A great glimpse of pre-TV entertainment.......2006-10-12

From spooky to absolutely hokey, this collection of radio mysteries from the 1940s is a wonderful glimpse into entertainment before the advent of the tube. Almost as interesting as the mysteries themselves are the commercials and public service announcements (such as the one for War Bonds by Orson Welles).

An excellent collection, with performances by Richard Widmark, Orson Welles, Edmond O'Brien, Dinah Shore, Basil Rathbrone and Jack Webb.

Not what I expected.......2004-09-27

I thought that this collection of stories were going to be "mysteries," something more along the lines of detectives, crimes, and sleuthing. What it turned out to be was a collection of good radio dramas that were more accounts of "strange happenings" and "thrillers." The audio quality was good and the stories were well done, I just think that the CD's were a bit misleading in their titles.

If you're a lover of old time radio, this collection of mysteries is fantastic. Commercials are even included which adds to the fun.

I like this collection because it isn't interrupted by modern day narration recounting the history of the shows like some other collections are. The sound quality is also far superior to other non-Smithsonian collections.

Others may be less expensive, but I don't believe that you get the quality you get here. Definitely worth the money.

Greats in the crime, supernatural, and suspense genres.......2001-08-04

No science fiction unless you count Escape's great adaptation of "Country of the Blind". And only one detective type which classifies as mystery because of the mysterious "Fatima". Still, a great collection. Top of the heap is the "Suspense" classic, "The Hitchhiker" with the great Orson Wells at his greatest. "Escape" is represented as mentioned above with "Country of the Blind", a H. G. Wells story, spotlighting the terrific use of sound effects and music in telling the story. Then, there's not one, but two examples of the great Arch Oboler. First, there's "Cat Wife" on "Everyman's Theater", an admittedly preposterous supernatural story, but made one of the most entertaining entries here because of the Oboler genius of use of the voices. The "Lights Out" episode, also featuring Oboler's talent, was the lesser of the two, but quite interesting because of the dramatic acting by singer Dinah Shore and tough voiced Gloria Blondell. "The Whistler" and "Inner Sanctum" were two of the best loved mystery series, and the theme music of the former, and use of the organ in the latter definitely are masterful. But the episode which I found most interesting and surprising personally was the story, "Killer, Come Back to Me" on Molle Mystery Theater, a gangster story by a fledgling author by the name of Ray Bradbury while he was still writing for the detective pulps, before he found himself in the horror and science fiction genres which made him famous. I am sure that while many Bradbury stories were dramatized on radio, this was undoubtedly the first. The classic "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" from the Weird Circle series was good though I could've wished for a less familiar literary classic. All in all, this is a great collection which shows how sound effects, music, distinctive voices, stories with twist endings, were all used to create the beloved old time radio mystery.

Radio Noir.......2005-08-18

This is a wonderful and excruciating collection.

If you've read the biographies of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, you know how much loathing they had for the work they did on these programs. Hammett took his timeless hard-boiled detective, Sam Spade, and made him a commercial smoothie for more than a few of the programs on these CDs. Chandler wrote a few, too.

Like their protagonists, these authors did it for the money, which they needed for liquor. What's tough about listening to these works is that the brilliance is still there, but in between terrible cliches, hackneyed and contrived plots, and, in a few cases, really bad radio acting.

But you cannot do without this collection if you have any serious interest in 20th Century American history and culture. If you only view this as a compelling argument against the commercialization of art, so be it.

But it's funny as heck to hear independent filmmakers today bemoaning the levelling effect of popular media. It was just the same way in 1945 as in 2005, and we're somehow still producing great art in so many venues.

Like Talking Heads used to say, "same as it ever was."

The Flawlessly Written Story of a Boy and His Dog Continues. . ........2007-08-21

Let me begin by saying that Brian Jacques has my utmost respect. Having had the extreme pleasure of meeting him in person twice, I view him as both an amazingly talented author and a fantastic human being. I started reading his Redwall series when I was in middle school and eagerly picked up the Castaway series during my college years. I have never been disappointed with his uncanny ability for storytelling and creating memorable characters.

