Customer Reviews:
Solid, entertaining - Read series in order.......2007-01-03
WARNING: If you plan on reading other books in the series, do not make the same mistake I did -- read them in order. This one contains "spoilers" for Monkey Wrench.
The characters are entertaining, and help get the reader wrapped in the story quickly. I found myself trying to get a few pages her and there, every chance I got. The spoilers are too bad -- other series writers are more careful not to do that, and looking back, it was not necessary to the plot.
WOW! for P.J Tracy.......2006-10-04
Wow! I thought the first P.J.Tracey book (Monkeewrench) was great, but this was even better. In Live Bait the story revolves around Detectives Magozzi and Rolseth as they investigate a series of murders, with help some from the team at Monkeewrench. The plot is different and the story moves quickly but the dialogue is really something special. The verbal interactions and witty exchanges between the characters really filled out their individual personalities. I feel like I've been reading about them for years!
Can't wait to start the next book!
So nice to revisit the Monkeewrench crew..........2006-08-20
I sort of lost track of the mother-daughter writing team of P. J. Tracy after their debut novel Monkeewrench. That was a great crime novel involving high-tech gaming and computer technology. Something put them back on my radar, and I discovered they had two other novels that I had missed. Making up for lost time, I immediately went out and got Live Bait. Very much a fun read...
The Monkeewrench crew (Roadrunner, Harley, Grace, and Annie) is atoning for the "Monkeewrench murders" in Minneapolis by developing a software package that ties together unrelated leads in criminal investigations. Outfitted in a luxurious motor coach, they are planning on traveling the country to try out the software gratis. While they're heading off to Arizona to solve some cold cases, homicide detectives Magozzi and Rolseth are getting bored with the lack of murders in the city. That dry streak comes to an end when a elderly nursery owner is found murdered in the middle of the night in front of one of his greenhouses. His equally elderly wife destroys the crime scene by moving him inside and "making him presentable" before calling the police. As the detectives conduct the investigation, they learn that everyone feels this guy was a near-saint, and nobody can imagine anyone wanting to murder him. The first clue comes in when another elderly lady dies, and they learn that both were Jewish concentration camp survivors. Another murder with the same framework happens shortly thereafter, and the media pressure starts to become intense. What is it that ties together these murders with another seemingly unrelated killing during the same timeframe?
I was a little disappointed that there wasn't as much techno-flash in this book as there was in the Monkeewrench novel. Still, I loved it. The interplay of dialogue between Magozzi and Rolseth is fresh and entertaining, and both characters have some depth to them. The Monkeewrench crew doesn't figure in as much in this story, but they are there in terms of subplot and character growth. And the thought of this particular band of eccentric computer geeks traveling around the country solving crimes opens a wealth of possibilities for additional installments. Definitely an "author" to read if you haven't yet had the pleasure...
"Live Bait and Switch"?(2 and a half stars).......2006-08-07
Book 2 in the 'Monkeewrench' series is, ultimately, disappointing, especially if you're looking for more of Grace and company. Their brief apperances in the book only serve to clue in the otherwise-lost Maagozzi and Rolseth.
"Live Bait" suffers from a very unoriginal premise, and, once again, too many characters. At times, it feels like it was written as a standalone story, then the authors decided to squeeze in the characters from 'Monkeewrench' to try to strengthen it. Unfortunately, even they can't make this book more memorable. The best parts, once again, are Grace's scenes with Magozzi. There's also a promising hint of things to come in book 3, "Dead Run". With any luck, focusing on Grace and the team, and getting out of Minneapolis for a little while, will give this series the 'reboot' it needs!
Vengeance All Around.......2006-07-27
In this sequel to the excellent "Monkeewrench", authors `PJ Tracy' revisit some of the characters from the first novel. The plot is engrossing, and filled with three-dimensional characters: when beloved ("saint"-like) Morey Gilbert is found dead on the grounds of his garden nursery, detectives Rolseth and Magozzi are called in to unravel why such a seeemingly wonderful man would be shot in the head. Gilbert's family is no help: his wife, Lily, destroyed any forensic evidence when she moved the body, cleaned it, then called the police; his son, Jack, is a personal injury lawyer, an alcoholic, and shunned by his family; and Marty, former policeman and son-in-law, is interupted in his suicide attempt by news of Gilbert's death - he, too, has an alcohol problem due to his wife's murder a year before. If that's not complicated enough, three other senior citizens are found dead, one of whom dies on a railroad track after being severely wounded. If - and how - these deaths are related makes up the majority of the book, and there are several suprises and twists into the victims' past - the Holocaust factors into this - that really keeps you thinking and guessing. Other characters from 'Monkeewrench' make small appearances, and the subplot of Grace MacBride and Magozzi's slow potential romance ties into the big finish. Although not quite as gripping as `Monkeewrench', this book is an excellent follow-up and definitely worthy of being read.

