Book Description

A dead man dressed like a vicar is propped against a church wall, clutching the address of a dilapidated cottage that's abandoned--except for a human skeleton inside. Inspector Witherspoon's only prayer is to seek the counsel of his housekeeper and secret weapon, Mrs. Jeffries--who proves that a great crimesolver's work is never done.

2 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea.......2006-10-09

In this novel, Mrs. Jeffries and her fellow staff members (servants) track down the murderer of a vicar, found on the street with a hole in his head. On the way they stumble across another corpse, shoved into a chimney. The mystery is adequate, but I had some problems with the book. Mrs. Jeffries and her gang of crime busters remind me a little too much of the Hardy Boys or the Scooby Doo gang. They get excited by the murder, like little kids getting excited about a trip to the zoo (and Wiggins well be upset because he missed the murder, we're told over and over again). There's not a lot of character development here, nor are there very many interesting characters. There is very little in the way of action (unless your idea of action is people sitting in parlors drinking tea). I like historical mysteries, as a rule, when they have a lot of period detail. This book doesn't have much of that. Other than a mention of telegrams, there's not any way to estimate the time that this book is set.

Unfortuantely, the puzzle is not good enough to support a book that otherwise really doesn't go anywhere. However, judging from the other reviews, some people liked it quite a bit, so I am forced to consider the fact that this is primarily a taste thing with me. Not my cuppa.

4 out of 5 stars The Body in the Chimney.......2006-04-14

In the 18th book in the Mrs Jeffries series, the household of Inspector Witherspoon is called upon to surreptitiously help the Inspector solve not one, but two murders. Normally, the staff at Upper Edmonton Gardens has only one murder at a time to focus on. They uncover clues by speaking to other servants, hansom drivers, solicitors, and friends of the victims. But in this case, they scramble all over London trying to piece together a host of clues for two cases.

At first, it appears as though the cases are not connected. A vicar is murdered the night he returns home to London from India. When his pockets are searched, the police uncover a slip of paper with an address written on it. Visiting the address, the police unearth yet another body. Are the two murders related? If so, was the same murderer involved in each case? Once again, Mrs. Jeffries and her staff are only too eager to jump in and help their dear Inspector Witherspoon.

I enjoyed this addition to the Mrs. Jeffries series. As always with the series, the book was a light, quick read. I enjoy the characters just as much as I do the mysteries in the series. It is wonderful to see such a devoted staff, and I like taking the journey back to the 1890s. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a bit of Victorian history, give this series a try.

The first book in the Mrs. Jeffries series is called "The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries". Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Another delightful Mrs. Jeffries mystery!.......2006-03-06

This seires is pure delight, and this book is a fine entry in this long-running series. Mrs. Jeffries and her crew have two murders to solve, and these murders are 10 years apart. It's difficult for them to connect the two, and then to find the correct motive and the right killer. But they do figure it out as usual, and we get to sit and visit with some old friends while we read about it. That's just what the staff at Upper Edmonton Gardens seem to me now - like old friends. If you like great cozy mysteries set in a wonderful setting, you can't go wrong with Mrs. Jeffries.

4 out of 5 stars Inspector Witherspoon's secret assets.......2004-08-26

Behind many a great man there was a woman. Behind kindly - and clueless - Inspector Witherspoon is a household staff which would be a credit to any intelligence agency. But he doesn't know it.

His housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries, a policeman's widow who learned a lot from her late mate's shop talk, marshals the investigative talents of cook Mrs. Goodge, coachman Smythe, housemaid Betsy, young Wiggins the footman - and the eccentric wealthy Lutybelle and her butler - to work the Inspector's cases and adroitly engineer results which reflect credit only on the Inspector. This case begins with the murder of a clergyman and moves on to the discovery of a woman's skeleton in an abandoned cottage. Working behind the scenes on Inspector Witherspoon's murder cases is becoming such good sport that Mrs. Jeffries worries that too many people know how much help the oblivious Inspector is getting from his household staff and friends. If word got out it would damage the Inspector's professional reputation as a crack crime-solving detective.

This is good fun reading. The plot thickens nicely as it goes along: a family factory, two very different sisters, the disposition of controlling interest in the family firm, mysterious assignations in a condemned and vacant house, tensions between half-brothers.

We glimpse young Wiggins' family background as he is summoned to his estranged and very ill grandfather's bedside. However, we learn nothing new about the Inspector's nascent romance with a lovely neighbor lady which began in some of the earlier books in the series.

