Book Description

In the increasingly turbulent atmosphere of international politics, the once-grassroots anti-globalization movement has been slowly absorbed and taken over by the underground radical anti-technology group fronted by a mysterious figure known only as Lazarus. All attempts to infiltrate the group have failed; the intelligence agents involved have all disappeared without a trace. Now a sudden surge in the 'deep chatter' detected by U.S. intelligence leads everyone to believe one thing- Lazarus is preparing to make his boldest move yet. With Lazarus increasingly bringing deadly pressure to bear against the leading research facilities focusing on nano-technology, Lt. Col. Jon Smith- publicly a researcher for USAMRIID- is activated by Covert-One. With his friend and cohort CIA agent Randi Russell missing in the field, and with the help of former MI6 agent Peter Howell and computer whiz Marty Zellerbach, Jon Smith must find and uncover the truth about the mysterious figure known as Lazarus where all others have failed. For unbeknownst to the world at large, the Lazarus Movement is set to unleash a deadly scheme that will threaten the lives of billions and forever change the nature of the world itself.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-26

What I found great about this book was the fact that Ludlum captured every characters perspective on the current situation. The action was non-stop, the twists were great, and the ending was fantastic. I recommend this book fully.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time.......2007-04-21

I have read everyone of Ludlum's books and it is a disgrace that this book has his name attached to it. I struggled through the first hundred pages waiting for something well written and interesting. It never happened. I don't quit many books before they are finished, but I just couldn't stand this any more.

5 out of 5 stars A fun ride even though the villain is hokey.......2006-07-15

The lead villain in the Lazarus Vendetta is a mad scientist aptly named Lazarus leading a small army of equally mad mercenaries and equally mad subordinate scientists on a path to world domination and mass international genocide. On the other side of the fence, attempting to thwart this dastardly plan, is an American specials ops doctor named Jon Smith and a sly old British secret service agent named Peter Howell who soon discover that rogue FBI and CIA teams are also up to no good. Smith and Howell dash from one side of the globe to the other, battling wave after wave of enemy forces and all sorts of nasty weapons including bioengineered invisible nanobots which turn humans into gobs of slime, as they race against the clock to save the world. If the star roles were switched in this story and the American Jon Smith became British MI6 Peter Howell this could easily be a 007 novel. Yes the villains are that hokey. Still, the Lazarus Vendetta is a fast-paced ride, descriptive, topical, and author Patrick Larkin has definitely proved himself gifted with the pen.

5 out of 5 stars Leezit book maven.......2006-06-26

Like all the other books in this series, good adventure without a let up. You get right into the action and it doesn't stop.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2005-08-08

So far I am pleased with the book. If you are Ludlum fan, you'll enjoy it.

                          Book Description

Sometimes referred to as the "White Rose" because he was the last descendant of the Plantagenets, Courtenay spent over half of his life imprisoned in the Tower of London for crimes that his father committed during the reign of King Henry VIII. Mary Tudor released him when she seized the throne from Jane Grey after only a nine-day reign; Courtenay was soon regarded as a worthy husband for Mary, ten years his senior, but he diplomatically declined that arrangement. Indeed, he seems to have steered clear of any front-line role in the Protestant-Catholic conflict that was wracking England in that era, but he could not avoid being caught up in it when suspicions were running so high. After the Wyatt Rebellion, which sought to overthrow Mary, Courtenay was again imprisoned. Released about a year later, he traveled through France, Belgium, and Germany and finally arrived in Italy, where his activities will most likely remain enshrouded in the shadow of the White Rose. The culmination of a five-year research project, this book is based on a review of the surviving correspondence to and from Courtenay and other documentation from the period. There are frustrating gaps in correspondence during the last three months of Courtenay's life where a letter should exist but does not. There are several intriguing instances when Courtenay's name was purposely omitted from the translation or decipherment of correspondence that was most likely related to the affairs of King Henry II of France and his ambassadors in England. James Taylor has pieced together the story of his dramatic life through remnants of correspondence and documents from the era. * James D. Taylor, Jr. is an independent scholar. This, the second in his series of books on figures from Elizabethan history, was prepared on the basis of reference materials at the British Library, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, the Bodleian Library and Ashmolean Library at Oxford University, the William Andrew Clark Memorial Library at the University of California, the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Special Collections Department at the Alderman Memorial Library at the University of Virginia, and others, and with the assistance of the Courtenay Society, Powderham Castle, Kenton, Exeter, Devon, England. The first volume in the series, Documents of Lady Jane Grey, Nine Days Queen of England, was published by Algora in 2004.

This is the thoroughly revised and updated edition of the best-selling guide for families of children who have been molested. First published in 1988, this new edition includes current research and information on the nature and effects of molestation on boys and girls, as well as proven techniques for therapy, healing, and recovery. Using everyday language, the authors provide information, comfort, and advice on how to put the pieces back together again after a child has been sexually molested.

This book had some great practical guidance for the family going through the trauma of child abuse. I highly recommend it!!

