Book Description

Fifteen-year-old Luke is a skilled thief with a perfect record until the day he is caught running from a robbery gone wrong. He chooses to save the life of a blind girl, Jodi, rather than escape cleanly. As a result, Luke is given a shot at freedom if he will train to be Jodi's guide in the London Marathon. The friendship that develops between the two offers Luke one last chance to discover just how far-and in what direction-he is willing to run. A taut, unpredictable read, this novel will appeal to anyone who has changed course in life . . . or is trying to figure out how.

"On The Run." By Michael Coleman

This book is about a boy named Luke. He steals things often. He is like the lock picking champ. He can unlock any lock that you give him.
One day Luke saw some shoes in a car so he unpicked the car lock and got the shoes. When he turned around two boys named Lee Young and Mig Russell were standing there. They stole the car that Luke had just unlocked. The owner came running out of the store and was chasing the car. Then he saw the Luke had stolen the shoes. But there was a girl about Luke's age that was standing right were the car was heading. So Luke ran as fast as he could and pushed her out of the way of the car. The owner then cought Luke and toke him to court. Luke had to help blind people for his service. And that is when he found out that the girl standing there that he pushed out of the way was blind and the daughter of the man owning the car. Luke had to help her and run with her so that she could enter a race. Because her old guide runner (her dad) broke his foot chasing Luke. The girls name is Jodie. So her and Luke worked together so much that they became friends and trusted each other. But a couple of days before the race Luke ran into Mig and Lee. They wanted him to pick locks the day of the race so that they could stele stuff. But Luke didn't want to because he was trying to do better. But then they said they would hurt Jodie. And Luke didn't want her to get hurt so he said he would do it. Luke tried to figure out how he was going to do the race and the thing for Mig and Lee. But he was scared of not making it to the race and Jodie wanted to win really bad. Read this book to find out if Luke makes it to the race and wins.
I thought this book was really good and I recommend it to people because it is good and exiting. It keeps you reading and into the book!!

5 out of 5 stars Fast paced and amazing........2005-01-14

Originally titled Going Straight, this UK release about 15-year-old thief Luke Reid focuses who inherited his career choice from his father. Luke hates his father for missing his last 10 birthdays but hasn't quite made the logical leap that if he continues on this path he too will end up at Markham prison like his father. A possibility for reform and redemption comes in the form of blind marathon runner Jodie who is the victim of a crime Luke could have prevented. Coleman succeeds in creating a fast paced work that maintains suspense and doubt about the main characters' futures. In a few places the English lingo makes the text a bit obtuse, as most readers will not realize that `to grass' is thief slang for narcing or ratting someone out. Another area needing work is a slow chapter that is bogged down by entirely too much information about Louis Braille that would have been better suited to an epilogue. Luke is fascinating internally conflicted young man who has many gifts including the potential to change and the realization that he is in control of his own rehabilitation. The culmination of Luke's choices is a brilliant heart-pounding finale at the London Marathon involving tv cameras, police and an ambulance. All in all a compelling and wild ride about a boy with whom many young readers can emphasize and model their own desires for self-improvement.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Pair of Running Shoes -- a review by Alec, age 10.......2004-11-06

Luke Reid is a fifteen-year-old thief whose dad is in jail for thievery. All Luke did was try to steal a pair of nice running shoes, but he got caught and now has to help the blind. Unfortunately, the owner of the shoes is a blind girl named Jodi, and Luke has to work for two months with her. Then, if he does well, he gets to work another two months with the blind. If he does badly, he gets sent to jail for two months. Jodi wants to run the London Marathon for kids, which is two and a half miles, with Luke leading her. Will Luke help Jodi win the marathon, or will he have to go to jail?

Michael Coleman is a great author who pulls you in with the present part of the story, causing you to forget what happened in the past parts of the story until it's too late. The speed of the information is a bit slow, and so is the storyline, but in the best moments (such as when they are playing Goalball), this book is amazingly good!

