Convicted of the brutal ax murders of her mother and sister, Olive Martin spends her days in prison carving tiny human figures out of wax. Rosalind Leigh is a best-selling author whose publisher jolts her out of writer's block by telling her to research a book about Olive and the murders, or else. Though repelled by the idea at first, Rosalind soon becomes intrigued by her subject and begins to believe she may be innocent. She soon uncovers plenty of reasons to doubt the official police version of the killings and with Olive's help, untangles a sinister cover-up.
The Sculptress won the 1994 Edgar Award for best mystery novel.
Book Description
The facts of the case were simple: Olive Martin had pleaded guilty to killing and dismembering her sister and mother, earning herself the chilling nickname 'The Sculptress'.This much journalist Rosalind Leigh knew before her first meeting with Olive, currently serving a life sentence. How could Roz have foreseen that the encounter was destined to change her life-forever?

Walter's Mission.......2007-05-08
Minette Walters is recognized by many as the Queen of the British psychological mystery and for good reason. I would not hold them in the same class as Elizabeth George's fine novels but they are close and for sheer invention, they are superior. It is the hallmark of a great author that they can transform a rather overworked subject (woman chops up family) into an intense thriller and who should be the star but an obese woman who may or may not be telling the truth.
Ms Walters's writings remind me of the what the producer said about "The Thomas Crowne Affair" - it was a movie of, for and about adults. That could be said about Walter's writings that have intelligent, complex individuals far from their high school years. In this case, the heroine is a reporter who, through chance and pressure, decides to write a book about a famous crime for which the woman confessed. She is drawn (like the reader) into the real story of what happened and her convictions begin to form almost against her will. Is she being manipulated or is Olive Martin an innocent victim.
Along the way we are introduced to another character, a former cop now a restaurant owner and a a quirky romance develops (the best). Walters will most likely never have a hero or heroine walk into a bar, "eye a stranger" and bounce the bed springs two minutes later. Yes, that's the calibre of writing for most of today's movies and books, admittedly easier but such a copout. Instead, her characters develop, think, change and only slowly admit their deepest passions. A tremendously satisfying work - A+
Above average and Overrated.......2006-03-09
The premise of the story was interesting and the prose makes for smooth reading. But given the award and glowing reviews, I was expecting it to be much more than above average. The ending does not floor the reader as it should, given the nature of the ending. All in all, above average but overrated. Nevertheless, I'm still game to try another book from this author in the future.
OVERRATED !!!.......2005-07-08
I don't understand what so special about this book. The first half of the book is quite exciting. But in the later half - especially towards the ending - it becomes complicated, boring, almost incomprehensible.
The restaurant part of the story is so unnecessary and has nothing (or just a little bit) to do with the main storyline. The 'Olive doing her carvings and sticking pins on wax figures' constantly repeated and has nothing to do with the storyline. The conclusion is very confusing. We can never be so sure why the killer killed.
Sorry......this book is not good enough.
take Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine anyday.......
Intensely good!.......2005-03-31
The story is intense, sometimes disturbing and completely gripping. The characters are unique, complex and have both character flaws and assets, which makes them believable. A touch of romance adds some humour and lightheartedness contrast well with the rest of the dark story.
Unsatisfactory and unresolved.......2005-03-14
I must admit that I was bowled over by this book until the end. Meaning, that the end destroyed the high rating I might have given it. We spend the whole book trying to understand why the murders were committed, and also by whom, but what emerges in the end is only a possible theory. Walters still doesn't explain clearly why the mother was killed, and why both of them were so brutally slaughtered. And the last sentence invites us to rethink the whole 'solution'.
So why did I bother to read this book? When it leaves me wondering at the end who did it and why, and whether this woman is really innocent. That's the feeling we have while reading the entire novel. A good mystery should solve everything, explain all the little and big points, and this book fails big time at this.
I even re-read the parts where the final theories emerge, but they still left me hanging.
Customer Reviews:
A bit unorganized.............2007-05-12
I have had this book for one month now and have been following the program created for my body type. I have definitely seen a change-for the good-in my body in this time period. There is quite a variety of exercises Angela provides so it does not become tedious or boring which helps you to stick to the program for a long time. There is a glossary of the exercises in the back of the book, however, when you do your routine for that day you must continually leaf through about 20-30 pages of the glossary to find each particular exercise because the page number is not provided next to each exercise. What I have done to save time is go over the next day of weight-training and find the exercise in the glossary and write down the pg. number next to it so when that day comes I can go right to the example. Of course when the moves become more familiar to me I won't need to go back and look at the glossary but I am going into my second month and still need to make sure I use proper form.
