Book Description
Reporting on the politics and plotting of the royal court for an ambitious bishop, Dame Frevisse is instead drawn into a dangerous maelstrom encircling the throne of England.
The pity is that desperate acts of loyalty and love are not always enough to save men from murder-and an innocent man from the gallows.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting new direction.......2004-06-23
I've read almost all of the Dame Frevisse books by Margaret Frazer. They began as simple historical mysteries but have really moved into a different genre. The first few books were actually written by two people, one with the head for mysteries and the other with a passion for life in 14th Century Britain. The first author has dropped out of the equation and the novels are now entirely penned by Gail Frazer, the history buff, and it's definitely beginning to show. Freed from having to essentially write the books by committee, she really seems to have taken the project to heart and for the last few books, has been moving away from the traditional framework of a simple whodunit to concentrate on her real area of interest: the intrigues and machinations surrounding the court of Henry VI.
In the Bastard's Tale she makes the break complete, most noticably with the total absence of a true murder in the traditional narrative sense. It is still a puzzling and exciting read with a wealth of stunning historical detail, but unfortunately Dame Frevisse's reasons for being in such exhalted company in the first place are starting to wear a little thin. Nonetheless her character remains as uncompromising and stoically endearing as ever, and the astute reader will enjoy continuing the series simply for the joy of watching Gail Frazer evolve from her artistic infancy as a ghostwriter of pulp mysteries to an impressive novelist in her own right.
A historical novel, not a mystery novel........2004-05-05
This is very much a historical novel, as there really is no murder and murderer to be found. I found that the book had somewhat of a slow start, but most historical novels suffer from this problem since the author needs to build his/her character base and lay the groundwork for the unfolding of the story. In this book Dame Frevisse and Dame Pepetua are sent to a meeting of parliament as a request of the Bishop. He wants Dame Frevisse to listen and learn about the many political intrigues that are going on in this emergency scheduled calling of parliament. Right away Dame Frevisse is in the middle of all the political unrests, secrets and plots and counterplots that surround King Henry VI and his uncle the Duke of Gloucester. She finds that her brother-in-law, the Duke of Suffolk is in the middle of this, and is in fact the cause of the problems, so she must deal with her sister's concerns about her husband as well as try to thwart a truly evil plot that Suffolk has hatched. This will become the biggest challenge of her career, and will in fact destroy her reputation (a thing that a nun does not take lightly). Ms. Frazer is a very good writer, and this book is well-researched, but it was not what I was expecting since I wanted a medieval mystery. I personally didn't really enjoy the story as I've read many historical mysteries about this time, and really wasn't wanting to read another about the maelstrom that surrounds an early English king's throne, but I've given it 4 stars since it is so well-written, and well-researched. Be aware if you read it that this is not a mystery novel.
A page-turner ending.......2004-01-23
I've read and liked all of Margaret Frazier's books, but this one is special. I'm not going to discuss the plot except to say that the last few chapters kept me reading into the night; one in particular I read over and over, heart in mouth. This outstanding book is reminiscent of Edith Pargeter's (AKA Ellis Peters, of Brother Cadfael fame) series The Heaven Tree, the Green Branch, and The Scarlet Seed--and higher praise I cannot give.
Very believable dialogue, for one thing..........2003-09-27
... and precise description of the social mores of the time. I am always pleasantly taken with how Frazer manages to make Dame Frevisse seem so absolutely true-to-form. I did not find it slow-paced, but then, I grab every new Frazer as soon as I can, and have yet to be disappointed.
Well-plotted tale.......2003-02-13
This is one of Margaret Frazer's best featuring Dame Frevisse. A well-plotted, well-written and well-edited book that puts you right into Medieval times along with Henry VI and the famous and infamous of history. Although I have read each entry in this series, I don't believe it is necessary to have read them to enjoy this one. In this tale, we meet again a character we've been intrigued by in other tales, Joliffe. He warns the nun to be careful with her sharp tongue that she not cut herself, but Frevisse is sharp all the way through, a thinker and observer and a true help to her cousin, Alice married to Suffolk. The story is smoothly plotted and filled with people you can care about, that you can be interested in, and that is Margaret Frazer's strength as an author. The mystery is not the focus of the story, but the people and the times are. I was sorry to see the story end. And I hope I will see more of Dame Frevisse and Joliffe in the future, preferably sooner rather than later.

Customer Reviews:
Great Read.......2007-09-10
This book was wonderful, it adds to the Black Jewels Trilogy, if you love the world of Anne Bishop's Blood realms, you will love this too. My favorite is the love story of Lucivar and Marian. I would definately recommend it.
Wow.......2007-06-15
I love this author, this story, these books. The characters, the story, the devotion. You walk away feeling you know these people and each of them become dear friends.
