Book Description
Larry Forgione, hailed as the godfather of American cooking, is a man with one passion: to reintroduce the essential American flavors lost to us in the rush for newer, quicker, and better. This culinary visionary, largely responsible for the rebirth of farmers' markets across America and the availability of such quality ingredients as free-range chicken and the field green salad, has finally produced his master cookbook. Sure to become the primer that will inspire a whole new generation of American cooks, An American Place returns traditional American cuisine to its rightful place at the pinnacle of vigorous and soul-satisfying flavor.
Forgione takes the best flavors from the past and revitalizes them with the freshest, ripest, and richest native ingredients. Here are nearly three hundred mouthwatering recipes that celebrate the real bounty of American cooking: fish and shellfish from America's shores, everything from chicken, duck, and venison to beef, pork, and lamb from our forests and our farms, and wonderful breads and old-fashioned desserts from our bakeshops.
When food industry people want to know what's going to be happening in American food next year, they call Larry Forgione. In An American Place, in addition to revitalizing traditional fare, he also offers food that won't remind you of anything you've ever tasted before. Forgione's recipes will surprise you, delight you, inspire you, and show you what today's outstanding American ingredients, used imaginatively, can pro, duce: rich Roasted Corn and Beef Soup, an elegant Lobster and Fennel in Napa Cabbage Leaves, silken Pumpkin-Corn Pudding, Scalloped Ginger Sunchokes, Pork with Peppered Apples and Onions, tart and tangy Key Lime Chiffon Angel Food Cake.
His main courses, like Salmon with Cracked Wheat Crust, Breast of Chicken with Artichoke Sauce, and Grilled Spring Lamb with Rhubarb and Dandelion, offer complex and vibrant tastes that are light, healthful, and simple to cook. Dishes such as Sauteed Shrimp with Watercress, Warm Smoked Trout Salad, and Grilled Chicken with Summer Vegetable Compote will bring you delicious and impressive results without your having to spend hours in the kitchen,
Forgione's American food not only tastes good, it feels good, with comfort food like sublime cod cakes and tartar sauce, and the creamiest of golden hashed brown potatoes. There's food that will remind you of the homey kind of favorites that your mother cooked (or wished she had): a thick, pureed vegetable soup, warm chicken salad, Apple Pandowdy, Spiced Ginger Ice Cream. Here also are recipes that belong to the "bring them back alive" school of American heritage: dishes like Waldorf Salad, Old-Fashioned Caesar Salad, Baked Lobster Savannah, and Fried Ipswich Clams that Forgione returns to their former greatness.
And here also are some rare and wondrous dishes from the past for which the wisdom was knowing when to leave well enough alone. The Old-Fashioned Strawberry Shortcake recipe offered here is just the way it started out years ago: the best unsweetened whipped cream, the ripest berries, and a home-baked biscuit.
Forgione's passionate return to freshness has given birth to such cottage industries as local goat cheese producers, growers of specialty berries and field lettuces, the proliferaton of smoked and cured fish and shellfish of all kinds, the return of old-fashioned apple varieties, even the raising of buffalo, which he brought back to the American menu nearly a full century since it last appeared.
An American Place is, hands down, the most important American cookbook of the decade.