Scientifically Specific & Detailed, the Best Book on Trout!.......1999-07-29
Encyclopedias, dictionaries and other miscellaneous tomes on salmonids have been written to attain the precision and photographic beauty of this one book: "Trout." It's easy to read without sacrificing the scientific.
You have seen pictures of trout and other salmonids before, but never with as much beauty and accuracy as in this book. The subsurface photography captures trout in their natural enviornment--with their jaws agape-- milliseconds before gorging on a small baitfish or hitting a Muddler Minnow. Fisherman will definitely find such photographs worth twice the retail price alone.
The information on each species is concise. Bar graphs detail the average length and weight of each species per year of growth. North American maps detail where each species can be found. For each species, table quality, world record, salmonid's diet, preferred water quality (including temp. and clarity), common hybrids, and more are detailed.
The books are hard bound and make for an attractive library or coffee table in addition to their priceless photographs.
An excellent book on trout.......1999-06-30
This book is excellent. It has everything about trout and how to catch them.

Book Description
The greatest weapon against a serial killer?
A girl with no fear.
There's been a murder.
And it isn't part of some FBI training exercise. Late one night, in the middle of a rainstorm, Gaia and her roommate stumbled upon an actual killing. Since they were the only ones to glimpse the perp, headquarters has granted Gaia and Catherine temporary FBI badges to solve the case. Way to hit the ground running.
But the investigation is not like a TV show. It's gruesome. It's frustrating. It's real.
When the killer strikes again, they realize this isn't a one-shot deal either. Gaia tries to piece together some clues, but there's no real lead to go on. And without a profile, the next victim could be anyone. Anyone at all.
Customer Reviews:
not impressed.......2006-04-17
After being a fan of every other Fearless book from the first series, I was deeply disappointed in the Fearless FBI series. The beginning was okay, and the climax was eventful, but I was hoping for the same raw, violent, witty, smart, and suspensful plot from the original Fearless books. I loved the past books, and I was let down after reading the new books. I expected Gaia's unique character to stay the way she was, intelligent, disdraught, passionate, unexpected, and best of all, fearless. However, the new books portray her as being more mature and composed while she grows up and goes to Stanford and getting a job with the FBI. I miss the old Gaia who lived for the moment and roamed the streets of New York. I wish that the old characters such as Ed, Sam, and Jake were still in the book series and I think it was depressing that they were all cut out of Gaia's life.
Left hanging in suspense.......2006-03-17
I wish this book would have went on a little farther. I am dying to know what happened to Catherine. Gaiga's friends hardly ever die though. I have a lot of faith in this story after reading all the first series of fearless. I love when she was sparring, and when she is in action doing anything above the normal, that's what makes the chacter Gaia so interesting. I hope that Gaia may run into Ed in one of these books, maybe he would want to go into the FBI he always had a saving people thing. I can't wait to read the next book.
Wow.......2005-10-12
As my title states, "Wow". I couldn't put this book down. The plot is intricate. The suspense is incredible. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. I recommend this book to kids over 13 who like realistic/mysteries.
another great book.......2005-10-04
I love the all of the fearless books and this one is no exception.
In this book Gaia and Catherine continue the murder investigation, only it doesn't stop at one murder.
More murders follow and it is their job to find out if it's the work of a serial killer or of a copycat.
Gaia and Catherine also have to concentrate on their FBI training with the other NAT's, so they're very busy.
And Gaia and Will continue to explore their feelings for one another.
This book was once again really great and i can't wait for the next book , too bad we'll have to wait for 5 months.
Fearless FBI - Agent Moore.......2005-09-27
This is the second book in the Fearless FBI series. I suggest reading book one first if you're interested in this book.
This continues on where the first book left off. Gaia Moore is still training to be an FBI agent and things continue to get steamy with Will, one of her partners. Gaia and anothr partner Christina are given temporary agent IDs so they can work on the case, the murder that they caught right after it happened, the end of book one.
I can't wait for book three, Agent Out, to come out.

