Book Description

She would have killed for a bestseller--but someone beat her tow it....Professor of Passion, the smutty new romance from Mildred Twiller--a.k.a. Azalea Twilight--isn't the kind of book Claire Mallow likes to hock at her bookstore, but Claire agrees to host a book party for her friend's trashy tale. As torrid as the novel is, it's nothing compared to the evening. After the party, poor Mildred is found dead in her home--stranged with a tightly knotted silk scarf. Now it's up to Clair to find Mildred's killer, and it won't be easy--the two-bit author had offended nearly every faculty member she worked with at nearby Faber College. But who could have hated Mildred with such smoldering passion?

Typical of Joan Hess, it's engaging, interesting and hard to put down. The characters are lifelike, and the town is one you feel like you know.

3 out of 5 stars Has been reprinted.......2001-06-25

... It is old-fashioned in a way. The police procedures are unrealistic and being gay can lead to being fired from an academic post. Much of the humor is heavy-handed and corny (addressing the cop as "Sherlock" for instance) but somehow I found it worked for me. It's unpretentious fun in the tradition of those old English cosies that were relaxing and easy to read if you willingly suspended disbelief.

1 out of 5 stars Unexciting and uninteresting whodunnit.......2000-10-09

The only good thing about this book is that you don't have to read all of it to find out whodunnit. The identity of the murderer is obvious from chapter 2 -- even before anyone has been murdered! With their identity so clear so early on, you don't need any clues or sleuthing, which is a good thing, because there aren't any. When the showdown comes and the murderer's identity is "revealed" to anyone who has bothered to read this far, whopping great loose ends are left hanging around, leaving you asking "But why -- and what about -- ?" The setting -- a bookshop -- could have been interesting but little is made of it. This book is the first in Joan Hess's Malloy series, and as far as I'm concerned, it's also the last.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God there are lots more Claire Malloys to read!.......1999-12-02

What a pleasant surprise! I'd read a "Maggody" mystery some time ago, not realizing there was another Joan Hess series to savor. Claire Malloy is bright, sarcastic, ironic, and funny as all get-out. The plot has enough twists and turns to keep you going... I stayed up way too late two nights in a row to finish it. Peter Rosen has definite possibilities, although his character wasn't developed quite as much as Claire's; since this was Claire's opening gambit, however, that's understandable. Loved this book, and right now I'm trying to figure out the order in which the rest were written so I can follow through properly (I always read a series in order to follow character development). Definitely have your library rustle up a copy of this one, and, I suspect, the rest of the series, as well!

      5 out of 5 stars A feast of history.......2001-07-13

One of the seven in the series "The Accursed Kings", "The Strangled Queen" is the story of Marguerite of Burgundy, the ill fated wife of Louis X of France. Incredible historical accuracy, attention to detail and high literary form make this novel more than good reading, like all the other in the series. If you can find all seven, by all means, get them!

5 out of 5 stars Marguerite of Burgundy.......2001-01-02

I am deeply impressed by this book.I really like Marguerite of Burgundy. She is independent woman who is not afraid of her sexuality.Even when she is denounced she keep self-respect and she never said that she made a fault. Some think that she was a whore but it is understandable when you are married such person like Louis X-cruel,dull,ugly,quarrelsome,uncapable to satisfy his wife.I think that she was judged too severely.Isabella, the daughter of Philip IV,exposed and blamed her deed but later she also had a lover. Her husband is supposed to be a gay. Both Marguerite and Isabell have their arguments but Morguerite is supposed to be the fornicatress and is sentensed to death. It is so unfair, life is unfair! We shouldn't judge the other people too strictly!!

5 out of 5 stars The historical succession of the Iron King.......1998-07-14

Marguerite of Bourgogne having fallen into disgrace is emprisoned in Chateau Gaillard. This (her emprisonment rather then her sentence to death) leaves King Louis X le Hutin (her estranged husband) still married and without a women at is side as well as without an heir to the trone of France (since Jeanne de Navarre is considered by Louis as a bastard). Only one of two solutions to solve this problem: either Marguerite grant annulment to Louis (allowing him to take a wife) or Marguerite dies...

