Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh, by Matthew Fox, is a big, exuberant, difficult book. It's a new theology that re-evaluates fundamental Christian methods of perceiving spirit and flesh by denying any hard and fast distinction between the two. Even more radically, Fox denies that goodness and sinfulness can be cleanly distinguished. Following to its logical conclusion Thomas Aquinas's belief that sin is misdirected love, Fox describes parallels between the Seven Deadly Sins of Christianity and the seven chakras of Eastern traditions--how, for example, even the ugliest expressions of lust are, at their root, corrupt expressions of a God-given desire for union with another. In this regard, Fox quotes the German mystic Meister Eckhart: "Everything praises God. Darkness, privations, defects, and evil praise God and bless God." Sins of the Spirit is so complex and ambitious that its structure and language often become knotty and abstruse; however, Fox always returns to his central goal, "to ground our sense of sinfulness--and of awe--in the body." For this reason, Sins of the Spirit is a landmark of popular contemporary writing about Christian theology. It points the way to a time when we might learn to live out our confession that God's incarnation is the reason for our faith. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
In
Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh, visionary theologian and best-selling author Matthew Fox offers a new theology that fundamentally changes the traditional perception of good and evil and points the way to a more enlightened treatment of ourselves, one another, and all of nature. Through its marriage of spirit and flesh, Fox's Theology of Spirit sets forth a visionary but practical mysticism that lays out a blueprint for social transformation.
In this book, Matthew Fox dissects the roots of our culture's spiritual malaise and offers Creation Spirituality and a Theology of Spirit as the "medicine" for our society's deep spiritual "wounds." He shows how, contrary to mainstream church teachings, flesh is the grounding of spirit, and how spirit and flesh are entwined with each other in a felicitous and spiritually nourishing bond. He outlines a Theology of Spirit, an approach to the fusing of spirit and flesh which has been underdeveloped in Western thought. His cosmology stresses the need for diversity, the revelatory power of Nature, and the imperative of cooperation.
Fox draws together the wisdom of East and West on the subject of human destructiveness by taking Thomas Aquinas's definition of sin as "misdirected love" and ushering us through parallels between the Eastern teachings of the seven chakras and the Western teachings of the seven capital sins. In doing so, he responds to Martin Buber's call to "deprive evil of its power" not by "extirpating the evil urge, but by reuniting it to the good." Psychologist M. Scott Peck has said that humanity's naming of evil "is still in the primitive stage." With this book, Fox ushers us beyond rudimentary naming and places our capacity for evil in the fuller context of our touching the natural beauty of our physical world, the complex texture of our emotional lives, and the splendid depths of our spiritual center.
In
Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh Matthew Fox has created his most ambitious and profound book. The text crackles with his intelligence and wit, deftly moving the reader into an examination of our world and our perceptions about it and ourselves, expanding our minds and showing us paths of thought that you would swear were not there before you turned the page.

Chakras of the body, an understanding.......2001-11-01
Another great book by Matthew Fox. I humbly suggest you get the musical CD called "7" by Chip Davis (Mannheim Steamrollers)and thoroughly enjoy a new perspective on the sources of energy within and without the body combining Matthew's insights and the music of Chip Davis. Extraordinary.
A blessing to read.......2001-05-08
As usual, Matthew Fox takes readers on a spiritual journey of awakening. Full of insight, this book was especially of interest to me beacause of the holistic, Earth-based message found within. I did not find this book especially difficult, although that may be because my field of study is in this area. Perhaps if one merely reads the words it can be. However, it is almost impossible not to connect on a spiritual level with the meaning intended. Sometimes a book must be felt as well as read and Fox seems to write with that intention.
His Best Yet..........1999-12-17
The depth of this book reflects the profundity of its author. Matt Fox has always been a genius at research, synthesis and cogent analysis. There are so many interesting, difficult to come by facts which are all presented in the context of understanding our place in the cosmos, our relationship with ourself, our Creator and each other. Thanks again Matt, for all the hard work in bringing this book to "light".
Customer Reviews:
"Keep it light or it will not be light at all.".......2000-05-23
A conservative Episcopal priest, Capon is to theological reflection what stand-up comedy is to an academic lecture. Both may be true, but which one will you spend money to hear on a Friday date?
His lighthearted style belies the depth of his thought, and his passion for the truth. I have a theological degree myself, and found that his style resonated with some of the most meaningful theology I have encountered. That he makes it accessible is even more to his credit.
In sequence he deals with quite serious themes: our common priestly office as human beings, the nature of and reason for evil, and the will of God. He is always creative and original.
"We have forgotten, you see, not what reality means, but how it smells and what it tastes like. The work of theology in our day is not so much interpretation as contemplation. God and the world need to be held up for oohs and aahs before they can safely be analyzed. Theology begins with admiration, not problems."
Any pastor who expects me to sit weekly to hear him preach should spend time with Capon. Maybe some of it will rub off on him, too.

