Customer Reviews:
Smug, unpleasant lead character.......2005-04-12
I could not finish this book. The lead character, Dorothy Martin was so unpleasant. Did not like her condescending amusement at other characters personalities and tastes. Author tries to impress upon us Dorothy's worthy character by showing how well-liked she is by other characters - doesn't work for me. I wonder; how can they stand her?
Cozy Up For This Fun Debut.......2003-02-26
It's Christmas Eve in the small town of Sherebury. Dorothy Martin, a recently widowed American, is looking forward to her first Christmas as a resident of England. But when leaving the cathedral's midnight mass, she literally stumbles over a body. Soon the questions are flying. Who killed Canon Billings? Since the list of suspects includes most of the town, more importantly why? Dorothy has her hands full trying to figure this one out.
I was drawn in by the charm of this book. It starts out rather quickly and the pace never lags until the gripping conclusion. Dorothy is an interesting main character. I felt her interest in the murder was a little under explained, but I was willing to let that go. I really enjoyed the writing style. The first person narration felt like a letter to a friend and the scenes where Dorothy argued with her self were funny because they were so true.
Having already discovered this author's other series, I now look forward to reading more in this one as well. She is a truly talented mystery author.
Solid cozy.......2002-07-23
Dorothy Martin and her husband had planned to move to England when they retired. When he died she decided to go ahead with their plan. She moves to Sherebury England where she starts to put the pieces of her life back together. Because this is a murder mystery she promptly stumbles over the body of Jonathan Billings. To the dismay of her new friend, Chief Constable Alan Nesbitt, she starts to investigate and as she gets closer to the solution the danger increases. A charming cozy with a main character whose affinity for hats rivals Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax.
American homage to Christie, Pym and the like.......2001-06-19
The British cozy mystery is practically an institution so it's fun when a book comes along that respects that tradition while giving it a different twist. In this case, an American protagonist, Dorothy Martin, guides us through British village life, high church nuances and murder.
This book has all of the things I want in a four star rated book. The writing is always competent and sometimes quite witty. The plot moved along with only one or two annoying digressions into tourist information. And, most important, I like Dorothy. Maybe it because I've recently helped my own mother cope with widowhood but Dams has created a character who ran both true and likeable. Of course, the hint of an upcoming romance with the widowed chief constable will have me back for more soon.
The mystery itself is solid. There are plenty of suspects with reason to kill the victim. Was it church politics? Was it a matter of musical taste? Was it an agrieved employee? Was it a jealous scholar?
I've held back a fifth star for a couple of reasons. While I throughly enjoyed the book it isn't so outstanding that I'll be recommending to friends (yet). Also, as a non-Christian, I felt Dams was a bit heavy handed with the religious angle (even if the victim was a Canon).
Delightful? Hardly!!.......2001-04-21
This book is very hard to follow unless you are of the Catholic religion and know what all the technical terms mean. The author fails to make the fictional town of Sheresbury or it's inhabitants in any way appealing. And the author never makes quite clear why a widow of comfortable means would leave a perfectly lovely life in America for a cold, foggy, damp, cramped subsistance of a life in an unheated, unpleasant, unwelcoming house in England. If it's for the ambience, the author fails to provide any that make this setting attractive. The concept is good, the writing bad.
Book Description
Designing Disney sets into history and puts into context the extraordinary contributions of John Hench, who, at the age of 94, still comes into his office at Imagineering each day. His principles of theme park design, character design, and use of color have made him a legendary figure, not only for Disney fans but also for students and aficionados of architecture, engineering, and design. Designing Disney reveals the magic behind John's great discoveries and documents his groundbreaking work in several key areas, including the values, attitudes, aesthetics, and logic that went into the original design concepts for Disney theme parks. Hench details the essence and various meanings of colors and how they work in the parks, and lets the reader in on the how and why of the Disney characters' inherent popularity-their timeless human traits, archetypal shapes and gestures that suggest their qualities graphically, and their emotional resonance in our lives.