Book Description

In Blind Run, Patricia Lewin has written a breathless novel of unrelenting suspense and nerve-cracking tension that is also a gripping story of lost love, lost innocence, and a last chance at revenge.

Ethan Decker is a specialized “Hunter” for the most secretive agency of the U.S. government, working deep undercover to track down and capture ruthless international mercenaries and fugitives. But when a daring mission takes a lethal turn, a renegade assassin kills Decker’s young son in retribution. Forced to leave his devastated, unsuspecting wife, Sydney, to save her from the madman’s threats, Decker exiles himself to the New Mexican desert to live in a jail of his own guilt and grief.

The day starts like any other in the desert: scorching, cloudless. But then, like a mirage, a car appears on the horizon. Inside is Anna Kelsey, a former member of Decker’s covert team, a woman Decker presumed dead in the hell following that ill-fated mission three years ago. But she survived—and now she shepherds two children, entrusting them to Decker’s protection. Before he can protest, Anna is screeching away in a cloud of dust.

Now Decker is reeling from the sudden turn of events—and the shocking sight of Anna’s body not far down the road from where she left his trailer and the kids. The Spanish coin under her tongue is a mark Decker hoped never to see again . . . the signature of the assassin Ramirez.

Suddenly the race is on: to reach his ex-wife before Ramirez finds her, and to unlock the mystery behind these two children and why Anna died to give them refuge. But for Decker, Sydney’s trust is not his to have any longer, and the children are pawns in a dark conspiracy so vast and so evil that even this former spy could not imagine the peril and terror that lies directly in his path.

As Decker fights to protect the innocent and struggles to restore a shattered relationship that seems beyond repair, Patricia Lewin takes us on a thrilling ride full of whip-snap action, deadly turns, and almost unbearable suspense.

2 out of 5 stars Call me Agent Decker, but don't call me in for black ops..........2006-03-27

I don't know how Patricia Lewin found me. I was a simple grad student in New Mexico studying complex systems and biology. She must've tracked me down through the trail of tutorials and academic papers that I left online using my academic avatar, "Ethan Decker".

I only studied Tai Chi for a year, but Lewin makes me look much better than I really am. And I don't speak (or think) in so many cliches either--except for when assassins threaten my wife. Then, of course, I want to make them pay!

Not particularly erudite, but a perfect post-dissertation page-turner.

5 out of 5 stars RUN get a copy of Blind Run! .......2006-01-12

A wonderful suspense story! In the first chapter, we meet an agent who retired from life five years ago when his son was killed. A former co-agent drops two children at his trailer, and he finds her down the road, killed. The rest of the book he's running with the children from the killers, and his own past, trying to piece together what's happening. You will not want to put down this book!!

4 out of 5 stars Non-stop action.......2005-08-24

Ethan Decker left the Agency and his wife after their son was murdered in an operation gone bad. He lives secluded in the desert of New Mexico, an area as dry, arid, and lifleless as Ethan Decker feels. Then one day another agent appears on his doorstep with two children whose lives are at risk from the same man who killed Ethan's son.

When Decker's visitor is killed a few miles down the road, he is forced to flee with children he doesn't want to protect and ask for the help of an ex-wife he refuses to admit he still loves. Hunted by the police for murder and the assasin who killed his son, Ethan races from New Mexico to the mysterious Haven Island off the Northwest coast where the children had been imprisoned all their lives. But rescuing the other children held captive on Haven Island involves confronting the loss of his son, facing the child's murderer, and reliving the buried pain that caused him to abandon a life with the woman he loves.

