Book Description
When a champion jockey disappears--right before a big race and the birth of his child--Investigator David Cleveland bets on foul play.
Book Description
Scott Wilkinson is a successful young advertising executive on his way to the top. Christopher Miller is an FBI legend who has been willing to do whatever it takes to see that justice is done. However, at age 50, he’s ready to spend more time with his family.
Two weeks before Christmas, Scott goes on a routine business trip that will forever entangle their two lives. It starts like so many others. Wilkinson calls for a car service to take him from his home to the airport. But the driver of Lincoln Town Car 716 is late. When he finally shows up, he drives like a maniac, and Wilkinson feels fortunate to reach the airport alive.
Then, he makes a big mistake. Wilkinson calls the limousine company to complain. Customer Service assures him the bad driver will be “dealt with.” Nicolai Kyznetsoff looks and sounds like all the anonymous others who whisk successful young executives back and forth to the airport every day, but the man behind the wheel of Car 716 is something much more sinister: an avenging dark angel who will stop at nothing to wreak revenge on the one man he holds responsible for ruining his life.

Kidnapping, murder, terror, diamonds and a turbulent plot.......2007-01-18
Chris Grabenstein has created a new and intriguing hero in SLAY RIDE.
This novel is QUITE different from his first two (they were funny and wonderfully different!)
SLAY RIDE is a wild ride, literally, with an edge to it that makes it nearly impossible to put down. A young successful business man disappears after his plane lands in Newark. His worried wife, pregnant with their second child knows that something is wrong, but she can't get the authorities to take her seriously. Chris Miller, an agent with the FBI, known for not "going by the book" is her last hope.
This is an hypnotizing tale involving a former KGB sociopathic cab driver, the Russian mob, corrupt officials, intense, vivid imagery (not for the faint-hearted!!) and an innocent child. Kidnapping, terror, murder, diamonds, and a turbulent plot draw all these elements into a dangerous web confirming Chris Grabenstein as one of the most talented fiction/thriller authors to emerge.
ONE WILD SLAY RIDE.............!!!.......2006-12-27
Scott Wilkerson is a high-powered exec with a picture-perfect life. Christopher Miller is a legendary FBI agent who is one of the good guys...and relegated to desk duty. The two collide in an unpredictable manner...Scott Wilkerson's life is dramatically altered with he complains about his chauffeur to the car service, and Chris Miller's (dubbed Saint Chris) changes course when he nabs a serial killer. Scott's taken hostage, Chris uncovers an unscrupulous superior, and at the core of it all is the Russian Mafia---and one sociopathic ex-KGBer in particular. With dramatic twists and turns, this tale is not quite what I had anticipated....but it jingled all the way.

