In 1927, Walter Evans-Wentz published his translation of an obscure Tibetan Nyingma text and called it the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Popular Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche has transformed that ancient text, conveying a perennial philosophy that is at once religious, scientific, and practical. Through extraordinary anecdotes and stories from religious traditions East and West, Rinpoche introduces the reader to the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, moving gradually to the topics of death and dying. Death turns out to be less of a crisis and more of an opportunity. Concepts such as reincarnation, karma, and bardo and practices such as meditation, tonglen, and phowa teach us how to face death constructively. As a result, life becomes much richer. Like Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Sogyal Rinpoche opens the door to a full experience of death. It is up to the reader to walk through. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

In this major and comprehensive work, Buddhist meditation master and international speaker Sogyal Rinpoche brings together the ancient wisdom of Tibet with modern research on death and dying and the nature of the universe. With unprecedented scope, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying clarifies the majestic vision of life and death that underlies The Tibetan Book of the Dead. Sogyal Rinpoche presents simple yet powerful practices from the heart of the Tibetan tradition that anyone, whatever their religion or background, can do to transform their lives, prepare for death, and help the dying.

Rinpoche shows the hope there is in death: how we can go beyond denial and fear to discover what it is in us that survives death and is changeless. He presents a lucid, inspiring, and complete introduction to the practice of meditation, to karma and rebirth, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path. He gives advice on how to care for the dying with love and compassion and offer them spiritual assistance.

Rinpoche presents his own vision of the near-death experience from the Tibetan perspective. He explains in detail the "bardos," those states of consciousness after death that have fascinated and tantalized Western artists, psychologists, scientists, doctors, and philosophers ever since the publication of The Tibetan Book of the Dead in 1927.

The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is not only a spiritual masterpiece but also a manual, a guide, a work of reference, and a source of sacred inspiration. It has been written to inspire all who read it to begin the journey to enlightenment and so become "servants of peace," working in the world with joy, wisdom, and compassion to take part in safeguarding the future of humanity.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book........2007-10-04

"Just as if you put your finger into water, it will get wet, and if you put it into fire, it will burn, so if you invest your mind in the wisdom mind of the Buddha, it will transform into their wisdom nature."

Considered by many to be the most astute interpretation for Western culture of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and the Tibetan Book of the Living, this contemporary classic by Sogyal Rinpoche blends ancient ideas of Tibetan Buddhism with a fresh perspective from a master who has spent a good deal of time teaching and lecturing in the West.

It is most moving to read his prologue especially, in which he deals with the death of his master, for which he was present. The great spiritual process of learning to die, before dying, as the secret to life, is explored in this section. Much of what is now being reflected upon in the new spirituality of Echart Tolle and others is covered here with clarity and a certain depth not found in other western spiritual classics.

On a personal note, I revisited this book after dealing with a lost love and found it to be the pure water of the dharma that I needed in order to overcome the horrors of such a loss. I would encourage anyone to read this amazing book, but especially those who are in a place of pain, hopelessness, or suffering in this very moment. Strike while the iron is hot! The terrible, clear light of grief is in fact a step into profound self-awareness. It was an honor to read Rinpoche and to be touched by his sincerity and clear mastery of the practice.

5 out of 5 stars First most lifechanging book I've ever read.......2007-10-02

I reviewed the second most life changing book I've ever read, so I figured I should come back and review the first most life changing book I've ever read, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. After my husband died, I wanted to know what happened after you died. He was my one and only true love. When I read this book, I realized that Sogyal Rinpoche had some knowledge of what he was talking about, and this book had all the answers to the mystery of life and death for those with the wisdom to recognize it, and the determination to study and practice it. I read the book 3 times in a row right away right after I bought it.

A few years later after reading the book I joined Rigpa and took the classes they offered. After few years of practice, the cube farm way of life no longer made sense to me. So, much to the chagrin of all my relatives, I ditched my 6 figure Silicon Valley job to go work on a horse ranch by the beach!

