5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Book by Mr. Bain.......2006-12-02

I truly enjoyed this book. The train murder mystery was a real cliff hanger. Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Hercule Poirot Eat Your Heart Out.......2005-07-09

There are very few things that have a stronger romantic hold on people than do trains. The "Iron Horse" has captivated people for far longer than any living person can remember and trains are a mainstay of the entertainment industry. Just think about how many songs, movies, TV shows and books feature trains, the list is just too long to remember. There are also numerous clubs for those who take the fascination with trains just a little farther than the rest of us do. It is a railroad excursion held by one of these clubs that provides the setting for this very entertaining book.

Cabot Cove insurance agent Reggie Weems is vice president of one of these clubs and invites Jessica to be his guest on one of the club's excursions in British Columbia. On the first day of the trip, club president Alvin Blevin goes into convulsions and dies very unselfishly setting up a mystery to be solved. Blevin, despite his selfless act that creates our mystery, is very unpopular with most of the club members so the suspect list is very long. At first though, Jessica is the only one who suspects foul play but she, being a mystery writer, has done a lot of research on poisons and immediately recognizes Blevin's symptoms.

To add even more romance to this story, the agency that is charged with investigating the murder is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Mounties. Once RCMP Detective Christian Marshall gets the autopsy report and learns that Jessica was absolutely right about the poison he begins to take her sleuthing seriously and ends up relying on her for many of his clues. As for Jessica, her curiosity is running at full throttle and she ends up in quite a bit of danger before she finds the path that leads to the guilty party.

This is one of the better books in this series, but with trains and Mounties it couldn't possibly fail. The scenery along the train's route is beautifully described and there is even a lady on the train who carries a book about wildflowers so she can point out the different species of flora that the train passes by. The characters, and some of them are indeed characters, are believable and well thought out and this mystery really draws the reader into the story, much more so than in some of the other books in this series. Best of all though, despite numerous red herrings the reader actually has enough information to solve the mystery before Jessica does so. There are some sub-plots that information is withheld on, but the Blevin murder is solvable. Mr. Bain has a tendency to withhold information but he does a splendid job with this book.

If you only read one "Murder She Wrote" mystery, this might well be the one that you should choose.

5 out of 5 stars Murder She Wrote continues it's greatness........2004-04-05

As a member of a train group, this mystery hit close to home. I enjoyed it greatly as I have with all the other Murder She Wrote mysteries. The best thing about the book is the way the author wrote it in Jessica Fletcher's authentic voice. If you've ever watched Murder She Wrote, Jessica has a very distinct way of putting things, and the way she acts. This is all continued in the books.

This was probably one of the better MSW books, as I had a difficult time figuring out who done it. There was a MSW special on TV about 10 years ago with many of the same plot twists and turns about a train murder (only this one was set on an Amtrak train). Pick this up for a good mystery read which may on the surface look like an easy simple mystery, but is much deeper.

5 out of 5 stars All Aboard!.......2003-11-15

This new mystery will have all Murder She Wrote fans up reading until the wee hours of the morning. I enjoyed this book immensely and was sad when the story ended.

The characters in this tale will have everyone guessing on who the perpetrator really is. I was wrong every time, if that says anything.

As Jessica Fletcher gets older, her knack for solving crime is still in tact. There is a scene on the train that Jessica will never forget. It's a life and death situation as she stumbles upon different clues to unravel who is behind the ghastly murder.

As the series chugs forward, the plots get stronger and unforgettable. "Destination Murder" is no exception. Don't let this mystery pass by.

5 out of 5 stars strong series entry.......2003-10-07

Cabot Cove, Maine murder mystery writer Jessica Fletcher agrees to accompany her friend Reggie Weems, a train hobbyist, to the Track and Rail Club's annual meeting in Vancouver. Members of the group are going on a three day journey on the Whistler Northwind train run by B.C. Rails. The chairman of the club is Alvin Blevin, a high-power Vancouver lawyer who is very unpopular with certain members of the group.

On the first day of the train ride, Alvin goes into convulsions and dies. Jessica is certain that he was murdered and she doesn't hesitate to tell RCMP Detective Christain Marshal that she believes he was the victim of strychnine poisoning. When a toxicology report proves her right, the detective asks Jessica to determine which passengers had the best motive for wanting him dead. The problem with that task is that almost everyone had a motive, which makes ferreting out the real killer next to impossible.