Not the Ride I'd Expected.......2006-12-16
Scott Wilkinson has a business meeting right before Christmas. His firm has hired him a driver for the trip to the airport, and he is not happy when his driver is late. He expected his ride three minutes ago. When the driver finally shows up, the ride is a wild one, weaving in and out of traffic, speeding, tailgating, the works. Scott is thrilled to arrive safely. He immediately calls the driving service and complains about his driver.
That was a huge mistake.
Nicolai Kyznetsoff is former KGB and pure evil. When he is fired as a result of Scott's phone call, Nicolai immediately begins plotting his revenge. He is well trained. He is patient. When he strikes, Scott may not survive.
Meanwhile, FBI agent Christopher Miller has been benched. In his glory days, he was one of the agency's top agents. Now, as the result of an off duty investigation, he's stuck behind a desk doing paperwork. He's dragged back into the field when a routine looking robbery begins to involve more.
Yes, these two plots intersect. But I'll leave it for you to discover how if you read the book.
After reading and enjoying the first two books in this author's other series, I decided to give this one a try. I was in for a shock. While the story grabbed me early and moved along quickly, I found the contents to be disturbing. The story is more gruesome then I bargained for. Furthermore, the foul language, especially from the villain, turned me off.
If you are looking for a thriller set a Christmas time, this is the book for you. There's a good story here. And anyone who isn't as squeamish as I am should enjoy it. I, on the other hand, will stir clear of this series and stick with the author's other efforts.
So different from Ceepak, Danny and yet...........2006-11-09
a definite new hero on the horizon from Chris Grabenstein!! An astounding new entry for an entirely different type of series from a very
talented writer, who has actually made a most successful venture from the light-hearted seriousness that belongs to Ceepak and Danny into a dark place with an equally wonderful character in Chris Miller. Although I am an avid fan of Ceepak, et. al, it in no way interferes with the new series beginning with "Slay Ride".
For those fans of Mr. Grabenstein, I say go for it, but don't expect the guffaws offered by his prior books...This is serious business and I must admit that I am not a fan of violence so my eyes just skipped over what disturbed me. But neither would I be happy skipping over this book.
I'm also delighted to see the immense talent I think Mr. Grabenstein shows in his ability to so successfully write in what I believe to be two completely different genres. Susan
A thriller that will keep you up all night.......2006-11-04
The publication of SLAY RIDE, Chris Grabenstein's third novel, raises an interesting question: is there anything that this author cannot do well? Grabenstein seemingly burst from out of nowhere onto the mystery and suspense scene with what has become known as the John Ceepak/Jersey Shore mysteries: the award-winning TILT-A-WHIRL and MAD MOUSE. Ostensibly a stand-alone work, SLAY RIDE in some ways is a more ambitious endeavor for Grabenstein. Certainly, if his intent was to tell a story that would keep the reader up all night, he has succeeded admirably.
SLAY RIDE centers on Christopher Miller and Scott Wilkinson, two very different yet driven men whose lives come to intersect briefly but meaningfully. Miller is an FBI agent, a specialist in kidnapping cases and a legend in the agency. Wilkinson is a wunderkind in the advertising industry who sees the world in terms of seconds and minutes, causes and effects. Both men value only one thing above their jobs: their families. Wilkinson's life, though, is dramatically changed when he complains to his car service about his driver's erratic behavior. Nicolai Kyznetsoff, the driver in question, is a dangerous, rabid wolf with the ability to wreak havoc and revenge at whim. He slowly and methodically begins researching Wilkinson's life, plotting a dark and final retaliation with a number of bloody rewards.
Meanwhile, Miller, riding a desk job since incurring the displeasure of a superior, finds his path intersecting with Wilkinson and Kyznetsoff as the result of a seemingly innocuous strong-arm burglary of a Russian immigrant's apartment. Kyznetsoff is indirectly tied to it, and it has attracted the attention of a number of people. Kyznetsoff, the hunter, finds that he is the hunted as well --- by more than one party and for more than one reason. Nothing, however, will prevent Kyznetsoff from carrying out his revenge against Wilkinson, even as Miller races against time and distance to keep Kyznetsoff from destroying not one but two families.
SLAY RIDE is a thriller best read on the edge of your seat. Kysnetsoff is an unforgettable villain --- Grabenstein does for Santa Claus and limo drivers what Stephen King did for clowns --- whose danger quotient is exceeded only by his animal cunning and intellect. The plan that Grabenstein constructs for the climax of the book is nothing short of amazing, all the more so because it's so workable. The author, however, does not give his characters short shrift either; Miller is an immensely and immediately likable protagonist. SLAY RIDE is supposed to be a stand-alone work, but Miller is too good a character to limit to a single novel. Hopefully we'll see more of him in the very near future.

Enjoyable But Not Great.......2007-09-08
I am not a great fan of Dick Francis. I've enjoyed every one of his books that I have read, but I do not go out of my way to look for his other books. After reading "Slay-Ride", I still feel the same way.
David Cleveland, an investigator for British racing interests, goes to Norway to track down a missing British jockey suspected to stealing racetrack money. At the risk of revealing too much, let's just say things are not as they appear. The plot is satisfactory with probably more emphasis on action rather than detection.
With just a couple of exceptions, I could not keep the Norwegian characters straight - I don't know whether this is my problem with their Norse names or it's Mr Francis's problem with not givng them more distinct personalities.
Not one of his winners.......2006-12-18
This really isn't up to Mr. Francis' usual high standards. The main character is an investigator for the Jockey Club, and that is pretty much all we learn about his character or motives. He is more a plot device than a living human being with whom one can empathize. The villains aren't particularly interesting either, nor any of the supporting characters. The story could have been more involving if the characters had been better drawn, but as it is, it drags. Francis is such a fine writer that nothing he has done is totally worthless -- but this book is only worth one reading, and one puts it aside with a sigh of regret that this very skillful author didn't have the time or inclination to give us a better race.
Sub Par for Francis.......2002-01-16
It had been a while since I had read anything from Dick Francis and I was in the mood for a mystery and saw Slay Ride at a used bookstore for $2.00. Let's just say it's a good thing that I didn't pay any more.
The bulk of the murder-mystery story takes place in Norway. After main character, David Cleveland is sent to investigate a death is Oslo; he is nearly killed in a boating mishap.
The book takes some predicable turns until the killer is flushed out.
By the end of the novel, I was quite bored and the end left me unfulfilled.
I am used to a better quality novel from Dick!
Good story and good characters.......2001-06-20
I listened to this book on tape, and initially I had to accustom myself to the Norwegian setting and accents. Once I had myself acclimated, I enjoyed it a great deal, although I will say that I "figured it out" faster than I do some mysteries.
What I liked, I think, was the slightly unique setting and the things about Northern European horse racing that I had not know before. I also thought the chracters were interesting and had some depth that is sometimes missing in Francis' books. There are some characters in this one that I have wondered about as you would with real people--what made them turn out this way? and what is going to happen to them afterwords?
An excellent book, full of thrills and suspense!.......1998-07-07
This is a typical Dick Francis book - thrilling, suspensful, intriguing and irresistable!

