Book Description

It's hard to ignore someone with his hands in your mouth. Bernie Rhodenbarr's all ears when Dr. Sheldrake, his dentist, starts complaining about his detestable, soon-to-be-ex wife, and happens to mention the valuable diamonds she keeps lying around the apartment. Since Bernie's been known to supplement his income as a bookstore owner with the not-so-occasional bout of high-rise burglary, a couple of nights later he's in the Sheldrake apartment with larceny on his mind -- and has to duck into a closet when the lady of the house makes an unexpected entrance. Unfortunately he's still there when an unseen assailant does Mrs. Sheldrake in . . . and then vanishes with the jewels.

Bernie's got to come out of the closet some time. But when he does, he'll be facing a rap for a murder he didn't commit -- and for a burglary he certainly attempted -- unless he can hunt down the killer who left him hanging.

4 out of 5 stars A good quick read.......2006-07-02

A very light whodunnit. Witty, charming and laugh out loud funny.

4 out of 5 stars Follow-up in the series improves on the concept.......2005-12-21

I read this book before I read the first one in the series. It didn't matter much but it does reveal some plot points from the first book and if you want to go into the series blind, I recommend starting with the first, Burglars Can't Be Choosers.

I felt the cement around our favorite thief, Bernie Rhodenbarr, starts to firm up with this book. The character is still being fleshed out and Lawrence Block can take him in a lot of directions from here, if he wants, but an established personality is developing nicely.

The setup and mystery of this book are similar to the first but different enough that you don't feel like you are just reading a rehash. Block can't keep going on this tack without seeming redundant but for now it is fine. And I guess the main reason it works is that the motivation to solve the mystery and the development of the mystery is different in each book.

I'm interested in what happens to Bernie next. I will check out the third book to see where Block leads Bernie and the readers and then I'll decide if it is still worth following. For the moment, I'm willing to join in.

4 out of 5 stars Meet Bernie Rhodenbarr.......2004-10-11

This was the one that started it all - this series is outstanding.

Lawrence Block must have needed an outlet for his vast knowledge of the whole detective fiction genre. He has used this character, a New York burglar, as the means to roam over the whole territory of mystery fiction, from the "murder in a teacup" school of Agatha Chrstie, to hard-boiled detectives noir, through the "To Catch a Thief" cat-burglar dimension.

Bernie, for his part, is quite unassuming. He's a guy who is just trying to make a living. In fact, in a way he would tell you he's cursed with a compulsion to earn his living by breaking into other people's living spaces and stealing their stuff. It is the act itself that excites him, unfortunately.

If he ever took therapy, like his soulmate John Keller, goodness knows what would come out of it. What sort of analytic theory explains the thrill of a man deftly, gently nudging, poking, and twisting picks in a lock until, with the slightest movement, suddenly the lock yields to his gentle but insistent touch?

Beats the hell out of me.

Bernie's just a regular guy, and he gets sidetracked from his work by once in a while by homicides right in front of him, by his love/hate relationship with a parasitic and corrupt NYPD officer, and but his social obligations to his gay best friend. Their relationship alone sparkles and is well worth the price of admission.

I want to thank my sister for introducing me to Bernie, and for being patient with me while I adopted him slowly.

The richness of this writing is what puts Lawrence Block at the top of the game today. You'll enjoy this - guaranteed.

4 out of 5 stars Lawrence, Meet ... Lawrence.......2004-07-15

If you miss Lawrence Saunders, then meet Lawrence Block. His series reminds me a lot of Saunders' Archy McNally, except that Bernie's on the other side of the law!! But the gist is the same, bachelor, swinger, funny, and always entertaining. In this installment, he steals jewels, which are stolen from him, doesn't kill someone the police think he killed and sleeps with a girlfriend that ain't his. But he puts everything (well, almost everything) back into balance by the end of the story, though he doesn't get the jewels or the girl. A good read, and an entertaining plot that doesn't give itself away until the very end, it will make you want to get the rest of Block's series. Easy going fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Burglary Isn't All It's Cracked Up to Be!.......2003-05-04