                  Book Description

1929. The author's West Indian mail boat lay at anchor in a tropical green gulf. At the water's edge, lit by sunset, sprawled the town of Cap Haitien. Among the modern structures were the wrecked mansions of the 16th century French colonials who imported slaves from Africa and made Haiti the richest colony in the western hemisphere. In the ruins was the palace built for Pauline Bonaparte when Napoleon sent his brother-in-law with an imperial army to do battle with slaves who had won their freedom. All this was panoramic as they lay at anchor, but as night fell, it faded to vagueness and disappeared. Only the jungle mountains remained, dark, mysterious; and from their slopes came presently far across the water the steady boom of Voodoo drums.

5 out of 5 stars Haiti, Late 1920s.......2007-08-09

Interesting country. Seabrook gives some background to the original American invasion and considers the effects of the continued American presence. It's divided into 4 sections: The Voodoo Rites, Black Sorcery, The Tragic Comedy and Trails Winding. There are several pages of fascinating photographs. Seabrook gets to the truth of the zombie myth by including Article 249 of the Haiti Criminal Code, which refers to substances producing a prolonged lethargic coma. His autobiography, No Hiding Place, is equally enthralling.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Journey to Insanity.......2002-02-06

I must admit that I am drawn to musty, old books like a moth to a flame. I hapharzardly ran across a 1929 hardcover edition of Seabrook's "Magic Island" and was immediately struck by the dark and brooding illustrations as well as the marvelous old black & white photos within its yellowed leaves. A brief thumbing through the chapter listings announced its topic to me: voodoo and black magic in Haiti.

Seabrook was a well-travelled journalist and author of numerous newspaper articles, short stories, and books. "Magic Island" finds him living in turn of the century Haiti and takes you deep into his search for information about voodoo and black magic as practiced among the locals. You are not only stepping back into early 1900's society and ways, but into the unspoken underbelly of Haiti that few "white" men were ever allowed to see.

This book is simply fascinating from front to back, but best to take into consideration the time period this was written and do not expect a rip-roaring-Indiana-Jones-style adventure that Hollywood has seemed to fill the current public's minds with. The book is indeed slow, as much of Seabrook's writing is of his conversations and meetings that ultimately lead him to the secret society and its practices. Have patience, though, and you will arrive to the "juicy" center and the voodoo rites Seabrook was allowed to witness and sometimes even participate in as an initiate.

I would suggest getting an early edition of this wonderful book as I did. By literally holding in your hands something that is as old as the story itself, it seems to somehow bring you a sense of proper time displacement and aids with the immersion into Seabrook's journey.

I look forward to reading other books by Seabrook as his life was as fascinating as it was sordid: author, world traveller, acquaintence of Aleister Crowley, chronic alcoholic, cannibalist, sexual sadist & masochist, and finally an institutionalized patient of the Rockland State Hospital up until his untimely suicide by an overdose of sleeping pills.

Perhaps his quests into the "other" side of human nature were merely a preamble to the bigger question of his ownself and his many demons that followed him. Regardless, you'll have fun going along for the ride.

4 out of 5 stars How Voudon Was Viewed Between the Wars.......1999-08-13

If you know Seabrook, and if you're halfway interested in magic, you should, you know how really well he writes. Most people are going to be interested primarily in the first section, which deals with "voodoo." He was much more open than most people of his era, and took as fair an approach to "voodoo" as was possible for a white man. If it doesn't look much like modern descriptions, that's because the religion is evolving.

Of real interest was his observation of the administration of Haiti. I was fascinated.

If they ever, ever reissue his "Witchcraft," snatch it up. I have an old copy, and it's wonderful.

