Book Description
The "Last Will and Testament of Jesus Christ": Forged or Found?
November, A.D. 439, at Ravenna, Italy, capital of the Western Roman Empire. Surgeon Getorius Asterius and his wife Arcadia are called to examine the body of Behan, a monk seemingly drowned in a penitential rite gone awry. The couple discovers a prophecy text in Behan's hut, suggesting that a document of earth-shaking importance will soon be revealed. Shortly after, during an impromptu visit to the new mausoleum of Galla Placidia, mother of Emperor Valentinian III, a hidden niche violently reveals the "Last Will and Testament of Jesus Christ," purportedly dictated to Pontius Pilate's secretary while the procurator is outside addressing the crowd. The stunning terms of the will are an expression of Christ's supreme love and forgiveness, yet if implemented by the Bishop of Rome, His vicar, they now will bring apocalyptic chaos to the twin Roman Empires. Placidia supresses the papyrus while palace librarian Theokritos tests its authenticity.
After three witnesses are murdered, Getorius suggests to Placidia that Rabbi David ben Zadok, of the Judean community, evaluates the text and predict consequences if the document is made public. His response: empire-wide civil war, with Christians and Judeans pitted against each other.
In the interval of waiting for Theokritos's report, Getorius is arrested, falsely accused of dissecting the body of the monk, leaving Arcadia alone to deal with the papyrus.
Late in December, delayed by winter storms, Brenos, abbot of Behan's monastery, arrives from Gaul, ostensibly to bury his monk, but actually to reveal the will at the Nativity Vigil Mass. Frantic at finding that the papyrus has been prematurely discovered, Brenos meets with "Smyrna," his mysterious contact at Ravenna, in an effort to locate the will.
In the last late hours of December 24, it is still not certain that fanatical members of a religious order will not succeed in establishing a theocracy designed to supplant the dying Western Empire.
Customer Reviews:
Very Disappointed.......2007-03-05
I found the characters to be drab and lifeless-- like actors not terribly interested in the parts they were playing, just reciting their lines.
The plot line was improbable and disjointed. The book just never developed any color or pulled together.
If it had been a library book, I would have returned it after page 60.
Spellbinding historical fiction.......2005-08-11
Mr. Noyer has written a terrific and intriquing novel. If you ever fantasized of what life was like in mid-5th Century Southern Europe, then this book is a must read. The adventures of a surgeon and his medicine-studying wife, plus all the other interesting characters of the town of Ravenna, in Italy, make up a tightly woven tale of murder, deceit, greed and power. There is always the suspense of what's coming next and the surprises that follow, which kept me reading without wanting to put down the book. A real page turner.
Wonderful details describe (with clarity) the day-to-day existence of people during this era, shortly before the demise of the Roman Empire. The food and drink consumed, the importance people placed on their cultural and religious beliefs, and how the surgeon and his wife treated diseases with herbs, potions and by other more drastic means.
The drawings, in the front of the book, and the identification of its characters by name and title, and the characters recalling periodically of what has happened, gives the reader a feeling of not having missed anything. This book is an enjoyable piece of literature.
Rather unimpressive.......2005-08-06
Sorry to break with the other reviewers, but I was somewhat underwhelmed with the book. There is a balance that every fiction writer must strike between character development and pace. Noyer does not succeed well at either. His main characters, Getorius and Arcadia, are not developed fully enough to cause the reader to identify positively with either; both of them (Getorius especially) seem rather weak. Yet he also throws in numerous extraneous details and characters (some of whom are introduced and then quickly killed off) and various items that add nothing to the story and cause it to drag unnecessarily. Too much of the mystery is simply left unexplained, and too many characters get bumped off with little or no explanation of who or how. To top it off, the (presumed) murderer is not apprehended in the end, and, as was stated by another reviewer, the conclusion is very flat and unsatisfying. Some of the historical details are interesting, but he makes an embarrassing (and completely unnecessary) flub in having a character (who presumably speaks in Latin) make a pun about "son" and "sun" - the words are not even remotely similar in Latin (filius and sol). I'd recommend that Mr. Noyer spend some time learning how to write more realistic dialogue, develop his characters (especially the main characters) more thoroughly, and generally work on his style a bit before releasing his next work.
