Very suspenseful.......2007-01-20
Anne Perry keeps you guessing from the first page. What an imagination!
Read this book........2005-11-12
It has everything an absorbing suspenseful victorian mystery could possess and it has extreme relevance to our mutual modern lives. History: it is unbiased history made up as fiction. Life manners pain and hypocrisy in the century behind us but all of this is still happening right now. Do not read if reality offends you.
painfully obvious.......2005-03-12
I won't bother to rehash the plot of this book, as that has been done. I have very much enjoyed the William Monk series, but was quite disappointed with this particular entry. Although I agree with the reviewer that the opening scene with Marianne does not originally make sense to the reader, the relevance becomes pretty clear by at most page 100. The 200 pages or so devoted to determining what it was Prudence actually wanted were almost completely wasted. I had figured out the answer to this question immediately, but thought that in Perry's traditional style, Monk and crew would be pick this up as easily as I had, and then it would be on to the next twist. Alas, they did not pick this up until the last 20-30 pages of the book!! The last chapter, which a previous reviewer raved about, in my opinion was remniscent of some of Patricia Cornwell's poorly exectued later entries in her Kay Scarpetta series: pick a person randomly to solve the crime. Also, character development was not up to Perry's usual standards; there was no additional insights or progressions of any of the ongoing relationships. Why wasn't Evan in this book? I gave the book two stars because I enjoyed both the description of hospital consitions in 1850's London and did originally like the plot but that it was not brought to a sufficient height and lacked "meat." I will continue reading Perry, since I know later books in this series are up to her usual standards, but would forewarn readers that this is not the book to start with if one wishes to "test" Perry.
A strange book.......2003-03-22
When I began the book (with the problem of Marianne) it obviously had five stars, when you finish that part you won't understand why it was written in so many pages and it really doesn't have to do anything with the book, so the book has now four stars, in the middle of the book, when you see why it was written the [beginning], the book has only three stars ..., and that keeps during all the judgment of the doctor (I won't tell you which one because I will tell you the story), but when the judgment is almost over, when you almost finish the book you will see that this is definitely a five stars book, And when you read the last chapter you will see that you will recommend this book to your friends.
Mysteries abound.......2002-07-28
It is a mystery to me that Amazon.com should begin reviews of the mysteries by Anne Perry by quoting "Kirkus reviews." The results are predictable -- the reviewer dislikes all of the strengths of these novels. He cannot appreciate Perry's real skill in character development. He is opposed to any discussion of the status of women in Victorian England; dislikes Perry's careful depictions of social mores and class status in Victorian London --despite the fact that these are often the very crux of the novels. One of the best examples is "A Breach of Promise." I haven't the Kirkus review for that novel but I am willing to bet that he really really hated it!
Actually, this series of novels should be called the
Hester Latterly - William Monk - Oliver Rathbone series. Hester is often the central sleuth and it is the links between these three characters which move the plots forward ingeniously. As example of this I recommend "A Breach of Promise which the Kirkus reviewer undoubtedly hated.

FICTION BY GREG STOLZE IS ALWAYS TOP NOTCH.......2007-07-25
ASHES AND ANGEL WINGS is a World of Darkness novel by Greg Stolze, meant to accompany the roleplaying game DEMON: THE FALLEN. Greg Stolze wrote the narrative part of DEMON, making him an excellent choice for the accompanying fiction. Besides writing the trilogy of which ASHES is the first, Greg has also written two fiction novels for VAMPIRE: THE REQUIEM. He is an excellent novelist, able to write compelling and sympathetic characters with good pacing in his story-telling.
ASHES AND ANGEL WINGS is a story about a demon who escapes from Hell to possess a human body, and his conflicting desires between serving the demonic authority over him and following his own selfish interests. On the one hand, I feel sympathy for the demon; he loves his host's daughter and tries to protect her and others in his life. On the other hand, he is ruthless in pursuing his own interests, to the point of torture and murder. The demon is a complex character, as are most struggles to determine what is right and what is wrong. The tension between the human host's desire to follow some moral code and the demon's desire to assert its ability to exert unrestrained power is an interesting one.