Upon finishing this book, I believe it is yet another triumph from Brian Jacques. But I have to admit I had a hard time getting fully interested in it from the very beginning. I even started and stopped the book twice over the last few years before just this last month getting the patience to get past the point I kept stopping at. I realized, upon the third try, that if I could just get past all the early action on the sea, that I would be fine. It's not that I dislike the descriptions and action on the ships - Jacques writes these scenes with extreme attention to detail and I appreciate that. But for some reason I just truly LOVE the village scenes where Ben and Ned meet characters that they help, befriend, and inevitably have to leave. It's more the human element that draws me to these stories and I think Jacques writes those elements flawlessly. Is there a better story of the true lasting power of a love and relationship between a boy and his dog than these? - I truly doubt it. I greatly love and admire the characters of Ben and Ned and my heart finds it easy to follow them on their journeys.

So once I hit "The Razan" section of the book, I flew through the rest of the pages quickly, reading both morning and night on the train, curious to see what would happen next. I just think, for me, it's more about the characters and their relationships and less about the action, although it is stimulating and Jacques paints a wonderful picture throughout the entire tale.

Overall, I still think I liked The Castaways of the Flying Dutchman better than The Angel's Command, but that doesn't take away from what is a very worthwhile series that Jacques has created, one that I am very excited to continue reading.

This awesome novel by Brian Jacques is one of the best ones yet. I had only thought that Brian Jacques was famous for his redwall books, but then when I studied him, I realized there was a lot more to Brian Jacques than I thought! I reccomend his books to people with lots of adventure and a moderate sense of humor!

The Angel's Command- Review.......2007-03-26

This book is a great continuer of Castaways of the Flying Dutchman. Once again Ben and Ned are off to sea and this time with a kind,good-spirited,jolly captain. They are chased by pirates and privateers,attacked by ruthless bandits,and befriend a ruler. Together and with some friends they overcome these hardships and to spread good and kindness-on the angel's every command. This book is a real page turner. I could't put it down for hours. It's a real compliment to Brian Jaques's writing. Definitly a 5-star book.

I never read the first book in this series. I came across this book on a sale rack for two dollars and what a deal! Brian Jacques unique storytelling allows you to taste the sea waters and shiver from the cold of the mountains. The story take you from one edge of the world to the other. I have read some books from the Red Wall series and this one is just as exciting, if not more.

Better then the first book............2006-10-31

Overall, I enjoyed this book whole lot better then I enjoyed the first book of this series. At least this time, the story take place within the framework from the time when the Flying Dutchman got cursed. The story maintained it pacing better and it was more consistence. The characters proves to be somewhat interesting and relatively well thoughtout within the frame work of the book. While Brian Jacques' writing in this series appears to be less impressive then his Redwall series, I thought it was an interesting and somewhat entertaining reading material for the young and the old. Ben and Ned's interpersonal communication keep the story going and I am still not sure if their eternal youth is a curse or a blessing. What would it be like to be young, blond and good looking with a loyal and intelligent dog at your bare feet forever?? It may be the combination of both as they aged in years but not in body.

I did spot several of obvious mistakes in Angel's Command commited by Mr. Jacques. First, when Capt Teal was being threatened toward the end, he was threatened with a "guillotine", a name not used until the French Revolution and not a form of execution in France during the reign of Louis XIII. Second, Teal identified himself as being in "His Britannic Majesty" service, such terms were not used by Englishmen in service of Charles I. I should also mentioned that term "centimes" which was being haggled over at the gates wasn't used until Napoleonic period and five francs is more money then most French would see in a month back in 1620s. Proper term would be "sou" back then which was wortha bout 5 centimes.

Still, the book was entertaining to a point and I enjoyed it. Since this book proves to be a considerable improvement over the first one, I may hope that the third book in this series will also show improvement over the second one.

I have to say, I have taken a few of the Baptiste workshops, taken some of his classes and own many of his videos, but none of it really impresses me like his book does. In this book, the whole personality is set aside so that I can truely interpret what he is trying to say, and I like it. The book makes so many great points, such as comparing your body to your car and caring for it the way you would your car. I have purchased four copies of this book and given them away as gifts, I read some of the passages in the yoga classes I teach and have incorporated many of the techniques mentioned in the book into my everyday life and I have to say I feel much more powerful and clean mentally, phyically, spiritually. Every time I read it I find some new idea or concept that I adapt to my lifestyle and pass on to others. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is ready to grow and get to know themselves.

