Don't understand the hype.......2007-08-21
I am completely perplexed by the multitude of 5-star reviews for this cookbook. 35 of 37 reviews gave 5 stars, the other 2 reviews 4 stars at the time of writing this. Not a single other person out there was even remotely dissatisfied? Something seems wrong...
I'm not Vietnamese but I live near Little Saigon and eat there quite often so I think I have a pretty good grasp of the cuisine and how everything should taste. It's my favorite cuisine, and I have even learned to cook some of the dishes from friends, etc. I bought this book because I wanted to expand my repetoire, however, everything I have tried has come out tasting 'off'.
I found the directions in the recipes to be either misleading or not descriptive enough. Take the bu'n rie^u recipe, for example. The ingredients call for a large onion, pealed. In the directions, she just instructs you to saute the onion in a small skillet. Obviously you are not expected to saute a whole onion, however there is no mention as to whether you should quarter it, dice it, chop or mince it, etc. as you would expect in any other cookbook. Not to mention a large onion + shallots + crab won't even fit in a small skillet. That may sound picky but for a cuisine that is still considered somewhat exotic and unfamiliar to most Americans I think these kind of details are very important if the food is going to come out right.
The good aspects of this book are the descriptions of the culture, cuisine, and history of Little Saigon and it's people, which is really quite interesting. I just wouldn't recommend using this book to try cooking the food. I would suggest maybe trying the more detailed (albeit more difficult) "Into the Vietnamese Kitchen" cookbook for that.
In short, to^i kho^ng thi'ch sa'ch na`y.
Thank you!!!.......2007-07-09
I am an Indian who is married to a Vietnamese. I have always loved cooking and never have been afraid to try something different. I am always searching for authentic Vietnamese cookbooks in English and I have to say that this one is going to be my favorite. I thank Ms. Le for writing this book in such a detail and for her recipes.
Love it!.......2007-04-12
I like to try my hand at cooking foods I enjoy eating in restaurants and Vietnamese happens to be one of my favorites. I borrowed this book from the library and cooked several dishes, all which came out absolutely delicious. I liked it so much that after I returned the book to the library, I bought my own copy on amazon. It looks like I'll be able to recreate my favorite rice vermicelli, spring rolls, and pho dishes at home on a regular basis. For anyone who wants to try their hand at cooking Vietnamese dishes at home this one's a definite keeper.
Armenian man with a vietnamese food fetish .......2007-03-03
I've always had a thing for vietnamese food. I love everything about it, only problem is, I've just never been able to cook any of it. Born into an Armenian kitchen, the flavors, spices, and methods of cooking I've learned do me no good. I had resigned myself to eating out for vietnamese the rest of my life.
Then I saw an article in the March issue of Sunset magazine. A girl with dimples promising to teach me how to make vietnamese food. On a rare impulse, I bought The Little Saigon Cookbook (I think it hit a chord of sentimentality since I live in LIttle Armenia). The recipes are simple, fast, and delicious! I've now been able to make new friends and influence people using my new found cullinary skills. Thank you Ann Le!

Book Description
In the aftermath of the war in Vietnam, thousands of desperate refugees fled the killing fields for new lives in Southern California. But for those who settled in "Little Saigon," the war never really ended. The latest victim of the continuing struggle is Li Frye, a popular singer whose songs of hope and home have made her a heroine to her people. Ripped from the stage by masked gunmen, she has vanished into the dark alleys of Little Saigon, where outsiders are met with suspicion and a stony silence as impenetrable as the steaming jungles of Vietnam.
Local surfing legend turned reporter Chuck Frye knows what it means to be an outsider. The black sheep of his wealthy family, Chuck is more at home on a longboard than in a boardroom. But Li is his sister-in-law, and he cannot sit back and let his family or the clueless police investigate the case alone. What Chuck cannot know is that he stands upon the crest of a deadly wave, a swirling vortex of corruption and violence that reaches to the highest levels of the United States intelligence community. And even as he comes closer to the truth, he draws nearer to a terrible secret that many would kill to keep.

Surprisingly Mundane Mystery.......2006-08-04
Bennett Frye is a man who left his legs in Vietnam, but hasn't let this stop him. His wife Li is an icon of the Vietnamese refugee community in Orange County California. His brother Chuck is a former world class surfer whose business is on the rocks while his life is falling apart. Their father Edison is in the process of building the largest development in the area, Laguna Paradiso which will be a self-contained community with ocean views.
When Li is kidnapped, many of the disparate threads below the surface of Little Saigon, begin to surface and therein is our story. The problem with this book is that everyone is two dimensional. It's impossible to care what happens to these people because we truly have no reason to care. TJ Parker has built an interesting if implausible story line but the people who populate it aren't.