Definetly better than the flick.......2000-06-07
I read this book when it first came out and that was quite a while before the movie. I finished the book in about 3 days and when I was finished I figured that this movie would be better than the first...I was wrong. The book was great, went into great detail about everything and had such ironic ending. Watching the movie they cut so much out and changed the ending. If you didn't really like the movie get the book and see how it was all really suppose to be.
better than the movie.......1999-10-30
While the movie succeeded in some great visual candy, it didn't do so well plotwise. All in all, the book is better than the movie. Plus, you don't have to wonder what Ashe is saying.
What the movie should have been!!.......1998-12-03
What the movie lacked in depth, the novelization by Chet Williamson makes up for and then some. After reading the book I couldn't help but think "why wasn't the movie this deep?". I highly recommend anyone that has seen the movie pick up the novelization. I enjoyed the movie, but felt it had too many holes in it. Chet Williamson's rendering of the COA story helps to fill the void left by the movie.

Excellent Read.......2002-09-19
This is an outstanding book, providing a wonderful insight into the pre and post production stages of 'The Crow: City of Angels'. It includes around 200 fantastic colour photographs of the cast, crew, and the set, as well as interviews with the film's stars, production crew, and James O'Barr, the creator of 'The Crow'. I personally found that this book proves that everyone involved really tried to create a film that was different to it's more successful predecessor starring the late Brandon Lee. This book is a must have for all Crow fans.

Beloved pediatrician T. Berry Brazelton offers hope and help for parents whose bathroom has become a battleground. With co-author Dr. Joshua Sparrow, Brazelton outlines a "waiting and watching" approach to toilet training. First, parents learn to recognize "touchpoints" (developmental signs of a child's readiness to graduate from soggy diapers) including "potty talk and play," awareness of other's toilet habits, and the ability to imitate behavior and understand directions. Readiness is further defined by the capacity for "object permanence," allowing a child to "say good bye to poop without feeling that apart of her will disappear." Next, parents should focus on a child's temperament. Parents are encouraged to confront "the ghosts in the nursery", by exploring how memories of their own toilet training create anxiety, pressure or overreaction. Braze! lton and Sparrow use this child-centered model to resolve a broad range of problems including bedwetting, constipation, and preschool pressure. The authors' clear and reassuring tone could be leavened with a bit more comic relief, but it is hard to imagine a more wise or well-detailed guide to this central milestone of toddlerhood. -- Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
A wise new guide from America's most trusted pediatrician.
Parents will welcome Brazelton's uniquely empathetic, wise, and helpful approach to this inevitable and often trying issue. Toilet training is a job for the child and not the parent, and by trying to force the issue or even encourage too hard, parents can set the stage for trouble. By "listening to the child," parents will know when their child is ready, and by guiding children in a series of gentle small steps, parents can help them make the accomplishment their own. A generation and more of children have been trained "the Brazelton way," and now he and Dr. Sparrow have distilled this advice into one priceless little guide. They first lay out the Touchpoints approach to the issue (a "mistake" can mean the child is making progress on some other front), then discuss the timing of this big achievement, and finally deal with how to respond if problems occur. For parents who want to get past this issue cheerfully, with the least fuss and turmoil, this is the one and only book to get.