Fast-paced and exciting, Blind Run is a quick but suspenseful novel not to be regretted by readers who like works in the vein of Iris Johansen. With and second novel, Out of Reach, already out, and a third to be released in Dec. 05, Patricia Lewin is poised to become a sensation in the world of suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2005-07-26

This was a great read that kept me on the edge of my seat until I was finished. I don't get a lot of time to read so most books take a couple of weeks, Blind Run took me 3 days! I didn't put it down until I was finished!! It was exciting and thrilling, a highly entertaining read! Ethan was a great character, full of problems and pain, the portrayal of the character was so real and believable that I ran right out and bought Pat's second book Out of Reach and I'm highly anticipating her 3rd book due out in December! Read this book, you won't be disappointed!!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing First Novel!.......2005-05-26

Pat Lewin's first suspense novel is suspense at its best. I had read her second (Out of Reach) before reading this one. Both kept me on the edge of my seat, and with my nose stuck in the book for two days until I had read right though, but Blind Run comes out a little ahead for me. The characters draw you in right from the start (women, you will wind up with a big crush on Ethan Decker!) and Lewin's style of writing will keep you guessing through the whole book. To me, a good suspense novel is one that has me tempted to peek ahead to the next page or chapter to find out what's coming, and Blind Run did just that! It is written in a way that is easy to believe, to wonder if something like this could really be going on, without being show-offy and trying to impress the reader with explanations that no average person could understand - a big turn off in suspense novels for me. It is obvious that Lewin did an extensive amount of research on the plot of this book. A wonderful first novel!

    2 out of 5 stars Too Light.......2002-04-09

Some of his other work is much better. This book seams rushed, almost like the author did not want to take the time to really develop either the story or the characters. Because of the light development it does not hold your attention. I just did not believe the characters. I kept waiting for it to get better which is why I toughed it out to the end, but I was disappointed overall.

    3 out of 5 stars Hmmmm.......2001-11-08

This is an ok book. I understand that the "Charlie Muffin" series is quite good. This is the only one that I have read.

The beginning of the book is a little confusing, but once the story gets started it is actually interesting. About 2/3 of the way through, the story begins to slow down and become predicatable.

    The end is predictable.

Overall, this book is ok. Easy to follow. Not too many characters. This is one that you can read in spurts... 10 pages here and there... Leave it and come back to it.....

                4 out of 5 stars Arthurian Tapestry.......2001-04-29

As enchanting as Arthur's court in our own age, MERLIN's BOOKE lures readers of Arthuriana into a timeless myth of literary history--by its title alone. With breathtaking imagination and panoramic scope Jane Yolen delicately draws aside the veil surrounding The Matter of Britain. We may think we are familliar with the legends of the mysterious wizard, but she has skillfully embroidered her own versions of the basic mythos. Who can resist the call of the bejeweled Excalibar, held aloft in shimmering triumph by a dainty hand from beneath the waters of the lake?

Yolen has bequeathed to 20th century civilization this amazing collection of short stories, woven around the provocative and highly-disputed cult of Camelot's sorceror. Readers may expect unique versions of his birth, boyhood, the search for Guineviere, The Sword in the Stone and his sylvan demise. The ensemble is capped by her delightfully cynical scenario of a modern press conference, at which a fervent Arthurian anthropologist and the charming Prince of Wales attempt to convince skeptics of the validity of Merlin's life and death. Let your hearts and imagination run riot: surrender to the spell cast--not only by the wizard himself--but by this talented author, as she swirls the mists of time to reveal a new slant an on old friend.

5 out of 5 stars IS YOUR THROID MAKING YOU FAT?.......2007-02-22

Easy to read and understand and very helpful and informative.
I bought 5 to send to my family and friends.
Also a must read under the same topic is "Living Well With Hyopthyroidism"
by Mary Shomom. The book is full of helpful websites and informtaion on how to find good doctors that practice alternative medicine in every region of the country.

2 out of 5 stars Thyroid Making You Fat book.......2007-02-16

I just got this book out of storage to re-read and I realize it's wasted money. I am already on natural thyroid replacement and with that I have lost a lot of weight but to follow a 1000 calorie a day diet (in one place he says 800 per day) is impossible for me. My doctor wants me getting highly nutritous foods and there is no way on this amount. Plus, how many of us are willing to do this for not 1 week, not 2, but for 4 weeks! AND when I was doing aerobics religiously and following 1000 cal per day, I didn't lose weight but this is what he recommends. Never again.
I gave it 2 stars because it did convince me, a couple of years ago, to find a doctor who uses natural thyroid instead of just synthetics. If the synthetics work for you, hooray but they didn't for me.