I was unprepared to hear my 5 yr. old disclose that our neighbor had molested her. The Sheriff's department focused on her and as a parent I needed to understand what to do for her and for me. This book helps teach you how to respond to your child when they disclose. With so many children being molested, the likelihood is greater than you think. If you are not prepared, your emotions get in the way of supporting your child when they need it most. If I'd have read this book before, I would have responded differently. I recommend reading it even if your child hasn't been molested.....yet.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any parent dealing with this situation.......2004-03-08

I wish this book had been given to me the first time we started to uncover this mystery with my 4 1/2 year old daughter. Once we entered the "system" the experts seem to forget that the parents are starting at "ground zero" and have a lot to learn. Even after begining counceling, working with Children Services etc... there were so many unanswered questions and our personal struggle with denial - ("it can't be what she is describing".) This booked helped me so much, expecially the list of "signs". Thanks to this book, we were finally able to understand that many of the behaviors that our daughter was showing at the time stemed from her trauma, and helped us move through the process of healing. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK if you are going through this with your child. The most important aspects of the book for me were 1) the list of "signs" 2) reassurance that children don't usually make these stories up unless it was real and 3) that children don't tell the complete story at first - so they don't hurt the parents / and their own fear. Which is why it is so important to listen to your child and give them the love and assurance they need. ( and take the information your child is telling you seriously) In the end - this book helped us put most of the pieces together and helped more than the councelors to bring "peace" to us as we moved through the healing process, and reassured us that what we were feeling and the family process were actually normal. (and we were not alone)

In the heart of the Gascony region of France sits some of the country's richest farmland, the source of foie gras, juicy strawberries, wild game, and other delectables prized throughout Europe. Through the center of this productive land winds the Canal Latéral à la Garonne, a picturesque waterway dotted with medieval villages, stone bridges and chapels, traditional pâtisseries, and lively farmers' markets. The canal is also home to author and chef Kate Hill's popular culinary tours, which are conducted aboard an old Dutch canal boat. In A CULINARY JOURNEY IN GASCONY, Kate cruises and cooks along the canals of southwestern France, sharing 80 memorable recipes inspired by the region's farm-fresh ingredients.

I like this book, well written, terrific do-able recipes, it moves a long at a slow, meandering pace, rather like the Dutch barge the author bought.
In all, a good read, with a good section at the back on cooking produce, and where to get them,-if you live in or near France, that is!

By Bill Marsano. La Capitaine Hill, or Cap'n Kate, as I think of her, is a sailor, cook and blessed soul who lives a life to die for. She spends much of her year in Gascony, in the southwest of France, and she lives in a place she calls the Long Village. By that she means the Canal Lateral a la Garonne, which winds through some of the prettiest parts of France as it makes its way to (or from) the river Garonne, which in turn meets the Atlantic just beyond Bordeaux. She manages to do this because about 17 years ago she had the good sense to buy the Julia Hoyt, a

or canal boat to live, cook and teach aboard.

This delightful and envy-prompting book is the fruit of her years in the Long Village, collecting recipes, meeting people, making friends, exploring odd corners and traditions and folkways. Buying tomatoes from the lockkeeper's wife; getting caught--by a 12-year-old boy!--in the ghastly act of serving cheese <before> the meal; learning from an elderly <grand-mere> that a freshly killed rabbit must 'rest' for a day before it's cooked; finding a pear-grower turned part-poet/distiller; discovering the potion 'served on wedding nights to fortify the newlyweds'; and more and more and more.

Of course there are recipes; recipes by the penich-load. Cap'n Kate's are the dishes of Gascony, of course, and Gascony is that romantic landscape of Cyrano de Bergerac and d'Artagnan. If she can cook any and all of them in the tiny galley of the Julia Hoyt, then we ought to be able to cook them too.

A good strategy would be to buy two copies of this book--one for the kitchen and the other for the night table, to prompt sweeet dreams. Another good bet is to book a cooking vacation cruise, to plod placidly through the Long Village with the good Captain at the helm or the stove, as circumstances require. A quick e-mail to kate@thefrenchkitchen.com should do the trick, me hearties!--Bill Marsano is an award-winning writer on wine, spirits, food and travel.

I had the pleasure of taking one of Kate's cooking classes at Sur La Table and bought her book while I was there. The recipes are wonderful and her narrative really puts you in the little towns she describes. My husband and I rented a boat on the Canal du Midi a couple of months later and I brought the book with me as a travel guide and for recommendations of where to shop. We passed the Julia Hoyt on the side of the canal (never expected that!) and stopped and said hello. I highly recommend the book, and I highly recommend a trip to the region. We ate like kings, even when I cooked ; )

I love this book! I was drawn in by Kate's story - living on a barge floating up the French countryside and wanted to read more about that. Kate not only took me on a beautiful journey but also shared some of her favorite recipes with me.

I thought French cooking was fancy and difficult but these recipes are not. They're simple, fresh, and just great. I can picture her walking through a farmers market creating these meals based on the produce available.

The book is beautiful and Kate is a wonderful guide. Thank you for sharing your travels with me. When I cook from this book I turn on the radio, pour a glass of wine, and travel back to France.

I first picked this up at my library, expecting another in the growing genre of "lifestyle fantasy literature" -- you know, bohemian boomer quits rat race, goes abroad, buys quaint house (or boat), creates rustic & soul-satisfying alternative lifestyle and then =tortures= the rest of us by writing a glowing book about it... But now, Ratliffe's work is in a hallowed place on my cookbook shelf between Richard Olney's "Simple French Food" and "Lulu's Provencal Table." Like those books, Ratliffe's takes us deep into the heart (and soul) of a regional French cuisine, through timeless villages and fragrant home kitchens. Even if the book were recipes alone, it would be worth its price for the seasonal simplicity of "asparagus with scallions, mint and green garlic shoots," or "radish leaf soup." But Ten Speed Press has made it a feast for the hand and eye as well, with loving photos of the Garonne canal country and buff paper reminiscent of a sketchbook or travel journal. Few chefs write this well about the daily meditation of cooking, the inspirations, the happy accidents and the patiently learned techniques. Even if you never spend a night on the "Julia Hoyt," by the time you cook your way to "Flan au Floc" for dessert you'll feel you know this land and its people intimately.