Great Info in a quick and easy read..........2007-09-11
Mother's don't always have time to read...so I found this book to be a perfect book for my needs. It is a nice small book with the signs to look for, the false signs that many parents feel are 'signs', what parents do wrong most of the time, what they can do that is correct. the child's perspective on toliet training, etc...and it's 100% in line with my child development back ground...all the information fits well with most parenting styles...atachment parenting all the way to a more structured household. If you have a child that is gearing up to accomplish the big potty, I highly recommend this book before you get started. :)
flawed logic in child centred approach.......2005-08-29
When I bought this book, intially I had an open mind about toilet training methods, but after reading this book I am sceptical about the child centred technique. The reasons outlined in the book have a circular logic which makes no sense to me. Also, some of the suggestions seemed just silly to me - for instance, the advice to change an active baby's dirty nappy in the bath while she pulls herself up and down!
Dr Brazelton outlines the reasons for changing to a child centred technique in the 60's - to prevent the high occurrence of failure from rigid early training schedules which involved punishment and shame. A much more rigorous study than the one which Dr Brazelton describes would have looked at age of training and use of punishment INDEPENDENTLY, and then drawn conclusions on what was causing the high failure rate. As the study was conducted it is impossible to conclude which of the two factors - early age or punishment- was more harmful.
Dr Brazelton gives a list of signs of readiness and then assumes that NO child will have these signs before the age of 2. I feel that this is greatly underestimating our children, and also patronising to other cultures around the world (who don't live in "our mainstream hygienic culture") who train their children at a much younger age.
I feel this book could be very confusing to parents as they endlessly wait for their child to exhibit ALL of the signs of readiness and NONE of the signs of not being ready. But some of the signs that a child is NOT ready could be due to waiting TOO long; for example,
1. A child sits on the toilet and then pees soon after standing up: This could also be to due the child having made a longstanding habit of peeing standing up which is possible in a diaper;
2. The child is not uncomfortable in a dirty diaper: This could also be because the child has been in diapers for so long, he has been conditioned to accept walking around with faeces smeared on his bottom!
Dr Brazelton strongly emphasizes that toilet training should be up to a child and that it is his achievement. Of course! No one else is in control of his muscles! Why then is this only possible after a certain age? In the book, he desribes how he pre-empts toilet training questions at the 12 and 18 month checkups and strongly advises parents not to start until after age 2. This to me smacks of interference well beyond what is appropriate between patient and doctor. No wonder parents are confused - they are told to ignore knowledge of their own child.
As a final note, I'm a bit tired of the hackneyed advice "Don't worry, your child won't be in diapers at college" that seems so prevalent from toilet training experts. More to the point is, "Will your child still be in diapers when he goes to SCHOOL?", which seems like a possibility if you endlessly wait for all the signs of readiness. Perhaps then your child could attend Dr Brazelton's Toilet school for untrained 4-6 year olds.
Signs of Readiness.......2005-07-25
The part of this book that was most helpful was the list of 7 signs Brazelton says are the key to successful toileting. I had a late little guy...works at his own pace. This book, and specifically the list helped me to calm down and watch for ALL 7 signs before guiding my little guy to what he was ready for. My copy is totally worn thin from passing it around to friends. It helped me take myself out of the process and put it firmly where it belongs...on my kiddo!
just ok...........2005-04-05
i bought this book because i love brazelton's other best sellers; but i feel that it isn't as strong as his other writings. too much of it is focused on infant and very early toddler details; the digestive system, etc. there isn't enough substantial information for me to really have insight and make good decisions about helping my child toilet learn.
Low-stress, relaxed training.......2005-02-18
I found this book after trying a quickie method. My son did fine peeing in the potty, but after he began holding bowel movements, we found he had been constipated for a while even before we began training. We went back to diapers. After a little looking around, I purchased this book because it addresses problems like that and is very centered on allowing the child to set the pace. This could take months and may include reverting back to previous steps along the way, including getting back in diapers temporarily. I am not against quicker methods, but this is how we will resume training because of our special circumstances. So if you are looking for training in 3 days...this isn't it. But if you want to let your child go about potty training when he is ready and can accept occasional backslides, I would highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Cookbook for Ambitious Chefs.......2004-03-01
Tom's Big Dinners is a big ambitious cookbook, which will be perfect for all ambitious chefs out there who have plenty of friends and kitchen space. Tom Douglas has planned 10 wonderful dinners, complete with the wine and mixed drinks. The dinners are all fabulously planned and wonderfully varied. You could please vegetarians and carnivores at each of these feasts. These recipes, however, are not really for the kitchen novice, but certainly are something to set your sights on if you are one. Douglas provides some helpful "prepare ahead" tips, but not too many shortcuts. He tells wonderful stories about all of these meals--they certainly have worked for him.
Getting Into The Soul of Big Dinners.......2004-02-11
This is neat concept, that of "big dinner." Tom and his wife both knew what this was all about, everyone has their own job. Now, for Tom it means that everybody contributes something to the meal. What a great idea!
He starts it with helping us home chefs to "Basics" that is making stuff in advance and saving it, e.g. stocks, dough, etc. so that it comes in handy in putting together spectacular dinners.
Additionally cool about this are the some thirteen feats that are Tom's big dinner gang's favs. There is the rarified Wine Cellar Dinner with Chocolate Crepes for the finale, or the inviting "Merlot Release Picnic." This has as its continuous theme, you guessed it, "merlot." Included is yummy "Lamb Chop T-bones in crushed cherry marinade with tarragon mustard," with merlot in the marinade. This is great picnic or barbie fare.
The book is warmly written with great color photography and source info and wine & drink suggestions galore. Big dinners will be advanced significantly and funnier with this aid.