                  1 out of 5 stars No help.......2007-01-10

I didn't find this book of any help. I was also already diagnosed but hoped to find a way to lose weight after 15 years of gradual increase in weight due to an underactive thyroid (hashimoto's thyroiditis). I couldn't possibly stick to this diet and decided that it wasn't worth trying anyway, just to find out what I know already. I had hoped it would teach me a way to eat that would help me lose weight, but it does not. It might just be of use to people who haven't yet been diagnosed, but I doubt it, because if the doctor hasn't diagnosed you yet, he is not going to do so on the basis of a book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book To Fill in the Gaps That Your Doc Doesn't.......2007-01-07

After struggling with a low thyroid condition for 9 years, this book gave me information that was very helpful in understanding the reasons that synthetic thyroid hormone was no longer working. This book taught me that my weight is more of a reflection of how my thyroid gland is working more than what I was eating. It also helped me to understand why, that while eating 600-800 healthy calories per day and exercising 1 hour per day...I still wasn't loosing weight. Wish I would have read it a year ago!

In Cooking for Comfort, New York Times food-columnist and cookbook writer, Marion Burros, brings her sure taste and rock-solid technique to revisit simple dishes like linguine with red clam sauce, fried chicken, and quiche Lorraine. Burros knows when a good thing isn't quite good enough, tweaking some recipes (her shortbread features blueberries and lemon curd); upgrading ingredients (a Cobb salad made with arugula); or simply doing a major overall (introducing wine to her cream of tomato soup). As someone concerned about health matters, she's also "streamlined" a number of recipes, like coleslaw and potato salad, which can be made with light mayonnaise without compromise. (She also knows when to leave well enough alone, as with her classic coconut cake recipe.) The 100-plus recipes--all approachable--range from breakfast and brunch dishes to desserts, and includes an extended selection on cookies, cobblers, cakes, puddings, and delicious refrigerator sweets like Apricot Mousse and Terrine of Summer Fruit. With chatty recipe introductions and short-take formulas for the likes of Toasted Cheese Sandwiches and Make Ahead Risotto, the book is a welcome addition to the everything-old-is-new-again canon. --Arthur Boehm

                  Book Description

"We want to go back to a time when life was not so complicated -- or, at least, when we look at it from a distance, it was one that seemed much simpler. One ofthe few ways most of us can get there together is through our food."

                  -- from the Introduction

In these turbulent times, bestselling author and acclaimed New York Times columnist Marian Burros felt the change in America's eating habits. More and more, Burros noticed that people were setting aside their salads and instead reaching for foods like meat loaf and mashed potatoes, while others longed for the cookies, cakes, and pies their moms used to bake. In Cooking for Comfort, Burros shares more than 100 recipes for comfort food. Some are classics, some are streamlined for modern tastes, some have a contemporary twist, and some are unabashedly indulgent. But all are stuff from which taste memories are made.

Known for her ability to create deeply flavorful food and foolproof recipes, Burros shares mouthwatering recipes for dishes like classic Maryland Crab Cakes, Cream of Tomato Soup, the ultimate Toasted Cheese Sandwich, the Perfect BLT, Picnic Fried Chicken, Meat Loaf and Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes, and Great Roast Chicken. They will soothe your mood and satisfy any craving. To calm that sweet tooth, Burros has included more than forty recipes for delectable sweets. Among them are rich and creamy Michael's Chocolate Pudding; no-fail Lemon Meringue Pie; luscious Coconut Cake; and Giant Peanut Butter Cookies with Chocolate Ganache, all of which will feed your soul as well as your stomach.