                              Book Description

The work of W.R.S. Ralston, a Keeper of the British Museum Library in the mid- 19th century and authority on Russian magic and folklore is discussed in this latest addition to the Panizzi Lectures which also looks at travel literature and memoirs and examines both the merits and the problems of using this kind of material as a historical source for the study of popular belief.

Riding on the back of the fantasy role playing game craze came these interesting books, and plenty more popped up along with them on other topics, from other publishers.

They were designed so that all you would need was a pencil and a simple randomiser and be able to carry the whole thing around with you, and introduce the game and chance into it.

In this book, they threw in a bit of happy variety, and went for some SF adventure instead, which was pleasing.

Tommy Traveller is a wonderful book for children and adults. The set up is that of a comic book, which makes it enticing for children and the history it reveals are stories that seldom make the mainstream. I wish all children had a chance to read this and I hope that there will be more in this genre.

                                Book Description

When it comes to weight loss, the emphasis today is shifting away from fad diets and compulsive workouts toward sane, sensible techniques that incorporate both the mind and the body. This is the first book to apply the 2,500-year-old principles of Zen Buddhism to the modern struggle with the vicious cycle of dieting, losing, and regaining weight. From a Buddhist perspective, overeating is a disorder of desire. This book will teach readers how to find freedom from eating problems and the tyranny of desire that triggers them. Filled with concrete, practical exercises and the wisdom of the ages, The Zen of Eating provides, at last, an alternative to ineffective diet programs, products, and pills.

I purposely sought-out a book on the Zen of Dieting, and this was what came up in my search, so I bought it. I was not familiar with Zen beforehand, but I knew that all the dieting knowledge in the world was not helping me, that it was time to address the mental/psychological/spiritual attitude behind eating. This book was an excellent start. Some of the principles were too earthy and idealistic for me, but that did not prevent me from the benefits of many other lessons in the book. As they say "Take what you need and leave the rest."

                                5 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise.......2004-06-12

The book was much better than I expected. I felt compelled to write the author afterwards and thank her for writing such a book. I've read a ton of books in my lifetime and this is one that stays with you -- the principles can carry over to all aspects of one's life. It's also the kind of book you can pick up on any given day, turn to a page, and find something motivational. After 100's of books and 100's of diets, this was the first that inspired me to write a review.

2 out of 5 stars A striking example of "each to their own".............2004-01-20

Not since D. J. Conway have I read a book that so often so missed the mark...clearly some have found it a wonderful source of information and inspiration...I found it a wonder of bafflement, observations presented as "ancient wisdom"..."what you weigh or what you eat cannot provide lasting nourishment because they are always changing." (what you ate is not supposed to last forever) "The Buddha did what you and I have done many times. He went to the opposite extreme. Instead of indulging himself, he deprived himself." (page 6) "Unlike you and me, Buddha did not bounce back and forth between the extremes of indulgnece (overeating) and deprivation (restricted dieting)." (page 7)...It does sound very profound unless you think while you are reading it......really, Buddha did not have an eating disorder, he fasted in the tradition of spiritual aspirants of the age until he decided/realized to try another practice. Better (I think) to read general books on Buddhism and allow the practice to flow naturally into your relationship with food.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and very helpful.......2003-07-04

It has been a long time since I have savored a book as much as I have been this one. I hope I do not repeat what other positive reviews have said, and if I do, I apologize.

I liked the combination of using real life examples rather than antidotes for showing how people behave and how they can change for the positive, and let go of negative desires. I say negative because as the author wisely notes on page 58 "Letting go doesn't mean annihilating, rejecting feelings, or pretending that you don't have strong feelings". Or on page 62 "Letting go doesn't mean any of these desires disappear. It means that they no longer have control over you". The author notes that we can still like a certain ice cream or treat and enjoy it, but that the treat doesn't have to become an obsession. But more a take it or leave it way of eating. And that once we let go of the habitual desire that food even begins to taste better.

