Wonderful Value.......2007-08-26
I was so anxious to get his book, and I was delighted with the condition when I received it. It is just like a new book, and the delivery was swift - I would definitely buy from this seller again.
A late train, a provincial theater, a great actress.......2006-03-21
This one is mixed, though let me say from the outset, it's worth reading.
The bad, or at least not-so-good?
The center of this mystery drains your energy, possibly in part because of the almost Tolstoyesque proliferation of characters - almost, because nobody in this novel has a half-dozen nicknames you have to keep straight. There is also a heavy and almost repetitive ladling of timetables and alibis that a more stringent editor might have pared down.
Too, you might get a bit tired of the way the New Zealand police force sucks up to Alleyn, especially since he seems never to be wholly on top of his form. (As another reviewer says, except in one letter from Alleyn, there's no Fox to act as an intelligent sounding board. When at his boss's side, Fox serves to reveal Alleyn's sharpness, and without Fox, much of that sharpness can't surface.)
The good side?
There are moments that bring the story to life. Amazon and the publisher have enabled the "search in this book" feature above: search on `fascination train' without the single quotes and read the page. Late-night, cross-country passenger train rides are rare in my country, the US, but I've been on a couple, and Marsh clearly has captured the essence.
Plus, the backstage world is well depicted - you get to see a little about how the technical side of theater lives and breathes. The novel revolves around a fabricated tech "accident" and there's a bit of foreshadowing that brings depth to a later statement, "when men are working aloft. I remember the stage-manager told me the [stage] hands always have their tools tied to their wrists." The reality of backstage is that when everything is perfect, nobody really notices - and when something goes awry, the stagehands could not feel worse.
There is also a crystal moment between Alleyn and Carolyn Dacres, a picnic excursion that the smitten Alleyn orchestrates to soften the usual grilling session. Here, Marsh expresses both the essential goodness (and grief) of the actress and the essential attraction of the New Zealand back country.
There are also memorably complex characters. Is it coincidence that surname of the Oxford-educated Maori physician, Dr. Rangi Te Pokiha, is about as close as you can get to "paheka," the Maori name for European settlers on the ranges of their land? And don't miss St. John Ackroyd, the acrid comedian.
And the last lines of the book, quoting a letter from Miss Dacres to Alleyn sent to him after all has been said and done, presents a touchingly human denouement.
I guess this is a roundabout way of saying, all Marsh is good; some are better than this; but this has fine moments.
Not Quite In The First Rank of Marsh Novels, But Lots Of Fun Nonetheless.......2005-10-15
Published in 1937, VINTAGE MURDER is the first of several novels in which Ngaio Marsh sends Inspector Alleyn to her homeland of New Zealand--and, not unexpectedly, with lethal results.
Alleyn travels by train in the company of Carolyn Dacres, celebrated actress, and her theatrical company, and when a possible assault and a curious robbery plague the company en route they turn to him help. Unfortunately, however, these incidents prove so much prelude, and a party following the company's opening night in Middleton proves deadly indeed.
Marsh is particularly well known for creating remarkably credible characters, and certainly such creations as Carolyn Dacres, St. John Ackroyd, Francis Liverslidge, Dr. Te Pokiha, and Bob Parsons prove her talents; on this occasion, however, she does not quite manage to extend those talents to the entire cast, and in certain instances I found it a bit difficult to tell one individual from the other, something very unusual for a Marsh novel. In any case, her sense of location is as powerful in VINTAGE MURDER as it is in the very best of her works, and her means of murder is classic Marsh, something that would be totally unbelievable in any context except the one she creates.
Final thoughts on the book: while not quite in the same class as OVERTURE TO DEATH, NIGHT AT THE VULCAN, BLACK AS HE'S PAINTED, and DEAD WATER, VINTAGE MURDER is nonetheless a truly enjoyable work, sure to please both old fans and newcomers alike.