Entertaining and Educational.......2003-12-28
This is a historical novel playing in the mid-fifth century at Ravenna, the West Roman capital at the time. It was an era of extraordinary upheaval. The Vandals had conquered most of the Roman possessions in North Africa. In 439 AD they conquered Carthage, and in 455 AD they sacked Rome. If this were not enough, the Christian faith, which had been declared state religion roughly a century earlier was still far from being the established religion of Europe.
The novel begins showing Emperor Valentian III hunting with two Hunnic bodyguards at the outskirts of Ravenna. He was pursuing a boar he had just wounded, but the animal had escaped across a stream. The loss gave the emperor pause for a monologue about the three persons who were making his life difficult, his mother, his wife, and the commander of the West Roman army, all of whom the reader will meet as the story unfolds. While the emperor was still indulging in self-pity, his horse suddenly shied. In the icy waters of the stream bobbed the naked body of a man, striking a grotesque pose with his arms stretched out as if he were crucified. Valentian recognized the man from his tonsured head. "It's that Hibernian monk who comes to the palace library", he cried. With that begins a novel that is as suspenseful as any who-done-it and yet as fascinating as history can be.
There is a host of characters, but if anybody knows how to breathe life into them, it's the novelist. There are Getorius, a physician, and his beautiful wife Arcadia who have been charged with the investigation of the monk's death. The Empress Mother of Valentian invites them and several others to have a look at her newly finished mausoleum. While strolling through the cruciform building, one of them discovers a mysterious papyrus hidden in a wall-niche. As he tries to pull it out, he is struck and mortally wounded by the bolt from a small crossbow concealed in the niche.
Such are the circumstances surrounding the discovery of an ancient papyrus containing a message that could have disastrous consequences for the whole Roman Empire. Is the papyrus a forgery or is it authentic? Who put it there? Is this a conspiracy? Why did they guard it with the murderous crossbow? What are their intentions?
Now the plot thickens. One by one the persons who witnessed the discovery of the papyrus are dying under suspicious circumstances. Getorius and Arcadia wonder when it will be their turn. There are other ominous signs such as a cockerel that appears repeatedly at unexpected places, heightening the suspense.
But this is not an ordinary who-done-it. This is a skillfully designed novel narrated against a masterfully crafted historical background. There is the cast of colorful characters which in itself is no small accomplishment. Then there are the suspects, the intrigues, the false hopes, and the tracks that lead nowhere. It is an intricate web of actors and actions that can be confusing at times, but it is masterfully woven. The solution? You will be surprised.
Read it! When you have finished, you will have learned a lot, not only about history, but also about religion, medicine, food, customs, culture, and politics. Most important you will get a feel for the time.

Enjoyed second novel by Noyer.......2003-12-23
I found The Secundus Papyrus to be an intriguing journey back in time. With fine storytelling, convincing characters, and a page-turning plot, Noyer's second literary effort was well worth the wait. I look forward to more from this exceptional new author in the near future.

Customer Reviews:
Great ending to a fascinating series.......2006-07-15
With all the emotional investment you have in the characters from the first two books, Beldan's Fire is a great way to end the series and doesn't disappoint. I also have to add, finally, there were less typos in the third book.
With the clock ticking on the world of Oran, the New Moon springs into action for its final defensive against the Sileans and Queen Zorah. Beldan's Fire follows the stories of the three elemental queens, introducing the final fourth one, and brings the entire series to a very satisfying conclusion.
Although it's a fantasy series, it's still realistic. While the characters are running around trying to save their world, they still have to deal with emotional, coming-of-age issues, especially Jobber, who suddenly discovers that along with acknowledging she's a girl, she has to acknowledge the feelings and emotions that go along with it. And while we have no doubt that in the end, the "good guys" will win, important characters still die as a result of the overall war.
The only issue I had with the book was the unexplained change of plans for the Upright Man. (Spoiler ahead) In book one, he is searching for the new fire queen, as he needs her element to complete his personal elemental quarter knot. That totally makes sense. But somewhere between book one and book three, he abandons that plan and decides he just needs a new elemental queen, and it really doesn't seem to matter which one. It seems he arbitrarily picks the water queen as a target, and the author never really explains why he abandons the fire plan for the "any element will do" one. That one inconsistency bothered me during my reading, as I was looking for the reason behind his behavior and couldn't find it.
Other than that, a solid read. I am looking forward to trying other books by this author.
