Book Description

In the near future, the world has become home to certain people with amazing genetic structures-giving them powers that make them frighteningly superior to normal humans. The Night Watchman was the first. Somewhere in San Francisco, he was out there-stopping a bank robbery, saving a kid from a runaway truck, whatever was needed. More 'superheroes' followed, though nobody called them that-but then came the bad ones, those who took pleasure in using their powers for ill. In response came the M-Tac squads: cops specially trained to fight these super-lethal enemies. Not a typical comic book superhero novel, John Ridley introduces a brave new world of heroes and villains, and shows that there's no such thing as a Good Guy or a Bad Guy.

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-31

Superbeings exist, but after a cataclysmic incident between two powerful foes, a hero and a villain, takes out a city, they are banned from the United States.

Cities have elite police units trained to deal with outbreaks of superbeing activity. Those who serve on these units, taken from the best of the best of SWAT teams have short life expectancies.

Super strong, fire blasters, telepathic mind controllers and more are what they must face.

Soledad O'Rourke is working on a special type of gun to deal with said bad guys, but is taking a lot of heat from her department and its ties to the usual weapons supplies, and people that don't trust new technology.

When she survives a trip or two, she earns the name 'Bullet', and dedicates herself to her job.

Everything, of course, is not as black and white as it seems, of course.

1 out of 5 stars Bitter much?.......2007-08-01

I haven't seen this much pent up anger in a book since Order of the Pheonix. Soledad is an angry, two demensional, bigot who's a Mary Sue to top off the nastiness that exudes from her. Her coworkers are angry. The boyfriend is a nonentity. The Mutants (whom we get so little background about) seem to be the only faction in this story that have a right to be angry since they're being hunted down regardless of their personal histories.

Anger about Los Angeles. It's so plainly obvious that the author hates LA with a passion that makes his blood boil. Why, oh why, did he set it there? He even hates the nice days in town. I went to college in LA and know first hand that it's not like what appears on tv, but holy cats, this guy really doesn't like it. The pure venom in the narration makes it that much more difficult to put up with such borederline protagonists.

Also, is this a book or a script? The use of colons instead of verbs was simply poor form. I understand that Mr. Ridley is a tv writer, which is great, but he needs to understand that prose and scripts are different beasts, or his editor should be fired.

I picked up this book because it had a great title, which is the only thing that was any good about it.

2 out of 5 stars Not the Worst, but Just This Side of Unreadable.......2007-02-28

Think X-Men, only without the interesting characters or any of the humanity of the story. Also, the "hero" of the book wants to exterminate all mutants. Others have explained the plot, so I'll just get to what I think works and mostly doesn't work about this book.

For a book about super-humans, there sure aren't a lot of them in this thing. The glimpses we do get to see of "metahumans" usually end with them getting shot by the main "protagonist" Soledad O'Roark, who is perhaps the most unlikable character ever put to paper. She embodies the underlying theme in the story, which is that everybody on the planet is bigoted and racist, even minorities, and sometimes human rights have to be stripped away in order for "normal" people to feel safe.

I found it odd that the author would write a book with superheroes in it, then chalk the main character so full of hatred and racism it's impossible to like her. Presumably most of the people who would read a book with super-humans in it like superheroes, and the story here is pretty alienating in that respect.

We never really get to know any of the characters, much less care about them, save the fact that I found myself getting progressively angrier and angrier at Soledad's "only good mutie is a dead mutie" attitude. Even at the end of the book she has no redeeming characteristics, and the later chapters actually make her more vicious and nasty, if that's possible.

At one point Soledad says, "I don't have friends." Well no kidding; she's wholly unlikable and has no redeeming characteristics. I found it impossible to understand why on earth the love interest in the story would be able to put up with her nastiness for more than three minutes without setting her on fire.

I suppose I just don't understand why one would write a book from exclusively this point of view, especially being an African American. The moral of the story seems to be "oppress whoever makes you feel safer." The hope of someone's redemption and the "what's going to happen next" kept me reading this book, but when it was all said and done I was definitely sorry I had. I like stories with characters who have both good and evil in their character, and moral gray areas of plot, but this one is all evil and grim and none of the positive of humanity. Whenever you make Phillip K. Dick look cheery by comparison, something has gone bad wrong.

Ridley must really, really hate comic books.

1 out of 5 stars Schadenfreude Injustice: French Fries vs. Perfect Form.......2006-11-20

THIS BOOK IS JUNK TO THE GENRE. UTTERLY MORONIC. FULL OF POSTURING AND BOMBAST AND IDIOM. PREDICTABLE AND INANE CONCLUSION, PREDICTABLE AND INANE EPILOGUE. THE AUTHOR SHOULD BE DROPKICKED INTO IRREPARABLE INSANITY.
THE BOOK JUSTIFIABLY DESERVES A ZERO.