Lawrence Block is one of our most talented mystery authors. In the Bernie Rhodenbarr series he explores out an ordinary, but intelligent, "honest" person might go about pursuing a life of crime as a fastidious and talented burglar who isn't proud of what he does, doesn't like to hang out with criminals, and really gets a big thrill out of breaking and entering . . . and removing valuables. As you can see, there's a sitcom set-up to provide lots of humor. But the humor works well in part because Mr. Block is able to put the reader in the Bernie's shoes while he breaks, enters and steals . . . and evades the long arm of the law. To balance the "honest" burglar is an array of "dishonest" and equally easy-money loving cops. As a result, you're in a funny moral never-never land while your stomach tightens and your arm muscles twitch as tension builds. To make matters even more topsy-turvy, Bernie at some point in every story turns into an investigator who must figure out "who-dun-it" for some crime that he personally didn't do. It's almost like one of those "mystery at home" games where the victim comes back as the police investigator, playing two roles. Very nice!

So much for explaining the concept of the series. The Burglar in the Closet is the second book in the series. I strongly suggest that you begin the series by reading Burglars Can't Be Choosers. Each story in the series adds information and characters in a way that will reduce your pleasure of the others if read out of order. Although, I originally read them out of order and liked them well enough. I'm rereading them now in order, and like it much better this way. The Burglar Who Liked to Quote Kipling comes next in the series.

As Stephen King likes to point out, a great way to start a book is to put a character in an unusual situation and then let things happen from there. The Burglar in the Closet certainly follows that route in a successful manner with what reads and feels like a very realistic (and hilarious to think about) burglary experience.

The complications soon start coming from all directions like sharpened spears, and Bernie's ducking before one of them hits him! Along the way you'll meet The World's Greatest Dentist and his hygienist, some remarkably vivid barflies, and visit again with the brilliant, but bent cop, Ray Kirschmann from Burglars Can't Be Choosers. Bernie gets accused of just about everything but what he actually did, and as before, straightens matters out through his own investigation.

I thought that the identity of the more serious criminal was pretty obvious, but the plot develops in such a witty, charming way that I didn't really mind. The plot is pretty complicated, and will keeep you on your toes . . . so pay attention!

This book is definitely a step up from Burglars Can't Be Choosers and really establishes the series as a solid one for fans of off-beat mysteries.

As I read this book, I was reminded of Murphy's Law (anything that can go wrong, will). Most of the unpleasant situations in our lives come about because we ignore Mr. Murphy. This book will certainly remind you to think through what could go wrong . . . before you go ahead.

Volume III Book of the GodsA Splendid New Fantasy by the Author of Ariadne's WebFred Saberhagen, New York Times bestselling author of the Berzerker Series, continues to puts his own twist on Greek mythology, continuing the series that kicked off with The Face of Apollo and Ariadne's Web with Book III, The Arms of Hercules.Hercules is the son of the nearly omnipotent Zeus, King of the Gods, and of a human mother whose beauty sparked lust in the great god. The arms of Hercules look no more muscular than those of many other men-but his father was the greatest god in the entire world. Hercules, the son of Zeus, has crushed monsters, giants and legendary warriors in combat.Until one challenge remains: The harrowing underworld, the one place where strength does not matter. Pitted against the greatest monsters that classical literature and Saberhagen's vivid imagination could create, Hercules's struggle comes to life in his fight to the death, against Death itself.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant if not captivating addition to the series.......2005-12-09

Saberhagen continues his saga of gods from Greek/Roman mythology with this volume written from the first-person perspective of Hercules.

Saberhagen does a nice job of tying together the legend of Hercules with his own story line, although this volume is a little bland compared to the last two, with things going a little too easily, too simply. Hercules character development is a little stilted, and somebody missing from the first two volumes makes an appearance. But Saberhagen's narrative style is quite enjoyable, and I sped through this volume. Recommended if you enjoyed the earlier books, but not a good place to start the series.

5 out of 5 stars The adventures of Hercules.......2005-11-20

"Arms of Hercules" is the third book in Fred Saberhagan's "Book of the Gods" series; but it is the first one I have read. The book concerns the adventures of young Hercules (who it seems has the physical apperance of Kevin Sorbo; coincidence? Maybe not.) as he travels the known world on a variety of quests at the behest of many gods, mainly Hermes and Apollo. The ultimate goal is to speak to his father, Zeus. But his father wants Hercules' help in fighting a war against the Giants, who posses a weapon that the gods can not even stand againt.