I do enjoy whiling away a few hours with the latest Mrs. Jeffries novel. This is a strong entry in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Mrs Jeffries does it again.......2004-07-01

Inspector Witherspoon of Scotland Yard is a nice man, but not a particularly good detective. So his devoted housekeeper, Mrs Jeffries, and the rest of his equally devoted staff, help him to solve his crimes without him knowing. The information they gather is passed on to the Inspector via hints and suggestions from Mrs Jeffries, and he ends up thinking he has solved the cases himself. Once you can accept this wildly improbable premise, you can relax and enjoy the series. In this one,a clergyman has been shot dead and the skeleton of a young woman found in a chimney. Can the Inspector's devoted staff solve these crimes? Of course they can! Mrs Goodge the Cook, Betsy the maid, Wiggins the footman, Smythe the coachman, who is secretly engaged to Betsy (why secretly, I've no idea), and of course Mrs Jeffries herself, are all engaging characters, and their delight whenever there is a murder to solve is quite understandable, after all it's a lot more fun than housework. My favourite characters are feisty American widow Luty Belle Cruickshank, and her argumentative butler Hatchett, who help the Inspector's staff to solve their cases. Never mind the improbability of the premise, suspend disbelief and just enjoy the latest episode in this amusing series.

      Book Description

Bhob Stewart's long-awaited Against the Grain: Mad Artist Wallace Wood is the definitive book ever produced on the career of one of science fiction and comics' finest artists. In addition to a remarkable memoir of life at the Wood Studio, former Wood associate Bhob Stewart also provides a biographical portrait, tracing Wood's life from Minnesota to Manhattan while exploring the humorous spirit, dark detours, and psychological twists of a gifted maverick who often went against the grain. From childhood drawings and ambitious teenage samples to an endless parade of pages for a variety of publishers - Avon, EC, Fox, Marvel, Warren, and more - plus illustrations for Galaxy Science Fiction, this is the most stunning display of Wood art ever assembled. Many of the artists and writers who knew Wood personally have also contributed articles and essays, making this book a huge compendium of imaginative art, insights and critical commentary. Bill Pearson, executor of the Wood Estate, has made available rare drawings directly from Wood's own files, while noted art collector Roger Hill, an authority on artists of the EC era, provides a wealth of obscure, previously unpublished Wood drawings and paintings.

5 out of 5 stars When Better Drawings Were Drawed..........2006-03-27

"Against the Grain" is an excellent collection of artwork by the late comic book artist Wally Wood, accompanied with essays by his friends and associates.

If you've never heard of Wood, you are in for a major treat here: Martians, robots, other-world landscapes, elves and dinosaurs have never looked better before or since Wood's time. Wood's crisp handling of pen-and-ink, his superb attention to detail (which fans called "beautiful clutter") and his extraordinary use of shadow and light are here for the reader to behold. The illustrations cover the entire range of his career, including his work from the 1950s with EC comics, his illustrations for Galaxy and other sci-fi magazines and his final masterwork, "The Wizard King".

Whether it was a grotesque monster from an unknown planet or a parody of Superman, a complicated machine from the 24th century or a fighter jet battle, a lush female in a tight-fitting spacesuit or a caricature of a contemporary politician, Wood could draw it. He could have you reeling in terror from space aliens or laughing out loud with "Batboy and Ruben." His influence on future generations of cartoonists was extensive, and some of them pay tribute to him in this book.

He had both friends and fans, some of them aspiring artists who probably would have paid him just to work in his studio. He could play guitar and entertain a group with his conversation, which tripped from art to politics to science.

Thomas Edison once said that invention is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration, and Wally Wood must have understood that perfectly. His creations were the result not just of skill but of hours of labor. This is obvious from the fine details of such pieces as the spaceship interiors of "There'll Be Some Changes Made," his use of high contrast lighting in "Atom Bomb", the precisely-falling raindrops and slanted spears of "Joan of Arc," the exact movements of a medieval duel in "Trial by Arms"...

Phew! It's hard to know where to stop.

As a teenager and amateur cartoonist, I would imagine Wood as living in a Manhattan penthouse (for surely someone that talented would be rich) overlooking the New York skyline, working at his drawing board and surrounded by futuristic machines, while gorgeous women lounged about his bizarre-looking furniture. (He depicts himself in that manner in "My World", a tribute to science-fiction artists.)

