A dark tale, but an intriguing one........2003-05-14

Though The Nun's Tale is one of the darker stories in the series, I enjoyed the book very much. It dealt a little more with the ramifications of warfare and how it was conducted during the 14th Century but there were enough twists and turns of plot to keep the mystery going as well. As in some of her other works, Robb again brings the ending of this one to a realistic conclusion. Above all, it gives monastic life at this time very realistic look.

Again the notes to the back of the book are a great help with the history of the period. In each novel the author introduces some of the background material: religious and political personalities of the time, historic events, pertinent social information, etc. One of the more unique facts I discovered were that soldiers who were taken to the European mainland during wartime were not always returned to their starting point. They were merely abandoned when the nobility returned home unless they could pay their own way back. This left freebooters to run rampant in the countryside of the invaded country and contributed to the hardships suffered even after the war.

The book is a good source of learning about this period in history, and might make a good starting point for students who find history a "dull" subject. The is thoroughly readable and comprehendible to anyone from junior high to adults. It might, however, be a little more mature than some parents may prefer for their junior high students. The test would be to read it oneself.

In fact, I liked The Nun's Tale more than Robb's first two Owen Archer mysteries. (Actually, I sat down and re-read the first two books in the series before I read the third one because it had been such a long time since I had read them that I didn't really remember the stories. I found that I liked the first two books more this time than I did the first time I read them.) The Nun's Tale did such a good job of holding my interest, that I could hardly put it down. The history was interesting, and the characters were believable and very strong. The only part that I wondered about was why the characters who were suppose to be so good at unraveling mysteries - and seemed to be pretty discerning people - didn't catch onto the brother/sister thing that was going on much sooner than they did. This was something I picked up on fairly early in the story. And I also have to say that I didn't really find Dame Joanna to be a very likeable character - and, in many ways, she wasn't suppose to be very likeable.

Robb Brings Medieval Times to Life.......2000-04-21

Though Dame Joanna claims to have been resurrected in order to return a relic she had stolen from St. Clement's nunnery, no one knows the truth of her story. Did she ever really die? And why did she run away from St. Clement's in the first place? Soldier-sleuth Owen Archer is sent to unravel the mystery, and he and his wife, Lucie, are dragged into the case until they are in danger of losing their lives. Candace Robb's mystery is a well-written story and an easy read. Characters, setting, and plot are all well-developed, drawing the reader into Owen and Lucie's adventures.

Gryylth faces new threat.......2000-10-08

Suzanne Helling is thrust into the fantasy realm of Gryylth.This time she faces guns and f11s! but how can there be guns in a medieval world? Gael Baudino turns fantasy on its head as her character has to face the land she her self created and how do you beat your self? the writing is excellent and the charactor are well formed and the hazards they face are not just to the body. This book is worth reading.

Alouzon Dragonmaster searches for the Grail.......1998-03-11

The best book in the trio, DoD brings in Sol's exwife, and gives Marrget, and Wykla something to live for. We also get to go deeper into Alouzon's psyche. Not for the faint at heart, I highly recommend this book and the rest of the trio.

The best exercise workout program.......2007-06-09

This is a wonderful program. The book is very insightful and informative. The exercises are not strenuous and yet you can see results. The amazing part is that I do the exercises every day. I haven't missed a day since I started on the program. I've lost weight and feel that I am getting into the best shape I've ever been. I would highly recommend this book for young and old.

Be careful!!.......2007-02-01

This may be a good book, but I highly recommend anyone experiencing health problems consult with a professional before going directly to a book. I tried using this book after having some back problems. After trying the excercises for almost a week my back pain became so severe I could not walk. My husband had to carry me to the clinic. My doctor had to shoot drugs into me at the clinic because I was fainting onto the floor from the pain. She said to stop those exercises immediately. I also spoke to a physical therapist and a naturopath and all were horrified at recommending anyone doing "the Cobra" without direct observation (I think it was that stretch that disabled me). I am worse off then when I started.

So, please be careful becfore using these excercises without talking to a professional first and making sure you are doing them properly. I am only 34 years old and and went through childbirth 2 years ago with no painkillers. I can usually handle pain, but this was unreal.

The Core Program Book.......2007-01-29

I have had this book since last year and just re-read it again, because of some backpain I acquired (nice way of putting it !). It is an absolute must in my house, because it's easy to follow her exercises, producing the expected results. Lots of pictures and logical instructions. I had met a lady in NYC who had been treated by Peggy Brill. Needless to say, she feels fantastically healthy now. Is 90 yrs. old, had been in a wheelchair because of arthritis and osteoporosis, and was ready to stop living.
Of course, she does her particular exercises on a regular basis, and so do I, less regularly ... I think Mrs. Brill is on to something important, and I am glad I own her books. I also have her "Instant Relief-Tell Me Where I Hurts" paperback, which is really, really helpful and a super reference guide.