I really enjoyed the book, even though it is the third in a series it is not hard at all to pick up. All the missing pieces are connected for you. The action was fast paced and exciting, and the characters were mostly warm and easy to like; even Death. I also liked that the book was in the first person of Hercules himself, and he sets the record straight on many of the myths and legends surrounding him, including the wrath of Hera, his stay with the Amazons, the real reason he left the Argos expidition, and especially the 12 Labors (the truth behind the stable cleaning incident was especially entertaining). If there was one weak point, it was the Enkidu. He is Hercules's annoying little nephew. But he was gone before he could do any permanant damage. A great book, and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

      4 out of 5 stars a delightful journey .......2005-01-31

I've enjoyed reading Fred Saberhagen's novels for almost twenty years now. He is very talented, having the ability to breathe life into the worlds which he creates, worlds which become, for all intents and purposes, real, and which many of us would love to live in, no matter the dangers to be found there. Fred's stories always have so much depth to them that they are a delight to read - they are so vivid that they allow you to feel as if you are right there watching the events unfold before your eyes. His new series, Book of the Gods, is highly imaginative and thought-provoking.

The Arms of Hercules is the third novel in this Book of the Gods series, and it differs slightly from the previous two, in that it is more of a first person narrative. Much to the amusement of my editor and friends, I have had a little difficulty with this review. As I read the book, it seemed that the voice which was relating the tales of this incredibly strong son of Zeus was actually that of Kevin Sorbo. Okay, maybe I do watch too much television, or perhaps it is just that there was so much hype surrounding Hercules and Xena. Either way, this is the voice which told the tale.

Fred's Hercules is very different from the character Kevin Sorbo portrayed. This Hercules is younger, and of a much more average build. He is nothing more than a teen when he is sent with his cousin to herd sheep, and his adventures begin. Being the son of an almost completely omnipotent father and a human mother has got to play havoc with one's body and mind, but Hercules seems to deal with it better than most human boys would. He is logical and tries to reason out his emotions where his lineage is concerned, and does quite well.

As is to be expected when there is any tale concerning the legendary Hercules, there are a number of monsters and giants, and other sundry opponents which he must face. Killing is not something which Hercules really enjoys, though, and he would also prefer to remain cloaked in anonymity while his cousin basks in the glory.

This is a subject which has, in my mind, been done to death. However, Fred manages to breathe just enough new life into it that I wasn't bored. I knew what was to come to a certain extent, but there were a few changes of drastic import which added to the adventure. And of course the "god faces," translucent half-masks which imbue the human avatar with that particular god's attributes, are very prominent.

Hercules is mortal, and has no need of one of the "god faces;" however, there is now talk between Daedalus and Haphaestus of attempting to make one. During the course of this story Hercules is brought together with his father, Zeus, and the rest of the immortals as they battle for their very existence against an ancient foe. Not exactly the reason for father-son time that Hercules had desired, but he will still take what time he can get.

I recommend reading this novel, as well as the previous two, The Face of Apollo and Ariadne's Web. It is a delightful journey through classic literature made even more interesting by Fred's prodigious imagination and writing skills.

As an avid reader of the genre fantasy, i have come upon the books of Fred Saberhagen. I have read some other books by him like the "Lost Swords" books and "Merlin's Bones". Having read books 1 and 2 of "The book of the Goods" Book three is another interesting and exciting episode in this solid series by Saberhagen.

Step Two includes Dr. Day's Ageless Skin Inner Makeover because beauty is so much more than skin-deep. Here, she lays out her plan for releasing negative emotions and utilizing relaxation techniques in order to eliminate stress's harmful effects on the skin.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Forget this book.......2006-11-10

Although Dr. Day is a dermatologist, I must say the information in her book was mundane and certainly not very new information. What was informative was her section on rejuvenation techniques that are presently available. Her focus on attitude, diet, makeup, and style brought nothing new to the table. Her section on hair loss was inadequate. This information should have been a 25 page pamphlet but certainly not a book. I will commend her for not hawking her skin care line too heavily like others have done (does Perricone ring a bell?). Just not very revolutionary.

5 out of 5 stars Subtract Years From Your Appearance..........2005-11-03

"Subtract Years From Your Appearance Change Your Life," proclaims the author of the book 'Forget the Facelift.'

The title and back cover caption could not be more appropriate. The promise delivers, if you follow the program detailed in this book.

Firstly, Dr. Doris J. Day is one of the few doctors around that is in the medical field for the right reasons. I am fortunate enough to reside in New York City and be a patient in her private practice.