Nothing could have been further from the truth. Despite his talent and his fans, Wood became a life-long alcoholic who worked in dank basements, spending weeks at his drawing board, half-wishing he could enter the fantastic environments he was creating and flee all his problems with publishers, bills and imperfect women. It was as if all his emotions had been bottle-necked and could only come out on the drawing board. (One of his three wives was a psychiatrist who concluded that he just had to control everything or else.) In the end, he just walked away from it all, putting himself to sleep with a handgun in 1979.

Still, his fans and associates have assembled this superb collection and hopefully there will be more of them.

5 out of 5 stars The triumph and tragedy of Wallace Wood.......2005-06-22

I came upon this book while browsing a comic shop in Cambridge, and soon realised it was the long promised comprehensive survey of Wood's art and career. I applaud Bhob Stewart for his perseverance and obvious passion in bringing this book to publication. Any fan of Wood's will want to read this book. It contains tons of great art ; some of it obscure and previously unseen, and the biographical information it presents is thorough, and illustrated with great photos. A blurb on the back of the book proclaims, "Hooray for Wally Wood" and sure enough the vivid and imaginitive genius of Wood is on full display between its covers. This is the triumph part of his story, and it makes it a must have art book. But this book bravely explores the person of Wood as well, including the negatives, and the price he paid for his obsessive genius. It's a tragedy that anyone who knows Wood's story is familiar with, and it speaks loudly to the American culture at large, and how we have in the past, sometimes treated our heroes like throwaway commodities. After seeing some of the gorgeous art in the book, it seems incongrous to imagine the same Wood staying up for 3 days on Dexdrine to ink a Wonder Woman comic, but it happened, and frequently. A giant like Wood routinely worked on mediocre jobs just to scrape by. This warts and all approach is as honest as it is heatbreaking, and in my opinion transforms the book into a work of art of another variety, in its portrayal of a gifted but tortured individual. Attention, Hollywood!
Assistants Paul Kirshner, Nick Cuti and others contribute amazing , written tributes to Wood that say just how much they loved the guy, all the while dealing with his difficult personality. For these heartfelt rememberances alone, this book is a welcome, if sobering addition to the legacy of the great Wallace Wood.
I don't know if the author's intent was to produce anything more than a beautiful art book and tribute to his friend, but the fact that this book also functions as a cautionary tale that provides insight into the creative process and inner workings of such an American icon as Wood, is a facinating by product that should be of interest to any general reader.

5 out of 5 stars This is looking the gift horse in the mouth, but..........2004-06-22

Although it had been promised to be a "definitive biography" by the publisher, Against the Grain: Mad Artist Wallace Wood continues the piecemeal format of everything that has been available about Wood and his contemporaries (Severin, Elder, Ingels, Crandall, Williamson, Craig, Davis, et al) for the last 40 years. -Which is to say it's a rambling book of personal essays/reminiscences, panel discussion excerpts and brief, fan-flavored interviews. The books one undeniable saving grace is that it is very generously embellished with samples of the artist's work. But overall, it feels like a blow-out issue of Squa Tront.

This will scratch the itch of the diehard and casual fan who wanted a coffee table browser on the subject. For those, like me, who hoped, finally, to see the subject's life drawn in one cohesive portrait by an insightful Boswell, it's a letdown, or "more of same."

I hope the book does well. It is, perhaps, an urgently needed Wood intro for newer generations who lack a sense of history. It is a welcome public reminder/declaration of Wood's place in The Comic Pantheon, where he clearly stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Roy Crane, Milt Caniff, Walt Kelly, Al Capp, Chester Gould and, dare one utter it, the Great Charles Schulz. Honest, it's not a bad little read. But I wish it had offered something new on the subject, or at least somehow extended the genre of fan appreciation/criticism established by Squa Tront during the 60s and 70s. As it is, this book has an odd way of making me feel that an entire generation, my generation, never really grew up.

      5 out of 5 stars Blazing Colors!.......2004-06-08

This is the penultimate guide on an artist who changed the way comic art is rendered today. This gargantuan exercise on artist Wallace Wood is an absolute for those who grew up with Woods magnificent style as well as the modern aspiring artist. Everything we see in comic art today can be traced in some shape or form to this master of pencil and India ink. The hand which so elegantly wielded the brush has been expertly brought back to life by Bhob Stewart. The text is written with a panache and flair almost completely missing from modern journalism on a subject so sadly underreported these days. Thanks to this wonderfully illustrated labor of love, the art of Wally Wood shall continue to live on for generations to come. All of today's modern heroes would not, could not exist had Wood's artistic creations not covered the span of decades. He was a true 20th-century Renaissance Man. "Against The Grain" is a work to be savored, embraced, shared by all serious artists who desire to know where it all began, and the man who rendered a new direction for a new century, Wally Wood.

