Book Description
On a summer night in 1963, in the town of Lodi, New Jersey, two policemen were shot to death in the Angel Lounge, a local bar, by two bar patrons. One of the killers was shot by police in New York City two days later; the other, Thomas Trantino, turned himself in and was imprisoned. He remained incarcerated for almost 40 years--the longest-serving prisoner in the New Jersey penal system--until his release early in 2002.
The murder of the policemen in the Angel Lounge remains one of the most notorious crimes in New Jersey history, yet there has never been an in-depth examination of the case--until now. New York Times reporter David Stout takes readers inside the crime: from the close-knit community that was shattered by the killings--and will never forget them--to the courtroom where Thomas Trantino presented evidence that would keep him locked up for decades. Stout introduces us to the victims and to their families, who were determined that Trantino should never go free. And he allows us to hear Trantino explain why he felt he deserved to be paroled, despite the enormity of his crime.
As they trace Trantino's tortuous path from death row to freedom, readers will be forced to confront their own attitudes about crime, punishment, and America's criminal justice system.

A Balanced Perspective.......2007-07-22
This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the controversial case of Thomas Trantino. Trantino was convicted, in February 1964, of the brutal, senseless killings of two, Lodi, New Jersey, police officers the previous summer. Initially condemned to death by electrocution, Trantino's sentence was eventually commuted to life imprisonment, and he bears the dubious distinction of having served more time behind bars than any other prisoner in the Garden State. The author obviously did his homework, read the trial transcripts, and interviewed many close to the case, including relatives of the slain officers. This story is presented in an objective, unbiased way, and Mr. Stout even puts to rest the horrifying (and, thankfully, false) allegations that the officers had been forced to commit sex acts before they were shot. There were at least two minor inaccuracies I picked up on - Trantino's associate, Frank Falco, was a product of Manhattan's Lower East Side, not Brooklyn, and he had two sons by different women, not a daughter - but, for the most part, I found "Night of the Devil" a compelling read which is definitely on the money.
You won't put it down!.......2003-06-08
This book is riveting. Once I started reading it, it was impossible to stop. Mr. Trout really brings the reader into the story. Even though the events happened over 30 years ago, you feel as if you are there. David Stout is a real journalist. He brings the story to life, he is fair and balanced in his reporting. I highly recommend this book if you have any interest in crime, punishment and what's right/wrong with "justice" in America.
My heart goes out to the families of the victims.
The Ultimate Crime.......2003-05-19
Most of us have views about the efficacy of societal imposition of the death penalty for ultimate crimes such as murder or high treason. David Stout's Night of the Devil will will take you on the forty-year journey of a convicted murderer of two police officers, from the crime through the laborings of the state and federal judicial sytems, as they lurch through the particulars of this case and through the general evolution of our society's unsetteled position over the imposition of the ultimate sanction.
Written by a veteran reporter and author of several mystery novels, this story is thoroughly researched, dispassionate, and riveting. The author is from the old school: present the facts so that the reader can gain insight and form their own opinions. Mr. Stout writes in a clear, highly-paced, engaging manner. Few readers are likely to put this book down for long.
The Night of The Devil by David Stout.......2003-03-23
I am the sister of Gary Tedesco, the policeman that was murdered and so for me reading this story was very difficult. With that being said, I believe David Stout wrote this story with a great deal of compassion for all the family members and friends that will be forever changed as a result of this horrific crime. If you want to read a true account of the story that has been in the news for 39 years then I would suggest reading this book. David really did his homework.Everyone who believes hard criminals should be released into society again, should read the results of what allowing these two murderes into society time after time did to two innocent lives and the families and friends their lives touched. The two men who murdered them should never have been out of prison in the first place but one is now walking the streets with us again. The policeman got the death sentence and the families got the life sentence.

Book Description
When Max Freeman's one-time girlfriend, Detective Sherry Richards, asks him to help nail an ex-cop she suspects of killing several young women in South Florida, he agrees. Then he discovers that her suspect once saved his life. Caught between his loyalty to Sherry and his debt to his former brother in blue, Max begins to dig into his fellow officer's shadowy, troubled past-only to come face to face with his own.
Customer Reviews:
Tooooooo slow and BORING.......2006-09-25
I read half this book, waiting for something to happen. It didn't. The book started with an intreguiing premise, but just dragged on, and on, and...I'm sorry, but I do not care to hear about Max's exercise regime, or how many cups of coffee he drinks daily. Can you say padding? There was WAY too much back story. Did anyone bother to tell the author that back story stops the action? As I said, I read half the story and went on to a better book. Don't waste your time.