Alleyn's first visit to New Zealand.......2002-10-27
Roderick Alleyn of New Scotland Yard is visiting New Zealand on holiday for health reasons in 1937 - a very long journey in distance, then and now, and in those days by sea voyage. He'll be away from Fox, Bailey, Thompson, and the rest of his team for quite a while - more than 3 months in New Zealand itself. The story opens during a long train trip across South Island with some of his fellow passengers from the ship - the Carolyn Dacres English Comedy Company.
Ms. Dacres is the sparkling leading lady; her middle-aged, humdrum husband, Alfred Meyer, runs the business end of the company. Hailey Hambledon, Carolyn's handsome leading man, wants her to arrange a divorce with Meyer and marry him. Carolyn refuses, claiming religious scruples; it's hard to say if Carolyn loves Hailey, or is merely being diplomatic. Some of the character actors have been gambling heavily. Valerie Ganes, a mediocre actress (a dilettante with a rich father) suffered the loss of a large amount of cash, but isn't keen on even a quasi-official investigation. Meyer's business partner, Mason, seems habitually worried about money.
Meyer *seems* oblivious to all this, and after a successful run in Middleton (fictional city), arranges an elaborate birthday party for Carolyn, with an eye toward publicity, and including a flashy gimmick of lowering a huge champagne bottle from the rafters. But someone apparently decides to launch a venture by aiming the bottle at Meyer's head.
At this point in his career, Alleyn had only had one murder case entangled with the world of the theatre - _Enter a Murderer_, which occurred 2 years before this story opens - so the matter of the earlier case (and the name of the murderer) are mentioned several times. In fact, a character actress in the company was a minor character in the earlier book. While one can enjoy and follow the plot of _Vintage Murder_ without having read the earlier story, it has added depth after reading the earlier book - and if they're read out of order, the solution of the earlier book is given in the 1st chapter of this book.
While this is only the second 'theatrical' case Alleyn investigated, several more were to come, and other changes took place shortly after the events in this book. Taking ship for the return journey to England as _Artists in Crime_, the next book, opened, Alleyn was to meet Agatha Troy for the first time. :)
Good, but I miss Fox & Co.!.......2000-07-06
A good read, but I miss the comraderie and banter that goes on between Inspectors Alleyn and Fox, as well as the fingerprint and photography experts, Bailey and Thompson. It's strange, because I didn't feel the same way about _When in Rome_, where Alleyn is traveling outside of England, and therefore is without his usual force. Anyway, it's still a good read. Once again, the theatre becomes the stage for a murder, when a carefully timed birthday gag goes wrong and ends up killing someone who doesn't seem to have an enemy in the world. Taking place in New Zealand, Marsh gives the reader a good introduction to her native country.

It is just crying to be used as a Hollywood script.......2004-01-15
Maureen Sarsfield wrote a total of three books, which were picked up by American publishers, in the 1940's. Two of them are murder mysteries starring Scotland Yard's Inspector Lane Parry, a handsome and undeniably married detective. Murder at Beechlands, the sequel to Murder at Shots Hall (originally called Green December Fills the Graveyard) was originally called A Party for None in England and A Party for Lawty in the United States. Sarsfield's life itself is a bit of a mystery, as no one seems to know what became of her.
Inspector Lane Parry finds himself alone in a raging blizzard after he accidently drove his car into a ditch. He comes upon Beechlands, a hotel filled with what he at first takes to be inmates of a mental institution. But the dead body of Wing Commander Lawton (Lawty) Lawrence appears in the snow, and the hunt is on. Even though the crime is not in Parry's jurisdiction, he realizes he is going to have to keep the "inmates" around until the proper authorities can be called...and the phone lines have been cut to the hotel:
"Two miles there, two miles back. That would mean leaving all these people (and Lawty's body) by themselves, to get up to their own devices and occasions, lawful or unlawful, for at least two hours, by the time he'd done explaining everything to the Ditchit policeman, who was worse than useless, according to Miss Killigrew."
Murder at Beechlands is a cross between an Alfred Hitchcock story, and an Edgar Allen Poe tale. Intensely psychological, each character and each moment of the ungodly long night that follows the murder is filled with lurking, crashing, smashing, and deep fear. Sarsfield does a great job of keeping the reader "in the dark," even as she supplies clues and counter clues for the clever Inspector Parry to sift through. Her characterization is simply wonderful...very nineteen forties, and one could see either Betty Davis or Marilyn Monroe in starring roles.
The Rue Morgue Press has chosen wisely once again with this Maureen Sarsfield thriller. It is just crying to be used as a Hollywood script, but until that day arrives (if it ever does), it simply exists as a genuine mystery told in the original vein of the genre. A great read!

