Book Description
For health, for variety, for flavor, seafood is the choice for an ever-increasing number of Americans. And this book is the seafood-lover's bible, featuring over 250 innovative and exciting recipes from homey fried clams to Aromatic Portuguese Hake to Salmon with Roasted Tomatoes and Garlic Cream; instructions on checking for freshness; clearly illustrated directions for fundamentals such as cleaning, skinning, and filleting fish; and step-by-step explanations of basic cooking methods that any beginner can follow.
While writing the book, the author spent a lot of time with the people who make their livings from American waters, and her book is filled with their voices. With information, recipes, and thoughtful digressions about fish and the people who harvest them, plus a lexicon describing hundreds of species of edible sea creatures, The Great American Seafood Cookbook is a must for every seafood lover. Selection of the Better Homes & Gardens Family Book Service and Quality Paperback Book Club, and main selection of the Book-of-the-Month Homestyle Club. 130,000 copies in print.
Customer Reviews:
a bit disappointing.......2006-10-05
A meandering journey through the world of seafood and the American way. It's a decent book, and an addition to my kitchen bookshelf, but here's why the two-stars: the author has virtually nothing to say about sustainability and a fair number of the hard-working American fishermen she references use destructive methods like bottom-trawling, or things like seine nets that frequently trap marine turtles. The sections on preparing seafood seem rushed through and the author uses terms, utensils and techniques that are never defined - a real pain-in-the-arse for the novice seafood cook. As if this weren't enough, most of the recipes are portioned for serving 6-10 people, making it one of the last books on my list to whip out on a Tuesday evening for a quick dinner idea for the spouse-unit and myself.
Best recipes for Fish and Seafood.......2000-07-31
I love to cook! I always thought that fish prepared simply was best. This Loomis book really turned around my experience. She takes you on tour through areas where fish is caught and cooked. We get the recipes of fisherman (they know how to do this right) and also some incredible sauce recipes. I love Sauce Piquant with Redfish. Try it and see if you don't agree. I turn to this book so often for advice and recipes. It's a must have if you want to do Seafood right.

Crabmeat Stuffed Sole Fillets with Saffron Cream Sauce..........2005-01-26
... if that isn't enough to make a person want this cookbook I don't know what it would take. You say you want more? Okay, I was born and brought up looking out over the San Francisco Bay and I consider it most beautiful, but this book made me want to visit the Chesapeake Bay area and get to know its rich history and its evidently warm and hospitable people, profiled in brief well-written essays in each chapter. Good black and white photographs of people and places, a nicely drawn map at the front of the book, and recipes that speak of tradition and family in the best American way like Mrs. Tovey's Chicken and Waffles with Gravy, and Tangy Peach Short Ribs of Beef. I can't imagine anyone would be sorry to have this book, once they opened the covers and began to read.

Customer Reviews:
I LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2006-06-01
I am absolutely delighted with this book. If these authors want to write more books in this vein, I would want them all! I don't even have a baby to decorate a room for, but I was enthralled with it nevertheless. Charming decor and collecting ideas using all sorts of vintage things (which I love!). An absolute must-have for any mom who likes the vintage style, antiques, flea markets, etc. I agree it would make a terrific shower gift for a mom-to-be. It will give her plenty of ideas. And you know what? Even if she doesn't even like "old" stuff (or just doesn't know she does yet!), she may still get helpful ideas and/or may find it as delightful to look through as I did!
a great additin.......2005-08-06
this book is a great additin to a home decor library. I really enjoyed it, but I would have liked more information on sources and how thigs were made.
Flea Market Baby.......2004-07-25

I'm inspired!.......2004-04-26
I absolutely loved this book! A friend gave it to me for my baby shower. If you're like me and admire the vintage look, but never knew where to begin or what to look for--I think you'll find this book as helpful as I did. The authors give such creative and useful ideas! Instead of being intimidated, I am now inspired to go to the flea market and begin decorating the baby's room! The photos are beautifully done and the writing is fun and clever! It was a great gift! I can't wait to get started!
Everything Old is New Again.......2004-04-24
The authors show examples of their flea market finds and how they converted them into useful treasures. The photographs of their end-use conversions are beautifully illustrated along with charming descriptions of their origins. I found enough great ideas to fill our nursery many times over.