The recipes are as stress-free and enjoyable to prepare as they are to eat, and they will appeal to any level of home cook. Burros has also provided wine suggestions and special notes on ordering specific ingredients, as well as extensive cook's notes that offer helpful hints and variations on recipes. With Cooking for Comfort, Marian Burros has turned out yet another cookbook that is destined to become a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recipes for Non-Foodies.......2005-04-21

`Cooking for Comfort' is by New York Times food columnist Marian Burros, who is part of a pretty distinguished heritage beginning with Craig Claiborne and Pierre Franey, continuing with Mimi Sheraton and Ruth Reichl and visiting columnist extraordinary R. W. Appel. With Ms. Burros, the likes of Mark Bittman and Amanda Hesser, all writers of notable columns and cookbooks hold the current standard high.

There may be a sense in which the limelight for culinary journalism has passed from the New York Times' printed word to the hotter TV Food Network with its stable of star hosts. In most direct competition to Ms. Burros would probably be `Gourmet's' Sara Moulton, Ina Garten, or the spectacularly prolific Rachael Ray. What is unfortunate is that a cursory look at this book's title gives the impression that it is addressing the same interests as Ms. Ray's '30 Minute Meal' rubric. The fact that Rachael actually wrote a book entitled `Comfort Food' strengthens this association. This is not, however, the case. Ms. Burros has created a very special type of cooking perfectly evident when one pays close attention to the title. Her point is not to give us a book of recipes for comfort food, but a book of recipes that are comforting to make.

It is not too hard to appreciate that a dish that appeals to none of your family will not be too comforting to make. Therefore, almost all of the classic `comfort foods' will also be comfortable to make. That is, a dishes popularity will contribute to the comfort one experiences in the act of making it. A second characteristic of foods which are comforting to make are those which require a fair amount of effort, producing a dish in which one can take great pride in having successfully made this food. It follows from this that these recipes are NOT about quick cooking. A third characteristic I gather from Ms. Burros' selection of recipes is that the dishes are either familiar to American amateur cooks (blueberry pancakes, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, spaghetti with marinara sauce) OR the dishes are interesting selections from world cuisines (Spanish tortilla, Onion soup, Greek Salad, polenta).

In fact, as I look through the list of recipes, I get a strong sense of similarity between this book and two recent `Most Famous Recipe' books, `the greatest dishes!, around the world in 80 recipes' by Anya von Bremzen and `The Cook's Canon, 101 Classic Recipes Everyone Should Know' by Raymond Sokolov. Oddly, I think that while these two books are great for foodies, Ms. Burros' book is specifically written for non-foodies. In this regard, she does share some common ground with the prolific Ms. Ray. Another way in which they differ, however, is that Ms. Burros' directions are much more meticulous, with lots of helpful hints on technique, serving, and wine accompaniments.

I think Ms. Burros' biggest problem, aside from the perceived or actual competition from both Food Network luminaries and New York Times colleagues is that her subject is so ordinary. Why in the world do I want to pay even $20 for a book of 100 recipes, 70% of which can be found among the 4500 recipes in the `Joy of Cooking' or the 2500 recipes in `James Beard's American Cookery'. Any American who cooks probably owns one or the other of these two volumes. In the end, it is probably her one big idea that makes the book interesting. The book is important because it can inspire one to get more enjoyment from your cooking and it gives recipes to help you do that.

Overall, I thing the selection of recipes is excellent, making this a great book for those who endorse that other great non-foodie doctrine of the importance of finding `a few good recipes' and learning them well and doing them well. One problem I believe most amateur food enthusiasts may experience is that they may not appreciate the pleasure in repeating a recipe and doing it well because you have done it before and have gotten all the kinks out of your technique. They are much more interested in tracking down and trying a new Thai recipe using lemon grass or galangal rather than making that same old James Beard London Broil recipe again, regardless of how good it tastes or how easy it is to make.

Ms. Burros' recipe for chili, for example, may not be quite as elaborate as a prize winning recipe reported by Robb Walsh, it is, I believe, a much tastier chili than the Pierre Franey recipe I did for many years before the foodie bug got me and I saw other approaches which used cubed rather than ground meat. Just one example of how well thought out is Ms. Burros' presentation of these recipes can be found in her suggestion to adjust the seasoning of the chili after it has been retrieved from the deep freeze. Another insider's tip is to check the heat in the Jalapenos to see if more or less are needed to suit your taste.