I Got my "Black Jewels" Fix!.......2007-06-08
I am one of the many hordes waiting, panting for the next book in Bishop's Black Jewels series...this was a great fix that satisfies my craving, for now. Some great background stories - Saetan during the early years of his marrage to Hekebah, the wonderfully satisfying story of how Lucivar met and fell for Marian, just to name a few.
Dreams Made Fleash by Bishop 2 thumbs up.......2007-06-06
For those who havn't had a chance to read it yet I highly reconmend it. While reading through the Black Jeweled Trilogy you don't think that there was anything that you could have missed. But this book really fills in the gaps and then some. The true understanding why High Lord Sadiablo is both feared and respected. How the golden spider became the Weaver of Dreams, plus the tales of Daemon and Lucifer. Bishop is a master of her craft, the imagery of her writing just sucks you in. It'll make you laugh, cry and hold you in suspence where you can't put it down. If you loved the Black Jeweled Trilogy then this book is a must for you collection.
Great Follow Up.......2007-06-02
I really enjoyed this as a follow up to the Black Jewels trilogy. Her characters are so well developed. I would suggest that you read the trilogy first or this book may not be as enjoyable. Be warned that this series is very dark and contains alot of sexual situations but it still manages to be very romantic. Quite a unique reading experience.
Book Description
The essential guidebook for the creative and erotic art of sexual role-play. We all take on a variety of roles each day: parent, lover, employee, diplomat. And there are roles we fantasize about, yet dare not express: the slave, the barbarian, the princess, the delinquent, the whore. Can these roles become reality at least within the closed and trusting environment of the bedroom? Of course they can and should! Fantasy Made Flesh teaches readers to use their imaginations within a sensual/sexual context and give themselves permission to become the creatures of their dreams: * let go of self-consciousness and self-criticism * set the stage with props, environment and costumes * bring your most outrageous fantasies into living, breathing, incredibly-turned-on reality
Customer Reviews:
Excellent "erotic role play guide".......2003-12-17
This book in the early chapters "dares" you almost to do what some of you might feel is somehow too wild to think about, like being the pirate capturing a wench, or the evil enemy commander interrogating an enemy spy, or the teacher "administering an after school lesson" to the naughty schoolgirl or a hundred other erotic scenarios. I loved how the author challenges the reader in Chapter 4 to make a list of all the reasons why they never could do erotic replay and then after doing that, come up with reasons why you CAN do erotic replay. I also liked her comment that when fear comes up it may mean you're getting close to something that may change you.
This book after assuring you the reader that yes you can too do erotic replay and do it well also spends a good deal of space discussing communication and negotiation between people doing a replay scene and then goes on to describing ways to pull it off. The book's second section called "The Flesh of Fantasy" delves into this, with chapters on "building your scene," how to effectively "play" your role, last minute details, and then just plain doing it.
The book has several appendices too which contain safety information, a "dairy" of a role play scene and plans, suggested music, a resource guide, even a sample negotiation form.
Highly enjoyable, this book has changed my mind about doing role play scenarios. I might just yet become a swashbuckling captain or naughty professor in my private play.

Book Description
Nearly one million Americans, including Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali, suffer from Parkinson's Disease. Now, a leader in the fight against Parkinson's, Dr. J. Eric Ahlskog of the Mayo Clinic, has written the definitive guide for patients and their families. Dr. Ahlskog offers a crystal-clear, nuts-and-bolts approach to the treatment of PD, distilled from over twenty years of experience as a clinician and researcher. His goal is to educate the patient so that they can better team with their doctor to do battle with the disease, streamlining the decision-making process and enhancing their treatment. To do this, Dr. Ahlskog offers a gold mine of information: How do I know if I have PD? What kinds of tests can I take? What medications slow the progress of the disease? What if medications don't help my tremor? What kinds of movement problems may develop later? How can I cope with insomnia and daytime sleepiness, dizziness and depression, memory problems, paranoia, and delusions? Indeed, the book covers virtually every topic related to Parkinson's, from sexual impotence and skin rashes, to the role of nutrition, exercise, and physical therapy. In addition, Dr. Ahlskog discusses brain surgery (though he urges that patients only consider this as a last resort) and such experimental therapies as stem cell transplantation and gene therapy. There are also lists of support and advocacy groups and Internet sites that focus on Parkinson's. The ultimate guide to symptoms and treatment, this superb book is the first place patients should turn for reliable, easy-to-grasp information on Parkinson's disease.
Customer Reviews:
Thanks Dr. Ahlskog for Caring Enough About Your Patients to Write this book!.......2006-10-11
Dr. Ahlskog shares his vast knowledge, expertise and caring bedside manner in this book. It is specifically written, in user friendly language, for families dealing with Partinson's. It answers any and all questions one might have concerning the disease and treatment of it. It is an absolute 'MUST HAVE' book for Parkison's Families..