A relaxed style that makes this mystery an enjoyable experience........2007-03-04
Glyn Carr is actually a pseudonym for Showell Styles used for his Abercrombie Lewker mysteries, featuring a Shakespearian actor/mountain climber. Styles' first Lewker mystery, entitled DEATH ON MILESTONE BUTTRESS, which was published in 1951, was such a success that his British publisher Geoffrey Bles, immediately signed him on for more. The net result was fourteen more mysteries, until Styles ran out of ideas. Lewker gets to travel to Switzerland, the Himalayas, Austria, Scandinavia, and Majorca, as well as Cumberland fells, the setting of THE YOUTH HOSTEL MURDERS .
As well as his credentials as a noted Shakespearian actor, Abercrombie Lewker, deceptively short and stout, also served in Department Seven of the Special Commando Branch of British Intelligence during World War II. He and his lovely wife, Georgina are a devoted and playful couple. Georgie calls Lewker Filthy, but not for matters of hygiene. Lewker and Georgie are headed to stay with Sir Walter Haythornthwaite in Birkerdale near Gosforth. Almost at once they begin hearing stories about the place, which eventually will lead Lewker into a murder investigation of two young climbers:
"'Ay.' The landlord, leaning across the bar with a cautious eye on the shadows by the fireplace, spoke in a confidential whisper. 'There's some folk hereabouts says 'twas witchcraft as sent my truck off that road. Coffin's Pike's an evil place, they say-'twas why the lead mines failed. I'm not one to believe in such things, but it's got about as witchcraft made that young fellow fall to his death, too. Old Ben says-'"
Carr/Styles goes to great lengths to describe the mountain village, as well as the art of climbing, in this compelling whodunit. Lewker is an unlikely hero, but his obvious talents and the magnetic force of his personality endear him to the youth hostel where he goes "undercover." Styles' talent for the "red herring" jumps out at the reader. He tucks his murderer so far into the plot that the reader spends an inordinate amount of time guessing and revising guesses as to who and where the murderer lurks. Characters are entertaining; the plot and action are non-stop; and yet there is a relaxed style that makes this mystery an enjoyable experience.

Thank you, Rue Morgue Press!.......2004-06-19
As a librarian I'm always looking for inspiration when ordering books for my branch library. (Anyone can buy a best-seller.) I'd like to think I'm introducing a whole new group of readers to the Little sisters' mysteries. They are wonderfully wacky, creative, and just plain entertaining! After discovering their appeal I promptly ordered every title available and can't wait for Rue Morgue Press (bless them!) to print the rest.

Good read from a good author.......2001-07-25
Perhaps I am a bit spoiled with The Murder She Wrote mysteries, but I found this book to somewhat lack character and plot development. While the book is well written and esily understandable, the ending lacked much to be desired. To many twists and turns, much like the Runaway Mountain at Six Flags. All in all a good read and a good introduction to the author.

Great Resource.......2007-04-06
I recently purchased this book to replace a previous edition. This is the best resource that I have found written in layman terms so that anyone can understand the process, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. If you or someone you know is newly diagnosed with cancer, it is well worth purchasing this book.
A book everyone should have.......2007-01-22
Almost all of us have a friend or relative who is affected by cancer. So very often we rely on uninformed sources for the information we have on their problems and on possible solutions and outcomes. This book is a real source of technical and up-to-date facts presented in a way which is accessible to anyone who is prepared to make just a little effort to understand mediacl language. As a former cancer patient I strongly recommend it.
Highly Recommended.......2006-07-24
This is an excellent source of information, given at an appropriate level of detail: not too technical, yet comprehensive enough to be useful. I first purchased it when my mother was diagnosed with cancer and I'm now revisiting it since my son was diagnosed with cancer. Part Five of the book describes treating the common cancers and covers over 51 types of cancer. At the end of each of the 51 sections is an incredibly helpful subsection "The Most Important Questions You Can Ask". For my mother's treatment, I brought the book with me during the doctor's consultation and asked each question that was listed. It opened the door for honest, realistic communication between the doctor, my mother and our family on a host of issues. I intend to bring the book with me for the doctor's consultation with my son. If you or a loved one has cancer, I highly recommend this book. It will serve as a valuable guide and help you to stay focused and informed when the riot of emotions threatens to overwhelm and incapacitate you.
A Comprehensive and Readable Book on Cancer.......2006-03-16
I received a an earlier edition of this book in 1991 when I was diagnosed with colon cancer and found that the information on cancer was presented in such a way that most people could understand. Since that time, whenever I hear of someone having cancer, I buy a copy of the book and give it to them. The book is very comprehensive and besides covering all the different sites for cancer as well as treatment, it is well illustrated and has many references.
the best general info out there.......2003-11-18
I am a nurse, and I recommend this book to almost everyone. It is written at a decent level - not dumbed down, but not too technical. Information is current, helpful and practical. For less than 25 bucks, it is a bargain! Family and friends will benefit as well as people with cancer.