Maybe the book should come with a warning label. Warning, this book could be hazardous to your income! Don't feel bad for me tho because I have a sweet IRA which I invest myself so I'm all set for retirement. You can feel jealous instead :-)

Actually, after some years of Buddhist practice, my clarity of mind has improved so I think if I ever had to go back to my old work, I would get all those enterprise-wide IT projects done better, faster, and everyone would have a lot more fun along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Understandable at Last.......2007-08-23

This book makes a complex Buddhist belief understandable for most. The author illustrates principals with examples from his own life. Interspersed with poetry and songs, it is an insightful study on a most important subject.

4 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2007-05-21

A well written book by an author who understands the Tibetan teachings of impermanence. This book is an easy read for the novice student of Budhism, but I wouldn't recommend picking it up as a complete beginner. The book is best suited for early students who are at the least familiar with Tibetan teachings and philosophies.

It is an excellent companion to the Tibetan Book of the dead as it will help clear up some of the things explained in that text in an easy to read and understand fashion. The author makes good use of personal stories, and conventional teachings, and helps to simplify a very demanding aspect of Buddhist study.

5 out of 5 stars the tibetan book of living and dying.......2007-05-14

I find it hard to fully express how important this book is.
The subject may seem morbid but the contra is true, like the bardol thodol it stands alone in spiritual writings.

5 out of 5 stars Death of a Tart.......2007-06-20

Fun little murder mystery! The town of Cobbs Landing is a typical New England village with a history and a bunch of local characters from the chief of Police to the Peggy the town's mayor and hardware store owner. Peggy and Lovey (Peggy's neighbor and dearest friend) are amature sleuths and they love to find "trouble", from a Pumkin float, and the high schools missing skeleton. A great halloween read!

5 out of 5 stars Cute and Fun Cozy Mystery.......2007-03-03

The atmosphere is cozy. Peggy Jean is the main character. She is the town's mayor. She lives with her ten-year-old son, Nicky. She is a good mother and spends as much time as she can with her son. I admire their relationship.

They live next door to their best friends, Lavinia and Chuck, and son Charlie. The two families have a good relationship with each other; Peggy Jean and Lavinia are best friends; Nicky and Charlie are best friends.

They live in a New England town that needs to be revived. Max shows up to reform it into a colonial, historical town and everybody has to wear costumes.

The mystery/plot was very clever, fun, and interesting.

"Death of a Tart" is the first book of the series. Next books are "Death of a Trickster" and "Death of a Turkey". This series is absolutley the coziest, and the most superb, series I have ever read in my life. Each book keeps getting better and cozier, even though you don't think a book can get any better. Kate Borden is the most wonderful, most awesome, and most magnificent author I have ever encountered.

4 out of 5 stars Light, Homey Début.......2006-07-15

In the 1st book in the Peggy Jean Turner Mystery series, we meet the mayor of Cobb's Landing, New England, Peggy Jean Turner. Being the mayor of a small town might seem like a big thing, but in a town that is losing revenue and a good tax base, it is a highly unglamorous position. Peggy Jean (P.J.) has recently lost her husband, and while still reeling from his death, she continues to run their hardware store and raise their son. She finds it difficult to keep everyone happy, however, when the teachers threaten to strike if they are not given a raise, and the police complain about the lack of running vehicles. P.J. knows she cannot raise taxes in her already struggling town, and desperately looks for a way to increase revenue. And then, newcomer, Max, shows up in town and buys the bank. He speaks to P.J. about changing the town into a tourist attraction, and capitalize on the old style and old fashioned ways of the New England town. Things are looking up for Peggy Jean and Cobb's Landing, until one of the town's most despised citizens is found dead on the town's landmark...a beautiful old waterwheel. It was quickly discovered that P.J. was going to meet with the victim that evening, and all eyes turn to their bewildered mayor. P.J. must move fast to find the killer, before she is thrown into jail before she gets to see the revival of her beloved hometown.