Use live bait-catch more fish! Everyone who ever started fishing probably baited a hook with a worm. That setup has been the tried-and-true method for generations. There are other kinds of live bait that work just as well; maybe even better in some conditions and for certain fish.

Hundreds of photographs on catching bait AND fish.......1997-09-03
The pictures make this book very practical for inexperienced anglers. For example, the book shows how to make a minnow trap from a coffee can. Even seasoned fishermen will get new information and techniques. I'm a librarian and rarely see photos this plentiful and well done in a book

Book Description
Rising up from the unstoppable Sea of Mist -- a magical void carrying armies of bloodthirsty undead to every land it touches -- a champion fights his way toward destiny.
Trained since infancy in the arts of war, magic, and the secret sects of the rouge, Praz is unwilling to accept a single skill in the magical towers of The Order. Long denied the truth about his unknown past, he seethes with anger, rejecting convention as he leans toward darkness. But the foul slaying of his life-long mentor and the abduction of his only love have drawn Praz out beyond the citadel's walls for the first time in his life to undertake an epic rescue. Traveling through a world distorted by the Sea of Mist and hounded by a mysterious clark lord, Praz slowly begins to unravel his past. Along the way he's joined by warriors from multiple dimensions, battles demonic brothers, and confronts the most terrible foes of all: two lowly servants who've somehow stumbled upon the power of gods.
Customer Reviews:
Could have done better.......2003-06-12
This book leaves you hanging, but not exactly thirsting for more. I would read the sequel, which is non-existant to my knowledge, but only out of frustration.
In a way, there was some kind of more grown-up, Harry Potter-type of quality to this book. Then things end up going all to hell, and people drop like flies, but there's no closure. I expected more of some characters.
What could have been, was not. It's not a bad book, but certainly fails to deliver.
Promising writing, but a weak story.......2002-06-11
As a broadly read fan of the fantasy genre, and having played the majority of the "Might & Magic" games, I picked this up, though I didn't have very high expectations (since books derived from game worlds aren't usually very strongly written).
I was pleasantly surprised to find Odom did a good job with character development. However, the plot was obscure and not very well fleshed out. But the biggest issue I had with the book was that it seemed very short. Short chapters, large typeface, and especially a sudden and inconclusive end to the book. It felt like a deadline was reached or an editor said "ok, that's enough pages, end it there". So, unlike the games, each of which has a conclusive ending, this book didn't really seem to end smoothly.
Good.......2001-12-05
I read the reviews before I started reading this book. Some say they didn't like to see some of the characters die at the end of the book. I would like to point out that this book seems to focus on the life of a man called Praz. So the real question here is the developement of this character, and the death of the other characters didn't bother me at all. In fact it surprised me in a positive way. I have read so many titles where almost all of the heroes and their companions survive at the end. This was like a breeze of fresh air. I read this title in one session and recommend it to everyone. Even to those who have never heard of the world of Might&Magic.
Couldn't put it down........2001-09-22
Being a fan of the Might and Magic gaming genere, I had to buy this book as soon as I saw it at the book store. I brought it to work with me, and by the end of my shift, I had finished the book. (Yeah, Not good to be reading on the job, but I just couldn't help it :)). Since this is the first book of the series, it is hard to judge the plotlines and ideas of the book, since there is quite a bit hanging for a second book. However I found the plotlines and ideas interesting, and different from other fantasy books (eg, Robert Jordan, David Eddings, Terry Brooks, J.R.R. Tolkien), while a lot of racial similarities exist, characters are developed differently, and there are a lot of hidden aspects to characters that get brought forward as the plot lines further themselves. The only complaint I had with this book is the development of some characters that play a minor role, and while reading the book you come to see them in a larger role, only to see them removed. That was a bit confusing. Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the book :)
READS TOO MUCH LIKE A GAME!.......2001-09-20
I usually love Mel Odom's novels but this one - though promising - was just set too much like a game more than a well written novel. There were quite a few interesting characters but the plot was just not there and the background feel was like a game. Now I know its based on a game - but does it have to read like one! Mel Odom writes at his best in the OUTLANDERS novels he writes on occasion, that seems to be his medium and genre and when he is at his best.