Also, her advice about eating six small meals a day instead of 3 normal sized meals was hard to swallow at first but with some effort and creativity it has become easier than I thought and truly DOES make a difference in maintaining your metabolism.
Overall I am satisfied with the book because of the results I have achieved so far so if you don't mind marking pages and going back and forth to write down page numbers here or there then for the price I would recommend this book.

ALL IS NOT AS IT SEEMS..........2006-05-27
This is an intriguing, well written mystery which garnered the 1994 Edgar Award for best novel of the year for British writer, Minette Walters, who has written quite a number of excellent books. She is a writer in the tradition of that other great British novelist, Ruth Rendell, known also as Barbara Vine. The comparison by those who are familiar with the works of both Ms. Walters and Ms. Rendell is inescapable.
This book revolves around two main stories that become by necessity intertwined. One is that of a morbidly obese, young woman, Olive Martin, who is imprisoned for the brutal and grisly murders of her mother, Gwen, and beautiful, younger sister, Amber, whose butchered bodies shocked even the most jaded of folks. On the eve of trial, Olive made a full confession to the crime and received a prison sentence of not less than twenty-five years for her butchery. Known in prison as "The Sculptress", she passes the time making miniature, carved, wax images, a delicate and sensitive pastime for one with a reputation for such primal savagery.
Enter Rosalind "Roz" Leigh, a thirties something author suffering from writer's block, who accepts a commission to write about the Olive Martin case. After meeting Olive, she becomes intrigued by her, finding her to be other than what she had expected, and a symbiotic relationship develops between the two. As she delves into the facts of the murder case, and as her interviews with Olive reveal, all is not quite what it seems. The more that Roz sorts through the facts and the more people that she interviews who were in some way associated with the Martin family, the more she becomes convinced that a miscarriage of justice has occurred and that the wrong person is paying a horrific price for the grisly murders of Gwen and Amber.
Someone, however, does not wish her to dig too deeply. With the aid of a former police sergeant, Hal Hawksley, an attractive, though conflicted, young man who is now her new love interest and was also the officer who arrested Olive for the murders, Roz stays the course and perserveres in her inquiry. What she discovers is a complex morass of human indifference, greed, and passion that makes for a compelling and well crafted mystery.

Slimy Rats and Strategic Tooth Loss.......2006-08-20
My chief reactions after finishing Tainted Blood were "Woooooo!" and "What happens next?" which are pretty much some of the best things I can say about a book. If what happens next (and there better be a "next") is anything like what has just happened, there will definitely be lots of gore, witty banter, and some of the most disgusting bad guys I've ever encountered.
Witty banter notwithstanding, Long novels are all about the action. If I hadn't just seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe so many death-or-glory fight scenes, sudden plot twists, and rapid allegiance shifts could occur in just 253 trade paperback pages. More happens in Tainted Blood than in George R.R. Martin's last four novels combined.
It's like a good high-body-count Schwartzenegger movie -- except that our man Reiner doesn't become immune to arrows and sword thrusts when he loses his shirt. Not to mention the rest of his trusty crew, who litter the (many) battle grounds behind them with plenty of fingers, pieces of ears, and teeth. Except for girl archer Franka, of course. Long knows his audience. Gaming guys don't go for girls with gaps in their grins. Or ugly scars on their decolletage, for that matter.
Do Franka and Reiner finally connect? I'm not saying. In fact, I'm still not sure. I really want to know what happens next.

It's Still the One.......2007-09-01
This is still a great cookbook with helpful ideas for creating delicious and nutritious meals. I love their blueberry cobbler recipe and still use it at least once a month.
usefulish book.......2007-08-10
Well I'm not american nor a woman but found this book great - I actualy discovered my copy in an aprtment in Boston near Notheatern when I lived there for a summer. the recipies were pretty crap (insert mick dundee quote here) but some of the ideas on protein complementarity were interesting
Classic cookbook but dated. .......2007-07-16
I have to respect the work and effort done in researching this excellent book on not only the political, financial and moral impact of a diet dominated by meat, but also the reasons to abandon a meat emphasis for the sake of our health. Many of the chapters are powerfully written, although they get a bit 'statically heavy'. Still it's a good read.