Secondly, Dr. Day believes in good health; physical health being equally important to emotional health--the introduction is entitled, "Beauty isn't only skin-deep." She discusses how the stresses of modern life can substantially take it's toll on one's skin. Sample menus, recipes-for meals and additionally for do-it-yourself skin treatments, facial exercises, fashion tips, and obviously a specific skin regimen and education targeting skin saboteurs are all included in this book!

Thirdly, I don't know too many dermatologists and/or plastic surgeons that don't "over prescribe." Dr. Day is rather conservative, insomuch that she would suggest surgery as an exception rather than the rule, potentially not even as an alternative treatment because it is not necessary.

Good skin does not need to be costly, or overly time consuming. Coincidentally, or rather brilliantly, Dr. Day also has created a skincare line simply called 'Good Skin.' Clean, easy, simple skincare.

Having radiant, glowing skin needn't be complicated, and 'Forget the Facelift' is a testament to that statement.

4 out of 5 stars should be on your bookshelf.......2005-10-23

This is a book I'll keep referring back to. Lots of insider info and invaluable insight into how youe diet affects skin aging.

      5 out of 5 stars I loved this book.......2005-09-08

Dr. Doris Day promised a younger me in 2 weeks with just simple lifestyle changes. Until I saw the results first hand, I doubted the possibility, as anyone would. I was surprised to find that these changes were not painful resolutions or deprivation; they felt more like self indulgences.

In her refreshingly smart and insightful book, Forget the Facelift , Dr. Day helps us confront the fact that dealing with life's stress is not easy but basically unavoidable in today's world. She explains how physically and emotionally there are saboteurs at every turn and navigating them is easier with a little professional medical advice as well as some sound ideas on treating yourself better. She gives us examples of how she has helped many of her own patients look years younger even before they had any treatment in her office.

But don't be fooled by the spiritual side of this brilliant doctor; her book is filled with medical and technical answers to questions we all have, written in a way that we can understand and use to our benefit. Understanding the physiology of skin really increases awareness of what damages us and what helps us glow. She lists ingredients to look for in beauty products when faced with the confusing array of choices. In addition, she includes what can cause problems and what her favorites are. She names names - there's no hiding from Dr. Day.

She also provides time saving skin care routines, quick ways to eat healthy meals, an explanation of ingredients, vitamins and supplements allowing you to figure things out on your own. These are all ways Dr. Day helps you become educated in looking great.

And finally, if all of her `pearls of wisdom' leave you still wanting more youth, she gives straight forward information on some basic skin enhancing procedures and treatments such as peels, botox, fillers, laser treatments, the thread lift and other new and non invasive (doable at lunchtime) procedures that you might want to consider.

Dr. Day has packed a great deal of valuable information in to a quick read. Take my word for it, it is well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the facelift and change your life for the better!.......2005-09-07

Dr. Day's book can best be described as inspiring. It not only does justice to your skin (yes, it really will look that much better if you follow her recommendations), but it is guaranteed to also change your life for the better. Her three 'R's (read the book), nutritional and facial product recommendations, as well as so many other valuable pearls, made a huge difference in the appearance of my skin in just two weeks, not to mention creating a happier medium for myself. This book is highly recommended, and is one of the best on the market that I've read for benefiting one's overall health, with results of looking like way more than a million bucks!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Cookbook.......2007-05-13

This cookbook is great. Its an ideal starting point for cooking for your baby. I really liked learning about using soy to help your baby get protein so you dont need to rely on meats. Soy is such a great and easy as well as cost effective protein source. I would esp recommend this book if the baby is vegetarian or has a restrictive diet.

5 out of 5 stars Not a bland baby book.......2006-12-28

I found this book to be very informative and containing all of the information I was looking for. I don't want to only feed my baby rice cereal and single ingredient fruits and vegetables for the 6th - 12th months. This book gives quite a variety of ideas for blending grains, beans, fruit, vegetables, pastas and yes - meats as well as tofu type options. I was thrilled to find recipes for teething biscuits and graham crackers. I made one of the recipes for blended cereal with beans, brown rice, sesame seeds, and few other things. After I cooked it I had to leave, so I stuck it in the fridge. When I came home it had really thickened up, much like slow cook oatmeal does after it sits. Instead of thinning it with more water, I rolled bits of it into pea-sized balls and gave those to my son as finger food. He ate them right up! I didn't have to sweeten it or blend with fruit or anything.