Very Helpful.......2000-04-19
A very good starter book on oil painting and techniques. I believe I have used some of the tips and strategies successfully. If your interested in painting, have this next to your canvas
This book is very thorough, and well illustrated........1999-11-08
This book is a very complete introduction to painting and the many various ways paint can be applied to a surface. The thing I liked best about this book is that it uses more then one artist to illustrate the different painting applications. I have had this book for years and it is my favorite reference book.
Book Description
An ideal introduction to all three skills for beginners and its comprehensive enough to include excerises and projects that will challenge a more experience artist.

Book Description
With its admirable purity of design and skillful crafting, Victorian Gothic took its cue from medieval ecclesiastical buildings in northern Europe. Through this highly illustrated source--with over 500 photographs, some from original catalogues and others specially commissioned--anyone can recreate the feel of a 19th century Gothic revival style home. From steeply pitched roofs topped by turrets, towers, and chimney-stacks to beautiful natural materials to intricate carvings, every detail will fascinate and inspire.

Victorian Gothic House Style.......2001-07-19
Linda Osband has done an admirable job of collecting images from England and the United States to help illustrated the Gothic Revival Movement. What she falls short on in text she makes up for in picture and engravings. It is not as comprehensive as I was hoping and there are some areas that I would have appreciated a more in-depth explanation: facades and furniture that identify the period being top of the list. The samples she has for gothic kitchens are modern but she supplements them with appliance advertisements from the 1870s-1890s. This helps identify what was used during this time, not necessarily practical now. She also incorporates the use of advertisements for tile samples and patterns that were available as well as ironwork. She covers all aspects of Gothic Revival from the outside to the interior to the furniture to the conservatory. Overall, there are some good ideas and good reading to be found if you are planning on restoring a residence or creating a period dollhouse. Highly recommend.

Book Description
A fine pictorial history of one of Britain's greatest remaining country houses.
Since its acquisition in 2002, Tyntesfield has become one of the crown jewels of the National Trust. Situated on a ridge overlooking the magnificent Land Yeo Valley, it is one of the last of the great country houses build in the Victorian High Gothic style. Today, it survives intact with visitors able to view its unrivalled collection of Victorian decorative arts as well as its sumptuously ornate private chapel.
Fertile Fortune offers readers a private tour of this magnificent house; as it does so, it traces the fascinating story of the Gibbs family and the fortune that allowed them to build and maintain Tyntesfield. Awash in beautiful images, this is a grand pictorial study of a Victorian treasure.

Product Description
This book explores the reception of the classical world in painting from the mid-Victorian period to the second decade of the twentieth century, by seeking: to identify and interpret the artists choices of ancient textual and archaeological source material; to investigate significant relationships between particular works and contemporary literature and society; and to situate Victorian classicism in the visual arts within the practices of Victorian painting and the classical tradition. The nineteenth century witnessed important developments and discoveries in classical scholarship and archaeology which, along with major shifts in general sensibility, inevitably affected both academic and popular perceptions of antiquity. Drawing on such perceptions, painters in Victorian Britain brought new approaches to the visualization of the ancient past. Today, popular notions of classical-subject painting envision escapist images of a dreamy and idyllic ancient world. The stereotype is not wholly without foundation, but it drastically misrepresents the sophistication of Victorian constructions of antiquity which, among much else, make clear distinctions between representations of Rome and Greece and are capable of a strikingly original, and often deeply ironic, use of themes, motifs and allusions. This reality illustrates that, although classicism impinged on Victorian culture in a way that is almost unimaginable today, many artists acquired an unexpectedly precise and sophisticated knowledge of ancient history, literature and archaeology.