2 out of 5 stars The worst main character ever.......2006-05-21

The only reason I kept reading this book was the vain hope that this character would develop some kind of redeeming trait. It never happens, she's treats almost everyone, human or mutant, like crap. She'll watch a mutant save someones life then without hesitation pull out her gun and shoot them. She's filled with blatant, uncompromising hatred and not the least bit of reason or conscience about the people she's murdered. One of the mutants in the book puts it most accurately when he compares her to nazis and klan members.
Other than her the book was okay. The action sequences were intense and the other characters were well written.

A book fraught with danger, adventure, fun, and strategy, it makes a wonderful fairy-tale. It's a book that will be a favorite forever on your bookshelf! The way the sailing ships got goofed up with chess pieces made me laugh out loud! I recomend this book for everyone, especially for kids,(because I'm pretty young myself!) Happy reading!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, engaging, and creative Adventure.......2005-03-13

I would wholeheartedly recommend Len Bailey's new book, "Clabbernappers". It was an extremely creative adventure story about an eleven year old boy, Danny Ray, who at the county fair, gets a choice of a prize or walking through a door marked "Adventure". Being the adventurous type, he goes through the door and finds himself offering to find the missing queen for the King of Elidor in time for the Great Chess Game. The story takes place on a chessboard with the chess pieces as ships on the "Checkered Sea". It's the good guys against the bad guys- Danny Ray and his friends on the ship "Hog", fighting off the Sarksa pirates (which are big black ant-like creatures) in search of the queen. There are gargoyles, bats, ghosts and countless other creatures in this creative novel, whose hero, Danny Ray, is one really confident boy. He never lets himself think that he cannot accomplish what he has set out to do. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to read a fast-paced adventure set in a completely different place than they've read about before. It was well written; I could visualize the characters and places in the story. I enjoyed it very much and am going to have my kids (ages 8, 10, and 12) read it next!

Well-paced, colorful adventure with original characters galore, continual twists and surprises, and through it all a delight in language that sparkles!

The Sarksa pirates abduct the Winter Queen, putting King Krystal of Elidor into a tizzy. He needs to mount a rescue, but who would undertake a seemingly suicidal mission. Krystal knows his champion must be the most courageous soul in the universe and no one in Elidor comes close so the monarch turns to the Dream Machine to summon a special hero to save the Queen.

Conceptually the King's idea should have worked, but he has doubts when the Dream Machine brings him the best bull rider in the Oklahoma Junior Division rodeo cowboy Danny Ray who was lifted from a Cherokee County amusement park. The monarch is skeptical not because Danny is from earth; he has misgivings because the "champion" is eleven years old. However, Danny Ray upon grasping why they sent for him, plans to prove the royal dude wrong by rescuing the Queen. His crosses the Checkered Sea with the help of Sea Captain Quigglewigg and the Clabbernappers while pirates, an evil monarch, the malevolent Nightmare Queen, and a nasty ghost attempt to kill him.

Middle school students will agree with confident Danny Ray that "CLABBERNAPPERS is the best dang adventure ever" as the young rodeo champion seems to land in one precarious situation after another while befriending interesting allies. The story line never slows down whether Danny Ray persuades his callers that he is the man albeit preadolescent for the job until the final altercation after a series of confrontations with the bad dudes. Len Bailey provides a wonderful young adult fantasy that is not a coming of age tale, but instead a youthful intrepid defender performing what he thought would be an itty bitty task.

How one simple nutrient can prevent, treat, and help to reverse high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.

This important book brings to light an often overlooked but central factor in some of the most prevalent and serious disorders that affect Americans today: magnesium deficiency. Written by a medical doctor and researcher who is considered to be the world's leading expert on the actions and uses of this vital mineral, The Magnesium Factor explains how magnesium deficiencies develop, why they are so widespread, and how they translate into metabolic disruptions that ultimately threaten the health of virtually every bodily system. The author then details how to determine whether you have, or are at risk for, this problem-and what you can do about it.

Backed by the latest scientific research, yet written in a clear, accessible style, here is the authoritative source for information on a topic of critical interest for all health-conscious individuals.

5 out of 5 stars Frozen Shoulder Thaws with Magnesium.......2007-01-05

Ditto what George Eby and the other reviewers said. And now my experience with magnesium.