This is good. For real........2007-03-23
I never had a high regard for RPG fiction. Overall, I thought this kind of book ranged from OK to just plain bad, stuff that only gaming fans (like me) should read. That's because these books are usually very nice if you want to immerse yourself into the setting feeling and follow your favorite game's canon plots, but they fail to deliver as literature a little bit too often.
I changed my mind thanks to Greg Stolze.
Greg Stolze's writing is golden in every sense. He is able to portray ancient supernatural creatures without sounding artificial, nor plain. Stolze's favorite trick is to build several plots and then intertwine them in one big sick picture. He pulls that trick incredibly well. I was hooked from the beginning.
Demon: The Fallen is a very good game, that deals with difficult, heavy themes, and has a great dramatic potential. Ashes and Angel Wings succeeds in capturing that mood, and, here is the thing, is also very entertaining reading.
Great book.......2005-01-02
I don't normally read game fiction, but I really loved White Wolfs 'Demon: the Fallen' setting because it appealed to my love of dogma. I first read 'Lucifers Shadow' and it's short story 'A Legitimate Obligation'. When I found out that there was a whole book dedicated to Hasmed, I had to have it.
I'll have to admit, the book isn't ALL about Hasmed, but the side stories work their way into the main plot in such an amazing way, it makes it all worth it.
'Ashes and Angel Wings' tells us how Hasmed came to control the body of Harvey Ciullo, how he works to gain influence in the mortal crime sydicate for his own and his masters gain, and how, most importantly, he looks out for his daughter Tina.
While there is definitely a climax at the end, it doesnt really wrap things up and it leaves you wanting to know more. It's not enough of a let down to ruin the book, though. Just enough to urge me to buy 'The Seven Deadlies'.
Good Story, but Chicken out on the premise.......2003-09-18
I wish authors weren't so predictable and cowards when it comes to the subject of good and evil, God and the Devil. This book / series has such a great premise and potential, but the author chickens out when he deals the Good side of the Good v Evil equation. Evil is all powerful. Human have no resistance to it. Demon's can posses, destroy and manipulate at will. But good can do... nothing. There are no angels. God is nothing but a figment that is mentioned, but he "can't" intervien on earth because of... what. It's God, the creator of the universe.. who stops God from doing anything. Stolze tried to make the demons sympathetic even as the continue to do evil things. How they are misunderstood by God. Honestly, the story makes God sound like he is the manager of a 7-11 who just doesn't understand his employees or customers. How about a real story of good vs evil. Demons who know they are evil, revele in it. Angels who are good, know they are good and as the army of God will fight the Demons. Humans who have free will to choose between the two and are no powerless in the face of the ultimate choice in life and afterlife. Who can choose to fight on either side and face said consequences for doing so. One more thing... how can you tackle this subject with out talking about religion. Christian, Jew, Muslim.. how can you discount the books man uses to learn of God and our history. Since Lucifer is central to Christianity, how can you leave out Jesus Christ in the story of good v evil.
I wish someone would write a good story about the fight between good and evil, Angels and Demons, God and the Devil without skirting the religious aspect of it.
Best White Wolf Fiction Ever.......2003-04-24
I must admit to being an avid fan of Mr. Stolze but would like to add the caveat that he deserves the high praise that I give his novel. I find that many times a product driven novel usually loses sight of one of the most important goals of any piece of literature: Simply, to tell a good story. Ashes and Angel Wings is a great story, with well rounded and interesting characters. Even if you aren't a fan of White Wolf's game systems I heartily recommend picking up Mr. Stolze's finely crafted novel, you won't be disappointed. My only warning is to be prepared to buy the next two books in the series because you will definitely want to continue down such an engaging road.