Great Book.......2005-07-18
After i read Beldhn's fire i was said the the trilogy was over. I would recommened this seris to anyone :D
Unconvincing and Tedious.......2001-05-18
This is the last novel in a trilogy that includes New Moon, Sadar's Keep, and Beldan's Fire. To understand it, it is necessary to read the whole series.
I have read and liked other books of Midori Snyder's (my favorite being The Inamorati). This series is unfortunately inferior. The historical background reads as if it was researched by attending a Renaissance and/or a Dickens Faire (street scenes and petty criminals in the main city of Beldan), watching a Middle Eastern dance troupe (the Ghazali), and reading a book about the problems with English (Silean) rule in Ireland (Oran). Grafted onto this is a New-Agey idea of the country of Oran (not the planet, just this country) being maintained by four queens with supernatural powers drawing on the four elements (earth, air, fire, water). Mixed in is some modern pop psychology about intergenerational conflicts, the fear of death, anorexia, and other current concerns.
Although represented as intelligent and resourceful, the characters don't act with ordinary common sense. Perpetually pursued and attacked, hungry and cold, whenever they come to a recently deserted village (which is often), they almost never bother to look for weapons, food, clothes, or other much-needed items. There are many other illogical actions. For example, the Ghazali substitute the words of their native tongue for the most common words of the Oran language (such as "yes") rather than more obscure or untranslatable ones.
This series is an unconvincing and tedious read.
Unique.......2000-08-26
I bought this book a long time ago, but never read it because I found out that it was the last book of a trilogy. It took me many years to locate the first two books in used bookstores, but I finally did, and just finished the trilogy last night. What a shame that they're so hard to find - this is one of the most original fantasies I've read.
The concept of the trilogy is that the world of Oran is held together and protected from Chaos by a "Queen's Quarter Knot", composed of four women, each with the power of one of the four elements. 200 years ago, the Fire Queen Zorah revolted, killed her three sisters, and is now ruling the country herself, using the magic of her element to keep herself young. But she can't do everything herself, so she has brought in a Regent and many of his followers from the neighboring country of Silea, and the native Orans are suffering under the arrogant rule of the Sileans. The New Moon is the name that the Oran rebels have given themselves, and their struggle both against Zorah and the Sileans is one focus of the story; the other is the formation of a new Queen's Quarter Knot as the four elements find each other and realize that Zorah is beginning to lose control and let Chaos claim the land.
The tough street slang of Jobber and the other city-bred characters makes the dialogue more interesting and fun to read. Snyder's Beldan is a well-detailed city with both a seamy underworld and corrupt nobility. The Oran countryside is no less well described. I wish that these three books (the first two are New Moon and Sadar's Keep) were not out of print, because I'd recommend them to any fantasy reader. They're worth searching used bookstores for.
Excellent.......2000-01-16
This is the final book of my all-time favourite trilogy. All the characters are engaging, or at least interestingly nasty. Some familiar elements of fantasy plots (street urchins, elemental magic etc) are given real depth by Snyder's lyrical style and a willingness not to pull her punches. The characters face a real struggle for survival and there are no easy solutions on offer. It is criminal that the other two books in this trilogy are out of print, because you really should be able to begin at the beginning. I can't recommend this trilogy enough.

"Depression fallout" is the emotional upheaval suffered by the friends and family members of someone who's depressed. Because at any given time, 17 million Americans are suffering from depression, there's a huge number of people suffering from this, says author Anne Sheffield, the daughter of a depressive. She compassionately recalls situations discussed in her support group at New York City's esteemed Beth Israel Hospital to illustrate how "co-sufferers" can successfully cope with their grief, confusion, guilt, and reduced self-esteem.
One of the most overlooked yet thoroughly damaged lots of depression fallout victims, she says, are the toddlers and children of depressed mothers. Children with behavioral problems at home and in school may be struggling for attention they don't get from a depressed parent. She writes, "Although a depressed parent of either sex creates problems for a child, the bulk of the research on parental depression and its effects on young children has zeroed in on the mother, because she is the center of a young child's existence: the primary nurturer, teacher, and emotional and social contact. Ideally, a mother is a good listener, communicator, and problem solver; authoritative without being authoritarian; warm and consistent; and tolerant and patient. Mothers in the grip of depression are often just the opposite: harsh, critical, impatient, irritable, and unaffectionate. And because one in every four women will suffer serious depression at some time in her life--more often than not, right in the middle of her prime childbearing years of twenty-five to thirty-five--the research findings are applicable to a very substantial number of children."