Bland missing from title.......2007-09-24
This was a very disappointing purchase for me. After making 8 dinners and 1 soup from this book, I can finally throw it out. I did give it a shot but the recipes are from tasteless to downright disgusting!
I star recipes as I make them - 4 being the highest. Each recipe got from 1-2 stars, and one just got the word "horrible."
Enough said.
Look elsewhere if you want one-dish meals that TASTE GOOD!
You CAN judge a cookbook by the recipes..........2007-06-16
A different reviewer asked "How many "Moms" do you know who make Cajun Macque Choux?". Well, meet one. I made this easy dish when my in-laws were in town - corn, bacon, bell peppers, tomatoes, shrimp, cream. All prepared with a knife, cutting board, and one very large skillet. Delicious, easy, and quickly devoured by my dad-in-law. Recipe title: not typical. Food: delicious.
I echo the fact that this is not elaborate food - but it is good, tasty, and easy to prepare. I own FAR too many cookbooks, but this is one I use on a very regular basis. The Chili Mac - made with ground turkey, pureed tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, beans, and maccaroni - is easy to make, filling, low-fat, and loved by my 3 yr old, first grader, and picky husband.(I leave out the jalepeno and hand my husband a bottle of hot sauce at the table instead) A little chopping, open some cans, follow the directions - better than a box dinner any day...
Other family favorites include: Black Bean Soup; Pasta e Fagiole; Chinese Chicken Noodle Bowl; Italian Wedding Soup; Barbecued Bean Cornbread Supper; Curried Chicken and Broccoli Pilaf; Skillet Shepard's Pie; Mexican Lasagne; Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad; Thai Beef Noodle Salad.
So - who's this book for: new cooks who want good food without fuss; experienced cooks who want good food without fuss; family cooks who want food kids will eat or recipes kids can help with. Singles and small households - prepare for a LOT of leftovers!
This would make a great gift for someone starting out - presented with a baking dish or a skillet.
A Great Little Cookbook.......2006-06-04
I was looking around for a really good cookbook that would give me some quick comfort foods to incorporate into our family meals. This book was a great buy--it is at a great price, and in it you'll find some good recipes and some really good reading, too! Andrea Chesman puts in all sorts of interesting tid-bits about how the meals came to be in the larger context of their original culture.
I also like this book because the meals inside are a lot more exotic than you'll find in most one-dish recipe books, including all kinds of moms--East Indian moms, Cajun moms, Midwest moms, Italian moms--it's a varied selection which is quite refreshing. It also doesn't have the gobs and gobs of butter and condensed soup goop that you find in most one-dish books, a' la Taste of Home, which to me is a relief. If that's what I was looking for, I'd get a magazine subscription or look up recipes at Cambells.com. Of course sometimes I *do* go to Cambells.com--but sometimes I want to cook and assemble a comfort food with the loads of taste that come from not having taken so many shortcuts. That's why I like this book--it gives you a relatively easy meal without compromising on actual cooking, all the while giving you that wonderful one-dish comfort food result. I'd also like to note that although some of the ingredients are not all that common to the average mom's pantry, you don't have to do mail-order to find them.
So four stars and a good buy for the money.
p.s. One dish refers to the fact that only one dish is served at dinner, not one dish to make it. (duh)
p.s.s. As I grew up in Southern Louisiana... um, well... My mom DID make it.
Great book for a beginning cook - not so much for the rest of us.......2006-04-30
I bought this book because a) I loved Andrea Chesman's "The Garden-Fresh Vegetable Cookbook," and b) I was writing an article on cooking good meals for busy people. The concept of one-dish suppers and comfort food seemed like a good match.
I have to admit that the book lives up to its title; many of these dishes are similar to ones that my mother might have made: beef stew, chicken and dumplings, mac 'n' cheese with ham and green peas, pot roast with vegetables. There are a few nods to international cuisine, but all in all, I didn't find much in it that was either new or exciting enough to make me want to add the ingredients to my next shopping list. Experienced cooks, and those with adventuresome palates, may not find much of interest in its pages.
On the other hand, it would be a great book for someone new to cooking. Buy it for a niece or nephew going off to college or moving away from home. My copy will go to my daughter, who is just getting interested in learning to cook.
Don't let the tittle fool you, the recipes inside are not old fashion recipes coming out of grandma's recipe box.......2006-02-23
Of all places where I spotted this book was in a new age shop, while vacationing on the Big Island of Hawaii. I was pretty surprised about the recipes in the book, which are pretty modern recipes because of the cover I was expecting old school recipes. It is a pretty easy, clean, and very simple read on the recipes. The book covers from American to Asian to Italian and other ethic recipes. As a beginner cook, this book has been great. I own the 2nd book, Mom's Best Desserts, and looking forward to ordering the 3rd book that is coming out soon. I have to agree with the previous review that My mother never made any of these recipes but I wish she did.