      5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Look At Wood's Work.......2004-04-03

I've been reading "Against The Grain" on and off since late
December and, if you're a fan of comics art, this is a must-get for your collection: the late Wallace Wood was one of the comics field's greats, both as an illustrator and a cartoonist.

Like Wood's work, this is a beautiful book, well worth having; editor Bhob Stewart (assisted by Bill Pearson and Roger Hill), has done a great job. There are 35 essays by people who knew the artist, covering every aspect of his varied career. The selection of art does that as well: I have a fairly comprehensive collection of Wood's work, but there's quite a lot here that I was aware of and hadn't been able to obtain, as well of material I never knew about but was glad to see (like his illustrations from "Planet Stories," and his roughs for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"). There's his early work when he was just learning his chops, his roughs, his pencils, his cartoons, his comic book work, his illustrations --all done in variety of different techniques and mediums, all (save for the early material) displaying Wood's beautifully crisp line style.

I am in nursing school and this is the worst book I have ha to read in my college career. It is difficult to read and much of the information is old. One reason it is hard to read is that 75% of the text is referencing to other research work and it disrupts the reading flow. Do not buy this book!

The best part of the book is that it is an educational tool that isn't a worthless wast of money and is something that I can keep with me throughout my nursing carreer.

5 out of 5 stars So many good recipes.......2007-09-20

This cookbook is a great addition to any cook's collection. I have found the Soy Marinated Salmon recipe to be a hit- even with those who say they don't like fish. Whenever I want to try something new, I always pull this book and my Paula Deen book off the shelf. It is a great staple in the simple home cooking category. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Really Great Cookbook!!!.......2005-07-28

I received this cookbook as a wedding gift, and I think it has been the one thing I have used over and over. I have yet to make a recipe from this cookbook that is "average." If you make nothing else, the Applebarn Fresh Apple Cake is worth the price of this book. I need to buy a second volume because the original is wearing out!

            5 out of 5 stars Awesome cookbook!.......2005-03-13

I would describe this cookbook as fun. The recipes span a vast range, as they are collected from different cookbooks from across America. I've created MANY of the recipes over the last few years and have loved all of them. As one reviewer mentioned, most recipes are not for the calorie concious. But then, it doesn't say it is the Light Recipe Hall of Fame, now does it? Most recipes are what I call home-cooking type recipes, with a several A+ restaurant quality recipes (like the Crab Bisque on pg 69). The best part is that most are very easy to make.

5 out of 5 stars I did our daughter's wedding feast from this book!.......2001-02-13

This is the best collection of delectable recipes EVER! I depend on it for everything now. The first recipe I tried was the cheesecake, and my husband looked at me and said: "to die for." The pecan pie is without equal. I prepared the food for 250 guests after our daughter's wedding, and every recipe came from this book. The chocolate raspberry truffle brownies were the biggest hit! The finger foods were wonderful! The thing that cooks will like the best is that they can be assured that every single recipe will turn out great--that they've all been tested and chosen as winners. No more leafing through and trying to decide IF something will be a praisworthy dish; now you KNOW! Love this book!

I have dozens of cookbooks. This one, along with the original Recipe Hall of fame cookbook, is my most-used cookbook!! This one does not collect dust!! Impressive desserts that only LOOK like you took all day to make!! And the ingredients are not something you have to go cross-the-city to an highly expensive gourmet store for!! Most recipes are easy to make, easy to clean-up, and always a hit--not a dud yet!!

I thought the Recipe Hall of Fame Quick & Easy Cookbook : Winning Recipes from Hometown America was so good that I picked up this cookbook, too. There were so many delicious recipes that I had to try several over a weekend. Then I had to walk three miles a day the next week to burn off the extra calories! But it was worth it. Recipes for desserts adaptable to summer or winter menus, casual or formal entertaining, light or rich meal-enders, this cookbook has it all.