My husband and I grew up in the 40-50's and he remarked that growing up he often was hungry which is why he probably eats "stuff" because he wants to feel full and not wanting. In the late 40's when I was a toddler a sibling often stole food so we could eat. So I to grew up wondering if I would ever not have to worry about food. It has only been since I have been serious about finding out how to let go of the fear-desire issue that my weight started to drop, and I became healthier.

Its also interesting how the author explains how often people drink, smoke, eat wrong because of some issue of fear, be it speaking up when someone says something bad, or when we are faced with a challenge we are afraid of, or because we are afraid of the unknown, like being rejected.

This is a thoughtful and helpful book and one I am so pleased I bought.

5 out of 5 stars Graceful and difficult.......2003-03-15

I'm going back to read this book again. Kabatznick writes with the equanimity that convinces me she knows what she is talking about. The cornerstone of her advice is so easy to say and so difficult to make part of your life: Desires arise, and they pass away; watch they rise, do not pig out, and watch them pass away. Of course it is difficult, as is anything worth achieving.

                                Book Description

For Bettina Vitell the simple art of cooking holds the seeds to a deeper, more life-enriching experience. It is a way to become more aware of ourselves and the world around us, to think clearly and to delight in even the most basic daily activities of our lives.

The dishes in A Taste of Heaven and Earth reflect this Zen philosophy. Bettina Vitell's uncomplicated recipes produce sophisticated, creative meals without ever losing site of her goal of preparing low-dairy vegetarian food. Tastes from both East and West merge with delicious results: here kale and tofu adorn pizza, and udon noodles are dressed with pesto. There are recipes for soup stock and tomato sauce, as well as cashew ginger sauce and apricot lime chutney. The homey breakfast and dessert sections provide recipes for muffins and crisps; and sections on pizza, sushi, curries, and Mexican-inspired foods expand the traditional range of vegetarian cooking.

A Taste of Heaven and Earth explores beyond the reaches of traditional cook-books by offering contemplative essays and ink drawings that heighten the cook's sensory experience in the kitchen. They provide questions and stories that help readers realize the simplicity and beauty inherent in preparing and eating good food.

As a vegetarian who loves to cook, I have lots of veg or veg-friendly cookbooks, but this one is my absolute favorite. I trust it completely-- every recipe is delicious. My favorites include the light quiche-like vegetable tarts (I started with the tomato and chard tart recipe, but then branched out into mushrooms, broccoli, leeks, etc, as my mood strikes) and the broccoli salad with chili lime basil dressing. The simple stir-fry tofu made for this salad is the absolute best tofu I've ever had-- the only trouble with it is how hard it is to refrain from eating it so that enough ends up in the salad!

A "Zen" approach to cooking? The book features an essay by Eido Shimano roshi, and the author is informed by her experiences cooking for the sangha at Dai Bosatsu monastery, but this book stands most prominently as a fine vegetarian cookbook, light on dairy ingredients and hard-to-find items. The recipes are clear, uncomplicated, and my own "success" rate with them has been very high.

The book's sections are organized into breakfast ideas, an excellent chapter of soup recipes (check out the minty lentil soup - a lentil soup primavera?!?), mexican ideas, pizzas!, great salad ideas, and desserts. Crepes and polenta are also introduced to the beginner or near-beginner.

                                Book Description

The Cosmos in a Carrot distills the best of Buddhist wisdom, nutritional information, and health advice and puts it together in a lively guide that challenges conventional thinking. Aimed at a broad audience, the book is divided into three main parts: What Would Buddha Eat, A Mindful Diet, and A Mindful Diet in Action. Author Carmen Yuen offers authoritative discussion of nutritional science, such as calories, antioxidants, and the different types of fats, and gives practical suggestions on consumption strategies, mindful grocery lists, and recipes. In clear, informed prose she helps readers understand their relationship to food, weight, and health by using a “whole systems” approach of mindfulness techniques to break the patterns of unhealthy eating. The Cosmos in a Carrot explains how to integrate foundational Buddhist ideas, such as non-violence and no-self, and practices like the tea ceremony into the reader’s everyday experiences with food. Profiles of four “mindful eaters” help personalize the process.