If you or someone you love suffers from Migraine Disease - you need this book!.......2007-09-07
This is the book that changed my life! It gives you comprehensive information, guides on how to help yourself in an ER situation, doctors that don't listen, and how to get the best care possible for yourself or your loved one.
Teri writes with such knowledge and compassion. Every single medical term is explained. She speaks from the heart and you can tell this book was a labor of love.
Thank you Teri! You helped me get my life back!!
There's hope; you are not alone!.......2007-09-07
I enjoyed this book far more than I expected. Since the author also experiences migraine attacks, she writes with a great deal of empathy for the sufferer. Reading the stories of the author and others who have experienced attacks at least as frequent or as "bad" as mine reassured me that I am not alone. This book makes two main points: Nearly all migraine patients can be helped, and we should not settle for inadequate medical care. I recommend this book to anyone who experiences migraine attacks, or who cares about someone who does. The book provides both information and encouragement.
A Good Resource For Headache Sufferers.......2007-08-15
I have dealt with migraines for more than 15 years with varying degrees of success. I recently had a resurgence of migraines when I moved to a new part of the country with an extensive new collection of allergens to exacerbate my asthma. In the process of expanding all my sinus cavities, the migraines started up again. I THOUGHT I had figured out all of my triggers and found a way to avoid them and finally dealt with the debilitating pain. I was wrong.
Ms. Robert's book offers extensive information about the nature and causes of Migraine and other headaches. She offers advice and suggestions that have worked for her and many others and cautionary tales as well. While not being a health practitioner herself, she advocates for them as well as their patients.
My only vexation with this book is that while reading it I felt as though I should be jumping onto some band wagon of "Migraineurs" and perhaps should belong to a political action group or some Million Migraineurs March because of a diagnosis. While I understand the need to normalize a disease diagnosis and make idividuals feel like part of a group and supported but perhaps it goes a bit over board for some.
A Wealth of Information, Written by One Who Knows Our Pain.......2007-04-23
Living Well With Migraine Disease and Headaches is a wonderfully comprehensive resource for those who suffer from Migraine and Headache, and for their family and friends. As a Migraineur of 41 years, I thought I had a fairly good grasp of the multiple and sometimes baffling aspects of Migraine. But Teri Roberts' book taught me a great deal more about the medical, personal and social issues surrounding this disease. A Migraineur herself, she has not only fought lengthy battles with Migraine but has also put the experience and wisdom gained from those battles to excellent use by generously providing us with this resource.
Far more than a source of technical information (and it does not short the reader in that regard, either), Living Well With Migraine offers constant encouragement and practical strategies for coping with the oft-uninformed medical community; with the fallout surrounding employment, family and friends that sometimes occurs when a debilitating illness strikes; and most important, with our own emotions of fear, discouragement, and depression.
Above all, Living Well With Migraine offers real hope, and there is no better anodyne than that.
Continuing Education.......2007-01-20
As a migraineur, I was not aware that migraine headaches are so varied and have now been given names. This information has alleviated my stress and described my types of migraines so accurately that I no longer fear I have meningitis or a brain tumor. Also, I have delayed applying for a disability for over a year because my symptoms do not match the designation criteria as per the US Social Security office. I now see however, that it is possible to apply, with medical verification, and obtain monetary relief for my suffering.

You can do a lot of things to improve your health, but none is more important than good nutrition, and none will do much good without it. In the face of massive confusion over conflicting claims about the nutritional value of different foods currently on the market, this book is an invaluable and detailed guide to natural foods that answers a lot of questions for newcomers and old hats, too. It is a perfect companion to your cookbooks, and ought to be required reading for restaurant chefs everywhere. No mere collection of dry nutritional information,
Whole Foods Companion also goes into the origins and naming of different foods and explains some of the legends and traditions with which they have been associated. Dianne Onstad explains in great depth the benefits of eating whole foods. After reading this book, you won't look at commercially canned vegetables without thinking of what you're missing by eating them instead of real food.
Customer Reviews:
I absolutely love this book.......2003-04-18
This is an amazing book that should be in everydody's reference section. It makes it great fun to learn about the foods you are eating with old legends and historical tid-bits. It really motiveates me to continue to eat whole foods and is filled with great information of the nutritional and medicinal uses of each food. My background includes Physics, natural foods culinary school, nutrition and herbalism and I must say that this book never ceases to impress me in the breath and depth of the author's knowledge. If you must buy one book this year, buy this one and learn about why and how our food can keep us healthful. Happy eating.
Really great book!.......2003-01-20
This has it all - vegetables, grains, even herbs. It has lengends/lore, as well as the nutritional facts. I really love this book - very complete, not so dry that you hate picking it up. I find myself just browsing through for no real reason. Great book!
"MUST HAVE!" reference book!.......1998-11-22
No kitchen, personal or professional, should be without this book. One can easily find information. Each subject is dealt with in an easy to read fashion, and quite completely I should add. When you feel that you "want to know", this is the place to go. An excellent investment, and I have found it makes a great gift too!