Most mystery novels have more than one suspect but in MURDER SHE WROTE: DESTINATION MURDER, the count is more than the fingers on two hands. All the suspects have very credible motives which is why the RCMP detective enlisted the help of the amateur sleuth who has had a successful track record in finding killers on previous cases. Amateur sleuth lovers, especially series fans, will definitely enjoy this exciting who done it.

      Book Description

Homicide My Own resides in that strange and fascinating land between mystery fiction and detective fiction, adjoined with the mystique of philosophy and Native American customs. It's a story of two slog-bottom cops from Spokane, Washington, who are assigned to what appears to be a routine mission: They're to go to an Indian reservation on the Northwest coast and pick up a man who's being held for kidnapping a teenaged girl. Once there, however, one of the cops (given the unusual moniker of "Odd") becomes obsessed with a decades-old murder, the only unsolved murder in the island's history, and he really doesn't want to head back to Spokane until he's found some resolution. His partner, Quinn, the acid-tongued menopausal wife of a decent and boring pharmacist (and the novel's narrator) finds Odd's behavior rather amusing at first, but then finds it to be much more than amusing. In an intriguing character study, Anne Argula has developed a novel that not only forces a reader to keep turning the pages; it goes so far as to force the reader to look at life - and death - in a new and uncharacteristic way. Pick this book up at your own risk. You may find yourself having lost not only the next few hours but also your sense of confidence in, as one might say, "the world as you know it."

5 out of 5 stars More, please, Ms. Argula.......2007-10-09

I read this book last December and liked it enough to pre-order the second book, "Walla Walla Suite," which is just as good. The slightly supernatural twists in both books set them somwhat apart from the run-of-the-mill PI stories. And Quinn, a menopausal cop, is a unique creation, especially in her insights into the male mind and psyche. A woman who understands (although she may not like it) that sometimes men think (NOT!)with the wrong parts of their anatomy. A fascinating character in so many ways. So, yeah, like li'l Oliver once said, "Please, may I have some more?" - Tim Bazzett

5 out of 5 stars Quirky but loveable.......2007-08-22

This little book is very different from the run-of-the-mill mystery (which I also love) The characters are quirky and interesting. There is a bit of "woo-woo" so if you don't like that, don't read this. Give it a try.

      5 out of 5 stars EDGAR nominee.......2006-01-30

Homicide My Own has just been nominated for an Edgar as Best Paperback Original Novel. The Edgar Award is the Oscar for mystery writers. It's presented by the Mystery Writers of America, a prestigious group of writers, reviewers, and publishers. This is a wonderful and well-deserved honor for Anne Argula.

5 out of 5 stars ...and now for something completely different........2006-01-06

Quinn is a grouchy 40+ year-old woman suffering of deadly hot flashes. Odd is a 20+-year old Swede who seems to be the reincarnation of a murder victim. Quinn and Odd are saddled with Charlie, his young girlfriend Stacey and her mother Gail, while trying to solve an old murder. The result is a strange, funny, and highly unusual mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed.

      5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This!.......2005-07-26

One of the best mysteries I've read for a long time, and I read a lot of mysteries. It's genuinely and convincingly offbeat (not "offbeat" for the sake of being "offbeat") and so well-plotted neither my husband or I could lay it down. The characters are real and amusing at the same time. It would make a great movie - some of the scenes are laugh-out-loud but touching at the same time.

Her partner Gerard Alvarez tells Lindsay Frost that Buford Jones was released from prison after a drug bust failed. When the guilty verdict was pronounced Buford threatened Lindsay for she was instrumental in taking him down. When an anxious Lindsay enters her home, she sees noting disturbing so she relaxes. Not long afterward she watches the police looking at her naked body in the bathtub as the cops officially declare suicide, but Gerald and her sister, police officer Kate Frost believe otherwise.

Lindsay soon meets other spirits like herself who have unfinished business to attend to on the mortal plane or have things to learn about their new existence. The only person who can see or hear Lindsay is Kate. Rivals in life, the sisters agree to team up to find Lindsay's killer, but the deceased sibling has bigger issues than uncovering her murderer. Lindsay battles an evil spirit bent on eliminating her entirely while Kate struggles with her superiors who demand she drop the case.

INVISIBLE SHIELD is a superb paranormal police procedural that focuses on two sisters who are so eerily alike in life and were competitors pushing one another to excel while in death they find common ground. Lindsay makes friends and enemies in limbo with some allies saving her after-life when her spirit stalker tries to snuff her light out. There is plenty of action on both sides of the veil between the living and the dead as Scarlett Dean creates a marvelous mystical mystery.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection of Occult Detective Stories.......2006-01-14

If you're a fan of Seabury Quinn and his master criminologist/occult expert Jules de Grandin, you'll appreciate this collection. Lin Carter was quite open that this was intended to be an homage to de Grandin (as well as Howard's Steve Harrison and Rohmer's Neyland Smith), but Carter's stories stand alone very well. The stories by other authors are interesting, but the love for (and knowledge of) this sub-genre shines through in Carter's two offerings.