When I researched to find help for rapid heartbeat and the profuse sweating and weakness that accompanied it, I found magnesium. Still skeptical (having read all the warnings of overdose this, that, etc.), but willing to try anything, I found rapid relief in less than an hour. And continued to experience increased strength in my legs and body overall the remainder of the day and the days following.

Surprised, I noticed the next week that my frozen shoulder thawed. I'd been so busy feeling good versus being unable to do more than walk slowly around my home or just sit, that I hadn't even noticed until I reached for something that was over my head without giving it a thought...when reaching the back of my neck to wash my hair with my left arm (I'm right-handed) was all I had been able to manage for six months previously. That shoulder and arm now needed to be stretched and strengthened after being locked up for so long, but normal activities of the day took care of that in good time.

That was January 2002. I've continued to discover all the ways that magnesium works in the body. I can sleep through the night without getting up to use the bathroom. I don't frequent the bathroom during the day, even keeping my water intake high. I no longer leak when I sneeze or cough.

Magnesium keeps me free of edema, and will release excess water for a few hours after waking...notoriously if I travel somewhere. I used to be puffy and tight, and stiff especially in the feet. What some people like to label plantar facsiitis. No more.

I came to realize how unwell I had been for decades. I am feeling better now at age 51 than at age 30 and even childhood. Never as much energy as the other kids, or even my own siblings.

As you read this book you will learn that sugar and refined grain products leach magnesium out of the body. You can learn to live without those non-nutrient edibles. Then you won't be needing so much magnesium to just get even, you can keep it steady. And you'll discover what other symptoms those two non-foods create. See 'Sugar Blues' by William Dufty.

Read 'Three Minute Therapy' by Michael Edelstein to help you get real with what you put in your mouth...and anything else in your life that you unwittingly allow to give you grief.

Oh, I've even used warm magnesium sulfate baths (Epsom Salts) to revive abandoned barn kittens from coma after unexplained seizure.

Get your life back. Read The Magnesium Factor. And then get some Magnesium Taurate here at Amazon from the Vitamin Shoppe.

This is a great book. I have been taking a Magnesium based tablet for a few years.
I went from a Migraine a week to one every other month. My Doctor sent me to a health food store "Whole Foods" where I am able to get them. I still take highblood pressure meds but I feel better than I have in years. If you would like to know the name of the tablet it's MIGRALIEF by Quantum. I would still recommend seeing a neurologist and a good one makes all the difference in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Magnesium for life.......2006-06-13

This book is enlighting when you talk about the heart. It offers a really simple and cost effective way to maintain and manage certain aspects of your heart. You can basically add magnesium into your diet and what your body doesn't use will be elminated naturally into your urine.

I am going to go over the chapters that I considered informative to me.

          Fat, Cholesterol & Magnesium

There is a guide on how to correct your magnesium levels based on certain criterias. You will need to know your current HDL/LDL status before you can be assisted with the guide.

Magnesium, Stess, & the Type A

The explantory reason for how stress depletes the body of magnesium is an eye popper.

          Do you need more magnesium?

Provides testing locations with an appendix for the self testers. I considered the test list to be exhaustive with some of the symptoms similiar to other familiar diseases and conditions. Hence, it is probably better to see a doctor to have your mineral levels checked.

          Appendix A

Presents a questionaire that I think offers an insight on what your magnesium levels needs may be without going to a doctor.

Additionally, this book included a great simple BMI calculation to help you measure the fat content of your body.

          5 out of 5 stars A must read book.......2005-12-15

I learned a lot with this book. The only critics is that in my opinion the food classification in Appendix B should be given in terms of magnessium/calcium ratio rather than only magnessium (and better if further the potassium/sodium were given)

5 out of 5 stars The Magnesium Factor - Most important health book ever!!!!!.......2004-09-29