King does it again........2006-06-27
Former copy Max Freeman has been asked by his former girlfriend, Detective Sherry Richards, to investigate someone Max worked with on the Philadelphia police force. Richards suspects O'Shea in a case of young, female bartenders who are disappearing. While for his friend, attorney Billy Manchester, Max is trying to protect immigrant workers who severely injured working on a cruise ship.
Once again King has provided a page-turning, non-stop read. His character development is subtle but has a way of making me feel invested in his characters and I have learned more about them with each book. I particularly liked Marci, one of the bartenders. Although I missed the Everglades in this book, King knows how to create a sense of place and particularly contrasts; in this case, Miami and Philadelphia. But it's the suspense and accompanying twists, in this book, that stayed with me long after I closed the book.
Decent criminal investigative drama.......2006-03-09
Jonathon King's "A Killing Night" was a well paced novel festooned with a multitude of characters that are transplanted Philadelphians now operating out of South Florida. Not a bad idea considering the weather.
Main character semi-reclusive Max Freeman opted for retirement from the Philadelphia P.D. after being severely wounded while on the job. He splits his time between a remote shack within the swampy Everglades and a beachfront condo owned by his employer and old chum from South Philly, high profile lawyer Billy Manchester. Freeman functions as Manchester's chief investigator. He currently is probing and protecting a group of cruise ship workers who were maimed in a boiler explosion aboard the ship. They are being hassled by thugs trying to force them to go back to the Philippines and drop a negligence case.
Freeman unexpectedly gets contacted by ex girlfriend and now Ft. Lauderdale detective lieutenant Sherry Richards. Richards is flummoxed by a case involving the disappearance of a number of young women, all of whom worked as bartenders. She suspects that another ex Philly P.D. cop, Colin O'Shea, might be involved. O'Shea had left the force under suspicion of wrongdoing. He was implicated in the disappearance of a young attractive young woman Faith Hamlin, who had been doling out consensual sexual favors to men in blue, while working in a 24 hour convenience store. O'Shea's history gave Det. Richards grounds to pursue him and monitor his movements, however Freeman who had worked with him had serious reservations. Freeman agreed to meet with O'Shea to feel him out.
Meanwhile King makes us realize that O'Shea is innocent because we encounter the cunning predator that actually is responsible for the disappearances who coincidently is also a cop. We get a window into his sick mind and how he uses psychology and fear to set up his victims.
As it turns out Freeman and O'Shea wind up partnering up to help solve the rash of crimes and also in the cruise ship problems.
The book while pretty good, concludes with a finale that proves to be wanting, diminishing the overall reading experience. The character development was also a tad on the thin side.
More Better.......2005-09-29
The characters (Freeman, et al) get better and better. The plot has many fine twists and suprises. A great read
As thrilling as the first!.......2005-09-08
I absolutely love the Max Freeman character! Jon King has done a wonderful job in this novel broadening the character and delving into his past. I recommend this book to people who have read the first in the series, you will enjoy it as much as you did the first!

not the best but not the worst.......2000-07-06
It took a while for this tale to get rolling. It was heavily mixed with both a slow story line and intriguing situations. This was a thin story, however it was not a total waste of time. This one belongs in the middle of the pile. Not Green's best. It left me wondering.
now hold on a minute.......2000-02-14
Nobody's expecting a Conan book to be Proust. That's not to say a really, really good Conan book couldn't be written, post-Howard, but this sure isn't it. Still, hold on a minute with the vitriol! Green isn't bad at all - and his characters aren't at all flat... except for Conan himself, who, I admit, eludes Green. Which you might think is a fatal flaw for a Conan book, but no! As 90 minutes of escapist reading, you could do a lot worse than this book
a weakly contrived "movie plot"........1998-05-24
this book was totally disjointed. the concept was sound, but from the beginning the characters were sadly two-dimensional.also it seems like Green couldnt make up his mind. and kept changing their personality to suit his poor story, which would have better fit into a hollywood movie of the ridiculous"batman & robin" vein
Book Description
There's new hope for preventing and treating heart disease. If you suffer from heart disease, Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra has the solution you've been looking for: Maximize the amount of oxygen your heart extracts from your bloodstream by accelerating the rate at which your cells convert nutrients to energy. This can be achieved by following Dr. Sinatra's energy-enhancing nutritional approach. This approach focuses on the supplemental use of three amazing bioenergetic nutrients: Coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, and D-ribose. The synergistic combination of these nutrients essentially charge up every body cell to function at optimal capacity. So, not only will you experience renewed heart health with all that energy, you'll also gain a greater sense of overall well-being.