Light & Entertaining-Good British Suspense fare.......2005-05-16
Although not typically a big fan of British mysteries and the like, this was "bloody well" entertaining. I enjoyed the characters more in Fox Evil than her other novel Acid Row, which isn't as easy & light as this book and has more challenging complex characters. Fox Evil has good characters though, who you really grow to like...and the evil character is this story really is-you hate him. Scheming middle aged housewife brats, husbands having affairs with spoiled twenty-somethings, it's got it all without going too far over the top. Has all the elements for a good mystery with the twists and turn along the way to keep you turning pages.
I enjoyed that the female lead is not some screaming sod ninny who waits for the knife to descend on her, but is a successful career soldier who's smart-smart enough to be afraid, but also to fight back. This is great vacation or weekend book, a good summer read. I recommend it.
MIXED EMOTIONS ABOUT THIS ONE.......2004-09-29
I did read the whole thing. I must admit that some of the book was apparently way, way over my head...I had difficulty following the twists and turns. That being said, I must say the author is a wonderful story teller and her characters are quite true and well developed. I should suspect that Walters fans will like this one. Possibly I should read more of her work. Overall I do recommend this one, but with reservations.
So complex it borders on incomprehensibility.......2004-02-25
In a small village in Dorset, an elderly woman is found dead on her patio covered in blood. Suspicion is immediately thrown on her husband, Colonel James Lockyer-Fox. The question is what does he gain by her death?
Suspicion soon falls on others including a group of squatters that have moved in on land adjacent to the Lockyer-Fox manor. In this group is a psychopath named Fox Evil who is quite capable of the murder. James looks for his illegitimate and only granddaughter, Captain Nancy Smith. Why? There are many mysteries to be answered in this incredibly complex and confusing mess of a book.
Minette Walters has written several uneven books over the last five years. However, last year's ACID ROW was one of her best works since the incredible THE SCULPTRESS. Her current work sets new standards for complex psychodramas that are so complicated it borders on incomprehensibility. There are still moments of genius in the writing with her ability to set atmosphere and create realistic and powerful characters. . However, the plot is so dense the reader might lose all interest or wrack their brain cells trying
lighter than her other works, but still a great read.......2003-10-21
Previous reviews have covered the plot outline quite thoroughly, so no need for me to do that. I just wanted to voice my opinion that I totally enjoyed this book, aside from the fact that I started it as bedtime reading and ended up staying up to 3AM to finish it. I haven't said that about a mystery in quite a while. Granted, fans of Walters' earlier books may be disappointed by the lighter tone she uses in "Fox Evil", but I was completely satisfied with the characters interactions, the plot, the ending, the quality of the writing. Those who love the "English village" style of mysteries and shun the gruesome will find this a delightfully fresh adaptation....no Miss Marples (not that I don't enjoy her in the right mood). Only warning is references to animal cruelty, but Walters did not beat you over the head with it and for those who avoid brutality in mysteries, those passages are easy to gloss over. I was left at the end wondering how the cast of protagonists got on (though there were plenty of hints). I can't remember how long it has been since I cared enough about one character, let alone an ensemble, to wonder about their futures. I even wondered about what happens to some of the "bad" chacters. "Fox Evil" is not "The Sculptress" or "The Scold's Bridle", but I bet there are many who would enjoy it.
Okay..a good read in a storm.......2003-09-27
FOX EVIL is Minette Walters latest book and like some of her earlier books you can read it in a sitting or two. I read it with a flashlight during the Isabel-caused-East-Coast-blackout this past week so you can deduce that the book is entertaining enough to get your mind off the lack of light and air conditioning, and presence of rotting food. However, you can read this book under the covers at Girl Scout camp after lights out-its definitely PG-13.
Oh, I thought Walters was going to go somewhere with her plot. I expected the worst. I expected some of these characters to be the `people of the lie'. But, this is not `The Sculptress' or `The Ice House' and this is definitely not the `Scold's Bridal.' Has Walters returned to writing text for day time tv? Granted, there are some violent scenes involving a fox or two, but what would you expect from characters who get their kicks chasing one poor little helpless animal through the underbrush with a pack of dogs. Other than that, violence or the threat of it is largely nonexistent.
There are a few unnerving scenes, but the protagonist has just returned from a stint with the army in Bosnia, so the reader might not feel as concerned as if the stalker had come upon a little old lady in her nightgown-which he does early on and which is related after the fact. I can't say too much more without revealing the plot, but Walters might have made this book at least as scary as those ghost tales we told round the campfire at Scout camp if she had given Edgar Allen Poe a closer reading