Drs. Seelig and Rosanoff have pinpointed THE LETHAL FLAW in American nutrition and medicine, that being chronic, culturally-induced magnesium deficiency. Magnesium deficiency/calcium excess causes 90% of all lethal heart attacks, and causes more illness than anyone can imagine. The reader MUST see pages 5 and 17 of their book. Page 5 shows that heart attack deaths in 1900 were essentially zero, but by 2,000 the incidence had climbed to about 700,000 per year due to a decline over the same time in magnesium dietary intake. Lethal heart attacks are caused by low magnesium. Page 17 shows that nations with low magnesium/high calcium diets (U.S. Finland, Netherlands) have a lethal heart attack rate 20 times higher than nations with high magnesium/low calcium diets (Japan). Drs. Seelig & Rosenoff show by review of many peer-reviewed medical journal articles that nearly all of the serious/lethal heart conditions such as arrhythmias, tachycardia, EKG & ECG abnormalities, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, angina, heart attacks (including sudden death heart attacks), high bad cholesterol, blood clots, mitral valve prolapes, type II diabetes, inability to handle "stress" are really nothing more than SYMPTOMS of severe magnesium deficiency. Many other "diseases" such as constipation, kidney stones, menstrual cramps, pre-eclampsia, ecalampsia, PMS, spontaneous abortion, miscarriage, carbohydrate intolerance, ravenous appetite, obesity, low serum calcium and potassium (not correctable with supplements), elevated serum phosphorus, vitamin D resistance, muscle cramps, musle soreness, backaches, neck pain, headaches, TMJ, muscle tension and twitches, convulsions, migrane headaches, hearing loss, ringing in ears, hyperactivity, stress disorders, ADHD in children, insomnia, numbness, tingling, agoraphobia, anxiety, depression, suicidal depression, irritability, panic attacks, all - each and every one - are SYMPTOMS of low magnesium. The diseases that are treatable, curable and preventable with magnesium supplementation represent the bulk of "diseases" currently treated with expensive pharmaceutical drugs and hospital treatments. If all Americans supplemented their diets with sufficient magnesium (estimates vary from 150 to 500 mg magnesium supplemental) per day, they believe would result a great reduction in the need for physican and hospital services nation-wide. The main source of magnesium in the American diet 100 years ago when there was much magnesium in our food was wheat, dark green leafy vegetables and nuts. Due to refining wheat, there is little magnesium remaining and people tend to avoid nuts due to their oil content. Most people do not eat enough vegetables. Conseqently, we have a serious culturally-induced magnesium deficiency that adversely affects all of our lives on a daily baises, and costs this country about 10% of its gross domestic product in un-necessary health costs.

Magnesium deficiency symptoms are widespread in radiata pine stands throughout New Zealand, though deficiency symptoms have been reported to be more severe during the last two decades particularly on pumice soils in the central North Island, leading to reductions in growth rate and wood density. Large differences in the severity of symptoms occur over small spatial scales, which arise partly because of genetic differences in nutritional traits between trees, however, suspected variations in site factors have eluded detection. Several new trials established in a second-rotation Pinus radiata stand at Puruki forest were measured to investigate the role of soil and genetic factors associated with small-scale spatial variation in Mg deficiency symptoms observed on the pumice soils there in the first-rotation. The trials included seedling and clonally propagated progeny from open pollinated parents. Ten progeny from each of 40 open pollinated families were propagated as fascicle cuttings. In addition to clones, seedlings from a Puruki Control seedlot developed from 26 open pollinated healthy seed-parent phenotypes, and a GF30 seedlot selected for improved growth rate and stem form were included. These genotypes were planted in six plot replicates each containing a single ramet of the 400 clones, and 10 plot replicates each containing a single ramet of 80 clones (a subset of the 400). The latter 10 plots also contained 10 ramets of a single clone, and 60 seedlings (30 each from Puruki Control and GF30). The 16 plots were deployed in areas with moderate to severe Mg deficiency symptoms. Additional seedlings and clones from 20 families were planted in family row plots to test for propagation effects. Magnesium deficiency symptoms in individual trees scored at stand ages 2 and 3 years showed strong plot, clone, family, and seedlot differences. Plot means ranged from 1.6 to 3.1, clone means ranged from 1.3 to 4.1, with a 1999-2000 age-age correlation for clone means of 0.69 (n=378), and family means ranged from 1.4 to 3.6, with a 1999-2000 age-age correlation of 0.92 (n=40). Broad sense heritability of Mg deficiency score (and S.E.) was 0.46 (0.03) and narrow sense heritability 0.69 (0.17), based on clone scores averaged over both years. These results suggest the need to avoid seedlots based on a small number of parent trees, unless clones or families of known resistance to Mg deficiency are used. Significant plot differences in solution Ca, Cu, K, Mg, S, exchangeable Na and Al were found at the 0-0.1m depth, and solution K, total C, N, and exchangeable K at 0.5-1.0m depth. Mg deficiency symptoms were positively correlated with exchangeable K (r=0.83) and solution K (r=0.70) at 0.5-1.0m depth, and negatively correlated with exchangeable Mg concentration (r=0.51) at 0-0.1m depth. Spatial variation in subsoil K primarily determined plot differences in Mg deficiency symptoms at this site. Exchangeable K concentration was positively correlated with the thickness of the lapilli layer at 0.5-1m depth, which may explain the widespread occurrence of Mg deficiency symptoms on volcanic soil when the surface horizon is dry.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A697104. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: An investigation of vortex shedding downstream of a cascade of second-generation, controlled-diffusion, compressor stator blades, at off-design inlet-flow angles of 31, 33 and 35 degrees and Reynolds numbers, based on chord length, of 280,000, 380,000 and 640,000 is reported. The objective of the study was to characterize the flow and shedding through various complementary methods. Blade surface pressure measurements were taken from a fully instrumented blade, and distributions of pressure coefficients were determined. Five-hole probe wake surveys were performed at midspan, and the total pressure loss coefficients and axial velocity ratios were calculated. Upstream inlet-flow angle was set, and further characterized through two-component laser- Doppler velocimetry (LDV). Hot-wire anemometry measurements were performed at midspan, in the wake, and the reduced data were compared with two-component LDV surveys of the same regions. Plots of hot-wire vs. LDV turbulence data are reported in addition to power spectra documenting the shedding events. Vortex shedding was determined to be a leading edge phenomenon as periodic shedding was only detected on the pressure side of the wake. The frequency and magnitude of shedding were found to be independent of incidence angle, and to increase with Reynolds number at constant incidence angle. The Strouhal number, based on leading edge diameter, was found to be in the range of 0.23-0.26, which is comparable to that of vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder in the Reynolds number range tested.