An American Gem of A Cookbook.......2004-08-21
Called the godfather of American cooking, I'm shocked there are no reviews yet of this very fine cookbook. Forgione sought to find out and restore and rejuvanate American cuisine along with his good friend, James Beard.
What follows is an unbelievable succulent and diverse recipe collection of the very best from America's streams, rivers, oceans, fields, forests. He was vital in beginning what now is taken as culinary givens: free range chicken, farmers markets, specialty food purveyors, etc.
These are taken either back to an original recipe, or combined and enhanced in new, fresh ways. The collection is sizeable, almost 300 and features such as: Senate Bean Soup; Hudson Valley Camembert Crisp Salad with Olive Oil Vinaigrette and Apple-Pear Conserve; Lobster and Rice Fritters; Lobster and Fennel in Cabbage Leaves; Grilled Mahi-Mahi with Pineapple-Chile Barbecue Sauce; Salmon with Cracked Wheat Crust and Grain Mustard Sauce; Southwest-Style Whitefish in Tortillas with Poblano Cream; Roast Spring Chicken with Barbecued Onions; Breast of Chicken with Artichoke Sauce; Roast Goose with Plum Glaze; Asparagus in Ambush; Grilled Lamb Chops, New Potatoes, and Asparagus with Mint and Black Pepper Vinaigrette; Banana Betty; Peach and Strawberry Cobbler with Spiced Topping;
There is much more in this rare find---Waldorf Salad, Strawberry Shortcake, Spoon Cornbread --- rare loved American classics--assured this is best recipe around.
Find yourself one of these used---you'll use it lots!

Nice Type Reference .......2005-03-22
A very nice resource for type, style, and era. However, from an instructional or educational perspective it is essentially a picture book. It leaves me with plenty of questions regarding the entire subject area. But all in all it is still handy as a reference and was worth the price.

A waste of my money :(.......2007-08-09
This book was very disappointing to me. I am an intermediate crocheter, and I bought this book primarily for the patterns. Although at first glance a few of them seemed worthwhile, in the long run, I have had this book for at least 6 months and haven't even started one project from it. (Which is very rare for me.) The instructions are o.k., the pictures are o.k. but neither are great. It is also very discouraging that the yarn used in most of the projects shown is very expensive and hard to find. This is not a book I would recommend buying online. Go to your local bookstore, and check it out to see if it's right for you. If that's not an option and you want a fun book for crochet I would suggest my all time favorite: Debbie Stoller's "Stitch N Bitch: Happy Hooker".
Fun and Informative Book.......2007-05-13
This book is really fun to read. The author has a great way of getting and holding your attention. Plus, she provides great information on how to crochet and has some really great patterns included.
More than I'd expected.......2007-04-29
After getting and looking in this book, I like it more than I thought I did when I first saw it at a bookstore. It contains 27 patterns of assorted types, not just appearal, and also Part 1 has 6 chapters of 80 pages with helpful information including how-to, stitch guides, garment sizing guidelines, hooks, and more in what looked like such a small book at first. It's packed with good info, not just the usual blah blah, and enough patterns I think are cute enough to make, and I'm picky. ;) Well worth its price, in my opinion.
Nice patterns (need more real photos).......2007-02-21
It has nice patterns and the explanations are clear, but I was expecting more color photographs, a lot of pink-kind of print in the book
Just ok...a decent read, uninteresting patterns........2007-02-15
I am an impulsive craft book buyer and am trying to beef up my collection of crochet books. There isn't one pattern in this book I'd make. I do like the prose style and I've found the book quite enjoyable to read. I dislike the paper quality and agree with another poster that the center section of color pictures is a bit scant.

very cool book.......2004-11-18
Basically A Stitch in TIme is full of reprints of period knitting and crochet patterns along with the picture that appeared with the pattern when it was first published. SInce handcrafts tend to be time less (ie a sweater looks the same now as it did 100 years ago) I have to commend Waller on compiling this. The patterns here have a good amount of period feel to them. You get shoulders so high and pointed that they look as if they could take and eye out, a whole section on one piece swim suits and more interesting sleeves and collars than I can count.
I particularly liked the section on hats. Many of them are asymmetrical and parallel what ever style hat was popular at the time. No berets and skullcaps fit all approach here.
This is a really neato book. The patterns are very distinctive. I recommend it if you are curious about older patterns or want to make something that doesn't fit the normal knitting mold.