Great advice!.......2007-09-28
I ordered Dr. Sinatra's other heart book "Heart Sense for Women" for my mother as a Mother's Day gift 5 years ago. The information she gleaned from that book has transformed her. Now both my parents are taking heart health supplements and doing great (they are in their 80's). They showed this latest book to their cardiologist (he is the head cardiologist at Johns Hopkins)who strongly recommended they continue on the supplements as he takes them as well. They look and feel great. I have since started supplementing myself since heart disease is hereditary. I would highly recommend this book to anyone concerned about their heart health. It's an eye opener.
This is a great book !.......2007-06-27
Dr Sinatra has written a great book ! It has lots of information that we can use.
He tells us that blood flow to the heart increases 38 % in people taking CoQ10, also this same people will have a 9 % improvement in the heart functional capacity. Foods rich in CoQ10 are Oily fish with high levels of Omega-3 (salmon ), organ meats and whole grains. (Just in case you decide to go the food way ). He also mentions that the best CoQ10 is made with the Bio-Solv technology and is called Q-Gel. Just Google it.
He says that the "Twin Pillars of Healing" are CoQ10 and L-Carnitine, they both enhance energy at a cellular level.
CoQ10 sparks energy in the cells and L-Carnitine is necessary to bring the fuel into the heart cells to be burned for energy, and the heart needs constant energy to pump properly.
He also talks about other very important nutrients like Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), N-Acetylcysteine (NAC), OPC's (grape seed and Pycnogenol ), etc.
Psssss......Let me tell you a secret.....All of my MD. friends take CoQ10.
Buy this book, it's so good ! has so much detail. Also "Heart Sense for Women" by Dr, Sinatra , is excellent.
Doc Sinatra, not Frank.......2007-05-13
Sinatra's good! Lots of big words, but he's helpful and truthful...
The Sinatra Solution-Metabolic Cardiology.......2007-01-06
Amazing book,Essential for anyone who has CHF or heart disease. My husband
followed the nutritional suppliment regime and his Cardiologist is impressed
with the improvement. We even purchased a copy of Dr Sinatra's book for the Cardiologist.
superb book.......2006-08-22
I read roughly three "health" books per week. It is my hobby. All of the books by Steve Sinatra are excellent, but so far, in my mind, this is the best! Dr. Sinatra writes clearly and succinctly. He is easy to understand. And, after reading a "gillion" health books, I think his answers to some of the problems addressed in the book are light years better than those presented elsewhere. This is a must read!

Customer Reviews:
Very tasty reduced-fat (if not always reduced-calorie) cookies.......2007-02-16
The good: I have made about 15 recipes from this book so far. All ranged from "good" to "excellent", a very respectable turnout. Not a single one was unpleasantly tough, dry, or otherwise failed. They compare VERY favorably with other lowfat cookies I have tried. I will definitely be making some again, and trying others. My personal favorites were apricot almond streusel squares, `gourmet' variation of the chocolate chip cookies, pecan pie squares, crunchy peanut cookies, and cornmeal maple pecan twists.
In general, the recipes in this book are reliable, tasty and have significantly reduced fat (especially saturated fat) as compared with comparable `regular' cookies. E.g., in a typical ~ 2 cup flour recipe, there is usually ~4 T butter here as opposed to 1-2 sticks, and egg yolks are usually reduced or eliminated. The changes do reduce overall dough volume and yield a smaller batch size, which in my opinion is all to the good. (If you're buying a reduced-fat cookie cookbook, chances are you don't want 5 dozen extra cookies lying around every time you head to the kitchen to try a new recipe).
Other pluses: these recipes use familiar, inexpensive and natural ingredients that you already have on hand or can easily find: no weird or artificial diet substitutes. Unlike most low-fat recipes, these cookies are portioned normally and even generously; there is no artificial lowering of the fat content by instructing you to fashion micro-cookies of which you would have to eat 10 to equal one normal cookie. In fact, in several recipes I ended up with more cookies than the listed yield, which almost never happens to me.
This book also seems like a labor of love-- the recipes are unusually well-tested and fine tuned. The instructions are clear, careful and include useful details, like tips on how to reduce the number of dishes you dirty in the preparation. The book belies its small size with lots of helpful or interesting marginal notes and voluminous recipe variations, many of which yield genuinely different recipes (not just something obvious like substitute one variety of raisin for another). You'll find a wonderful diversity of cookie flavors, textures and styles and familar standbys as well as unique recipes of the author's own creation.
The bad: First, I found a few baking times to be off, in particular, too long (my only general `recipe testing' complaint). The author is good about providing other done-ness cues, but I'd recommend you start checking cookies much earlier than indicated.