Amazing resource!.......2006-10-17
This is my food "bible". I find it facinating enough to read like a novel from cover to cover. The layout and organization of the book makes it an invaluable reference book when you want to know about a particular foods nutritional information & health benefits, history or general culinary uses. I love the 'Legends & Lore' sections as well. I refer to this book almost daily and have had fun at dinner parties sharing information about where foods come from. For anyone who is interested in learning more about the food they put into their bodies, this book is incredible. I have both versions, but the revised and expanded edition is the one to buy-more info and more foods.
The Authoritative Guide for Lovers of Natural Foods.......2006-09-05
This is a wonderful book! It is authoritative, detailed, well written, and extremely entertaining.
Author Dianne Onstad writes with an insight and understanding of all aspects of whole foods that is simply mind boggling. "Whole Foods Companion" is intended for those interested in eating well, eating better, or simply knowing the benefits of the many fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts-seeds-oils, and herbs and spices that are available to enrich and prolong their lives.
Each is described in detail, including nutritional value, general information, culinary tips and health benefits. Also listed for many of the whole foods is their lore and legend and buying tips for how to purchase them at their best.
Yes, there is more information in this humorous book than the average person will probably ever use, but that should not detract from its value as the best reference available of its kind.
Great reference.......2006-02-06
If you are confused about the world of whole foods and want more information, the new revised and expanded Whole Foods Companion is a great place to start.
The book is organized like an encyclopedia and lists information for more than 400 different plant foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, oils, herbs, spices, and more.
Each entry in the book includes information about the plant's origin, buying tips, culinary uses, and health benefits. Sidebars scattered throughout the book offer lore, legends, and other fun facts. For example, The Egyptians served lentils liberally to children because it was believed that they enlightened their minds, opened their hearts, and made them cheerful. The Greeks and Romans used asparagus to relieve the pain of toothaches and to prevent bee stings.
Of course, there's more relevant information as well, like "Raw broccoli contains almost as much calcium as whole milk and is linked to lowering the risk of cancer" and "Exceedingly nutritious, it [millet] contains an abundance of minerals and vitamins, and the most complete protein of any of the true cereal grains."
Even if you are not a newcomer to whole foods, this book can be useful as well as interesting. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about whole foods but I still refer to this book often and have learned from it. This is a great reference and would be a helpful addition to the whole foods kitchen.

Excellent Resource.......2005-05-01
"Whole Foods Companion" is a wonderful resource about foods from the earth. The author, Dianne Onstad, brings us more information in this revised and expanded edition based on her 1994 success!
Dianne Onstad is involved in nutrition education, as well as in the promotion of organic whole foods. She even has a special interest in living and raw foods.
In this impressive reference book, you will find information such as: Buying Tips, Culinary Uses, Health Benefits, Lore and Legend, and General Information on Fruits; Vegetables; Grains; Legumes; Nuts, Seeds and Oils; and Herbs, Spices and Other Foods. There is also a glossary and an extremely comprehensive index.
Despite not having any photographs, this book is quite extensive and thorough. I tried to find obscure items within this text, such as loquats, and I actually did find them. I, also, tried to find some misinformation, such as health information, and was unable to do so. Onstad has done an excellent job once again!
In today's world where everything is prepackaged, I find books such as "Whole Foods Companion" to be a welcome and refreshing change to becoming a healthier eater.
For anyone interested in understanding more about their food, how to select it, cook it and what health benefits it provides, then this is a fantastic food reference book of encyclopedic proportions!