Not the best sleep book available.......2007-10-10
I purchased this book based on my doctor's recommendation when I mentioned at her 6 month appt that she was waking every 1.5-2hrs. I was completely exhausted. By 7 months I had resorted to sleeping on the floor in her room because I was so tired of walking out of my room to hers. Then eventually she was sleeping with me on a mat on the floor and it was getting so insane! But even with all this craziness she still was not sleeping. So I decided I should do something. This book was extremely confusing and contradictory. It had some good advice as far as keeping a schedule and making sure they nap and go to bed on time, but this is fairly obvious. After reading the book I didn't feel confident in following the advice. So at 8 months old I followed the advice of a friend who recommended Dr Ferber's book and it was WONDERFUL! Much more concise and gave you concrete examples and things to do. I think I liked the idea of set times and a chart to follow. So I would have to say that although this book had some useful info, it was scattered and hard to decipher, the ferber book is much better in my opinion. She is now sleeping from 7pm-7am and just waking once to feed as I have decided to work on that separately and phase it out slowly.
#1 Must have book for parents.......2007-09-29
We have used this book for both babies. Works wonders. Very informative and helpful. Buy it.
Great book.......2007-09-26
Loved this information in this book. It was very helpful, as I am a first time mother. Discusses how to get your baby into a nap cycle and sleep cycle.
healthy sleep guide.......2007-09-25
I borrowed this book from a friend and found it so informative and helpful that I had to get a copy for myself. It's an easy read as well.
Helpful despite extreme wordiness and poor organization.......2007-09-18
This book could be boiled down to 20 pages, but instead you'll have to slog through it to get the invaluable information. The author's main point is that the best thing for baby is to get lots of sleep and for parents to try and follow the baby's natural pattern. Also he recommends the "cry it out" technique after reaching the appropriate age and weight. However, if you cannot emotionally handle this technique he offers some less heavy-handed solutions. Worked well for our kid, but then we've been blessed with an "easy" baby who has never cried more than 20 minutes before nodding off.
From the book we learned that putting a baby to bed earlier can help him sleep longer in the morning. Our guy was sleeping 9 PM - 4 AM, which we stretched to 7 PM - 6 AM in ten days, simply by gradually reducing his bedtime as recommended. He was nearly four months old at the time.
The other amazing thing is that our little guy fell into his own pattern before I even read in the book that it's the normal cycle for 80% of babies. He sleeps 7 PM - 6 AM, takes two 90-120 minute naps at 8 AM and noon, and usually takes a third, half-hour nap in the afternoon. Just like it says in the book. Every baby is different, but it helped to know this was the norm.

Customer Reviews:
Every New Mom should have this!!!.......2007-09-08
This book was a God-Send! Our son was only sleeping 10 hours maximum a day. He was fussy and irritable in the morning when he woke up. We did not realize how much sleep a baby needed. He is now sleeping 12 hours at night and taking 2 naps during the day. He is a very happy little boy and eager to go to bed at night. He wakes up happier and the fussiness has gone away. Dr. Weissbluth has excellent examples and stories shared by other parents. A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WITH A NEW LITTLE ONE!! GREAT GIFT IDEA FOR NEW PARENTS! DR. W covers other topics also that I wish I new 11 months ago!! READ IT, IT WORKS!
Lynn
I'd give it ten stars if I could . . ........2007-04-18
I'm a pediatrician, and I did not receive any training during residency on normal infant sleep patterns. I wish I had read this book ten years ago.
Dr. Weissbluth explains in a respectful tone why sleep is so important and what happens biochemically to a non-sleeping baby. It isn't always obvious to every parent that the baby needs a sleep schedule . . . this book explains not only WHY a schedule is so important, but HOW to get the baby started on one. It took a little while for my (then five month old) daughter to catch up on her sleep, and now, at nine months, she sleeps 16 out of 24 hours -- 13 hours at night plus two naps. The book is informative but not preachy. No gimmicks, just science. He endorses both "cry it out" and "soothe to sleep" techniques, discussing the merits of each, and is supportive of either crib sleeping or co-sleeping -- whatever works best for your family and parenting style. Like many self-help books, "personal stories" are included in the text, but unlike most self-help books, the stories are used to illustrate a point and not simply to self-congratulate the author. After reading four other sleep books, I've finally found the one book I can confidently recommend to my patients and my mommy friends!