I had read some many reviews of Parker's works that I wanted to start by reading one of his earliest books. Bad idea. From what I understand you would be best off starting and stopping with "California Girl".
Look for something else..........2005-05-07
OK, the guy can write clear English sentences, but:
The characters are insipid and unsympathetic. The plot is underwhelming, trite, often predictable. The dialogue made me wince. The story is quite dated given the current state of US-Vietnam relations (though the novelist can hardly be blamed for that). Nonethelss, I did finish it... I say, look for something else.
Pure Garbage.......2000-07-08
Really really bad, jingoist, myopic, unthrilling thriller. I usually like T. Jefferson, but I hated this one. Blech!
A surprising hit.......1998-06-24
As a reader of all T. Jefferson Parker's novels, I held back on buying and reading this one for some time, but since I enjoyed his other books I gave this a try.
Boy was I happy! For me this was definetly the sleeper hit for T. Jefferson Parker. The excitement and plot twists kept my attention. I was really bummed to finish. It was a great insight into the Vietnamese culture of Westminister, CA.
A few flashback scenes really helped explain the motivations of some of the key figures.
Exceptional
Book Description
From the evacuation of Saigon in 1975 to the end of the twentieth century, the United States committed its forces to more than a dozen military operations. Offering a fresh analysis of the Iranian hostage rescue attempt, the invasions of Granada and Panama, the first Gulf War, the missions in Somalia and Bosnia, and more, author and distinguished U.S. naval captain Peter Huchthausen presents a detailed history of each military engagement through eyewitness accounts, exhaustive research, and his unique insider perspective as an intelligence expert. This timely and riveting military history is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the nature of war today (Stephen Trent Smith).
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating overview of an eventful era in U.S. military history.......2005-08-28
"America's Splendid Little Wars: A Short History of U.S. Engagements from the Fall of Saigon to Baghdad," by Peter Huchthausen, is a fascinating guide to a quarter century of American military actions. Starting with the S.S. _Mayaguez_ incident off the coast of Cambodia in 1975, Huchthausen tells the story of many missions: the failed 1980 attempt to rescue hostages in Iran, intervention in Lebanon in the 1980s, the 1983 Grenada invasion, the 1986 attack on Libya, activities in the Persian Gulf in the late 1980s, intervention in Panama in 1989, Operation Desert Shield (1990-91) and the 1991 Gulf War, the 1991 relief effort on behalf of the Kurds of northern Iraq, actions in Somalia in the early 1990s, intervention in Bosnia in the 1990s, and the 1999 Kosovo campaign.
The book is full of good features: logical organization, more than a dozen clear and informative maps, several pages of black-and-white photographs, a comprehensive nine-page bibliography, and an index. Huchthausen's prose style is clear and to-the-point. A paragraph about the author notes that he is a retired U.S. Navy captain, and that he served as an analyst of the Soviet navy, a submarine expert, and a naval attache. In his introduction Huchthausen notes that the phrase "splendid little war" was used in 1898, by a U.S. ambassador, to describe the Spanish-American War (incidentally, Theodore Roosevelt's classic memoir of that war, "The Rough Riders," would make a great companion text for this book). Huchthausen notes the irony of his book's title: "The U.S. military encounters from 1975 to 1999 were neither splendid nor small."
Huchthausen offers gripping descriptions of the unfolding events, both political and military, of each "little war." He gives historical backgrounds for the conflicts and also provides interesting analyses of the U.S. actions. Significant recurring themes include relations between the press and the military, the combination of assets from different branches of the U.S. military, and the use of unconventional forces such as Navy SEALs and the Army's Delta Force. We get glimpses of some fascinating personalities: U.S. Admiral William J. Crowe, Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega, Somali warlord Muhammad Farah Aideed, Grenadian Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, and more. In an afterword (to the 2004 edition), Huchthausen reflects on more recent U.S. wars in Afghanistan (since 2001) and Iraq (since 2003).
Yes, one can only fit so much information into the relatively short space allotted to each "little war," and at times I felt that the book didn't give a full enough story. Still, as a general overview of this era the book is very useful, and the excellent bibliography offers interested readers plenty more places to go if he or she wants to learn more. For additional companion texts that cover some of the same material from other valuable perspectives, I recommend "Warrior Soul: The Memoir of a Navy SEAL," by Chuck Pfarrer, and "Inside Delta Force," by Eric Haney. Overall, I consider "America's Splendid Little Wars" a well-written and valuable book--in particular, essential reading for contemporary military professionals.