This is a fun, light cozy series and I really enjoy the characters, the mysteries, and the setting. The only thing that I didn't care for was the nicknames (P.J. for a mayor's name seemed too casual), and the name "Lovey" for her best friend was a bit silly for me. Otherwise, I loved the storyline, and was intrigued by the character of Max who seems like he is hiding something. If you like small town cozies, give this series a try.

The next book in the series is called "Death of a Trickster". Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Cute new series.......2006-04-22

I really was unsure of this book when I picked it up, but it was definitely worth the read. Its got great characters and a fun, fast-paced plot. And Ian is a simplpy a dream-boat - sure hope he and Peggy continue on in the next book!

I will agree with one of the other reviewers that I thought the whole "Colonial village" thing went off too smoothly. I was also expecting it to crash on their heads - I was glad it didn't, but still. I actually can see why the town would go along though...Max is a smooth talker and added to that the town desperately needed something...people will believe anything if they want it to be true badly enough. And the Missy character...what was her point exactly? Will she be back to cause more trouble? She just kind of disappeared mid-story.

Anyway, I recommend this book and look forward to more that I hope can live up and then surpass this one. But a good solid first mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Real cute easy read.......2006-02-02

This is a cute and easy read. Has some gret characters in the series and they are fun to read about. Look forward to other instalments in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Some excellent stuff in here.......2004-12-31

Of all of the D&D-related material not made directly by Wizards that I've found, this is definitely my favorite. The suggestions for classes are all quite true to genre conventions, and there are some excellent suggestions in here for adopting an Arthurian flavor into your campaign. The Knight core class is a lot of fun, as are the new prestige classes. My favorite is by far the Green Knight--it's definitely an NPC-oriented class if you're going strictly by canon, but it gave me a little bit of a rush to see the classic Gawain tale made manifest in a full stat block (They even get vorpal immunity!).

If I have one complaint, it's that this is one of the most poorly copyedited pieces of D&D material I have seen yet. Typos abound, even in section headings! I understand that this is a minor detail, but it shows a certain amount of carelessness in a book that is otherwise so full of great new material. I don't think this will be a make-or-break point for any buyer, but it did detract from my enjoyment of the book.

All in all, I've had a lot of fun implementing the Arthurian elements into my campaign world. This book will make a great start for all of you young squires ready to become knights, to woo fair maidens, and to battle evil the world over!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-08-19

This is a great guide to roleplaying in an Arthurian setting. It provides roles for nonhuman PCs to fill in the campaign (depending on whether or not you want them to be near-human or otherworldly) and a niche for almost all the classes. They even managed to give monks a tiny bit of breathing room. Also, the Honor system is definitely worth taking a look at, as it is extremely well-crafted and realistic (of course, there are far more ways to lose Honor than to gain it). Finally, there's the magic. The book strongly advises that you don't use the "big bang" spells unless it's a dire situation or unless the foe is a dishonorable cur, since these are considered dishonorable uses of power, and in fact the book makes these spells harder to cast (more time, expensive material components). The book also draws a sharp line between wizards and sorcerers (sorcerers are more spontaneous and suited for adventuring, but wizards craft longer-lasting magics and are more prized as councilors for kings). All in all, my hat goes off to Sword & Sorcery on this one. Well done!

Long-term meditators experience 80 percent less heart disease and 50 percent less cancer than nonmediators, according to a large body of studies. Meditation has been shown to improve sleep and reduce chronic pain. Not all meditation is equally effective, however. Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., has developed a form of advanced meditation he calls "Medical Meditation," which "more fully addresses every element of our physical and ethereal makeup... a full-service approach." Medical Meditation is an adaptation of kundalini yoga combined with meditation, using specific breathing patterns, posture and movements, mantras, and mental focus.

Different Medical Meditation focus on different physiological benefits for specific conditions, so once you've learned the basics, you can choose a specific Medical Meditation for high blood pressure, to improve digestion, or to strengthen the immune system or the heart, for example. Line drawings illustrate the postures, and Khalsa's stories about his patients are inspiring and involving.