Second, although these recipes are very good, there were some clear `consequences' of reducing the fat. Several cookies had telltale textural issues such as being soft and cakey instead of tender-chewy, or being hard-crunchy instead of tender-crunchy. Also, almost all became stale frustratingly quickly, in several cases, within a few hours. Some took well to refreshing, freezing, storing unbaked dough to bake off as needed, etc., but I had to figure this out on my own. Given the pervasiveness of the premature staling problem, I would really have appreciated more attention to storage advice and/or strategies - no one wants to end up throwing out most of one's labors away.
Finally, the philosophy of this book is very much of a mid-nineties `reduce fat and who cares about anything else' style, and that philosophy, as most people would now acknowledge, suffered from some major nutritional flaws. Again, the recipes do succeed, and admirably, on satisfying the criteria they set out to satisfy (they are lower fat, and they taste good-- no mean feat). However, if you flip through the nutritional information handily accompanying each recipe, you may notice that many of these cookies are very high in refined carbohydrates and calories. Many of the bars, especially, hover around the mark of 200 calories EACH (and some even more)-- that's a lot. And of course you're not going to eat just one. Morever, many recipe variations are rather decadent (calling for additions of things like nuts, chocolate chips and caramel), with added fat but no added calorie information. I find all this to be off-putting in a book that promises `healthy alternatives that can be eaten without guilt.'
In fact, a number of these recipes seem to have nearly the same total calories as the `standard' version whose fat has not been assiduously reduced. In such cases, you're not so much saving calories as you are exchanging them--by and large, fats for simple carbohydrates. Arguably, this is a trade for the worse, as it increases the "empty calorie" count of your treat and decreases the satiety that fats provide. Then there are the losses that come along with the fat for simple-carb trade--e.g., lower-fat cookies go stale much faster and without the fat, they can taste too sweet. In many cases the new cookies, while still very good, are obviously missing elements of the old standbys. If you slash the amount of chocolate chips in a chocolate chip cookie or the amount of nuts in a Russian tea cake, you can tell that those elements are missing, however appealing the new versions may be on their own terms. This, in combination with a belief that the new cookies are `healthier' (and are going to be stale tomorrow) can lead us to eat an extra cookie or two and thus end up with more calories than if we'd just stuck with the family recipe from the 50's.
I'll now remove my party-pooper hat and reiterate that the author has succeeded in producing a book of wonderful-tasting, diverse and easy cookies with less fat. The book is absolutely in the top tier of the low-fat dessert cookbook family. If you are selective, you can also find many tasty choices that are not JUST reduced fat, but also sport an impressive nutritional profile for dessert. And the book is generally a pleasure to cook and read from. So, I give it 4 stars because it mostly delivers on what it promises. Just don't expect the recipes be nutritional miracles.
A Must Have.......2006-04-13
I bought this recipe book when I really did not have the money to invest in recipe books. Now that I can buy the pricier books I find myself constantly returning to this old favorite. Very very good recipes. Lowfat goodies made with easy variations. I highly recommend it.
Fabulous.......2005-11-07
Ooh I just love this book. Every recipe sounds realy good and there's so little fat that it makes you feel less guilty indulging in the cookies. I've only just purchased the book and have tried one recipe so far the Chocolava cookie and it turned out great. This is a good book to have even if you are just trying to use up egg whites like I was after makng ice cream. A real contradiction I know. But I give this book 2 thumbs up.
My perfect match!.......2005-07-15
My sister and I are health addicts-we are majoring in nutrition. We love to bake and cook healthy. Her cookies are as good as the high fat ones. My favorite so far is the Aaron's melt in your mouth peanut butter cookies. It is like eating rich, fudgy peanut butter. Her fruit bars are good as well. The instructions are written perfectly-I hardly make any adjustments. It comes out just like she says. The book is like my long lost friend that I have discovered. It is a miracle that she came up with these recipes. She must have tested them out and experimented many times. I give Julie 1000 thumbs up. I'll keep making cookies and sweet tasty desserts without feeling the guilt!
Simple, delicious recipes.......2005-04-20
I bake a lot, and this is one of my favourite cookbooks. The recipes are straightforward, there's lots of variety, and every one I've tried has turned out wonderfully (and I have tried probably 30 or 40 of them!)
I always get requests for the recipe when I make things from this book, and people never guess that they're less-fattening versions. I have given a couple of copies of this book as gifts and they've been much appreciated.
This is my go-to cookbook whenever my family is in the mood for cookies or squares. We use it every week.