My primary issue is the recipes at the end of the book. Almost all use animal products of some kind, which defeats the idea of keeping the diet for the planet accessible to all. Many meals depend heavily on milk, cheese and eggs to provide protein, and this is just not necessary.
Good recipes' however can be adapted and these are good recipes. All in all, it was worth the purchase price.
Good primer for the beginning vegetarian cook.......2007-06-05
I want to defend the recipes, after several reviewers have attacked them. I'm not saying EVERYTHING in the cookbook is scrumptious, but then again, I wouldn't say that of ANY cookbook I've ever seen. This is probably the most practical book for someone to own when they're beginning to try to cook vegetarian meals, either as an exclusive diet or as an occasional alternative to meat. Sure, Deborah Madison's VEGETARIAN COOKING FOR EVERYONE and the ubiquitous MOOSEWOOD COOKBOOK are more gourmet, but that's not an unmixed blessing for a beginning cook (or a beginning vegetarian). DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET has a variety of recipes contributed by different cooks with a variety of skill levels and tastes. Some of them are blessedly easy and quite delicious, e.g., lentil pastitsio, and Roman red beans and rice, both of which I've served at parties and seen devoured enthusiastically by non-vegetarians. It also suggests ways of sneaking some protein into unexpected places like breads and cakes--an invaluable skill for any parent of a finicky toddler, vegetarian or not. Unlike the more gourmet vegetarian cookbooks, DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET doesn't assume that you're starting with fresh heirloom vegetables from farmer's markets, gourmet cheeses, and a fully equipped chef's kitchen where you grind your own spices. If you want to make a decent meatless meal with whatever's marked down this week at the supermarket, this is your guide. Unlike the more gourmet vegetarian cookbooks I sometimes use, DIET has nutritional information to help you plan a meal that you know isn't shortchanging your family on protein. All in all, I think this is an essential book for beginners in vegetarian cooking.
Diet For Small Minds.......2007-04-28
I remember being one of the first hippies on my block to buy this book in the early 1970's. At the time I was a vegetarian, which of course was mandatory for us members of the back-to-the-earth crowd. At the time, I thought highly of this book. The book has been criticized for containing recipes that range from bland to unpalatable, but some of the recipes tried by I and my earth-mamma wife at the time were actually not bad. In fact I knew a few folks back then who never drove Volkswagon Beetles with peace signs and flowers painted on them, and yet tried and liked some of these recipes. But that was then. As humans, if we fail to mature and grow intellectually, we are fools. I still see far too many souls from the pathetically naive baby boom generation who have been frozen in time like a mosquito in an iceberg. And similarly, there are still people who think this book is an intellectual tour-de-force. If they ever decide to develop their brains, they will be able to look back and see that this book is overly simplistic and is based on far too many misconceptions and false or unproven assumptions to be considered a great work. If you are the type who religiously believes in anthropogenic global warming, in spite of the complete absence of scientific proof and in spite of the growing evidence about natural climate cycles, you will love this book. But you might want to get out of your comfort zone and start developing some objective analytical abilities before it's too late.

Thirty years after Frances Lappe's Diet for a Small Planet changed eating habits around the world, she and her daughter Anna bring us a new round of iconoclastic recommendations that break overwhelming issues down to a simple matter of personal choice. Hope's Edge presents many of the same issues of the original title, but it also provides a wealth of new discoveries and possibilities in this era of genetically engineered foods, worldwide famine, and growing rates of obesity-related health issues.
Beyond discussing a wide range of reasons to become a vegetarian (and that means no fish or chicken either, folks), the authors introduce you to a number of individual reasons for hope--Bob, the Wisconsin cheese maker; Jean-Yves, the farmer from Brittany who created the Sustainable Agriculture Network; and Muhammad Yunas, who has changed the lives of countless living in poverty with his remarkable microcredit programs. Along with these stories and the theories they're based on, you'll also find luscious recipes calling for grains, fruits, vegetables, and a handful of dairy products that will delight your taste buds and your conscience.
The Lappes firmly believe that the choices of low-level consumers have the potential to make positive changes, both in the world economy and in our physical health. By eating a vegetarian diet, shopping with care, and cooking with love, we might all brighten our future tremendously. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Hope's Edge follows the author of the classic Diet for a Small Planet and her daughter as they travel the world, discovering practical visionaries who are making a difference in world hunger, sometimes one village at a time.