The truth will set you FREE.......2005-09-17
Often we encounter new insights that some if not most people will resist immediately. This may happen with this book because of the relationships being made between what is often refered to as objective biological science and subjective religion. However, insight, especially divine insight, is often a result of finding a relationship between two concepts that seem completely unrelated, and yet in this books case, you will find are vastly related and perhaps a holy grail. Like it or not, open your mind and heart and when Brian's inspired understanding settles in your heart, it's truth will set you free.
Interesting (and Controversial).......2005-09-08
The Seed is definitely a book that will make you ponder deeply about the interpretation of the Christian Bible (the Qa'ran, the Torah and every religious bible considered holy today). Salvation and what you consider to be "the truth" will be challenged immensely.
For those who tend to question everything spiritual in life (and the afterlife), The Seed offers a fresh perspective regarding salvation and one's destiny. You'll either agree with the message of The Seed or you won't, but you're not likely to put it down before you've finished it.
And trust me, after reading it you'll want to share a few words with Brian Fox, the author! He's either blessed by God with spiritual insight or he's crazy as a fox! I'm not sure but I am going to read it again with a Bible next to me so that I can verify everything he cites. After all, how else can I judge his reasoning! Wait, judging is bad, right!? Either way, good book! Would recommend.
God given and inspirated by the Holyghost ........2005-08-25
The book was very powerful, and I related to the revelation by which Brian Fox was given by the Holy spirit. The Seed has uplifted my understanding of mankind in another way.Genetics play a big part in a persons future, good or bad.And the Holy Bible concured w/ The Seed scripturedly, mind blowing.
The Seed.......2005-08-24
This book is both brilliant and challenging. Author uses common language to explain complex and profound biblical concepts. I never read a book that combines biblical truth with human reproduction. He writes it in a way that common man can understand it. The book draws you in and keeps you intellectually stimulated.

Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended.......2007-07-20
I am a clinical psychologist working in a multidisciplinary pain treatment clinic. In my view, this book wins best of breed for a pain coping resources self-help book. I would put it in the running for best of show in self-help generally. Dennis Turk, PhD. is a leading expert in the subject of chronic pain in general and what works in pain coping resources in particular.
Like other good pain coping self-help books (e.g., "Managing Your Pain Before It Mangers You" by Margaret Caudill, MD, PhD), it does an effective job of covering the range of what has been learned on helping chronic pain patients help themselves. Important areas of pain coping resources are effectively addressed (e.g., effectively adopting the role of your own pain expert; the extremely important, but frequently overlooked, issue of pacing; learning to effectively moderate sympathetic arousal; reducing fatigue; how interpersonal factors effect pain and visa-versa; managing fatigue; changing thoughts and behaviors; maintaining gains).
Unlike other books on these subjects, this book not only provides understanding and information. It is structured as an effective self-help tool. Although I do encourage my patients to use this book as part of their treatment with me, I strongly disagree with the reviewer above who suggested that the book is not effective to use "by yourself" and should include a "user manual." I have found the truth to be quite the contrary. The user manual is right there. The book is structured into ten lessons that conclude with well-conceived exercises to effectively encourage adoption of proven resources. Many of my patients pick up the book and effectively apply it with little or no assistance from me.
For others, I often make use of the book a focus of therapy. I hasten to add that for many with chronic pain the first issue is determining if the cost of addressing/managing pain appears worth the benefit. For many gaining the motivation to help self is the biggest challenge.
If you are looking for self-help help with chronic pain, I highly recommend this book. I also recommend "Managing Your Pain Before It Mangers You." In addition, I recommend this book to healthcare professionals who regularly, or occasionally, treat individuals with chronic pain, as an effective summary of current clinical wisdom on these subjects.
The Pain Survival Guide.......2007-04-19
If you are dealing with chronic pain, this is an excellent book to add to your arsenal of pain management tools. It's taught me how to become my own pain management expert and how to really rest, relax and pace myself. This is one of my favorite books and I keep referring back to it. Highly recommended!!

Should have had this book 5 years ago!.......2007-01-09
Regardless of the cause of your pain, mine has had me low for 5 years and I wish that someone had told me about this book right from the beginning.
I've learned a lot about the high cost of giving into pain by remaining inactive, and about the need for balance in everything, including activity and rest. Everyone with severe and chronic pain should have this book.
For us with chronic pain.......2006-11-10
This book is written for those of us with persistant chronic pain. Written in the form of a workbook, it forces the reader to take a hard look at attitudes and behaviors that may worsen the pain levels. The book offers a perspective on the importance of "pacing" one's activities in a way that maximizes energy levels and minimizes pain levels. I would highly recommend this book for anyone coping with chronic pain.

Too bad.......2007-05-24
Love blueberries, but this book is a loser. I've tried two recipes: the muffins - ick - too much baking soda; and the bread pudding - way way WAY too much to fit in a pan, not to mention not enough liquid to cover the amount of bread called for. I won't waste anymore time or ingredients trying to find a recipe in this book that actually works. It's a pretty book; too bad the recipes weren't tested before it went to the printer.
True Blueberry.......2007-05-14
Although I haven't used every recipe in this bountiful little book, those I have have been stupendous. Highly recommended.