GREAT BOOK TO HELP YOU SLIM DOWN AND FIRM UP. CORE EXERCISES SEEM TO BE THE KEY. FINDING THE 15 MINUTES PER DAY HOWEVER IS THE CULPRIT FOR ME. I JUST NEED TO SET ASIDE THE TIME AND I AM SURE THE BOOK WILL HELP. NICELY ILLUSTRATED WITH STRAIGHTFORWARD INSTRUCTIONS. A WIN-WIN SITUATION.

I am just in love with this book.......2007-05-28

Everytime I open this cookbook I smile. It's a pleasure to cook using the recipes. The illustrations are country classic, beautiful and adorbale, and the text is like handwriting.
Oh, and the recipes.......

Choose from:
Pan Fried Chicken and Gravy, Banana Cream Pie, Gazpacho, Turkey stuffing, twice baked potatoes, and artichoke dip...this cook book has something for everyone. I like her notes on the recipes and feel like I know her. You feel instantly at home when you pull out this book, and make a delicous dish. I could enjoy a day just reading it though, and flipping through it.
You have to own this one.

Simply Wonderful!.......2003-02-20

This is my favorite Susan Branch cookbook. I have made many of the dishes, with some of my favorites being the stuffed artichokes, gazpacho ( both of which are perfect for a light summer dinner), banana cream pie (Dad loved it for father's day), blueberry pie, apple crisp (on a cool fall evening), the cucumber-dill dressing (refreshing and wonderful for summer), home-made mayonnaise, chocolate cream puffs(made for a tea...looked elegant and was so easy to make), and the stuffed french bread (easy and fun to take to a potluck). I lean toward the dessert sections and appetizers the most, but all of the recipes are delicious. I love her notes about the dishes and little quotes and drawings throughout the book. This one is definitely a keeper and would be a great gift also. I now own all of her books and this is by far the one that I use the most.
Treat yourself....or someone you know...you'll be glad you did.

One of my favorite cookbooks.......2002-09-29

I found "Heart of the Home" accidently while shopping for something else at [local store]. Everything I've made from this cookbook has been excellent! The carrot cake is to die for! The book is also pretty to look at with all of her artwork, and her stories are endearing...makes you want to live on Martha's Vineyard. I've given this book to several friends, and they've all enjoyed it! One of my favorites.

A beautiful cookbook - a perfect gift.......2000-06-13

This is not only a beautifully illustated cookbook, but it is a cookbook full of recipes that are not only easy to make, but delicious. The carrot cake is my favorite, although I have tried many of the recipes and have yet to find one I did not like. I have given this as a gift for birthdays, bridal showers and mother's day and have found that it is perfect for a "new" cook or experienced one!

I received this book soon after I was married, when all I could cook were hot dogs. This book taught me that I can make easy, delicious meals that everyone wants the recipe for! I have given this book to at least 3 people and am buying it yet again.

I think that Susan Branch has an incredible talent and I thoroughly enjoyed this calendar. For those people that were disappointed they should have bought her other 2001 calendar, there were 2 different "Heart of the Home" versions. The one shown has the stories and anecdotes, the other does not. Thanks, Susan, for sharing your talent with all of us!

I am very disapointed by this new calendar. No writing at every pages, not funny or cute stories about everything. I don't known if I am going to buy the next one. Did anywone known if they are any other calendar, like this one in 1999 ? A warm hello from France !

I just received the new Heart of the Home 2001 Calendar - beautiful as ever, and I love all the new products that Susan Branch has recently put out. Stencil's, note pads, journals, stickers - all so beautiful, and very heart warming

I too was disappointed in the the 2001 Calendar I got, but later discovered that this one was the "recipe calendar", and that she has a "chocolate" calendar, and a "flower" calendar. check your calendar's. Enjoy!

Not what I expected...!!.......2000-08-26

As a true Susan Branch fan with every book, calendar, address book, etc she's ever published, I am so dissapointed with this new calendar. The format isn't the same as years past. I guess I'm not ready to change. This years edition is just one large picture per month. No cute sayings, doodles, recipes, etc. I like the older ones better...Susan please go back to the old format...that's what makes them "you".! I'll anxiously await next years!