Without being flippant, Sheffield inserts bits of humor into the book. She describes what she calls "sticky-flypaper depressives" as those who blame themselves for everything and anything that has ever gone wrong, whether it be a relationship, or, as one psychiatrist recalled from one patient's session, "the bad Broadway season of 1947." She also gives a thorough analysis of the many causes of depression, illustrates the five stages of depression fallout, and considers the benefits and downfalls of psychotherapy and how a fallout victim may be affected by it. Sheffield offers reassuring advice on how fallout victims can defuse stress and rebuild their self-esteem and social lives, abundant resources and references for support groups and informational organizations, and an extensive list of medications commonly used for the treatment of mental disorders. No matter what the age or relationship of the fallout victim, How You Can Survive When They're Depressed will prove to be a much-needed dose of sympathy.
Book Description
Each year more than 17 million Americans suffer from a depressive illness, yet few suffer in solitude.
How You Can Survive When They're Depressed explores depression from the perspective of those who are closest to the sufferers of this prevalent disorder--spouses, parents, children, and lovers--and gives the successful coping strategies of many people who live with a clinical depressive or manic-depressive and often suffer in silence, believing their own problems have no claim to attention.
Depression fallout is the emotional toll on the depressive's family and close friends who are unaware of their own stressful reactions and needs. Sheffield outlines the five stages of depression fallout: confusion, self-doubt, demoralization, anger, and finally, the desire to escape. Many people will find relief in the knowledge that their self-blame, guilt, sadness, and resentment are a natural result of living with a depressed person.
Sheffield brings together many real-life examples from the pioneering support group she attends at Beth Israel Medical Center of how people with depression fallout have learned to cope. From setting boundaries to maintaining an outside social life, she gives practical tactics for handling the challenges and emotional stresses on a day-to-day basis.

A fantastic book.......2007-05-07
It is so helpful to know that I can name what I am experiencing, and that I am not alone. The advice and coping strategies in this book have changed my life immeasurably for the better.
how you can survive when theyre depressed........2007-01-18
I cannot praise this book enough. I have been dealing with my Husbands depression for the past ten years. I had been pulled down in to the black hole with him, believing it was all my fault how unhappy he was. This book has made me realise that it's not me, and its not him, its this awful illness he has. On bad days when everything seemed so hopeless I could read another chapter of this book and feel uplifted. It was like someone had written this book about us! It offers no end of helpful suggestions for yourself and the one you love. It has helped me bring it to my husbands attention and encourage him to get help.Fantastic!!
Remarkably written.......2007-01-12
This book deals with depression from the inside out. It is very informative and insightful and a book I would highly recommend for anyone who lives with a depressed person or is depressed.
A valuable read.......2006-11-06
This book can be a great help. If you are around someone who is suffering from depression, the load of everyday life can be terribly heavy. It helps so much to understand what is going on with your depressed loved one, but also to know that other people go through this too. The realization that you are not doing everything wrong, though the other makes you feel this way often, is very liberating. It can give you the strength you need to put more time and effort into helping the other conquer or understand their own inner tormentor. It can help you objectify the problem and your role in it, and protect yourself by keeping the necessary distance so that you don't get swallowed up by it - and sometimes even to walk away from it altogether if it threatens to destroy you. And if you can get the other to read it, too, then they can read a more objective - and less accusing - report on what life has been (or is) like for you, making it easier for them to understand what you have been going through, reducing the risk of an unproductive me-you discussion.
Though I tend to want to be self-reliant and think I don't need outside help, I don't honestly know if we (my then-boyfriend and I) would have been able to process, and leave behind us (and move on), the terrible period we had together had it not been for this book.
This book saved my marriage and changed my life!.......2005-05-27
As a spouse of a chronically depressed person, I love my husband but hate his disease. I was considering divorce only because I didn't want my young children to be scarred by the nasty affects of his disease.
Reading this book literally saved my marriage and has allowed us to set some ground rules that enable us to have a happy family life. Ms. Sheffield's explanations of the manifestations of the disease help the spouse to understand and adjust the enormous guilt and grief that comes from living with a depressed spouse.
I have recommended this book to everyone I talk with who is living with a depressed spouse. Her examples offer insight I've found nowhere else. AWESOME BOOK!!!!!