Pretty Good!.......2007-08-23
I do like this book, but it doesn't have the great pictures that the other Imagineering book does. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Imagineers. It has a lot of text, which will help you understand many aspects of what it means to be an Imagineer. I would recommend getting the other one first, and this one second if you are still interested. They are both great.
Designing Disney: Imagineering and the Art of the Show.......2007-04-30
not exactly what I expected. I was hoping for a more historical perspective, but overall a good book.
superb explanation of how the Imagineers operate.......2007-03-10
This is a fascinating look into the mind of the premier Disney designers. Hench explains how every single detail of the Disney parks is designed to fit into a great whole: color, form, space, and even time must reinforce a narrative theme in every single ride or experience, as if the viewer had entered a film sequence. All detail is foreseen - with storyboards! - discussed, and built with this kind of total consistency of experience in mind. I was astounded that the parts were so much more deeply planned than I had imagined.
I read this as part of my research for a writing project on Disney. For this, it was extremely useful and informative. It strikes me that the imagineering method is of great relevance to all managers.
While easy to read quickly, this book will give anyone who likes Disney a fascinating new perspective on one of the great American success stories. Warmly recommended. The writing is clear and to the point, while elegant.
So you want to see how to make sausages..........2005-07-07
For most Disneyland guests, the nuts-and-bolts details behind the many attractions will ruin their illusions. Most people who are shown the tricks behind stage magic cannot get over feeling cheated. If you had to watch the process of making sausages from birth of the meat animal (pig or whatever) to the grilling of your breakfast in the restaurant kitchen, odds are that you'd enjoy your oatmeal instead.
But I enjoy seeing projects grow from project to fruition. John Hench's "Designing Disney: Imagineering and the Art of the Show" in an insiders peek at the Disney theme parks and cruise line. Concept art is directed at a specific audience. Usually the task for concept art is to sell the idea to the "suits"--who are a very different audience than Disneyland guests. It's been said that executives consider everyone else subhuman--especially their customers and subordinate employees--so what "sells" a concept to a panel of executives will leave the end customer unimpressed. Once the project gets the go-ahead, changes will happen. "No plan survives contact with reality!" At Disneyland, "finished attractions" will continually be changed due to economics or guest feedback until the attraction is replaced. The Disneyland Monorail is a fine example of this. On pages 26 and 27 and on page 33 monorail concept art differs significantly from today's Disneyland Monorail. John Hench wrote about how this occurred.
Many ideas don't make it to the concept stage. Disenyland was very much the experimental community during the 1950's and 1960's. The Enchanted Tiki Room was originally conceived of as a dinner show. Around 1960, the South Pacific was considered romantic and adventurous. Today, the Enchanted Tiki Room is considered ho-hum boring by most--but just try to rid Disneyland of it! My visits to Disneyland are incomplete if I cannot see the Tiki Birds at least once!
Hench wrote about the central theme of the park attractions, how "show" was the focus. Some of the rides and attractions at Disneyland (Disney's California Adventure is a worse offender) are just rides or exhibits. They have little if any tie-in, no synergy, with the rest of the park. Walt Disney told stories with his park attractions. The "nuts and bolts" of telling stories with a walk-in theater and live actors is explained in simple terms. No math! Imagine equations for the curve radii and bank on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! Color, character, form, space, and time are some of the elements used to tell the story.
I like the panaramic photos of Main Street, Disneyland on pages 68 through 71. Disney theme parks keep changing. I like to see how the park has changed over time. Hench explained why these changes occured.
This book is a nice addition to my Disney library.
Nice behind the scenes look........2005-04-08
After a recent trip to Disney World, I became captivated by all that went on there and immediately went online to find any behind the scenes books that might be lingering about. Designing Disney was a great read from cover to cover. Written by John Hench, possibly the longest serving Imagineer, you're given insight into some of the things that went into creating the enchanting parks that we all know and love.
Particularly interesting, I thought, were some of the techniques that the Imagineering group developed along the way, and some ingenious tricks that were used from the need for creative solutions.
This book is great for Disney fanatics, but even if you're not all that enthused about the parks, this book should keep anyone that's interested in the process of creation entertained until the very end.

Book Description
This book and collection of illustrated CD lectures summarizes how maintaining quality of life in an aging population is being achieved by the development of specialty biomaterials, devices, artificial organs, and in vitro growth of human cells as tissue engineered constructs. Following an introduction to living and man-made materials, the text discusses clinical applications of biomaterials and devices, summarizes the bioengineering principles and materials used in artificial organs, and presents the concepts and applications of tissue engineering. It concludes with the complex socio-economic factors involved in technology-based healthcare. Each chapter is supplemented with illustrated PowerPoint lectures and study questions on a CD.

The best book I have read on the subject.......2007-02-24
If you want to know about biomaterials, artificial organs and tissue engineering, then this is the book for you. One is always hopeful that a new book will shed some new light in this area, but this was the best book I've ever read. On this subject.
It's not really aimed at the casual reader though, as a certain amount of prior knowledge is assumed.
In my opinion the co-authors, Hench and Jones, complement each other in their writing style. This is definitely a promising first book for Jones, and I look forward to reading more from him as his writing style develops further.
If this is a subject that interests you then you should definitely save up, or sell your house, or a kidney, and buy this book.

