeous.
I'm buying this book for my friends. It was definitely worth it.