If I were to offer any ideas for Ms. Burros' next book, I would suggest she leave out the food processor and any other high end equipment from her recipe procedures. As I believe her primary audience is the occasional cook, I suspect people in this group may not have $300 food processors. And, if they do have them, they probably don't use them often enough to get the best use out of them. At the very least, I would offer an alternative to the food processor method.

I would also leave off or improve the list of sources in the back of the book. I have to love a list that cites Lou DiPalo and his Manhatten Little Italy store, but DiPalo's is best known for its fresh mozzarella and ricotta, for which Ms. Burros gives a different source. You can get good Parmigiano-Reggiano in any megamart.

Strongly recommended for non-foodie weekend cooks.

5 out of 5 stars #1 cookbook in my collection.......2003-09-26

Cooking for Comfort by Marian Burros is one of the most well thought out, incredibly written cookbooks I have ever read, cooked from or salivated over! Typically the word "Comfort Food" strikes up the notion of large amounts of fat, not in this cookbook. While you can find hints of luxurious fattening recipes scattered throughout her cookbook-- it is for all the right reasons. These recipes conjure up memories of grandma, mom, or maybe your Uncle Bill who would lovingly create homey comfort foods for you as a child. Her trip down memory lane about particular recipes reminded me of my favorites as well. As a native Tennessean I always thought that pimiento cheese spread was a distant cousin of cheese whiz not something you could make in your own kitchen! Burros also gives alternative ingredients for those who want a lower fat recipe, but all of her recipes are the real deal, recipes you have been probably making yourself but in a watered down version that never quite tasted as good as mom's.

Burros' anecdotes and recipe history notes prove that she is a born writer and editor with thorough research and appropriate accreditation with the added style of her own familial stories.
The help notes, step by step instructions and substitution sidebars can turn any kitchen neophyte into a chef! She even shares restaurant secrets (these are the secrets & hints restaurant chefs won't even write in their own cookbooks.)

Having a party and want easy, delicious recipes that have your guests humming or just a good old fashioned dinner that reminds you of Grandma? Cooking for Comfort is your answer.

                  5 out of 5 stars Comforting Food in Two Ways=Eat & Cook.......2003-09-14

These are great traditional recipes that people always yearn for and like. Start at the front with Blueberry Panckakes all the way to the back with Stirred Rice Pudding, and you will find just exceptionally great comfort food without strain of shopping for weird stuff in the supermarket aisles or techniques beyond your patience, skills and equipment.

This has all that covered in addition to clear instructions, aids and source helps if needed.

The selection is sure to deliver many of your favorites and then some from a wide selection of ethnic groupings, course offerings, and tastes. There are some Tex-Mex, Italian, Hungarian, etc.

Personally, those for "Cocktail Sauce for Shrimp; Maryland Crab Cakes; Lobster Roll; Jim Brady's Prize-Winning Goat Gap Chili; Chicken Potpie with Phyllo Crust; Lemon Meringue Pie; Caramel Apple Tart and Pineapple Upside Down Cake" got my comfort attention and appetite to come um up.

This is down to earth cookbook to benefit all who want to cook up some pleasing recipes that will not strain wallet or cooking skills, yet provide bounteous, good food.

Nice to have had some photos, but recipes themselves conjure up great mental feasting.

Would make great gift for new bride or college bound.

5 out of 5 stars What Your Mother Cooked or You Wish She Did.......2003-06-11

Although we have yet to prepare any of the recipes, it was a joy just leafing through the book and seeing the recipes included. It is not a large book and is the first cookbook I read cover to cover as soon as it arrived. Memories of my mother's cooking flashed through my mind. It even includes a recipe for the first thing I remember cooking: Oatmeal cookies (although I did not include raisins). I heard the author on the Diane Rehm show and had to buy this book. It had at least a dozen recipes of dishes I had forgotten about, but tasted wonderful. I have learned that the best recipes are the simple ones. There is nothing fancy about these recipes.