Meditation as Medicine is not a brisk read or a "read-today-do-tomorrow" guide, however. Be prepared to immerse your mind in a study of chakras, mantras, breathing exercises, movement exercises, poses, and meditations--and discipline yourself to practice Khalsa's techniques patiently. Are the benefits worth all the work involved? Khalsa thinks so: "For the ill and injured, Medical Meditation is not a problem. It's a solution."

Khalsa is both a physician and a yogi. He is board certified in anesthesiology, pain management, and antiaging medicine, and president and medical director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Foundation. Cowriter Cameron Stauth, author of 12 books, was named Journalist of the Year by the National Health Foundation. --Joan Price

    Book Description

Proven effective by scientific research and presented here by Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa and Cameron Stauth, the practice of Medical Meditation revolutionizes the healing process. By balancing and regenerating the body's ethereal and physical energies through simple meditations, Medical Meditation unites the mind, body, and spirit into a powerful triad.

Each Medical Meditation here has a specific physiological effect, targeting afflictions from arthritis to ulcers to cancer. Dr. Khalsa details the five unique attributes that endow this type of meditation with far more power than standard meditation. The combination of special postures and movements; exact positioning of the hands and fingers; particular mantras; specific breathing patterns; and a unique focus of concentration can change your entire biochemical profile, easing you into a calm, healing state. Practiced in conjunction with conventional or alternative medical treatments, cutting-edge Medical Meditation activates the healing force within you.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beware the lack of science...........2007-04-10

I noticed a review that noted the lack of references to specific scientific studies in this text. Its definitely good to remind folks to be careful of any information someone is presenting, especially since so many of us are desperately seeking more effective approaches with regard to health. I would venture to say the "science" of today is a significant part of the reason the wealthiest nation on the face of the earth is ranked 36th in wellness in the world. With those numbers it certainly begs the question as to what science we would want to compare the info in the book. Much of the US today is still operating off 17th century science, rather than more recent advances in quantum physics, etc..

There is a reason meditation in its many forms has been around for so long - it works. Its also free, and readily available to anyone. 2500 years of study by millions of people has proven that.

    Good reading.

5 out of 5 stars Effective healing program for deep injuries .......2007-02-18

Reading this book straight through, the book is interesting. But when one begins to practice the recommended meditations regularly, one begins to feel the benefits first hand. This is ancient yoga methods for a contemporary audience, with some info on scientific studies that support the theories of yoga. Keep in mind, this book is not merely meditation, but also includes stretches, prayers, and various yoga poses and breathing exercises. About half of the book is narrating "miracle" healing stories that the author has been a part of. This portion of the book is to build the faith of the readerm because to heal one must believe in the power of the body to heal itself. This book goes well with the author's other book, Food as Medicine. It is also realistic. Meditation can help healing, but only put out as much as the practitioner puts in.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the effort.......2006-08-11

I first read this book about five years ago and found it a bit overwhelming - this time around I read it with a sense of anticipatory excitement. I didn't know whether to read it all the way through, first, and then try some of the techniques, or try them as I went.
There are some great reviews written about this book already. All I would like to add is this: I have made the effort to learn several of the techniques, and THEY WORK!
I personally do not have an illness, aside from rather intense mood swings that leave me with feelings of panic and anxiety. The exercises for the fourth chakra (heart) have brought a much greater calm to my life. I would warn people to avoid doing some of the exercises designed to increase energy at night. I made this mistake and was unable to get to sleep! It is best, like the author says, to do them as soon after you awaken as possible. I would also like to note that these exercises do require EFFORT! After some of them, I feel like I have done a hard physical work-out. If you have a yoga or meditation background already, you will be somewhat prepared. You will also have to take some time to really master these exercises. On the plus side, many of them take only 3-11 minutes to perform, so you have much gain for a little pain!!! What I chose to do was learn the ones that looked the easiest first. Experiencing the clear head, peaceful calm, yet alert energy has given me the encouragement to keep trying the other techniques. Some of the techniques I found made be positively euphoric. There is a reason why Yogis always have a smile on their faces! I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to put effort into their own well-being, who likes the idea of "natural high" as opposed to drug-induced mood-altering. Peace, alertness, energy and no ugly side-effects.
I've no doubt that those who use these techniques for serious medical problems will experience at least some relief if not eventual cure. I've no doubt that if I continue to practice these techniques I might prevent some future illness in my own self.