Thirty years ago, Frances Moore Lappé started a revolution in the way Americans think about food and hunger. Now Frances and her daughter, Anna, pick up where Diet for a Small Planet left off. Together they set out on an around-the-world journey to explore the greatest challenges we face in the new millennium. Traveling to Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe, they discovered answers to one of the most urgent issues of our time: whether we can transcend the rampant consumerism and capitalism to find the paths that each of us can follow to heal our lives as well as the planet.
Featuring nearly seventy recipes from celebrated vegetarian culinary pioneers-including Alice Waters, Mollie Katzen, Laurel Robertson, Nora Pouillon, and Anna Thomas-Hope's Edge highlights true trailblazers engaged in social, environmental, and economic transformations.
Customer Reviews:
2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner featured in the book.......2006-10-13
This is a very interesting book. It features in one part a detailed description of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, who used microloans to help Bangladeshis, especially women, get out of poverty and earn for themselves. By issuing very small loans, the people of Bangladesh are able to build their businesses or working conditions and change their lives. I recommend this book.
Hope Gained From Insight and Diligence.......2006-08-16
Thirty years after the publication of the highly acclaimed "Diet For A Small Planet", Frances and her daughter Anna Lappe have come out with a potent sequel and a beautiful statement of hope for a more equitable world through the world-wide spread of organic and sustainable agriculture techniques and locally controlled "fair" market modalities now challenging the status quo of chemical fed, toxic pesticide/GMO laden crops, and the lopsided "free" market capitalist WTO agenda that has been reaping havoc on the environment and small farmers everywhere.
The Lappes traveled to 5 continents while researching this book and their travels are both fascinating and uplifting as they report on people all over the world demonstrating that going organic and controlling their own markets are reaping major benefits in healthy, abundant food production while cleaning up the environment.
The Lappes do not reject world trade or capitalism, rather, they demonstrate how unregulated "free" markets monopolized by huge international corporations have been inadvertently causing food scarcity, bankrupting and polluting people all over the world, yet with an injection of regulation in the form ethics, strict fair trade measures, etc., they believe capitalism can "evolve" to a more sustainable, equitable, and healthy method of food distribution- a similar optimistic view shared by Lovins and Hawken in their book, "Natural Capitalism".
The inefficiencies of nutrient and food distribution is brought home in quantifying the huge amount of crops, water, and land required to feed cattle. The amount of energy necessary to produce an ounce of meat could feed hundreds of people on a much healthier vegetarian diet, hence, the myth of food scarcity and the need to grow more food to feed the world.
Every chapter finishes with a recipe and there are many more at the end of the book along with several pages of resources and contact information on a host of organizations advocating social responsibility.
Be gentle on the earth.......2006-02-22
Good copy. Excellent vegetarian recipes. Explains why we need to eat lower on the food chain. If we do, we can feed the world's hungry people.
Goes into my life's top 5.......2004-11-21
I won't say much here, because the other reviewers have described the book well. All I will say is that this is one of the very best books I have ever read. Not only does Lappe have an incredible way with words, but she summarizes her profound insights in such a way that really organizes one's thoughts for genuine reflection. Add to that a well-documented and researched approach, as well as fascinating stories of different communities around the world which they themselves visited.
Honest Hope.......2004-05-25
Hope's Edge is a Must Read for Everyone! The book puts it all together in an easy-to-understand, personal and honest fashion: the connection between consumerism, 'brainwashing', oppression, global economy, poverty, exploitation etc. etc. The concepts presented in this book are sophisticated and have depth. I liked the personal tone of the book, the story telling. The book is very honest, the stories told utterly inspiring. Frances and Anna never 'whitewash' the porlbmes the projects they are describing are facing. This truth-telling makes the stories even more impressive, more credible. The very existence of these projects defy the global systems as we know them. The way they do 'business' defies the global system of exploitation and competition. This book makes us take an honest look at ourselves, our values, the daily choices we make, what we consume, how we live. This is not just 'about food' or poverty or world hunger, this is truly food for thought and inspiration of how to create a better world."