            2 out of 5 stars A very odd cookbook.......2001-03-03

I bought this expecting "hometown" style recipes, but some of them are really odd. One of the advertised recipes is "Black Forest Cake", ordinarily one of my favorites - a chocolate cake with cherries and a whipped cream icing. In fact, the name is a translation from the German "Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte" - black forest cherry cake. But the recipe in this book is for 4 meringue disks layered together with a chocolate pudding-like filling and whipped cream. No cherries or cake in sight, and not like any Black Forest cake I've ever seen.

I also expected a fair number of packaged and instant ingredients in a cookbook like this, and there are. But, again, a lot of the recipes are very strange in this. "Raspberry Sherry Trifle" uses store-bought cake, Raspberry Jell-o (??? - never saw that in a trifle before), and frozen raspberries - but goes on to include making home-made vanilla cornstarch pudding. Huh? With all those commercially-prepared ingredients, why waste your time on homemade pudding? Use instant.

At first I thought that I have too much experience with real European desserts and real recipes - but I'm just getting into desserts, so I'm not much beyond the novice stage. I'm certainly no pro, but I know when I see something bizarre, and lots of these recipes are!

Interesting recipes, but don't expect to find a recipe for your favorite [fill in the blank], because it probably won't be what you expect.

            5 out of 5 stars New favorite!.......2006-10-12

This has become my second favorite cookbook in my collection. They have wonderful recipes that are very fast and simple to make. The good thing is that they are things you would want to eat, rather than foods you've never heard of like many cookbooks out there. The most important thing though is that the food has TASTE. I grew up in the South on soul food, so believe me, this stuff is not bland. I highly recommend it and I'm looking forward to trying more of the recipes.

            5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2006-09-23

I consider myself a pretty good cook and am always looking for new recipes for my picky family. So if you're considering this one, get it. I've tried quite a few of these recipes, and all have been winners. A couple needed a little tweaking to suit my personal tastes, but all in all this is a great collection! I will be using this cookbook for many years to come!

            5 out of 5 stars Family Favorites.......2006-04-22

I've been a cookbook collector for years. This cookbook is full of delicious recipes that have become my family's favorites. There are recipes in here that I have had at potlucks and wanted to know how to make the dishes, like Caramel Apple Salad (amazing). My husband loves the Banana Split Dessert. The non-dessert recipes are great, too.
I'm buying a copy of this cookbook to send to my Mom.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Price!.......2004-03-08

I had purchased this a few weeks ago.

I work a lot of hours and I have a 2hour daily commute.

I decided I was tired of blah foods and wanted to do something about it.

So, I purchased some new cookbooks.

This one is one that I have been using the most.

I made a Chili Soup, Easy Brown Rice, Beef Stew, a Baked Rice dish.

At tops my prep time was around 10 minutes.

There is a lot to recommend in this book.

The recipes are easy and the ingredients are things that you would likely have in your cabinets or refrigerator.
They list where each recipe is from.
(As far as the state they got the recipe from)

The editor sometimes list additional things for the recipe.
Like in one recipe where it said Tomato Juice.
They added at the bottom that V8 was just as good.

            Easy to read.
Sometimes you had 2-3 recipes on one page.

In the back of this book they list every cookbook they researched and got recipes from.

I have in addition to this their Best of Best Florida Cookbook.

They also have in the very back of the book before the index a couple of selections.

            One is Equivalent.
Like 1 pound of flour would be 4 1/2 cups.

Then they have another area for measurements.

            They also have Substitutions.
Lke 1 sliced cook bacon=1 tablespoon of bacon bits.

They give you Oven-to-Crockpot Cooking Time Conversions.

            Pan sizes for baking.

Very good information and has made cooking much more enjoyable for me.

So far my partner has said only one thing about something I cooked and it was because *I* made cooked something too long and it was dryer than it should had been.

            4 out of 5 stars A great gift book.......2003-02-10

My mother bought this book for me after I got married, and it is great for busy families. The recipes are simple (and easy to jazz up if you so desire), and the food is straightforward and tasty. My mother-in-law saw so many recipes she liked, she purchased her own copy!

This combination cookbook and cowboy cook lore book is fascinating. You get the recipes of the "coosies" who ran the chuckwagons on the great cattle drives.
THe stories are intriguing. The recipes are interesting. The typeface and color of the typeface is ridiculous. I mean, sepia-colored type.
THe designer is not one who uses cookbooks or reads at night.
By the way, this is dangerous bedtime reading. It just makes you want to eat.
If it ever is reprinted, I hope it is done so one can read it.