Don't let the page count fool you!.......2007-06-07
For 80 pages, this book tells a great story. Mike, the protagonist, is your average blue-collar guy, that finds himself involved in the professional henching industry. It's basically a good look into the personal life of a henchman. The art isn't blockbuster, but works great with the script, and it's very easy to identify with the main character. Overall, a 4.5, and a great read.

Customer Reviews:
Great "first" book to read........2007-08-23
Gave me really good information. I was pretty clueless when I picked up this book. Explained everything to me in simple terms. Loved that it has a glossary in the back to reference. Wouldn't read this if I was already familiar with the process though.
Good general process description but forgets to mention the exceptions.......2007-01-07
Liza does a good job walking you through the process but she fails to mention that not everyone feels/ reacts the same for each step. I found the HSG test to be extremely painful and had a horrible reaction to the progestrone shots. I wish everyone the best of luck with IVF and just remember everyone's body is different.
The BEST book for beginning IVFers!! :).......2006-09-05
I wish I would of found this book first! It's an easy read with so much valuable information. It covers everything from IVF lingo to sample cycles AND gives great commentary from women and men who have survived & succeeded with IVF. I couldn't put it down & constantly found myself sharing interesting info from the book with my husband. You won't be disappointed with this one!!!
Best of luck to you!
Good Info, But Trite and Patronising.......2006-05-02
The book is filled with good definitions about the winding road that is IVF-fertility treatment is packed with acronyms, abbreviations, and science, and the author does do a good job of explaining what all of the acronyms and abbreviations are. The book flows well and has wit, but the constant underlying message is one of success! IVF succeeds! Just keep your legs in the air/take to bed rest/keep thinking smiley happy positive thoughts and it always works! As someone who's been through a few rounds of IVF and ongoing still, it's not that easy for most people. IVF is hard enough without infusing constant messages of false hope-I feel the author is irresponsible in suggesting that IVF can be otherwise.
Wonderful book! A Must-Have for IVFers!.......2006-01-09
I am the kind of person who researches and reads EVERYTHING when they are faced with an issue or problem. Needless to say, I have purchased a multitude of IVF books, and this one is one of my favorites. It goes through the IVF process step-by-step, shares sample protocols, and explains ALL the medicines. In fact, I found myself going back and re-reading several parts of the book while in the midst of the IVF process. It's simply a must-have!

Customer Reviews:
A compilation of other cookbooks.......2007-06-07
I have very mixed feelings about this cookbook.
I gather from the introduction that this is one of a series based on visiting different states and putting together a cookbook to "preserve their food heritage". How the authors plan on summarizing the entire culinary experience of a state with such an interesting history, mix of races, and emphasis on FOOD is answered by what you get: a compilation of other cookbooks. So on the plus side, many of their sources are really good. (The entire Honpa Hongwanji series are great and are in my mother's, grandmother's, aunt's, etc collection. They're sort of dated, but have a lot of classic everyday food.) On the negative side taking a few recipes from other recipe collections gives you very little coherence, understanding of where that recipe came from (time period or heritage), or understanding of the ingredients. Plus, the selection of these recipes are just sort of strange. Spicy Garlic Eggplant and Pork (pg 128) and Spicy Szechuan Eggplant (pg 100) are basically the same recipe with minor changes from 2 different cook books. Several recipes are for poke, but the authors don't seem to realize they're related, or, at least, don't explain what it is. I have to wonder if they actually cooked these recipes at all or just leafed through the other books.
Pictures are chosen to be more atmospheric with tourist photos of the authors, scenic places, and some line drawings (not of the food). The photos of people in "native garb" (at tourist sites) also contrast with the recipes, which are largely modern pot luck sort of food. (In particular, there's a cringe-worthy vintage photo near the front that must be just for nostalgia's sake because no one I know in Hawaii would be caught dead looking like that.)
Besides the food, there are also little tidbits of information peppered through the book that are supposed to give you an idea of island life. My question: Who exactly told the authors that curry is often served at parties? What a strange generalization. They also commit the faux-pas in the preface of calling their friend a second generation Hawaiian. Hawaiians are like American Indians; you can't call yourself one just because you've moved somewhere.
So, there are definitely some good recipes in here. It's just that you stumble upon things that are just plain wierd if you're from Hawaii.
Not something you would use in a big party.......2007-05-29
The receipe directions are vague. It's a good book, but just not a party book.
off the hook recipes if you like island cooking.......2007-03-09
I was complete taken back by the yummy recipes from the islands