Saved our sleep.......2007-04-10
We absolutely loved this book. We rec'd it from a friend and loved it and all the advise on teaching your baby to sleep by herself. I read every word numerous times and did all the techniques he taught. It was especially helpful knowing your small infant can usually stay up for no more than 2 hours at a time before needing a nap. It has totally revolutionized our sleeping habits and our daughter has slept thru the night (7p-7a) since about 6 mos. I totally recommend it and even give it for shower gifts!
Uses BOTH No-Cry and Self Soothing Techniques!.......2007-01-28
I read MANY reviews before selecting a sleep book to read during my last trimester. I wasn't sure if I would be of the no-cry camp or the let-them-cry-it-out side. This book actually answered the question for me!
The author describes how a newborn, up to 4 months, should NEVER be allowed to just cry it out. They cry because they need something but they have not yet developed the ability to link a parental attention to crying and cannot play "games". The author encourages parents to do whatever you feel is needed to sooth the newborn, including rocking or nursing to sleep. After four months the author said the child can learn to "fake cry" to elicit a parental response. This is when he recommends listening for types of cries and begining to "extinguish" the crying behavior by slightly delaying your response, especially to fake cries and night whimpers.
The author is strongly in favor of ample sleep for children. He explains how much they need (it's surprising) and that parents should watch for symptoms of drowsiness and put the baby down drowsy. NOT fully awake and not crashed-out asleep. There is extensive talk about what to do with problem sleepers. All solutions involve watching for the baby/toddler to become drowsy (slowing down play, rubbing eyes) and putting them to bed then. A few minutes of fussing will probably follow, at which time you are to check on them periodicaly, but a swift drift off into sleep is always on the heels of the protest. Most all-night sleep battles are with overtired children whose bodies are producing stress hormones to keep them miserably awake. Putting to bed while drowsy (even at 6 pm in the evening) produces much happeir, more alert and more agreeable children.
He cites endless studies about how sleep makes for happier, healthier babies and how IQ has been directly linked to sleep. (Children with an IQ above 140 have been shown to get 30-40 more minutes of sleep than their peers. That's how important daytime naps and scheduled bedtimes are!)
I very much liked this book set because I felt it gave me some very good, scientific advice about how to comfort my newborn and how to change my behavior as my baby develops to ensure he has the best possible start at getting good, healthy sleep. I rated the book four stars because I realized that nearly the entire contents of the "Your Fussy Baby" book were in the middle of the Healthy Sleep Habits book and I had not needed to buy both books.
good but vague and pushy.......2007-01-10
The ideas in this book are good, and when put in to practice correctly they can work wonders. However, they are a bit scattered and vague, often times repetetive. Sometimes seemingly contradictory. There is also the occasional threatening tone. Like "if you do not follow my ideas, your child may grow up sleep deprived and therefore depressed and unable to function". The advice is also pretty general, assuming that your baby is like most babies. They give case studies of babies who are different in many ways, but most of them still end up "but the program worked like a charm within a week and now they sleep like an angel all the time" which was not my experience with my baby. The program did work but it took tons of tinkering and much longer than a week, and is still not perfect. So, in conclusion, the book is a useful tool but don't expect miracles and maybe seek another source to compare with.

185 delectable recipes, and every elusive fact and helpful hint about oysters.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book on oysters!.......2007-01-07
This is a book written by a woman in love with oysters, and her love can be contagious, through her luscious recipes and well written interesting commentary.
Each of 185 recipes brings out yet another facet of these succulent savory delights. She starts with oysters on the half shell, with lemon and black pepper, and quickly introduces 6 sauces for raw oysters: Mignonete, Spiced Chili Sauce, Tomato and Horseradish, Dill, Remoulade, and Remoulade -New Orleans Style.