I love Baron and I loved this book. I started an at home yoga practice with his dvd's and this book and it got me hooked on yoga to where I was at a 5 day a week practice or more. He is so easy to connect with because he is so very personable and genuine. The yogic principles are so straightforward and the whole book is an easy access to a newcomer to yoga.

I would love to review this book but I never received it. After filling out the return form and sending back "The March of the Penguins" (that I did not order)twice,I gave up. I have not been able to "Journey into Power" or get any response. I know it was Xmas, and you were busy, but this is a poor performance. Do I have to go to Barnes ans Nobles to get it.???

Good recipes, poor nutritional count format, and likely too high-carb for most.......2007-06-15

I had a hard time deciding how many stars to give this book. Its carb levels are inappropriate for me (as well as the bigger portion of the low-carb community), but I'm trying to keep that out of my review as much as possible. Otherwise, what is good is very good, and what is bad is incredibly annoying.

APPROPRIATENESS:
Before you buy this book, I highly recommend checking it out of the library if you can, to make sure that its carb levels are appropriate to your plan. This may be a good choice for people on a reduced-carb diet (like South Beach), but the carb content is way too high for the weight loss phases of traditional low-carb diets like Atkins. Most of the first-section (lowest-carb) meals are over 10g net carbs, and some are higher, so you can very quickly go over the 20-30g net carbs that most people on Atkins do during Phases 1 & 2. The second and third sections are much higher, and may exceed what some people can eat in maintenance phases. (Depending on personal body chemistry.)

That said, they could pretty easily be adapted to be lower-carb by cutting the portions of veggies (if memory serves, one recipe has an entire tomato and 2 cups of spinach per serving), and cutting or substituting ingredients that aren't allowed on your plan. You'll just have to do the nutritional math yourself. (I've started writing my version of the recipes, along with nutritional info, right below the recipe in my copy.)

THE GOOD:
These recipes are fast, easy and tasty. Not all of them were my style, but I can see that someone with different tastes would really enjoy the ones that I wouldn't. Most use a small list of ingredients, which is always helpful. I can't remember seeing any specialty ingredients either.

THE BAD:
By biggest complaint about this book is that the nutritional information is lumped together for a multi-part dish, and in some cases, an entire meal. For example, most of the second section's breakfasts are actually a dish that would belong in the first section, plus a bowl of bran cereal or oatmeal, but the nutritional counts include both dishes. If they were listed as two dishes, it would be much easier to select and adapt recipes. This means that anyone who wants to eat one of the dishes separately (maybe you can't have bran cereal yet, or maybe you just don't like it) has to recalculate the entire dish separately. This is such a hassle, and would have been so easy to do properly, that I'm subtracting a full two stars.

Not my favorite.......2006-08-10

The book is okay. It would probably work fine for someone on the Southbeach, rather than the Atkins diet. It does give full menus at three stages of weightloss, but some of them are too complicated for my busy lifestyle. It depends on what your definition of "in minutes" is. I was hoping for meals that would take between 15 and 25 minutes, no such luck.

How Low Can You Go? Lower than THIS!.......2005-07-11

As a Type 2 diabetic who can only maintain any control over my blood sugars and weight through a strict low-carb regime, I had high hopes for this book. I hoped that it would provide me with inspirations for meals that would make low-carb life more palatable, and for meals that I could share with my non-diabetic husband.
WHOOPS! These recipes are NOT what I call low-carb. I would gain weight steadily if I ate from the plans in this book. I found one recipe with 46 grams of carbs per serving!
Unless you are someone who currently lives mostly on bread, cereals, fruit, soda, and desserts, this book will *not* help you reduce carbs more than a little. Shy away from it and read anything by Atkins.
What I recommend if you're a diabetic is Richard Bernstein's wonderful book, *Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution*. I am sure that following the principles he outlines is adding years to my life - not to mention the ten pounds it has, initially, removed from my body!

Body by Jake features these recipes.......2005-04-04

I got a small sample of these terrific recipes and the diet program in the Body by Jake Cardio Cruiser Rev Up the Results Program. It made me run right out and buy the book! I was not dissapointed.