I love it!.......2002-03-05
This is a great book, beautiful patterns, every skill level. It's definitely one of those books, where you sit down and flip through and say, "Oh I want to make that...and that....ooh, and that!"
Somthing for everyone and every skill........1997-08-22
This book is a must have for the casual as well as the expert crocheter. It contains beautifully laid out illustrations as well as easy to follow directions. The projects fit into the "something for everyone" category ranging from simple little things to more time consuming projects. It's great when you've forgotten a birthday or need that special something for a Christmas gift
A guide to not abusing your copy of this book :).......1997-06-04
Creative Crochet was the first of all my prized collection of crochet books that I dutifully dragged with me to class all through my last two years of college. Creative Crochet is a joy to work from, The patterns are well laid-out in line-by-line instructions with great color photos so you can see the finished project before you dedicate hours to the craft. Their diagrams are also useful for constructing some of the more complex designs. I've made several very satisfactory presents from projects in this book, but best of all, it fits right in my knapsack with my notebooks and my crochet hooks so I won't be bored in class

my inner crochet artist comes to life.......2004-06-20
What an awesome book. It didn't take much reading before I had to go out and get a hook and some yarn in order to try to co-create with Noreen Crone-Findlay. Although I hadn't held a crochet hook in over 25 years, her clear instructions and dazzling designs kept me motivated. Lest you be overly impressed, I did begin with Chubby Lady Bug on page 109, an adorable little being, and perfect for a beginner, or someone returning to crochet.
I can guarantee that if you like dolls in any of their creative manifestations, or like crochet, you will be held and nurtured by this wonderful book.
I love this book!!.......2004-06-05
I love this book. It's absolutely beautiful and magically inspiring. I want to start at the beginning and make every doll in it. Noreen gives plenty of info for beginners and those who like to work from a pattern yet leaves plenty of room for those who want to take her work off in their own direction. If you love dolls and crochet, do not fail to own this book.
Very Disappointing.......2004-05-24
I was very excited when I found out that Noreen Crone-Findlay was going to do an entire book on crocheted dolls. However after buying the book , andgetting a chance to go through it...I must say that I am very disappointed. It's perhaps the most disappointing book I've ever purchased. The dolls in it are very amateur in their presentation. Few of her examples/projects rise to a standard equal to that of someone just learning the craft. Most of the projects seem like an explosion of yarn. Your craft book dollars would be best spent elsewhere.
Crochet Art at it's best.......2004-04-04
I will try to keep it to a few words here but it will be hard. If you love dolls then you MUST get this book and if you like whimsical, creative, one of a kind projects you must get this book. A definite asset to your crochet library. Includes step by step very complete instructions for each doll, Hurry once the word gets out I am positive the supply will run out.

before "freeform crochet".......2005-02-16
This is an older crochet book, but still has plenty of good patterns. M's Calder gives the basic instructions on the various projects, but leaves the details (colors, design) up to the reader. The crocheted items are colorful as well as inspiring. Most projects are made in the (American) single crochet (British double crochet and are easy to understand and create. I recommend this book highly to spice up your crocheting.

Crochet and Creative Design.......2007-10-08
This book is okay. It has alot of stitch patterns to use for creating your own designs, unfortunately the pictures are black and white so it is a little hard to make out what they look like. The beginning gives a few tips regarding gauge in designing. It also has illustrations to learn how to crochet and do the basics. The section on how to design did not really tell me anything new and it is not very extensive. It also has a section on how to Tunisian Crochet and it gives addition stitch patterns. It has a few pages of charts for color work and embroidery. It has a very small filet section followed by several pages of motif patterns.
This book also gives you stitch patterns for edgings and insertions. The Designers Guide gives a few helpful tips regarding designing clothing such as: A-line shaping, armhole and neck shaping and buttonholes. It also supplies a guide for standard body size measurements for children. If you are completely new to designing you may find this book helpful. And for the more advanced crocheters it is a satisfactory guide for stitch patterns, motifs and edgings.
Great crochet textures!!!!!!.......2002-06-20
This book doesn't have patterns, but beautiful textures and motifs and granny squares that you can use to make your own patterns. Perfect for a creative person that wants to make up their own pattern but needs a little help or inspiration.