What a wonderful and authentic book!! I loved reading it from cover to cover.....there are sooooo many recipes that I've tagged to try soon. In fact while I was browsing the book, my husband happened to look at the fish taco picture in there and immediately started craving some. So went to a mexican farmer's market and brought our ingredients home and started cooking from the recipe in the book...and let me tell you, this was the BEST fish taco we've ever had!

UPDATE: I made guacamole and pico de gallo(mexican salsa as called by the book) and they both turned out AWESOME! I also made enchiladas verde...and they were nice...especially the tomatilla salsa that's used in the recipe...yummm.
                            Next up: Agua Fresca!

                            5 out of 5 stars Simply Exquisite.......2003-08-16

Once again Marilyn Tausend does not disappoint! I own the Spanish edition of this book and have given the English edition to friends visiting Mexico and wanted a "real authentic Mexican cuisine" cookbook. She does a great job on explaining the traditions and festivities that go hand-in-hand with a lot of foods in Mexico. The Christmas punch is a family favorite served annually at our Posadas and Christmas meals. (Recipe tip: remove the seeds from the Guavaba fruit before adding to the punch.)

Even if you don't relish roasting and peeling a Poblano Chili, just reading the recipes and looking at the tantalizing photographs will make your taste buds tingle. This book is so beautiful, it would even look lovely on your coffee table. Mrs. Tausend's work, replete with interesting historical explanations, is a true portrayal of Mexico's rich cuisine and culture. If this book is not enough for you, then I recommend that you accompany Mrs. Tausend on one of her wonderful culinary trips to various parts of Mexico for a "hands on" experience of Mexico and its unparalled cuisine.

Favorite cooking tip: many of the Mexican chili salsas can be made in large batches and then frozen in smaller portions for use at a later time.

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn Tausend Rocks!.......2003-04-30

This book is a wonderful followup to her collaborative work "Mexico The Beautiful". I was afraid that many of the wonderfully authentic recipes from her other books might be duplicated here, but that's not the case. As usual, she's managed to come up with very authentic recipes (I have lived in Mexico for many years now and have studied the cuisines) that I had been hoping to find, such as Quail in Rose Petal Sauce of "Like Water For Chocolate" fame, Cream of Chile Poblano, and Torta Azteca, among others. The instructions are easy to understand, the photography is brilliant, the ingredients are relatively easy to find and Ms. Tausend again did her research right because these recipes taste like the real thing! This is not another taco/enchilada/burrito cookbook, there are many truly fascinating and hard-to-find dishes in this book. I'm so glad I bought it! If you're looking for another great Mexican cooking aid, this is the one to get after Mexico the Beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mexican cooking book!!!!.......2002-12-28

I was looking for a good authentic mexican book (my husband is mexican) and this one captured my attention. My husband reviewed it and he aggreed that the recipes are authentic from a lot of regions in Mexico. Each recipes has its own picture and very well presented.

I recommend it to all people who wants to cook mexican cuisine. The recipes are relatively easy to make and it's easy to find the ingredients.

                            A fabulous book!

                            4 out of 5 stars Delicioso!.......2002-02-21

Every cookbook should be loaded with pictures like this one is. This book has a great sampling of dishes from all over Mexico, and helpful substitutions for hard to find ingredients. Not only are the recipes great, but the history behind the dishes are interesting also. I found most of the recipes require a lot of preparation time, however that is due more to the nature of Mexican cooking. I haven't found a bad recipe yet in the whole book.