My Mom is taking this book to the doctor for discussion points.......2005-12-30
This book recommends using it to help discuss with your doctor the PD medications, which is exactly what my Mom is going to do today. When I saw this book recently it was what my Mom had been wishing for to help her figure out how to help my Dad, who is developing Parkinson's hallucinations and paranoia issues after many years of battling this disease. These are known problems from both the disease, as well as the medications to treat the illness. The book gave me renewed hope and optimism for helping my Dad be more himself again. Adjustments of the various prescribed medications can make a difference in life quality by balancing medication negative side effects with their benefits. My Mom is taking my Dad to the doctor today to discuss his medications and she taking this book with her. It's nice to know she has the Mayo clinic doctor, in essence, to take with her to discuss points with the local doctor.

In this handsome and accessible guide, popular decorating expert Mary Carol Garrity offers tips and ideas for re-creating her classic, relaxed style in the reader's own home.
Customer Reviews:
Romantic decorating style.......2007-06-26
This modern romantic "style" book is wonderfully photographed. People familiar with Carol Garrity sometimes call this style: the NELL HILL STYLE. By the way, NELL HILL was Carol's grandmother (Carol's inspiration) .
This book is not an HOW TO Book but mostly an idea book and it shows how to decorate in a "romantic ,though modern, way". This romantic-style of decorating may not be for everybody, especially those that prefer a more "MASCULINE TOUCH". But for me....I just love it!
The photos are enchanting. There are some nice written tips on how to decorate, though this is more or less a visual decorating book.
Decorating Outside the Box.......2006-08-25
If nothing else, Mary Carol gives us a few new ideas of decorating outside the box, so to speak. Her style is a mix between traditional and eclectic, so she gives us a bit of everything in this book. I bought my copy of the book for my design library for just a few dollars and worth that price.
move over Martha Stewart--Ms. Garrity is *the* diva of decor!.......2005-07-02
I am fortunate enough to live within driving distance of Mary Garrity's stores in Atchison, KS. Visiting Nell Hill is an amazing experience. Atchison is a little town out in the middle of nowhere, but on the weekends, chartered buses arrive...the store opens at 9 on Saturday and by 10 it's packed. And the chic & cheerful Mary C. Garrity is always on the floor, greeting customers by name, personally carrying garden statuary out to their station wagons...
Her personal skills are amazing, but what is truly inspiring is her flair for display--a flair that is highlighted in this book. For enthusiasts of traditional, Paris Apt, shabby chic, English country, or any pretty decor, "decorating secrets" is a visual feast. I esp. love how it doesn't rely on priceless pieces of furniture and objets, but rather in a skillful mix of accessible elements to create a beautiful home. Bravo Mary!
Awesome book!.......2004-12-01
Mary Carol Garrity has writen a book that deserves a place in every 'home decorator's' library! It's easy reading and pictures a lay person can relate to~inspiring is an understatement!!

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photos and decorating a 'la NELL HILL style.......2007-07-26
This is a very beautifully photographed book. If you are familiar with the NELL HILL STYLE, then you will love this book.
The "Nell Hill Style", to me, is very classic and very "romantic". This is not really a how-to book but a book about home ideas...especially if you are the type of decorator that needs photos to inspire you.
Ideas from which to pick and choose.......2006-08-25
Mary Carol Garrity's store is the inspiration for this book and you can tell it as the pictures are filled with lots and lots of stuff! For most people, the style will probably be over the top, but what I like about the book is that it showcases many ideas from which you can pick and choose. If your style is traditional or romantic, you'll most likely find ideas for your home within the pages of this book. Make sure not to just look at the photos - the book is wonderfully written and there are some wonderful phrases that help explain Mary's decorating philosophy.
An awe inspiring book!.......2004-12-01
Well, I AM older!! Mary's book is now the NUMBER ONE book in my decorating library! I have amassed quite a collection of books on the subject of decorting, but not a one is as inspiring as this one. I follow Mary's belief of 'there are no rules when decorating, just things you love'. Her rooms are 'not just another pretty face', but rooms you can live in, while also enjoying the 'scenery'.
Do these bad reviewers have a vendetta?.......2003-01-25
Style is personal, I understand that. I recently purchased a copy of Style at Home while visiting Atchison, KS. I was not expecting a store like Nell Hill's in a town of 10,000. It is true that the book does not give the full picture, but it does give some interesting ways to look at the way a home and its furnishings are setup. The book urges the reader to use things in new and interesting ways while not throwing out the history and the style of the things you have. It does not surprise me that some designers may not like this book, it puts some great tools in the hands of the people who would probably be paying them. If you ever get a chance, beat a path to Nell Hill's and check out the hospitality that is evident in the pictures that are displayed in this lovely book. And by the way, I am not old, I am 25! Mary Carol, keep up the good work!