Chapter 4: The Argument for Global Ecology.......2003-04-24
Though I've only read Chapter 4, "The Argument for Global Ecology," for an ecology class, I found it to be very eye-opening. It, and a supportive and like-minded friend, have convinced me to go mostly vegetarian. Hill uses clear writing, sobering facts, and a balanced perspective to make his case for environmental vegetarianism. The reason I gave it only 4 stars is because, while I haven't read the other chapters, I'm not generally convinced by animal rights or health reasons for vegetarianism. However, Chapter 4 alone changed my life.
Life-changing book.......2000-02-05
This is the book that convinced me to become a vegetarian. The arguments are well-presented and the author addresses many important issues such as myths about vegetarianism.
Well Intentioned But Poorly Executed.......1999-08-02
I am a vegetarian. I've read the book and found numerous errors. Some are little, some medium, some of the worst are omissions. I have read two reviews of this book that pan it. One in Environmental Ethics, the other in Ethics. I respect the author's intentions and respect him for them.
an accessible vegetarian defense manual.......1998-04-06
Mr Hill has written a very accessible and easily read case for vegetarianism. Vegetarians defend those who cannot defend themselves. However, sometimes vegetarians themselves are incapable of defense against carnivores. They should read this book and never be afraid again to debate with carnivoracious opponents.

Customer Reviews:
The worst muffin book I've ever used!.......2007-07-15
DO NOT waste your money on this book! It's the worst muffin book I have ever seen. Bland, boring, tasteless muffins. I don't know what book these positive reviewers are talking about, it can't possibly be this muffin book! Don't buy it!!!
Awesome book!.......2007-07-08
This is an awesome muffin cookbook! I have been searching for a book just like this one that has recipes for muffins that are tasty and also good for you for years. I love that the author uses whole grains, less sugar in most of the recipes, and adds nutritious ingredients to all of her muffins. Some of her listed ingredients can be exchanged for other ingredients to make the muffins vegan, if you choose. This cookbook is not for the baker who wants to bake with only white flour (all of the recipes call for some other type of flour such as whole wheat, rice, buckwheat, cornmeal, etc) or for those who scoff at alternative ingredients (such as applesauce, fruit purees, fruit juice concentrates, etc), but these recipes are still easy to prepare. I can't wait to try all of the recipes in this book and would strongly recommend it to anyone who also wants a healthy, good for you muffin cookbook!
Best Muffin Cookbook!.......2007-04-01
I borrowed this book from the library because I LOVE muffins. After reading through it, I was surprised to find that the recipes are healthy! They are not loaded with sugar or empty calories, but instead they include whole grains, berries, vegetable purees, and very little fat.
I poured through this book and have made several muffins so far. Despite the natural ingredients, one of the recipes I made was the BEST tasting muffin recipe I have ever made. I am SO GLAD I found this cookbook, and I can't wait to try all of the other recipes.
This book was not designed to be an easy or "basic" muffin cookbook, but rather a wholesome, good tasting on.
Not as Advertised.......2007-02-18
I bought this for my daughter as a birthday gift and was very disappointed. The receipies call for 2 or 3 different types of flour and many replace fat with apple sauce. I was looking for basic muffins with a number of flavor ideas. This isn't it.
A winner--creative, healthful, delicious muffins.......2006-09-21
This book contains so many intriguing recipes that I couldn't wait to try! I spent a few days experimenting eagerly with the ones that particularly caught my eye: Pumpkin-Chocolate Chip Muffins (devoured by the whole family!), Ladda's Lemon Ginger Muffins (my daughter exclaimed, "There's a yummy burst of lemon flavor from the first bite!"), White Chocolate with Raspberry Muffins, Cafe Crumble Muffins, and even French Onion Soup Muffins. I can't wait to try out more of the recipes--such as Orange Cardamom Muffins and Steven's Sun-Dried Tomato Muffins (with spinach).
If you're not used to healthful baking, some of the ingredients might sound foreign, but find a natural foods store or a well-stocked grocery store, and give them a try--they're not only better for you than the white flour and sugar varieties but taste great, too! Pair these muffins with a salad or soup for a lovely, inspired meal.
In my opinion, you can't go wrong with a cookbook that contains a recipe for Seven-Factors-of-Enlightenment Muffins! Making these recipes is like a mindfulness meditation--you can slow down and savor the subtle aromas, flavors, and the interaction between the different ingredients, knowing you're creating something that's wholesome for your body, mind, and soul.