5 out of 5 stars Meditation as Medicine, a Prescription we can all Afford.......2004-08-24

If you are searching for inner peace, in the process of healing yourself, or healing others, Meditation as Medicine is an essential reference. Dr. Khalsa gives practical, step-by-step instructions on how to understand and heal your physical and ethereal bodies by combining techniques from yoga, meditation, and chanting. He presents numerous scientific studies plus his own experiences and those of his patients. He explains how the chakras, nadis, endocrine systems, and brain interconnect the body, mind and spirit.

Dr. Khalsa reveals many gems as he explains how our physical, mental, and spiritual bodies are miraculously intertwined. "Breath is the kiss of God," he writes, "With the proper breath, posture, movement, and mental focus, we can heal ourselves." He proposes that "The chanting of mantras endows us with a single-mindedness that is needed for a life of passion, commitment, and peace and heightens the proper replication of DNA."

Even if you only follow a few of his recommendations, you will be convinced that his approach is valid.

The techniques synchronize with each other to reinforce the magnificence of our creation. "The sixth chakra is the path of the soul," Khalsa reflects. If you are ready to explore the path of your soul, then try some of the exercises. Experiment with the mantras and notice how sound affects your energy. Take time to meditate and discover a renewed sense of vitality. Incorporate these techniques into your morning or evening routines and witness the miracle of the healing within.

2 out of 5 stars Meditation yes, but not medical science.......2004-02-27

This is an excellent book about Kundalini Yoga techniques and the chakra system. There are many great exercises. But there are no endnotes, footnotes or references to any scientific studies. The author has a medical degree but none of the techniques in here have been tested in scientific studies. That doesn't mean that they don't work medically. But the title of the book and the "M.D.," after the author's name implies that there is something scientific going on here. There is not.

5 out of 5 stars Who needs pictures? It's the taste that counts!.......2005-12-13

I bought this cookbook several years ago. While other cookbooks while away in the cupboard, "Pasta Fresca" lives on my kitchen counter.
The recipes are good and mostly easy. The only challenge is finding some of the ingredients. (Luckily most of the recipes do not require hard-to-find ingredients.) But the search for black olive paste is well worth it: "Fusilli lunghi all' Amalfitana" sends us to Seventh Heaven regularly. Why, it's almost as good as a trip to the fairy tale land of Amalfi!

      3 out of 5 stars no pictures.......2005-08-21

Looks like a nice book,I did not use yet but I noticed that it has no pictures, which makes it hard to know what to expect the dish to suppose to look like. I feel that would probably make my job trying to impress my wife a little harder.

5 out of 5 stars After ten years, my favorite cookbook.......2002-11-15

I found "Pasta Fresca" when it first came out in the early '90s and have loved it ever since. The recipes are easy, simple, and fresh. Summer Spaghetti: Fresh tomatoes and basil, marinated at room temperature with garlic and olive oil, tossed with mozzarella and hot pasta. "Beach Pasta": Small pasta shells, tuna, tomatoes, olives, and anchovies. Both have become staples for me, and every new recipe I try from the book turns out well. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It also makes a great wedding present for couples just starting out.

5 out of 5 stars great one and and a pleasure to cook by. who ever borrows it.......1998-11-28

always forget that they have it. Your gnocchi is a great recipe, based on your concern of introducing too much water itno the boiling potato's i have been baking them, and every person who has tasted them can't stop tasting. iv'e shown them your book and they love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Italian Pasta Recipes.......1998-05-21

I bought this book on a lark and now use it often with great results. The last time that I made dinner from it my guest was overwhelmed by the great aromas wafting from the kitchen. She loved the meal as well. The recipes are easy to understand and include unusual ideas that I have never seen before.