The reviewer who found no Cthulhu Mythos in these stories was mistaken. Every single story makes reference to things Lovecraftian.

      1 out of 5 stars Where's the Mythos?.......2003-06-18

For fans of Lovecraft? From what I've seen this has nothing to do with the Cthulhu Mythos. No Cthulhu, R'Lyeh, Nyarlathotep. I don't think you should have "psychic gumshoe" in horror stories. It sounds like something from the kid's section. If you want Mythos buy Lovecraft.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Collection!!.......2003-04-05

This is a great collection of stories. Recommended for not only fans of Carter and Lovecraft, But for people who want some good old fun action packed horror/adventure stories. I highly recommend this!!

5 out of 5 stars NEW TWISTS ON OLD FAVORITE.......2003-02-09

Robert Price is a genius editor. Rather than having his eight writers created new stories of the late Lin Carter's hero in the exact same mold as the originator, he let them run loose with the character. The results are 8 marvelous adventures, each giving us
new and different approaches to Anton Zarnak' from action, to horro and even some comedy mixed-in. More anthologies should be this
      fun.

      1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2004-05-09

A serious snooze fest. Of course, if you are a huge Kim Newman fan, you'll be pleased; literally every other story in the book is one. If you must read this book, check it out from the library; at least that way you won't be wasting your money.

      2 out of 5 stars Just so-so.......2001-07-25

This book was something of a let down. The stories were a little dry. I never got that nice chill that I get when I read a good spooky book. Most of the characters in the stories are Sherlock Holmes want-to-be's. But they try to hard, aren't that clever, and most of the spooks come out of the Scooby Doo stories.

Don't spend the money, and if you do, buy it used.

5 out of 5 stars Another winning Stephen Jones anthology.......2001-03-14

Although all the stories collected here involve the same subject, psychic detectives, they are diverse in mood and storytelling. Even if you've read any of these stories before, as I have, it's best to read this collection from cover to cover as a whole. There is also some great stuff here that I'd never heard of before like the Brian Mooney and Jay Russell tales. The whole book is weird fiction, and some of it is quite dark, but Jones places the comic relief at just the right moments. I only wish he would have included one of Seabury Quinn's Jules de Grandin stories; most of which have never been reprinted since their original publication in Weird Tales. Newman's wraparound story alone is worth the price, simply because, like so many great British authors, most of his work hasn't seen U.S. print.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent mystery/horror stories.......2000-07-29

This is a group of mostly newer detective stories. But these aren't your average private eyes; these people del in the supernatural and occult.

Among the authors represented are Clive Barker, William Hope Hodgson, Manly Wade Wellman, Neil Gaiman, Brian Lumley and Basil Copper. In seventh century Ireland, a rural innkeeper and his wife are being terrorized by unnatural noises. A story set in rural England early in the 1900s has a wonderful title, "The Adventure of the Crawling Horror." What looks like a grandfather clock with four hands, and strange symbols where the numbers should be, actually has a much more hellish purpose. Another story has to do with John Wayne supposedly being buried in a pink dress. Kim Newman contributes a multi-part short novel about a fist-sized ruby with the power to destroy mankind.

I am not much of a mystery or supernatural reader, but I really enjoyed these stories. They work as detective stories, and the occult part is sufficiently strange. This is well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional mystery/fantasy crossover anthology........2000-03-04

Dark Detectives stands out in both the mystery and fantasy horror fields as an exceptional collection recommended for any who've enjoyed the writings of psychic sleuths such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or William Hope Hodgson. The genre is mystery/detective but the objects of investigation are all influenced by the supernatural and the many stories by Basil Copper, Clive Barker, Neil Gaiman and others present detectives who must uncover the truth behind these haunting.

O.K., so I'm a sucker for anthologies, but this one is different. The stories range from "Children of Ubasti," by Seabury Queen, first published in 1929, to "The Chronology Protection Case," by Paul Levinson, published just one year ago.By not commissioning stories specifically for this compendium, the editors have shown us the historical development of the supernatural short story in the 20th century, as well as providing an unsurpassed collection of vampires, ghosts, and ghouls that are sure to stir your blood, provided you have not already joined the "Supernatural Sleuths" on the other side.