Weird.......2003-07-17
I thought this book was weird. It was definitely oversexed. I didn't appreciate the Striper character. Nyx smith uses a very strange writing style. I don't have my copy with me -- isn't this in the present tense? Read this if you're tired of ordinary novels.
An excellent story for one of SR best characters........2000-04-25
Striper is one of the most well developed characters in the world of Shadow Run. She is extremely exciting to read and the story keeps you in suspense until the very end. This awsomely written book is a defiant 'must read' for any fan of SR.
a werecat's mind.......1999-12-16
Striper Assassin was the first Shadowrun I ever read, and though there are others that might be easier to start with, such as Shadowplay, I must say that this one's really cool. With Striper, Nyx Smith has created one of the best Shadowrun characters ever, and it's just great to watch her run the shadows, looking for prey ... Also, the book fits in nicely into the Shadowrun universe - Nyx Smith even has Dodger, the Elf decker out of the Secrets of Power trilogy, as a guest star in it.
this book is a must have.......1998-07-09
If you've ever played shadowrun and wanted to be really enthrawled in a good shadowrun book this is for you! it reminded me vagually of the sega genesis game. great read!
Nyx Smith's 1st forray into the world of Shadowrun is great!.......1998-01-18
This story of a werecat assasin was a great exercise in characterization. Nyx Smith literally makes you understand the mind of the tiger - the predator. Striper is great and so is this book

Customer Reviews:
ways of knowing.......2007-05-15
Women's ways of knowing -just like Perry's book (1970)- shows in a clear manner the epistemological development after adolescence. The described 'ways of knowing' bear a close resemblance to Perry's 'positions' or Baxter Magolda's ERM. We have shown that these models portray a development that is also described by our own learning/teaching conceptions model.
Female Engineer "discovers" her own voice.......2007-03-31
This book represents a real setback for women, rational thought, science, scholarship, America and Western civilization. Women do not have separate "ways of knowing." This is truly drivel. An intelligent and educated person is someone who is prepared to collect evidence, evaluate its quality, weight its strength and reach a defensible conclusion. This statement remains true for men or women, in any field at any time.
This book promotes self-pity and failure. A real recipe for failure for any young women buying this utter nonsense. This is not the middle ages, men do not lord power over women, in fact, men are part of the unprotected class which can be stereotyped and ridiculed with impunity.
As a female engineer I can tell you that my "way of knowing" is the same as anyone else's way of knowing. One reviewer here couldn't understand how people learn physics, that I suggest, is the result of her believing the type of nonsense pedaled by this author. People learn physics the same way people learn anything: step by step, with effort and self-discipline.
Please also note that 40 years after the resurgence of feminism in the United States women are still very much a minority in engineering although they are welcomed with open arms. In my freshman physics class, there were only 5 women among 70 students. Three of those women dropped out. You can't be an engineer if you drop out of first year physics. Modern feminism has encouraged women to blame others for their lack of success and to ask "society" to make them successes by fiat, as a result these women aren't ready for college level mathematics or physics. They are not prepared to put in the effort that it takes to succeed. They aren't ready for true leadership roles in any other field, either.
I hope no young women is influenced by this ridiculous, ludicrous and counter-productive mindset. If Western culture had been guided by this author's mindset, we never would have made it to the moon, found a cure for polio, or invented the internet. Sheesh
Women's Ways of Knowing: The Development of Self, Voice, and Mind.......2007-01-20
Both as a woman and as a graduate student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I found the book to be interesting and inspiring. I recognized many aspects of my own experience in the book and was interested in the unique experience that women have regarding knowledge.
Wonderful work!.......2007-01-03
This book took me several steps further than Carol Gilligan and other feminist writers. Great work!
knowing about knowing.......2006-03-03
this is by far the best book on epistemology -- how people decide what knowledge is, and how they go about getting it -- that i have ever encountered. when i was in graduate school, i started studying epistemology by accident. i'd planned to research how people learned physics, but i ended up baffled by many of my students. how *did* those people think?? this book clarified that for me, by extensively documenting a variety of ways in which people thought about knowledge, and presenting their classifications with excellent documentation and a wholesome level of respect.
don't be too torn up about the "women's" in the title -- that simply reflects the fact that the researchers chose to use women as the subjects of their study. the older (and in my opinion mostly poorer) literature on the subject used mainly men, and for that matter often only say harvard undergraduates, without comment on any biases thus introduced. but despite their selection of women only, belenky et. al. use a widely socially varied group of subjects, and thus their findings are quite broadly applicable. and at least they are careful to let the reader know who their subjects were -- an epistemological feature not to be lightly dismissed.