The recipes are not broken down by age, but by meal category instead. The appropriate ages are listed very clearly at the bottom of each recipe. Some reviewers complain that there are few recipes for 6-8 months old. Shouldn't you be going through new foods one at a time during those two months to determine food sensitivities anyway? Eggs are an ingredient in some of the bread recipes. Citrus, milk, and honey are also ingredients for 10 months and up, but since they are cooked in the recipe, they hold no health threat like the raw forms do. Besides, it's recomended that milk not be given as a beverage for children under 1 year because of the propensity for children to choose the cow's milk over breast milk or formula and thus not getting the proper nutrition out of it. Eggs are cautioned against because of the allergenic properties in the whites, not the yolk. So use you own judgement with those recipes. Finally, yes, some of the recipes call for butter and spices, but don't most parents start giving their children food off their own plate containing these itmes as their children's teeth start coming in?

This book really is a great resource for those who desire to give their children the best food they possibly can without the boredom and unhealthy additives that most pre-packaged baby foods contain. Perhaps some of those who gave negative reviews need to start using some common sense and think for themselves for a change.

2 out of 5 stars Not a book for beginning foods.......2006-06-12

This book is divided into breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack etc sections. Throughout the sections are ideas for babies 8 months and up and 10 months and up. Very few recipes are for babies 6-8 months. Flipping through the book to find age appropriate recipes is very frustrating since they are divided by meals instead of age. The book also introduces foods for babies 8-12 months that my pediatrician recommended waiting to introduce until after the first year. The book includes recipes for citrus fruits and eggs. The authors include soy and tofu recipes rather than many meat recipes. So for those planning to introduce their baby to meats around 9 months or older, this is not the book for you. I found some of the recipes overly simple--ones that I could have thought up myself-such as apples and apricots (simply steaming and then blending the two fruits). Other recipes seemed to complicated and two advanced for the age group recommended such as the wild mushroom soup made with onion and olive oil--for ages 8 months and up. This book does have some fun recipe ideas but many of them can be made if you are simply creative in trying fruit, veggie, and meat blends.

1 out of 5 stars Not What I Wanted At All.......2006-02-23

I bought this book based on others' reviews and because I wanted to make healthy food for my 6 month old. Right off, I realized this isn't the book I wanted. They only have about 2 maybe 3 recipes for 6 months olds, so this book is better for older babies and toddlers. The authors talk about introducing egg yolk at 7 months. My pediatrician told us to wait until a year old for eggs. Also, they have recipes for citrus fruit for 8 months, which we were also told to wait until a year. The authors talk about a vegan lifestyle and how to get your baby started on that. My husband and I are not vegetarian, so if your like us, I would not recommend this book. If you are, maybe you would like it. They also talk about soy and tofu, which I don't plan on giving my baby.

Bottom line, I really didn't like this book. I would highly recommend Blender Baby Food (see review).

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for your little munchkin.......2006-02-08

I could not have been more pleased with this book. It has tons of great ideas for all ranges of babies. The author clearly states which month you could start feeding each dish - many other baby cookbooks just say 6-12 months. Obviously, what a 12 month old eats is different than what a 6 month old does.

Other reviewers who have said it has questionable ingredients didn't read it carefully. Some recipes call for milk - the author says to put in formula or breastmilk until a year of age and then add cows milk. And yes, there are some recipes that have sugar - but in minute amounts. For example, there is a fruit muffin that has 1/4 cup of sugar...and that makes 12 muffins. Have you ever checked the ingredients on the back of a jar of food? They have sugar! And other things like onion powder (Gerber creamed spinach), or even cinnamon(zwieback)! And if you wanted, you can always leave this things out and still have a great dish.

The book is divided into breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and also has a sections on soups and snacks. I found this great cause I was always giving my son the same foods. It also gave me great ideas on how to mix things together. Unlike other books it didn't call for strange fruits and vegetables, but it does provide some ingredients you might not have used otherwise, like mango, millet, barley and every kind of bean you can imagine! And they tell you how to cook all the grains that it calls for.

I will say the author does not go into details on how to prepare single ingredient baby foods, but that is pretty much just steaming and pureeing, so it was not a problem for me.

So far my son has LOVED every single item I have made, and I can't wait to make some more. If you are looking for some yummy and interesting baby cuisine that is also EASY to read, then this is the book for you!