Vegan Deli: Jo Stepaniak Does It Again!.......2004-08-10
To see the words Vegan and Deli in the same sentence makes you do a double-take. Relax, it's true! Jo Stepaniak has taken the delicious, comforting world of deli foods and managed to make something wholesome and healthy out of it. When I think deli food, healthy doesn't exactly spring to mind. Enter Vegan Deli. This book has THE most amazing span of deli salads I have ever seen. "Cold Mushroom Salad with Cilantro and Cumin", "Fried Pepper and Tomato Salad", and the ever delectable "Caponata". Caponata is a cold Italian eggplant salad...an Italian salsa if you will. It is delicious eaten on its own out of a dish...but my preferred method of eating and presenting Caponata is topping some fresh crusty bread with it! Those are above and beyond the array of potato salads in this book such as "New Potato Salad With Olives and Capers". What first prompted me to buy this book was the "Pickled & Marinated Vegetables" section with it's many recipes such as "Mixed Vegetable Pickles" and "Pickled Eggplant 'Herring'"...Yum! For an amazingly simple dish that's sure to impress, I recommend the "Noodles in Peanut Sauce". I like to serve that with a simple salad and "Asian-Style Dressing". "Better Than Chicken Noodle Soup" is exactly what it's title suggests...my grandma never came close...Sorry Grandma! Another reader had mentioned the "Lemony Lentil Soup With Noodles and Mint" and I have to agree. Lentil soup has always been a favorite of mine, but I had never had it with this minty twist. It is to die for! "Classic Onion Soup" is another favorite. I like to make a batch of this, top with a recipe of Mostarella Cheese (from The Uncheese Cookbook, Jo Stepaniak), place in a tureen and bake. Just like the real thing. I am stuffed just writing about this delicious food, but could always save room for "Hot Apples" or "Ambrosia". Ambrosia is literally "food of the gods" and I must agree...it is simple yet exotic and truly exquisite. Well reader, I hope this review has helped sway you...You won't be disappointed with Vegan Deli!
A must have cookbook!.......2004-01-28
Vegan Deli is an amazing cookbook! Every recipe that I have ever made from it has been delicious, and absolutely ingenious. Not only am I in awe of the recipes from Vegan Deli, but my guests who have also dined on these recipes have shared the same sentiments. I am continuously asked by friends for the mouthwatering recipes that this book holds. Joanne Stepaniak continues to amaze me every time I bring her recipes to my table.
Some of my favorites so far include the black bean hummus, which has such a rich and wonderful flavor to it, yet it is not loaded with fat. Also the white bean salmon spread is always a party favorite when I bring it to gatherings. The lemony lentil soup literally had my guests moaning with delight. It brings the perfect combination of flavors together-red lentils and lemons. At the same time, Joanne adds a new twist to the lovely mixture by adding mint and noodles to the recipe. It truly is unique and delectable. The luscious cashew sesame bean "cheese" is a delightful spread for bagels. It reminds me slightly of cream cheese, but I find it much tastier than the cream cheese I remember from childhood. I love the tang of the lemon and the rich taste of the cashew butter mixed together with the bitterness of tahini. If I have not raved enough about the previous recipes, then perhaps this one might tempt you. The lentil walnut "chopped liver" is hands down one of the best foods I have ever eaten. It is wonderful on crackers, in sandwiches, or even just straight up with a spoon! It is worth buying the book for this recipe alone.
Not only do the recipes in Vegan Deli taste good, but they are also very healthful, easy to prepare, and light on the checkbook-making this cookbook one you do not want to miss out on having.
Fantastic!.......2003-09-12
You can't go wrong with anything from Joanne Stepaniak. She's the best vegan cook around. This book is excellent for any vegan or someone just looking into it.
I love this cookbook! :).......2003-09-10
I grew up with NYC style deli style foods, and this book is great! Most of the recipes are so easy, too!
I tried the Red Pepper "Lox" first, and my whole family loved it!
*Tip: we sprinkled nori granules (flakes of seaweed) on it for a subtle, fishy flavor!
I'm going to be preparing a lot of the salads often (especially the marinated veggie salads, salads with grains added (like bulgur), and the delicious Chick Pea "Tuna" Salad and White Bean "Salmon" Spread! :)
If you love NYC style deli salads/dairy type dishes/vegan cuisine, this is a wonderful cookbook for you, too!