Very limited application.......2005-02-19

The recipes in this book are not suitable for those on Atkins diet (with which I was able to lose over 30% of my weight in a year, then maintain the loss for five years ), nor for those who have substantial amounts of weight to lose. Gassenheimer, for example, makes it appear that one should be at a high carbohydrate intake (presumably, at goal weight) within six weeks, and the 75 grams of carbs allowed in the middle section are far beyond the level at which most could expect any significant weight loss. There are huge amounts of grains included - which are far from low carbohydrate, only high in fibre. Atkins dieters, and those on other truly low carb programmes, would not have grains on their 'ongoing weight loss menus' at all.

One must use this book with discrimination, and not accept the author's statements as gospel, because they are heavily flavoured by varied sources. For example, regarding main dishes, the protein portions are far too small for most, and would prevent the appetite reduction that is critical for low carb dieting to be successful (unless one is seeking to lose very little.) The ingredients include many grains, and grain products are not suited for low carb dieters unless they are at 'maintenance' level. Gassenheimer recommends all low-fat ingredients, and lists, for example, that one may have 'as many as four eggs a week,' when truly low carb programmes have no such restrictions. In fact, for Atkins dieters, the low fat items can hinder weight loss.

The recipes are no worse than those in many low carb cookbooks, though they are hardly gourmet treats. But what is key is that dieters must consult the guidelines of the specific programme they follow, and by no means increase carb counts in such a short period if they wish to succeed.

This book is suited to those who want to drop perhaps five to ten pounds, with an approach that is 'low carb' only by contrast with the ADA food pyramid, not in actuality. One could lose four to ten times as much weight on a truly low carb programme.

My husband and I purchased this book after falling in love with our local library's copy. This book really forced me to stick with the diet with it's six week's worth of pre-planned menus (breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

This book is perfect for people who need a step-by-step guide to beginning and mantaining a low-carb diet. I would recommend this book to anyone new to the low-carb lifestyle.

My husband and I have followed the meal plans for the first low carb stage of this book. I fail miserably at planning meals and shopping right. I never have the ingredients on hand for anything good so end up with plain grilled chicken and bagged salad. The good news is that this comes with weekly menu plans and recipes for *ALL* meals including sides, shopping lists and prep tips. We have loved everything so far, have been stuffed, and are losing weight. I'm looking forward to the easy transition this book will provide to 40-30-30 which I believe is a more sustainable balance for folks like us who are moderately to very active.

Fantastic cookbook for South Beach Diet, Zone, others!!.......2003-07-16

I love this cookbook! It fits my way of eating perfectly! If you are looking for a book with 3g of carbs per recipe or something than this isn't the one for you. However!!! there are so many other diets that can utilize this cookbook: South Beach, Zone, Atkins maintance, low-sugar diets, low-glycemic diets, and just general good health eating.

Try it, you will like it! :)

A great addition to the low carbo recipes.......2003-06-26

I Bought Linda Gassenheimer's first book, Low Carb Meals in Minutes, and by following her regimen have lost 40 pounds and (unlike other diets I tried, incl. Atkins) have kept it off!

More Low Carb Meals is another tasty and easy to make set of recipes in the low-carbo diets guidelines. These recipes really work, and are really good!

Maybe zone-friendly, or "right carb" but Low Carb? No........2003-03-05

I must reluctantly agree that this book simply fails to live up to the title. Reluctantly, because Ms. Gassenheimer has again come up with a bunch of delectible recipes, from Pork Scallopini to a tantalizing game hen in red wine, and I'd love to add them to my collection. Unfortunately, as a carb minimalist, I really don't need the temptation of more potatoes, pasta, orzo, white rice...you get the idea. It makes about as much sense as "The Low-Fat Bacon and Pork Rind Cookbook"!

This isn't a matter of zealotry. There's a movement out there, separate from low-carb, to moderate carbs, zap simple sugars, and also moderate the restriction of fats. I've heard it referred to as "right-carb dieting", or the 40-30-30 plan. I applaud people who are succeeding on such a plan, which may for all I know be the best choice, for many. I'm sure people in that camp would do wonderfully with this book.

I hope, however, that low-cal writers, faced with the new popularity of low carb, aren't trying to ride the coattails of a trend by calling something what it is certainly not.