It gets better, as Oysters with a Splash are accented with citrus and vinegar, and are served with iced vodka. The naked oysters get covered as Spinach-Oyster Rolls with Mustard Sauce, or beneath a creamed mushroom sauce as Oysters Forestiere.
There are canape recipes, 20 oyster soups, 6 salads, numerous vegetables even grace the oyster's presence. They are deep fried, stir-fried, sauteed, baked, and broiled-grilled. This leads up to over 20 main courses, with such oyster preparations as Polenta Torta, Conchiglie, Hangtown Fry, Turkey Croquettes, Oies, Stuffing, and with the Noble Oyster accompanied by even Veal Rouladens, Scallops, sole and in Jambalaya.
Rarely does a "Single Ingredient" cookbook reach such excellence in simple clear instructions, and a selection of recipes that nost home cooks can readily make and enjoy.
If you have wondered of ways to serve oysters, or are just curious about this delicacy, buy this book now, and get cookin!
Almost 200 oyster recipes.......2004-09-18
Don't miss Joan Reardon's OLYSTERS: A CULINARY CELEBRATION either: it may lack some of the colorful photos of competing slimmer competitors on the topic; but what is lacking in color is more than made up for in practical applications: almost 200 oyster recipes, to be specific. Reardon is a culinary historian with a doctorate in English and a culinary certificate from the School of Culinary Arts at Kendall College: her guide is bursting with oyster flavor and a wide range of dishes from salads to entrees. Yes, there is a color identification section which chooses clear photos of North America's most distinctive oysters, but it's the recipes which are the meat of her cookbook, here.
Every Major Food Deserves Such an Outstanding Treatment.......2004-03-09
Every important foodstuff deserves a book like this.
The author, Joan Reardon, has both literary and culinary credentials of the first water. She has a doctorate in English literature, has graduated from a major culinary school, and was an associate of M. F. K. Fisher, and is a biographer of that writer. She is also a chronicler of Poetry by American women. Oysters deserve no less a scribe. A small reward for these academic credentials is that unlike many other writers, the author gives the correct translation of the French term `hors d'oeuvres'. I feel I am in the hands of someone whose opinion I can trust.
At the very least, this book is a classic single topic cookbook similar to recent books done on duck, salmon, potatoes and eggs, the kind I find eminently useful in one's permanent culinary library.
The chapters cover all the usual topics, these being:
Appetizers
Soups
Salads & Vegetables
Breads and Pastries
Oyster Entrees
Oysters and Entrees
The book ends with a glossary of oyster species, pests, preservatives, sources, and terminology.
The book succeeds better than many other single subject cookbooks in that many general guidelines are given to each chapter. But these introductions don't stop at simply informing you of interesting culinary tidbits. Each is an essay celebrating its topic in a way I have rarely seen outside some early writings by Elizabeth David and Paula Wolfert. The paean to bread ranges from Chaucer to the Chinese. Some of the culinary suggestions in the bread chapter I have never seen, even in books specializing in sandwiches.
Each chapter is also leavened with appropriate quotes from everyone from Julius Caesar to Shakespeare to M. F. K. Fisher. In many hands, this feature may have no more impact than some badly done drawings or photographs. But Reardon makes them work.
Most dishes are provided a pairing with an alcoholic beverage. Suggestions are not limited to wine. They include sake, tequila, beer, and other notable potables.
The central section of color photographs provides a gallery of oyster species with their geographical source.
This book is a joy to read and a delightful culinary resource. There are books at this price which offer half as many recipes and none of the literary delights. Very highly recommended.
Oh Oysters, come and have a walk with us!.......2002-07-19
Although he quibbled about some oyster details, my father-in-law loved this book . It's a must-have for an oyster man.
Perfect.......2000-10-19
This book is amazing in what it has to say, and how it says it. I enjoyed this book, and would recomend it to anyone who likes oysters.