5 out of 5 stars A sage approach to eating well.......2007-01-05

Combining the sage advice of Zen and the wonderful insight of ways to best heal and help our bodies, this author does an awesome job of bringing us suggestions for both our bodies and souls. With sections like "A Mindful Diet" and "What Would Buddha Eat?", I was able to learn so much about the healthier ways to live in the flow.

Actions like drinking more water, reducing salt, and avoiding coffee are all great ways to get more centered within ourselves and I was also pleased to see right at the front "The Five Mindfulness Teachings" that can transform us into a place of giving and receiving. There are interesting charts and pictures throughout and I was left feeling like I had a starting point, a road map to help me live a peaceful existence inside and out. I would recommend this enlightened how-to to anyone who has the desire to live a calm and more balanced life. Thanks Carmen, for showing us the way.

The book promises, "The Cosmos in a Carrot distills the best of Buddhist wisdom, nutritional information, and health advice "

It delivers on none of it's claims.

The Buddhism is shallow, at best.
                                The nutritional information is wrong.
The health information is a handy cut and paste from web sources.

The strange thing is, she does not appear to have read her own sources. Source information (when available) does not nessisarily support her point.

The book reads more like a Freshman paper. Lacking understanding of the subject and a superficial understanding of what she writes about.

1 out of 5 stars Some interesting but more just wacky........2007-01-02

The premise starts off nice. Healthful eating.
But from there she goes 'Earth Goddess' wacky.
"Cholesterol is like SUVs" they clog up the highways and arteries. ???
"Cows will not eat genetically modified corn' [given a choice].
In America all the cows corn is genetically modified.
Talks about eating organics but then makes it evident that she does not know what organic is.

In some areas she just makes up stuff, citing no source or study. Kind of a friend of a friend once told my friend that.........

There may be a few nuggets of wisdom in this book. However digging through the misinformation, statements that come out of nowhere, forcing the results to equal Buddhism, it was just plain irritating. Their is more bad information in here than good.

I'm Buddhist and a certified nutritionist, so I thought this would be an interesting linking of the two.

                                It wasn't.

5 out of 5 stars Great 'old fashioned' book.......2007-05-27

I really like this book because it offers wonderful ideas for elegant and fun cakes, but one can make them with a little creativity. This is in contrast to the Wilton Cake line of products, which are all about buying a certain product to make the cake. The Betty Crocker book teaches one how to make a train cake by making a regular cake, cutting and 'pasting' with frosting. My seven year-old daughter and I have a great time looking through this book. One of the best tips: using a paper towel to make a textured pattern on cake frosting. This book will remind you of how your mom used to make cakes. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recipe book.......2004-10-07

This book is a fantastic book that covers all aspects of cake decorating. I have tried several recipes and must say that, through this particular book, I am hooked on this craft. The pictures are fantastic and the directions are very easy to read and comprehend. Also, the price of this book is an excellent value and bargain. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, without any reservation, even if you are novice cake decorator. The Christmas pine cone cake is great!

Not only have I bought this book - I actually tried a few recipes.

I must say that I was sooooo deeply disappointed because some of the recipes were just not "it" - especially after having such high hopes with this title.

On the positive side, I will say that the graphics and the decorating ideas are great - you will just need to use your own recipes for cakes (at least the ones I tried).

I became interested in cake decorating and found this wonderful book. It gives step by step directions for baking and decorating a wide variety of cakes (and cupcakes) for all sorts of occasions and holidays. It also provides time-saving tips for when you don't have time to make cakes and frostings from scratch. I had no experience at creating pretty cakes before but now I can't wait for an occasion to make one.