1 out of 5 stars Haved looked or cared for it yet.......2005-02-11

I got this book and honestly found it a big disappointment. Most of the info in it is in other books and the recipes really arent any big deal. I knew most of the nutrition info already. If you already have a library of FM or nutrition info, this book is pointless.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!!.......2004-10-17

Of all the books i have purchased on fibromyalgia- this is the best. This has become my 'bible' on nutrition for treatment of fibromyalgia. I highly recommend this book!!! It has great information on grains, problems with additives, metals and other toxins, essential vitamins and minerals to take and which ones to avoid and also contains some great recipes!!! With the guiding help of this book, i have been able to do well managing my fibromyalgia and it has helped me feel good enough to start an exercise program.

2 out of 5 stars Loaded with nutritional facts - Lacking application.......2004-10-01

The book has lots to offer if you want a quick reference as to what role vitamins and minerals play in the human body. It also discusses different herbs, flours and sweeteners.

What it is also filled with is typographical errors. Who ever heard of "canal oil" (pg. 70) or "1/3 c. raising" (pg. 90)? The abundance of typos causes one to wonder about the accuracy of other information presented.

It has recipes that call for oddities like buffalo flour, date sugar, kamut spirals, organic chili, applesauce made from Gala apples, MSG-free Spaghetti Sauce and TVP. Even if you can figure out what these are, they can be difficult to locate and expensive. No serving sizes are recommended and calorie values are not given. How is one supposed to track caloric intake?

While this book does supply you with one week's sample menu, it does not explain why the menus are arranged the way they are. For instance, why is there a bedtime snack some days, but not others? On two days the menu includes fish, but the other days have neither meat nor fish. Are five vegetarian days required or is it flexible? Clear-cut directions are not given. I found it disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars The Fibromyalgia Nutrition Guide.......2000-05-02

I found this book to be tremendously helpful. The information on diet, nutrition, and herbs enables us to make sound choices when it comes to the foods we eat. This book made me feel more in charge of my prognosis. There are plenty of delicious-looking recipies for lots of different types of meals. This was a very easy read (even with fibro-fog) and the information was very well presented. There is a heavy emphasis on the author's personal experience which seemed like too much at times, especially since the degree of success of any particular course of treatment varies so much from person to person. However, I believe this book will be helpful to all who suffer from Fibromyalgia because better nutrition gives the body a much better chance at fighting any illness.

This is a wonderful book. I'm writing a historical romance and I used this book for reference on the food and times of France and Europe in 1815. It's marvelous.

4 out of 5 stars Very well done.......2006-03-28

In addition to telling the story of the great chef, this book also provides a lot of insight into the history of food and its evolution, and some of the "dark" side of being a chef during the days of Careme. His health suffered mightily from the fumes from the poorly ventilated kitchens during the time, and the long hours that he worked pushed him into exhaustion, further compromising his health.

I found this full of detailed research and interesting anecdotes. The recipes included were also very insightful, and well chosen. It was also written with a good pace and narrative style. Would highly recommend. I've moved on to "Escoffier: The King of Chefs."

5 out of 5 stars An excellent blend of biography and cookbook.......2005-03-09

For an excellent blend of biography and cookbook, choose Cooking For Kings: The Life Of Antonin Careme, The First Celebrity Chef, a survey of the life of the first known celebrity chef Antonin Careme and his recipes. The cook's own memoirs are used to trace his rise from an abandoned child to becoming one of the greatest cooks in Paris. Careme was more than a chef: he invited chef's tools, he cooked for kings and noblemen, and he even made Napoleon's wedding cake. His marriage of food with glamour made him a notable figure - as well as the first chef to become rich by publishing cookbooks. This is a lively history recommended for food fans.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for up and coming chefs.......2005-02-09

I am currently in school for my bachelors in culinary and this book is a must have for all students i believe i have only started to read it but so far it is great

5 out of 5 stars All you need to know re: great cooking.......2004-08-30

The review before me explains well the contents of this book. I would only add that you learn how Careme pulled together the skills of speciality cooks to create grand meals and, in turn, earned the title of chef. Sadly, the very process or cooking (carbon monoxide and partilate matter in the lungs from charcoal-fuled stoves and ovens) killed him while only in his 40s but he was dedicated to writing about his skills as much as he used them, thus codifying what we know as Haute' cuisine and creating the first modern cookbooks.

Fortunately Kelly's writing style does not bog down in detail and he is quite readable. The parallel social history of the upper classes is enjoyable reading as well.
