I have read and liked all of the Hillerman books. Its great to pick up the CDs and load them up on my IPod and enjoy them one more time. Great for the commute or walks.

Timely story if you or someone you know is fighting the battle.......2007-09-16
A superior read and what I needed when I was making the journey to surviorship from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (1991). Encouraged me to focus on the task that was at hand rather than spiraling into darkness. For what it is worth, read/give this and don't buy/read the Love, Medicine & Miracles (B. Siegel, 1986), which subtly implied all bad things happen because of a negative attitude. Guess what folks, if you are diagnosed with cancer or other life threatening disease, you are going to have a lot of crappy attitude days and then panicking because you just had a negative thought is a bit counter-productive.
Should be required reading in medical school.......2007-07-15
I don't recall when this book was first published, or who first told me about it. But, it definitely improved my outlook on things several decades ago when I was quite ill--not incurably, or terminally, but a grave cost to quality of life, all the same.
Reading this, in the early 1980s, I think, was the first time I'd realized that my own attitude could actually make a difference in the outcome of my health, and the rate at which my injury healed. It was a revelation--one that several doctors were not to pleased to hear--and one which helped me enormously.
Of course personal attitude is far from everything. Having lost a friend to Hodgkin's--which was totally curable when he was diagnosed in early stage one--I'm painfully familiar with the risks individuals sometimes take in believing in phony spiritual cures and natural methods.
Still, there's a lot more to be said for state of mind and good humor than many physicians are willing to admit, or discuss with patients, even now. If this book is not assigned reading in the first year of medical school--and every year after--it should be.

My husband has been very ill over the last 7 years and although the doctors were sure he's be dead by now... he's not and doing better every day. He has Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, ITP, Lymphodema, as of now, everything it either in remmission or under control and I believe this book "Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient" and "Cancer: 50 Essential Things to Do: Revised and Updated Edition" and "Getting Well Again: The Bestselling Classic About the Simontons' Revolutionary Lifesaving Self- Awareness Techniques" As well as the DVD "the Secret" have not only made a difference in his health, but in our lives and those of our family.
Keep things in prospective, give it to a higher authority and LAUGH!
Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient by Cousins.......2004-05-14
This work contains numerous strategies aimed at maintaining
health into the far future. For instance, the author explains
how cancer occurs more frequently in patients with significant
grief, anger or fear in their daily lives. He indicates the
importance of physician contact with the patient. The importance
of a balanced diet is articulated. The author decries poor
nutrition in some hospitals . i.e. white bread and bleached flour
Specific medical tests are referenced i.e. SED RATE
The sed rate is the speed with which red blood cells settle in a test tube measured in milli-liters~ severity of inflammation.
He explains the importance of Vitamin C in collagen maintenance.
This work would be valuable for any middle-age or elderly person
seeking to maintain health far into the future.
Started the mind-body revolution -- still relevant.......2004-01-05
This book revolutionized the way Americans think about health and health care. Diagnosed with a life-threatening and incurable condition, Cousins checked himself out of the hospital and basically healed himself with laughter, rest and Vitamin C. A few years later, he recovered from a major heart attack on his own and wrote about that, too.
These books jump-started the whole field of mind-body medicine. Hundreds of books have followed in its tradition, including mine, The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Illness. Anatomy of an Illness holds up well. I just re-read it and it's still relevant.
Not everything here will apply to most readers, because Cousins was a major cultural figure with many physicians among his friends. Not everyone would have his self-confidence or his sources of support. But his ideas and his approach are more needed than ever today.

written in an earlier time, this book is an amazing time capsule and portrait of a man who was known as the thomas keller of his day. the size and lack of bulk almost make the impression of cook book as coloring book, but the depth of thought in the recipes and personal illustrations in the book make up for it. a celebrity chefs celebrity chef, his knowledge echoes through the years to teach lessons to all cooks.
Not a cookbook, but a reminiscence.......2006-11-30
This book might best be described as a keepsake of the
famous restaurant La Pyramide. Created in Vienne by
Fernand Point, it was the home school of Paul Bocuse,
Georges Perrier, the Troisgros brothers and a whole
generation of French chefs. It wouln't be an
exaggeration to say that nouvelle cuisine began here.
What we have in this book is a collection of aphorisms
from Point himself, a biography, photographs, menus,
sketches and finally some recipes. The recipes are not
intended for beginners-they are notes from one chef to
another about how something is done. If you don't know
your beurre noisette from a sole in the pan, you won't
learn it here.
No matter, this is a chance to find out what you don't
know and to think about what's worth knowing. Think of
it as culinary inspiration.

Point - The Father of Modern French Cuisine.......2004-06-26
If you are looking for loads of pretty pictures and precise recipes this book is probably not for you. But if you have an interest in the true origins of modern French cuisine, herein lie the recipes and the history of one of the most influential chefs of the 20th century. From a small town eighteen miles south of Lyon, he gained three Michelin stars for his restaurant la Pyramide and trained the next generation of French culinary stars, including Paul Bocuse, Alain Chapel, Louis Outhier and Jean and Pierre Troisgros. It's a great book but the recipes are more notes on how to proceed, based on an assumption that that the reader will have the level of culinary proficiency required to execute them. They are transitional showing the movement from traditional French cuisine with it's foundation of roux based sauces into simpler builds using tapioca, arrowroot or creme fraiche reductions. And of course what we all now think of as the recent discovery of organic, fresh and seasonal products, was in fact the basis for his culinary mastery as far back as 1920. I am on my second copy, having worn out the first which I bought new in 1974. If you can find a copy - get it!

The REAL Chef of all time.......2000-04-06
Fernand Point was the greatest chef of all time. This is especially evident when one considers that his apprentices included Paul Bocuse and Jean Banchet. Point was so driven a cuisinier that he literally died in his kitchen, of a heart attack. During the German occupation of France, rather than serve the German officers, he politely closed his restaurant, one of few to do so. A master of simplicity, it was he who started the lightening of the heavy classical style, while never compromising essential flavors; in fact, he made the essential flavors come through like they never had before! He embodied all the familiar notions one has of an old-school French chef: Tyrant, drinker, and an absolute fanatic for detail and precision. This book is a must for anyone who is, or takes his or her self as a serious gastronome. An absolute must.
